It was the “Footloose” of times, it was the “Ninja Rap” of times. We’re talking, of course, about the golden age of movie tie-in promotional singles of the ‘80s and ‘90s, a time when a well-placed theme could create the song and the movie of the summer, while a misused one probably involved Mc Hammer. In between were a lot of attempts that nobody remembers, because what was the point of making a movie if you couldn’t coerce a pop star to sell their soul for a lot of money?

Since the publication of "Carrie" in 1974, Stephen King's been a consistent hot topic in horror circles. This slim saga of a girl tormented past the point of ever using her telekinetic powers for good landed like a bang, and from the start savvy readers could spot the influences King grew up with. Stories of dangerous mental abilities, vampires, and self-devouring societies quickly point to a childhood of wonderful pulp sci fi and horror, from cheapie Vincent Price classics to the works of "Twilight Zone" veteran writer, Richard Matheson.
It's an all consuming love for both the joy and goopy scares of the horror genre, but more visceral horror sometimes colors his work, too. The vague memories of a four year old King shape "The Body," as one of his friends was killed by a train, and it's not just his magnum opus, "The Dark Tower" that relived King's personal...

"Orphan," one of my all-time favorite horror movies, is getting a prequel called "Orphan: First Kill." And that prequel has found a home at Paramount. Does this mean it might end up going straight to Paramount+ like the upcoming new "Paranormal Activity" and "Pet Sematary" movies? Or will the orphan subsequently known as Esther head to theaters instead? We'll have to wait and see. "Orphan: First Kill" brings back Isabelle Fuhrman as Leena, a mental patient who poses as a child in order to get close to – and murder – families.
Released in 2009, "Orphan" is a wonderfully trashy horror movie about a family that adopts...

Exclusive: Koreatown Ghost Story, a short film written and directed by Teddy Tenenbaum and Minsun Park, has been sold to Paramount Players with Tenenbaum and Park closing a deal to write and direct the full-length feature film. Neal Moritz and Original’s Toby Jaffe will produce, along with Jim Wedaa. Margaret Cho is attached to reprise her role from the short and will executive produce.
The film is a Supernatural horror tale based on a Korean marriage ritual – a young woman entertains a macabre offer that would let her pursue her dreams, for better or for much, much worse.
Tenenbaum and Park recently sold the pilot The Zone for NBC through ABC Studios and Melissa Rosenberg’s Tall Girl Productions, and they sold their spec horror feature Red Door to Columbia Pictures with Barry Josephson producing.
Wedaa’s credits include Brahms: The Boy II and the soon-to-be-released Netflix film Mixtape.

Exclusive: Following a heated bidding war, Paramount Players has landed the package Significant Other with Maika Monroe and Jack Lacy on board to star. Dan Berk and Robert Olsen will direct and also penned the script. Dan Kagan is producing.
The logline is under wraps, but the project is described as a sci-fi thriller. The film will debut exclusively on Paramount+.
Sources say studio execs were very excited about the script when it was first brought to them and are looking to fast-track it into production.
Lacy most recently starred in HBO’s hit limited series The White Lotus. Created, written and directed by Mike White, the show premiered July 11 and concluded its run with 1.9 million viewers across all platforms tuning in for the finale on August 15. Lacy was also seen in Hulu’s High Fidelity starring Zoe Kravitz as well as Mrs. America, Fosse/Verdon and I’m Dying Up Here.

The as yet untitled Pet Sematary prequel in production at Paramount has added double hand amputee John W Lawson to the cast in a role that was altered after the actor was cast. The disability-inclusion activist auditioned for the role of "Stanny" in the movie, and although the character was originally not written without hands, the part was rewritten around the actor. The casting has also led to some further details about the movie being revealed by director Lindsey Beer, as even though the movie is already well progressed there has been little revealed about what can be expected from the story, which is expected to flesh out the story of a young Jud Crandall and his first experiences of the Pet Sematary's horrors.
Speaking to Variety, Lawson said, "I have myoelectric hands... or what people commonly call 'cyborg,' But most of the time, it's just my hooks.

Actor, disability-inclusion advocate and double hand amputee John W. Lawson has been cast as Stanny in Paramount Players’ untitled “Pet Sematary” prequel, written and directed by Lindsey Beer.
“I have myoelectric hands… or what people commonly call ‘cyborg,’” Lawson jokes. “But most of the time, it’s just my hooks.”
This news makes the “Pet Sematary” prequel one of the first major horror fiction films to cast a double amputee in a starring role. Production on the movie, produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian, began in August.
While many plot details remain under wraps, Paramount did share that in the script, Stanny was not originally without hands — after Lawson auditioned, the role was rewritten to suit him.

The ever-growing roster of Stephen King adaptations is expanding with “Chapelwaite,” Epix’s upcoming series adaptation of the horror author’s “Jerusalem’s Lot.” Epix released the trailer for the series, which stars Oscar winner Adrien Brody and “Schitt’s Creek” favorite Emily Hampshire. The horror series is set to premiere on August 22.
Per Epix, the series is set in the 1850s and follows Captain Charles Boone (Brody), who relocates his family of three children to his ancestral home in the small, seemingly sleepy town of Preacher’s Corners, Maine after his wife dies at sea. However, Charles will soon have to confront the secrets of his family’s sordid history and fight to end the darkness that has plagued the Boones for generations.
Hampshire plays Rebecca Morgan, an ambitious young woman who left Preacher’s Corners to attend Mount Holyoke College and has returned home with an advance to write a story for Atlantic Magazine.

Indie moviemaker Amy Seimetz pulls off the ultimate heist in “No Sudden Move.”
Though relatively unknown to most viewers, Seimetz slyly steals the star-studded film out from under the likes of Don Cheadle and Benicio del Toro with her portrayal of a housewife who gets caught up in a dangerous plot to steal a priceless document.
The Steven Soderbergh film is now streaming on HBO Max, and Seimetz is nothing short of a revelation. Her character, Mary Wertz, is kidnapped by a group of small-time crooks who want to force her philandering, auto executive husband (David Harbour) to break into his office safe in order to give them some trade secrets. Just as she finds herself and her children staring down the barrel of a gun, Mary also discovers that her marriage is a sham when one of the robbers casually notes that her husband is sleeping with his boss’ secretary.

Jackson White is reportedly in final negotiations to play a younger Jud Crandall in the Pet Sematary prequel in the works at Paramount Players. A follow-up to the 2019 remake by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer, the new movie will be directed by Lindsey Beer, who wrote the latest script based on a draft by Jeff Buhler. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producing.
There are no plot details on the new Pet Sematary movie at this time, though it will apparently be set decades before the events of the 2019 movie. In the reboot, John Lithgow co-starred as Jud Crandall, the elderly neighbor of the Creed family who tells the patriarch Louis (Jason Clarke) about the haunted burial ground that brings the dead back to life. This results in disastrous consequences for everyone after the grieving father buries his deceased child in the area.

Alongside some of the biggest streaming apps available now, Paramount+ has entered the highly competitive market and is looking to make its mark. Originally launched as CBS All Access in 2014, the ViacomCBS owned service was rebranded as Paramount+ on March 4, 2021, following the 2019 re-merger of CBS and Viacom. With 36 million subscribers currently, Paramount Plus is looking to expand even more. They will be adding over one thousand new movie titles this week alone.
And the move seems very necessary. HBO Max recently merged with Discovery+. Disney, Netflix, and Prime Video are available globally with millions of subscribers. Paramount+ will start streaming Paramount Pictures' theatrical releases after a 45-day window in movie theaters. So, you can expect to stream A Quiet Place Part 2 from July. Paramount's sci-fi thriller Infinite, starring Mark Wahlberg and Chiwetel Ejiofor will be exclusively streaming on the platform from June 10.

Warner Bros announced that they will be sinking their teeth into a remake of The Hunger, an 80's erotic vampire cult classic starring the late singer, David Bowie. The original erotic tale of the undead, which was directed by Tony Scott, co-starred Susan Sarandon and Catherine Deneuve, was released in 1983 and became an instant cult classic due to its lavish, stylized appearance in a time when Gothic fashion and lifestyles were just starting to come to the fore. The movie was based on a Whitley Strieber novel of the same name, although it was a very loose adaptation.

Following very mixed reactions to the recent reboot, a fourth Pet Sematary movie is in the works. Back in 1989, the first Pet Sematary movie was released, and to this day, it remains one of the most popular Stephen King adaptations. The remake drew in a lot of mixed reviews when it was released in 2019, though it did perform well at the box office with a gross of more than $113 million.
Now, Paramount Players is venturing back down that road with the next installment of the franchise quickly gaining momentum. Per Deadline, Lindsey Beer has signed on to direct the new movie, which is said to be a follow-up to the 2019 reboot. After Mary Lambert directed the original Pet Sematary and its 1992 sequel, the studio reportedly wanted to go back to the movie's roots with a female filmmaker directing. In addition to directing, Beer wrote the latest script based on a previous draft by Jeff Buhler.

Get ready, Stephen King fans. Over the past few years, the influx in content being produced solely for streaming services has made it easier for authors and creators alike to see their work come to life - and no author has ever been as prolific in seeing their work adapted for the screen as the King of Horror himself.
Since King published his first novel Carrie in 1974, there have been close to 100 feature film and television adaptations of his many novels, short stories, and novellas - and if the success of recent films and series' such as It, It: Chapter Two, Pet Sematary, Castle Rock, and The Outsider has taught us anything - it's that there is a definite demand for them.

As film adaptations of Stephen King novels continue to be all the rage nowadays, the demand for more and more of Mr. King's properties is ever constant. With successes like that of It, Pet Sematary and Doctor Sleep, it was only natural that we would see the return of Firestarter, a film formerly led by Drew Barrymore in 1984.
The plot of the Firestarter novel revolves around a family on the run from government forces as they use telekinetic and pyrokinetic abilities to escape from the ever present danger that surrounds them. The plot of the 1984 follows the same beats as the book, through which a much more simplified layout of the story. The film holds a 37% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based off 27 reviews.

Zombie movies are a dime a dozen these days, which makes sense because gory and gruesome storylines never seem to get old. Regardless of how much we’ve grown to love watching our favorite movies on streaming platforms, there’s no shame in adding a few new Blu-Rays to your collection, and with summer and spring pushing more people outside, the films below are great for a spooky movie night under the stars. Even though Halloween is usually sanctioned for zombie and other horror movies, you can obviously watch these movies all year long.

U.S. actors Maika Monroe (“It Follows”), Karl Glusman (“Nocturnal Animals”) and Burn Gorman (“Enola Holmes”) are attached to star in psychological thriller “Watcher,” directed by Chloe Okuno, which starts shooting this month.
The previously announced film marks the feature film debut of Okuno, director of the award-winning AFI short film “Slut,” centered on a naive young girl who becomes the target of a murderous sociopath when she attempts to reinvent herself to impress the boys in her small Texas town.
“Watcher,” according to promotional materials, follows young married couple Julia (Monroe) and Francis (Glusman) as they move into a new apartment together in Bucharest, just as a citywide panic is brewing over a possible serial killer on the loose. Julia, who finds herself isolated in her new surroundings, becomes increasingly tormented by the belief that she is being stalked by an unseen watcher in the adjacent building.

Although it may be difficult to believe, it's already been over three years since the passing of George A. Romero. While he left us with a legacy of films that are just as relevant (and sometimes more so) as when they were first released, there are a plethora of intriguing projects that he worked on that didn't see the light of the silver screen.
Thankfully, many of these unmade projects have been preserved by University of Pittsburgh Libraries through their George A. Romero Archival Collection, which will be unveiled in a free virtual event on Tuesday, February 9th at 7:00pm Est.

Zac Efron will star in “Firestarter,” a new adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel.
The film centers on a young girl who develops pyrokinetic powers and the ability to see the future. She is abducted by a mysterious government agency that plans to weaponize her superhuman skills. The film is backed by Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions and Weed Road Productions.
Efron, who first came to fame in the rosy “High School Musical” franchise, has shown his darker side in certain projects, playing Ted Bundy in “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.” This feels in that vein. Efron’s other credits include “Neighbors,” “The Greatest Showman” and “The Paperboy.” He will next be seen in a remake of “Three Men and a Baby,” which feels very far removed from all things Ted Bundy and Stephen King.

Netflix will have another Christmas rom-com on deck during the holidays.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Brooke Shields and Cary Elwes will be spreading some holiday cheer from Scotland.
The duo will lead A Castle for Christmas, which follows an American author, Sophie (Shields), who makes her way to Scotland, and immediately falls in love with a castle.
Yes, really.
Unfortunately, the owner, a Scottish Duke named Myles (Elwes), does not want to sell to a foreigner.
The duo butt heads as they try to come to some sort of resolution, but they "just may find more than they bargained for."
The outlet reports Mary Lambert, who brought Pet Sematary and The In Crowd to viewers, will direct the holiday flick.
More exciting is that the movie will be filmed on location in Scotland. As a Scotsman myself, I'm excited to see which locations are used, and how the country is portrayed.

Very few people have found their work adapted for both the big and small screen as regularly as prolific author Stephen King, who has proven to be a goldmine for Hollywood ever since horror classic Carrie was first released all the way back in 1976.
Since then, the Stephen King well has been revisited countless times with 52 movies and 30 TV shows materializing, covering everything from box office smash hits to colossal failures, spawning cult favorites and all-time greats in a variety of genres that include such diverse output as The Running Man and The Shining to The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption.
The latest boom period is still ongoing, with The Stand set to debut on CBS in December and a further eight shows in various stages of development, not to mention eleven feature-length films. The royalties alone that King is raking in must be seriously impressive, and that number...

CBS All Access‘ limited series adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Stand” will premiere Dec. 17, the streamer announced Tuesday.
The series will be a weekly one, with each of the subsequent eight episodes streaming one at a time every Thursday following that premiere. As previously announced, King penned the finale and also wrote a new coda that will take the story beyond where is 800-plus page 1978 tome left things.
“During the two years we spent making ‘The Stand,’ we all felt the responsibility of adapting what may be the most beloved work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, but none of us could have imagined that Stephen King’s 40-year-old masterpiece about a global pandemic would come to be so eerily relevant,” said showrunner Benjamin Cavell. “We’re honored to tell this sprawling, epic story, including a new coda that Stephen King has wanted to add for decades.

With what was supposed to be the summer movie season now just another relic of this pandemic-blasted year, and the rest of 2020’s major film releases in a continuing state of flux, it’s important to note that there has still been a fairly steady stream of new films coming out, some in limited theatrical release but others largely available via video on demand and streaming services.
With that in mind, and with the customary “opening weekend” a rather fluid and ambiguous term as well, below is a rundown of films we’ve caught in the past month, along with information on where you can find and watch them. Some are good, some not so much, but your mileage may vary for each. The important thing to know is that movies are still coming out–just not always in the ways we expect.

Bleecker Street has released a new trailer for The Secrets We Keep. The Post-World War II thriller features a cast led by Noomi Rapace and Joel Kimmaman. It promises to be a dark, emotional drama. Even though this is dealing with elements of the war, as we can see from the trailer, this is far from your average war movie.
The trailer quickly lives up to the promise of the title, with Noomi Rapace revealing a big secret to her husband. We then get a sense of some of the horrors her character, along with her family, endured during the war. It then becomes a twist-filled tale of revenge, with a supposed former German soldier being held accountable for his alleged misdoings. Assuming he is indeed the guy he's suspected of being, which is up for debate. It's a tangled web that provides a seemingly unique take on the WWII sub-genre.

The Hellraiser franchise's evolution is filled with many hits and misses. 2018's Hellraiser: Judgment by filmmaker and longtime Hellraiser makeup artist Gary J. Netflix movie The Devil All the Time has released its first trailer, showcasing an impressive ensemble within a bleak piece of dramatic Gothic Americana. Indeed, the film is headlined by Marvel’s current big screen Spider-Man, Tom Holland, opposite DC’s imminently-debuting big screen Batman, Robert Pattinson, setting up a collision course of characters so seemingly epic, it might just make you forget to wish they were in their respective crimefighting outfits.

Goose, “Captain Marvel” (2019)
Okay, Goose is technically not a cat. Carol Danvers’ orange sidekick is actually a flerken (an alien with massive tentacles hidden inside her mouth), but Goose’s fluffy coat and knack for getting into trouble puts her firmly in the cat category.
Binx, “Hocus Pocus” (1993)
Thackery Binx was just a normal teenage boy in 1693 before he was cursed to live forever in the body of a black cat. But hey, everyone goes through weird phases in their teens.
Cat, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (1961)
Let’s make this clear: Holly Golightly does not own this cat. He belongs to nobody and nobody belongs to him. But that doesn’t stop him from playing a pivotal role in the movie, including the tear-jerking final scene.
Jonesy, “Alien” (1979)
This orange tabby was the unofficial mascot of the Uscss Nostromo and one of the few crew members to survive a Xenomorph attack.
Okay, Goose is technically not a cat. Carol Danvers’ orange sidekick is actually a flerken (an alien with massive tentacles hidden inside her mouth), but Goose’s fluffy coat and knack for getting into trouble puts her firmly in the cat category.

When the discussion of "scariest movies ever" comes up, we typically hear or read the same go-tos and staple titles like The Exorcist, The Shining, Jaws, and The Thing. One film that gets mentioned, but probably not enough is 1989's Pet Sematary, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. If it isn't "the scariest movie ever," it does at least contain some of the most frightening scenes in film history. Upon looking back at the fright fest that is Pet Sematary, you'll be reminded of just how haunting certain moments are (that is if you haven't been able to shake them.) Perhaps more attention-grabbing than the scares, though, is the very basic fact that Pet Sematary is a pretty bad movie overall. It's a memorably chilling tale, and renowned classic of the genre. It's also an atrociously acted, almost laughable mess that amazingly still manages to be terrifying as hell.
