Native American actors have been getting their much-deserved dues in recent years in Hollywood, with younger and older Indigenous actors benefiting from more opportunities. Native Americans, Indigenous peoples, and First Nations peoples are all names for the peoples who can trace their origins to the original tribes, confederations, and communities that called America home long before any Europeans came ashore. Persecuted from the outset, even modern Hollywood is not free from the sin of disrespecting and disenfranchising Native American actors. There’s a long, sad history of Hollywood whitewashing Indigenous roles, that is when they’re even included at all.
But the story has been changing in the 21st century. Native American movies and TV shows are telling real stories of Indigenous peoples, made by and starring those closest to them. With shows like Reservation Dogs and Dark Winds, and movies like Rez Ball proving popular with critics and audiences alike,...

The Western genre has been a beacon of great stories, powerful writing, and legendary talent since the earliest days of Hollywood, thanks to the work of John Ford, Sergio Leone, and John Wayne. While most Westerns follow the idea of lone gunslingers, small-town violence, and epic journeys, the genre also has a strong overlap with the war genre, thanks to conflicts like the Civil War.
Western movies cover a broad period of American history, with Westward expansion being the norm between the nation's founding and the turn of the century. Key conflicts, such as the American-Indian Wars and the Civil War, implicated the West, with the latter conflict stretching as far as Texas, New Mexico, and Idaho. America's push to the frontier was rife with conflict, making the Old West one of the most dangerous places in the nation's history.

The Western genre has produced some of the greatest movies of all time, thanks to the work of Hollywood legends like John Ford, Howard Hawks, Kurt Russell, and John Wayne. With some of the best-written stories in the film industry, the genre is known for its combination of compelling character studies, explorations of the American landscape, and brilliant gunfights.
While some Western movies stay confined to a small town and a handful of characters, others explore journeys across the vast American frontier and focus on a variety of characters. While the more subdued movies in the genre, like High Noon, often get the best critical acclaim, many viewers show up to enjoy the epic side of the Old West. From perilous journeys to years-long tales of revenge, these movies have helped usher in the modern era of compelling and epic Westerns.

Representation-wise, 2024 is already a pretty big year for the Emmys. The morning of July 17 marked the second time in the award show's history that an Indigenous performer has been nominated for an acting prize. Actually, scratch that: simultaneously, three performers became the second Indigenous acting nominees in the award's history. Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis became the very first Indigenous actresses to receive a nod from the Television Academy, for Under the Bridge and True Detective: Night Country, respectively. Both are in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category. Meanwhile, Reservation Dogs' D'Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, becoming the de facto second male Indigenous performer to run for an Emmy ever since August Schellenberg's 2007 nod for the HBO film Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.

The nominations for the 76th annual Emmys have dropped. There were some records broken, a lot of surprises including 36 first-time nominees and some major snubs. And a lot of fun facts and trivia about this year’s nominees. FX’s period drama series “Shogun” earning 25 Emmy nominations this year, the most of any dramatic series this year. The original NBC miniseries adaptation of the James Clavell best-seller which starred Richard Chamberlain and the legendary Toshiro Mifune received 14 nominations and won for limited series, costume design, graphic design and title sequences. Hulu’s “The Bear” broke the record for most nominations for a comedy series earning 23 nominations. NBC’s “30 Rock” had held the record with 22 nominations since 2009. Native Americans finally have some representation in this year’s nomination with Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis earning outstanding supporting actress nominations for Hulu’s “Under the Bridge” and HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country.

Under the Bridge, the limited true crime drama series starring Lily Gladstone, has earned the actress a historic feat at the 2024 Emmy Awards. With a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, Movie or Anthology, Gladstone has become one of two Indigenous women ever to be nominated in an acting category at the prestigious awards show.

The Emmy Award nominations on Wednesday morning made history across various categories including Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series which recognized Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis for their work in Hulu’s Under The Bridge and Max’s True Detective: Night Country, respectively.
The nods—both Gladstone and Reis’ first— make the pair the first Indigenous women to receive Emmy acting nominations.
Until today, August Schellenberg was the only Native American actor to be nominated for an acting Emmy. He was recognized for his portrayal of Sitting Bull in HBO’s Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee in 2007 under the “Outstanding Actor in a Miniseries or Move” category.
Additionally, FX’s Reservation Dogs finally earned some Emmy love for its final season including Best Comedy Series and Lead Actor in a Comedy for D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai.

Indigenous actresses Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis have made history with their first Primetime Emmy nominations.
On Wednesday, Gladstone and Reis received nominations in the supporting actress in a limited series category for their roles in Hulu’s “Under the Bridge” and HBO/Max’s “True Detective: Night Country.” This major recognition marks the first time Indigenous women have been nominated for acting Emmys, and they are only the second and third Indigenous actors ever to be recognized in the 76-year history of the television awards.

Casting director Ellen Lewis and head of Indigenous casting Rene Haynes came to Killers of the Flower Moon from very different backgrounds. The former had worked with Martin Scorsese for many years, beginning with Goodfellas. The latter had been at the forefront of casting Indigenous actors in everything from the Twilight series to the HBO film Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, which earned her an Emmy nom. When Killers came around, says Lewis, “I contacted Rene immediately because I had met her on [the Netflix series] Godless and knew that I was going to want her with me on this journey.”
Haynes was first hired to cast extras for War Party (1988). Production brought her to the Seven Reservations of Montana, where she says she “developed this strong attachment to [the Indigenous] community.” Soon thereafter was Dances With Wolves (1990), which she says “heralded a realization that Native characters should be played by Native actors.

“I get to use so many different techniques and learn so many more techniques from other people,” describes Chris Glimsdale of her work on “The Last of Us.” The hair department head put her creativity into overdrive on the HBO drama, creating lace pieces for “infected” creatures and collaborating closely with the makeup and prosthetic departments. But it was her work chronicling an unlikely romance during the episode “Long, Long Time” that earned Glimsdale an Emmy nomination for Contemporary Hairstyling. The artist had a “wonderful” time exploring how a couple aged together in the aftermath of an apocalypse. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The first step in the process was presenting Nick Offerman to audiences in a way they had never seen him before. The actor arrived on set with a “very clean cut, very modern” look that didn’t fit with his survivalist character Bill, according to Glimsdale.

The McLusky brothers’ mother, Miriam, teaches history to incarcerated women in Mayor of Kingstown, and her lessons are fascinating — but is the Mayor of Kingstown true story, especially the Trail of Tears dogs left behind, accurate? Mayor of Kingstown continues co-creator Taylor Sheridan’s pattern of complex themes, delving into the shortcomings of America’s prison system along with Miriam’s lessons, which offer an elegant, yet devastating, look into systemic racism. Mayor of Kingstown is set in a town with seven prisons within a 10-mile radius where the McLusky brothers make it their business to blur the line between the criminals and law enforcement.
The family matriarch, Miriam, however, seems displeased with the McLusky brothers’ roles in Kingstown. Miriam contrasts her son’s roles in Mayor of Kingstown and is a particularly poignant character on the show because she believes not in facilitating the broken system as they do,...

In 2019, the Best TV Movie and Best Limited Series PGA Awards categories were introduced as replacements for a consolidated one that had existed since 1995. Prior to the split, the organization honored 12 telefilms, almost all of which are based on true stories. Of the few proper biopics in that group, only 2013’s “Behind the Candelabra” – which stars Michael Douglas as Liberace – focuses on the life of a musician. Now, after nearly a decade, the HBO movie is expected to gain some company in that distinction since The Roku Channel’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” is the odds-on favorite to take this year’s made-for-tv movie prize.
Naturally, “Weird” differs significantly from a typical biopic in that it parodies the genre’s traditional formula at every turn. Al Yankovic, who co-wrote the script with director Eric Appel, gets across the main beats of the story of his career beginnings while taking increasingly outlandish liberties,...

“Black Mirror’s” loss could be HBO’s gain. After three straight Best TV Movie Emmy victories for various episodes and not meeting the new 75-minute runtime requirement, “Black Mirror” is forced to compete in drama this year, paving the way for HBO to claim its record-extending 22 win in the category with “Bad Education.”

Zahn McClarnon suddenly became “Westworld’s” season two Mvp in the span of an hour thanks to his role as Akecheta, leader of Ghost Nation in the eighth episode, “Kiksuya.” A nomination for Best Drama Supporting Actor would be a groundbreaking moment as the television academy has never nominated a Native American actor for a continuing series.
“Westworld” was nominated for Best Drama Supporting Actor last year for Jeffrey Wright, but he got a promotion this year to the lead category, which could open the door for McClarnon to make history: not only would he be the first Native American actor to receive a nomination for a series, he would also be only the second Native American actor ever nominated in any category, after August Schellenberg contended for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor for his performance as Sitting Bull in the HBO telefilm “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” in...

“Westworld” delivered what many are considering a series best episode Sunday night with the Ghost Nation-focused installment “Kiksuya” led by character actor Zahn McClarnon. Because McClarnon appears in at least five episodes of the show, he joins co-star Anthony Hopkins in the fiercely competitive Drama Supporting Actor race with a shot of earning an Emmy nomination. Can the critical buzz of an emotionally packed episode and the momentum of a looming season finale catapult McClarnon into Emmy history? It should!

The Oscar for Best Supporting Actress went to a wide swath of talented actresses in the 1990s, including Whoopi Goldberg, Marisa Tomei, Anna Paquin, Judi Dench and Angelina Jolie. Arthur Penn’s under-appreciated epic has everything a big-scale western could want — spectacle, interesting characters, good history and a sense of humor. Dustin Hoffman gets to play at least five characters in one as an ancient pioneer relating his career exploits — which are either outrageous tall tales or a concise history of the taking of The West.

Exclusive: Four decades after Dune scribe Frank Herbert published his acclaimed 1972 novel Soul Catcher, the book has been optioned for the big screen by producer Dimitri Villard. The Flight Of he Navigator and Once Bitten producer first pursued the Herbert tome during the 1980s but tabled his film career to run music company ArtistDirect until last year. Now he’s returning to the screen biz with Soul Catcher, about a militant Native American student who kidnaps the 13-year-old white son of a U.S. politician, intending to sacrifice the child for vengeance against wrongs committed against his people. As the captor and the captive flee from hunters across the Pacific Northwest, they form a bond that throws the planned act into question.
The late Herbert’s seminal Dune remains the best-selling science fiction of all time and was adapted into a 1984 feature film by David Lynch and a TV miniseries and sequel in the 2000s.

The last four champs in the category — 2010’s Temple Grandin, 2009’s Grey Gardens and 2008’s Recount and 2007’s Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee — all had their roots in real-life characters and situations.

From Jack leching over Jennifer to John Wayne's farewell and Brando's no-show, these are just some of the greatest moments at the Oscars ceremonies ever
1. When Jack met Jennifer
This is perhaps my favourite Oscar moment ever, and it is from last year: the 85th Academy Awards in 2013. Tellingly, it does not take place up on stage, in the often tense and frozen ritual of the awards ceremony itself, but happens in the cheerful buzz of the post-show melee backstage. This single, endlessly replayed clip probably did more for Jennifer Lawrence's public profile than anything on the big screen.

This week we'll see the first film focusing on the mythological Greek hero Hercules with Kellan Lutz taking the lead in The Legend of Hercules (formerly known as Hercules: The Legend Begins). With a January release date and Die Hard 2 director Renny Harlin, there isn't much hope for this film that feels like a cheap 300 knock-off, but maybe the Summit Entertainment film has some surprises in store. For anyone who might not be convinced, one final trailer has popped up as a last ditch effort to get audiences into theaters Friday, and if you're interested enough to look behind the scenes, there's a featurette too. Watch! Here's the final trailer for Renny Harlin's The Legend of Hercules from Summit Entertainment: And here's the behind the scenes featurette from Spin Media: The Legend of Hercules is directed by Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2), who also wrote the film...

When the first trailer for The Legend of Hercules starring Kellan Lutz was release, it went by the title Hercules: The Legend Begins. But apparently Summit Entertainment liked the new title better. If it feels like this film is being marketed very quickly, you're right. The first trailer just arrived over a couple weeks ago, and now a second full theatrical trailer is here. The film was picked up for distribution and set for a very early release swiftly, so the film is getting pushed fast and hard before arriving in just under a month. It still looks generic, and we doubt Lutz has the power to make this a success, but that's just January for you. Here's the second trailer for Renny Harlin's The Legend of Hercules, originally from Apple: The Legend of Hercules is directed by Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2), who also wrote the film with...

“We didn’t get mad, we got smart,” HBO CEO Michael Fuchs said about hitting The Wall, looking back at HBO stalling in 1984 from the vantage of the early 1990s. Actually, a lot of the rank and file didn’t get mad or smart; we’d seen 125 of our friends and colleagues get shown the door when the company had suddenly flatlined after eight years of phenomenal growth, and what we got was scared.
But it’s to the credit of HBO’s execs that whatever anxieties they may have had, they showed no panic or even nervousness in public. Instead, they poured any concerns into energetically and immediately addressing the question of, “What do we do now?” The world we knew had changed and there was no going back to the Gold Rush days of the late 1970s and early 1980s. NBC is planning to administer a double dose of classic horror, with the news that the network is moving forward with miniseries adaptations of both Roman Polanski’s iconic horror film Rosemary’s Baby and Stephen King’s acclaimed novel The Tommyknockers.
The announcement indicates that NBC has been watching closely as ‘event’ miniseries like CBS’ Under the Dome and FX’s American Horror Story have delivered surprisingly high ratings, and as its own horror series Hannibal has quickly gained a loyal cult following.
NBC president Bob Greenblatt said that the Rosemary’s Baby reboot will in fact be more of a re-imagining of the original Ira Levin novel on which Polanski’s film was based, rather than a direct remake of the film. The miniseries will focus on a young woman and her husband living in Paris and will be an “edge-of-your-seat thriller” comprised of four episodes. Interestingly, the...

In a continuation of what is (for TV fans) one of the most wonderful times of the year, we have moved straight from Comic-Con season to TCA season. Twice a year the networks make presentations to the members of the Television Critics Association, and that’s one of the key times when we learn about what might be in our viewing futures.
NBC had their day on Saturday, and out of that came the announcement of the development of a limited-series adaptation of Rosemary’s Baby, and of Stephen King‘s Tommyknockers. Here are the details:
“Rosemary’s Baby” is a four-hour updated retelling of the bestselling novel by Ira Levin that was later adapted as a feature film about devil worship and the complex relationship between a young husband and wife. In the new version, the couple lives in Paris where this edge-of-your-seat thriller unfolds. Lionsgate is the production company.

With networks getting back in the mini-series game, it’s not too surprising that NBC exec Bob Greenblatt unveiled plans for two new reboots in mini form while talking to the Television Critics Association this weekend. Greenblatt offered that “We need to be in the event business” and went on to back this up by talking the Diane Lane Hillary Clinton biopic and then revealing that the network intends to adapt two horror novels for mini-series, despite both having adaptations already.
The most obviously controversial of the two is Ira Levin’s Rosemary’s Baby, adapted as an incomparable horror film by Roman Polanksi back in 1968. Why the understated and creepy tale needs to be a 4-hour “edge of your seat thriller” is unknown, or why for that matter, the setting needs to switch from Manhattan to Paris. It’s going to be hard to gauge what will come of this project,...

NBC has announced that they will be developing two new limited TV series events. One based on Roman Polanski's classic horror film, Rosemary's Baby, and the other will be another adaptation of Stephen King's 1987 novel The Tommyknockers. This will be the second small screen adaptation of King's novel. The 1993 adaptation sucked, so hopefully this new one will be a lot better.
Rosemary's Baby is a retelling of the bestselling novel by Ira Levin, and "the new version will focus on a young husband and wife living in Paris where 'this edge-of-your-seat thriller unfolds.'"
