Marc Munden directs from a script by Jack Thorne.
Colin Firth and Julie Walters are set to star in a new version of The Secret Garden from Heyday Films and Studiocanal, who previously collaborated on Paddington.
The script from Jack Thorne is based on Frances Hodgson Burnett’s 1911 classic novel, but moves the story from the Edwardian era to 1947, on the eve of Partition in India, and in the aftermath of WW2 in Britain.
Director Marc Munden is known for his TV work, including National Treasure which won him a best drama Bafta, The Mark Of Cain, The Devil’s Whore and Utopia.

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.
In remembering David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises, one scene immediately comes to mind: Viggo Mortensen fighting two fully clothed men in a bathhouse while completely nude. Cronenberg, never one to shy away from showing the human body,...

The BFI has announced the recipients of its 2016-18 Vision Awards, comprising 22 investments in up-and-coming UK producers.
The awards, generally spread over two years, are designed to enable producers to build and develop their companies, slates and creative relationships.
The BFI had intended to give 20 awards but increased that allocation to 22 in response to the number of strong applications it received. Almost 500 companies applied for the awards, which are backed by a total commitment from the BFI of £2.2m of National Lottery funding.
Fifteen of the awards are to women producers or partnerships, while eight of the companies are based outside of London, located in Belfast, Cardiff, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield and York.

Both as Supernatural's Sam Winchester and in real life, Jared Padalecki hopes to save lives.
The actor, 32, has recently taken part in a campaign for To Write Love on Her Arms, a non-profit organization which aims to help those struggling with depression, addiction and suicidal ideation.
"Always Keep Fighting" is the slogan for his T-shirt campaign which has far exceeded its goal of 1,000 sold thanks to the cause's message and thanks to his passionate fanbase (his face emblazoned on the front of the shirt probably hasn't hurt).
In an exclusive chat with People, Padalecki revealed why the campaign is...

Supernatural's extended family comes under more pressure after Dean Winchester's dalliance with the dark side in its latest episode...
This review contains spoilers.
10.10 The Hunter Games
When we last saw the brothers Winchester, the obtuse angel and the King of Hell, Dean had just gone postal on a room full of people, Sam was rightly perturbed, Castiel was dealing with his host's teenage daughter and Crowley is dealing with Mummy Dearest whilst trying to remain in charge. After the now customary 'The Road So Far', set to Elo's Long Black Road (the music has been really excellent this season), we check back in with everyone dealing with the fallout from Dean's bloodbath. The boys are in agreement; the Mark of Cain needs to go, but unfortunately, the only person they know who can help is Metatron, as I'm sure you remember, the angel responsible for killing Dean.

Supernatural is back from its hiatus with the second half of season 10.When we last saw Dean Winchester, he was surrounded by a massive pile of human bodies he had recently eviscerated. The Mark of Cain is causing problems, so it's finally time to try and get rid of it for good. Unfortunately, all we get is a very cryptic clue, but at least Dean seems to be able to control his homicidal urges thanks to the begging of Castiel's super-annoying daughter.

Well, it's official: The Mark of Cain is turning Dean into what Supernatural would call, well, a dick. In a new promo for the mid-season premiere, first acquired by Variety, Sam finds himself doing everything he can to try to stop Dean from going dark, including letting Metatron out of jail and bringing him back to the bunker. However, Metatron isn't the only one getting in on the fight against the Mark. The promo also gives us a first look at the return of fan-favorite Charlie, though it doesn't seem Dean is too happy to see her. Yes, he did...

I still remember the first time a spoiler truly failed me. It was the season 3 finale of The O.C., and I had read that someone was going to die. Everything I found online pointed to Sandy Cohen having a heart attack. The rumors crushed me to read—but after weeks of preparation, I was ready to try and come to terms with it. But as I sat on my couch, two minutes before the finale was scheduled to end, I realized that Sandy was nowhere to be seen. Instead, the show was focused on a car containing Ryan and Marissa.

Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy was somewhat synonymous for its quotable dialogue (among a number of other things). Most importantly though, it perfectly demonstrated the role of the protagonist and the strife of the hero, a bond that was, for all its darkness, somewhat morbid. However, no one character epitomised this more than Mr. Harvey Dent, the charismatic politician turned bittered villain Two-Face. And yet, before his untimely demise, Mr. Dent ushered one of the most powerful lines of modern film history (well, in this writer's humble opinion at least):
“You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain”.
Of course, in this instance Mr. Dent was addressing the issue of Julius Caesar’s famous betrayal at the hands of his own people, but the quote in itself is poignant enough to extend across almost any discipline or genre; and, while it pains me to say so,...

Break ups are hard – even temporary break ups when you know and all your friends are telling you that you’re going to end up back together. They still suck when you’re going through them. Trust me, I would know. That’s what’s happening on Supernatural! Sam is miffed that Dean lied to him and that this lie leads to terrible things and now he feels responsible for Kevin’s death. And Dean feels guilty because clearly, he is to blame for everything that is wrong with the wrong with the world, and I’m including that whole “The Bachelor” show thingie I keep hearing about.
Sam is being a big baby. And so is Dean, for that matter.
Sorry but it had to be said! How many times have we been down this road where one of them does something the other disapproves of with the best...

I first got to know Tony Pemberton when his production company Go East Productions co-produced my documentary The Mark of Cain. Tony was living in Moscow at the time and I could not have navigated Russia without him. He directed his own Film Beyond The Ocean (2000) in Russia and he knew the ins and outs of filmmaking there. No matter how insane my requests were, he never considered anything impossible. Pemberton is currently in Germany shooting his feature film Buddha’s Little Finger. He is in Berlin, which is standing in for Moscow in the ’90s. Additionally, Pemberton is in …...

This past week I had the pleasure of working again with my long time friends and collaborators Damon Locks and Wayne Montana on a play that I am developing. Damon is a Chicago-based musician who is featured in a documentary currently in development, Parallax Sounds, which “explores the intimate connection between music and urban landscape in Chicago.” Directed by Augusto Contento, the film also features Steve Albini, Ken Vandermark, and Ian Williams, among others.
Locks and Montana created original music for the soundtrack of my own film The Mark of Cain. Their ability to think cinematically and incorporate the sounds of the world around them into their own original creations make them extraordinary collaborators as well as stand alone musicians.
The Eternals, Damon Locks and Wayne Montana’s band, have long incorporated the “noise” of urban life into their music. More about The Eternals.
Here Locks talks about how Chicago...

From an unflinching portrayal of the life of a Victorian prostitute in The Crimson Petal to a comically dreadful wife in the film adaptation of One Day, Romola Garai is set for stardom. But while she is uninhibited in her work, don't try asking about her private life...
Ker-flunk, ker-flunk. Romola Garai thumps across the wooden floor of the photography studio with the grace of a flat-footed Cyberman. She seems unable to control her shoes – a pair of Christian Louboutin platform heels. She looks so elegantly beautiful from the ankle up that her clod-hopping progress is particularly amusing. In the end the photographer comments.
"Yeah," says Garai and stares dispassionately at her feet. "I can't really do shoes."
Garai, it transpires, has very firm ideas about what she does and doesn't do; the way life should be lived, what's important and what she can really do without, thank you very much.

Tony Marchant has signed up to write a new drama about the probation service for BBC One. The Guardian says that Marchant, who previously wrote Holding On and The Mark Of Cain, will pen Public Enemies. The show focuses on the relationship between Eddie, who is released from prison on life licence after serving ten years, and his probation officer Paula, who is returning from suspension. The Brazilian “Wonder Twins” of comic art, Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba, give us their first Vertigo book in the form of Daytripper #1 this week. These guys have worked with top talents in the industry like Joss Whedon (Dark Horse’s Sugar Shock), Matt Fraction (Casanova), and Gerard Way (Umbrella Academy).
Here we have their first solo work in the tradition of Vertigo focusing on the small psychological things of daily life like “how does a down on his luck obituary writer get out of the shadow of his famous father?” Apparently the ending to the first issue is a twist for the fantastic, and not at all expected. I’d expect nothing less from these extremely creative guys. Anytime these guys come out with something new, I can’t snatch it from the stacks fast enough.

In The Spotlight — Emmerdale
This week we bid a fond farewell to Emmerdale’s Paul Lambert (out actor Matthew Bose) and Jonny Foster (Richard Grieve), by taking a look back at their relationship as they exit the series for a new life in Australia – oh, yeah, and to give their troubled marriage a second (or is it third?) chance.
