Jonah Hill is set to write, direct, and star in Cut Off for Warner Bros. The comedy is said to center on a pair of fraternal twins whose wealthy parents stop supporting them financially. Hill will play one of the twins and World of Reel has heard that the role of the other twin has been offered to Jennifer Lawrence. The production has secured a $10 million California tax credit and plans to start shooting later this year.
This will be Hill’s third gig behind the camera for a narrative feature. He previously directed Mid90s, a coming-of-age movie which followed a thirteen-year-old boy growing up with an abusive older brother and a somewhat absent mother who finds himself drawn to a group of older skateboarders. 2007's Superbad is one of the best comedies of the 2000s. Almost twenty years have passed since its release, and it remains a bold approach to the teen comedy genre that often broke the rules of what was allowed to be shown on screen or not. Superbad has enough in it to make it a risqué comedy, but distributing studio Sony Pictures didn't have an issue with the edgy plot. No, according to writer and star Seth Rogen, their most important note was that Jonah Hill's character could not use the PlayStation that's featured in the film.
Rogen, who co-wrote Superbad with Evan Goldberg when they were teenagers, was at the SXSW festival, where he spoke to Rotten Tomatoes about his starring role in Apple TV+'s latest series, The Studio. In the show, he plays Matt Remick, the head of a production studio who attempts to save the...

Superbad writer and star Seth Rogen reveals that Sony intervened and banned one character from even laying a finger on a PlayStation controller during the events of the 2008 movie. The coming-of-age teen comedy focuses on three social misfits as they try to get with the girls of their dreams during a high-school party, sending them on an absurd odyssey. Alongside producing and writing the feature alongside Evan Goldberg, Superbad stars Rogen as Officer Michaels, who becomes the unlikely friend of Christopher Mintz-Plasse's Fogell when he poses as the now-infamous McLovin.
As Rogen attended the SXSW premiere event for his upcoming series The Studio, the actor was asked by Rotten Tomatoeswhat the most notable studio notes he had received throughout his career. Seth Rogen recently spoke on his personal life-inspired comedy Superbad and if a movie like that could get made today. When inquired if comedy is harder to make in this day and age, the star responded, “The complaint that comedy’s harder than it used to be is not a valid complaint. Maybe it was too easy before. And why should it be? Why shouldn’t it be hard? I like that my job is hard, because I’m trying to do something that requires a huge amount of resources and people’s time and energy.” He added, “I’m constantly meeting teenagers who love Superbad and who think it holds up, and none of them are like: How f*cking dare you have said that?”

Co-writer and star Seth Rogen claims that distributor Sony thought Jonah Hill’s character was “too vile” to interact with a PlayStation console in 2007’s Superbad.
Joint screenwriters Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg put their own teenage experiences in what became their hit 2007 comedy, Superbad – though some of their antics appeared to have been a bit much for distributor, Sony.
While walking the red carpet for his latest comedy, the Apple TV+ series, The Studio, Rogen was asked by Rotten Tomatoes about the funniest note he’d ever received from a company executive. Rogen then revealed that, during the production of Superbad, he was told that Jonah Hill’s character, Seth, was considered so “reprehensible” that he was expressly forbidden from touching a Sony PlayStation.

Seth Rogen recently shared an interesting story about the making of Superbad during a conversation at the SXSW premiere of his new Apple TV+ series The Studio. Rogen revealed that a particular studio note from Sony made him take things personally and even left him a bit insulted.
In the 2007 hit comedy Superbad, Jonah Hill plays a character named Seth, who is based on Rogen’s own teenage experiences. However, during the production process, Sony had an objection to how Hill’s character interacted with a PlayStation 2 in one of the scenes. According to Rogen, the studio felt that Hill’s character was so “reprehensible” that they didn’t want him touching their PlayStation products.
Rogen shared the humorous side of the situation, saying that Sony told the filmmakers, “They were like, ‘We can’t have him interact with our products as a character, because it’s too vile a character.

Dwight "The General" Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone) didn’t give Martin Starr's character Bodhi much of a choice when he muscled in on the entrepreneur’s weed business in Season 1 of Tulsa King. However, Dwight and Bodhi’s profitable partnership slowly evolved into a close friendship, too, and Starr states in a brand-new interview with Collider that he has read a pair of Season 3 scripts. Plus, the actor also reveals when production on the next batch of episodes finally begins. Starr said:
"I mean, I've only just read the first two scripts. We start production next week. I can't tell you anything that I've read in those episodes, but I am excited. This new season is going to be a lot of fun. It looks already like there’s going to be a lot of action, and there are some loose ends that may or may not get tied up.

If you’re a genre aficionado and you see the nameChristopher Landon attached to a new movie, you typically know what you’re going to get. Landon has become one of the most consistent directors in the realm of horror and manages to frequently surprise audiences with just how enjoyable many of his films are. The Happy Death Day movies and Freaky successfully delivered slasher versions of classic concepts like the time loop and body-swap comedies. Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse felt as if you plucked the boys from Superbad and thrust them into a zombie B-movie.

Renowned filmmaker Martin Scorsese wasn't in attendance despite having a cameo on the show, but Rogen did share some insight into what it was like to work with him.

I’ve got some exciting news for anyone who loves a good laugh. Many of us were first introduced to Seth Rogen close to 25 years ago when he played Ken Miller, one of the “freaks” in Freaks and Geeks, then, as part of Judd Apatow’s usual group of actors and comedians he liked to work with, in comedy hits like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Superbad, and the Rogen-starring Knocked Up. It didn’t take long for him to climb the Hollywood ladder, making his feature directorial debut with This Is the End, alongside co-director Evan Goldberg, almost causing an international incident with their second film, The Interview, becoming a producer on projects as varied as The Disaster Artist, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, The Boys, and Pam & Tommy (just to name a few), and starred in films by directors like Steven Spielberg, Danny Boyle, Michel Gondry, and Sarah Polley. Seth Rogen is taking aim at Hollywood itself in the first trailer for his and Evan Goldberg’s upcoming Apple TV+ comedy, “The Studio.” The series, which is produced by Lionsgate Television, will premiere exclusively on the streamer on March 26.
“The Studio” follows Matt Remick (Rogen), an executive for Continental Studios who originally got into the business because of his genuine love of film. But when he’s promoted to become head of Continental, the day-to-day stress quickly transforms his dream job into a waking nightmare.
“I’m honored, obviously, to be one of the people who gets to choose which movies get made and which ones don’t,” Matt says in the trailer. “And I got into all this because, you know, I love movies. But now I have this fear that my job is to ruin them.”
“The job is a meat grinder,” his mentor Amy (Catherine O’Hara) sagely responds.

Close your eyes and tell me quick: What color is Emma Stone’s hair? If your kneejerk (and incorrect) response was “red,” you can blame Judd Apatow.
Producer Apatow realized he had a problem after the comedy Superbad was cast. Martha MacIsaac and Emma Stone were hired to play our heroes’ love interests, but both were brunettes. Come to think of it, so were Michael Cera and Jonah Hill but apparently their body types were enough to tell them apart. Someone asked Apatow what they should do about two brown-haired girlfriends, according to I Am McLovin: How Superbad Became the Biggest Comedy Hit of Its Generation. He considered the problem, took a look at Stone, and suggested, “Well, maybe it could be red or something?”
Stone, making her film debut, didn’t put up a fuss. “We dyed her hair red, which I think she had never done before,” Apatow said.

Emma Stone has been cursing Judd Apatow since 2007 when “Superbad” hit theaters and everyone fell in love with her dyed red hair, the director jokes in a new book.
In an excerpt shared with People from the upcoming book “I Am McLovin: How Superbad Became the Biggest Comedy Hit of Its Generation,” Apatow explained that in order to change up the hair colors of the film’s female leads he made an off-hand remark that, “well, maybe it could be red or something?” That off hand choice has haunted Stone for 18 years.
“So we dyed her hair red, which I think she had never done before,” Apatow said. “And since then, she has cursed me because now people love her with red hair and she’s had to live with that for a lot of her adult life. It was a real tossed-off thought from someone who knows nothing about makeup and hair.

Judd Apatow has insisted an R-rated comedy could still be a huge box office hit.The 57-year-old actor - who has appeared in movies like 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin' and 'Knocked Up' as well as producing the likes of 'Superbad' and 'Step Brothers' and more over the years - has insisted "one person with a great idea" is all that's needed to give the genre a revival by inspiring everyone to "do it again".He told Variety: "These things kind of swing back and forth."If someone made something as funny as ‘The Hangover’ right now, it would make a billion dollars, and everyone would be trying to do that."It ebbs and it flows, and hopefully it’ll flow soon.”Apatow also dismissed the idea that political correctness makes comedy harder than it was in the past.He said: "I don't think there's a content obstacle.

Judd Apatow, who dominated the big screen for more than a decade with comedy hits like “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Superbad,” “Step Brothers” and “Bridesmaids,” has weighed in on R-rated comedy movies vanishing from theaters.
The director, writer and producer told Variety on the “SNL50” carpet that all it takes is “one person with a great idea” to revitalize the genre at the box office. Once there’s another comedy hit, “suddenly everyone wants to do it again,” Apatow said. “These things kind of swing back and forth. If someone made something as funny as ‘The Hangover’ right now, it would make a billion dollars, and everyone would be trying to do that. It ebbs and it flows, and hopefully it’ll flow soon.”
Agreeing with his frequent comedy collaborator Seth Rogen, Apatow said he does not believe comedy is harder than it used to be due to political correctness.

Most people would be delighted to get comedy advice from a veteran like Seth Rogen, but comics who claim that "comedy's getting difficult" and complain about "cancel culture" won't want to hear what the comedian has to say. You might remember when Jerry Seinfeld and a whole slew of other comedians proclaimed that P.C. culture and that the so-called "extreme left" killed comedy. The result of all this, they said, is that comedy just isn't the same as decades prior. Well, Rogen's response is, "Duh."
Seinfeld has since gone back on his harsh statement and publicly says he regrets it, because he came to the same realization that Rogen did. In an interview with Esquire, Rogen shared his thoughts about the state of comedy and those who whine about how difficult it has seemingly gotten to make jokes. The Superbad writer lays it out plain and simple:

Emma Stone has proven herself a versatile actress throughout her career, but her comedic sensibilities have always shined through in her most celebrated performances, including her two Oscar-winning roles in La La Land and Poor Things. Three years after her film debut in Superbad, Stone helmed a high school comedy of her own with her first lead role in Easy A, which earned her the first of her six Golden Globe nominations. In Easy A, Stone plays Olive Pendergast, an unpopular high school student who becomes the talk of the school when a rumor spreads that she lost her virginity.

For a while there, it seemed like James Franco and Seth Rogen were going to be the standouts of the Judd Apatow School of Comedy. Tokin’ it up as a pair of freaks on Freaks and Geeks, the boys went on to also team on movies like Pineapple Express, This Is the End, The Interview, and more. But when Franco started facing accusations of sexual misconduct in 2018, that was pretty much it for both his career and his friendship with Rogen.
Addressing his rift and split with James Franco — who previously said he left his pal in the dust to defend him and that he has also tried to make amends — Seth Rogen could only say, “Honestly, I absorb so little media that it really wasn’t on my radar.”

Seth Rogen is hitting back at claims from some comedians that comedy is hard now in the current political climate.
The 42-year-old filmmaker and comedian spoke to Esquire in a cover story, and addressed some complaints lately that comedy is difficult amid a more politically correct (“P.C.”) culture.
“The complaint that comedy’s harder than it used to be is not a valid complaint,” he said.
Keep reading to find out more…
“Maybe it was too easy before. And why should it be? Why shouldn’t it be hard? I like that my job is hard, because I’m trying to do something that requires a huge amount of resources and people’s time and energy.”
While he acknowledged the line between acceptable and offensive has changed, he argued that’s always been the case.
“What do you wish you could say?” he asked.
“What do you feel has been taken from you?...

Actress Emma Stone has been a staple in Hollywood for many years, after skyrocketing to fame with comedies like Superbad (2007) and Easy A (2010). She continued to make a name for herself in the industry with dozens of other roles and won two Academy Awards for Best Actress, for La La Land in 2017 and Poor Things in 2024. However, she's more than just a movie star — she's dominating the field behind the camera as well.
In 2020, Emma Stone and her husband, Dave McCary — a segment writer and director for Saturday Night Live, whom she met while hosting the show in 2016 — founded a production company called Fruit Tree. “Invincible” is back for Season 3 and boasting the same stellar cast that made the first two so great.
Much of the actors return again to voice their characters based on the Robert Kirkman comic book. Season 3 finds Mark at odds with Cecil all while trying to prepare mentally and physically for the threat of more Viltrumites heading to Earth.

Invincible Season 3 starts streaming on Prime Video on February 6, and the series has accrued many voice actors. Most of the characters have familiar voices tied to big-name actors who might be hard to identify without seeing a face. The series has added eight new actors as well, playing superheroes, villains, and more. Season 3 also builds tensions as Mark struggles to juggle life as a superhero, a Viltrumite, and a teenager.

A night out with your best friends is still the best night ever.
I saw “One of Them Days” in theaters over the weekend and I have to recommend it. It’s a buddy comedy that follows two best friends (Keke Palmer and Sza) who are trying to make rent before they’re kicked out of their apartment. The film is funny and heartfelt – the two leads have a ton of chemistry, you believe they’ve been best friends for a decade – and the plot is wild and entertaining. Ultimately, it’s about what buddy comedies are about: a great friendship that makes each person better. It got me thinking about other awesome buddy comedies out there – so, here are my favorite top seven buddy comedy movies you can stream right now.

Long before she was a two-time Academy Award-winning actor able to tackle some of the toughest, weirdest roles in cinema and television, Emma Stone was just a young actor trying to make it in a cutthroat industry. After a number of TV guest spots in small roles, including a hilarious bit on "Malcolm in the Middle" where she played a bully beefing with the Wilkerson family matriarch, Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), Stone would eventually garner attention with the 2006 hit comedy "Superbad," which was responsible for both her trademark red hair and her career taking off. Before that, however, she played an integral but tiny role on the Disney Channel hit kids show "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody," although it's absolutely impossible to spot her.
"The Suite Life of Zack & Cody" followed twins Zack and Cody Martin (Dylan and Cole Sprouse), who live in the suite of the Tipton Hotel in Boston.

Audiences are probably pretty accustomed to hearing something like "they just don't make 'em like they used to anymore" in regard to movies. It is definitely a different era of cinema where the big-budget blockbusters get all the attention while the independent and grounded genre films fall under the radar of larger audiences. What's interesting is that the blockbuster trend started some time ago in the late '70s and early '80s when directors like Lucas, Scott and Cameron changed the face of genre filmmaking. One of the genres most affected was science fiction, and it seems like most contemporary big blockbusters exist in this genre. However, popcorn movies are losing more and more substance as the years go by. The remakes and reboots are oversaturating the market, along with the newer interconnected universes.
Back when studios took chances on all kinds of movies, hidden gems and unexpected hits would delightfully find an audience.

Zach Galifianakis, Isla Fisher, Gal Gadot, Jon Hamm, and fan favorite Patton Oswalt along with director Greg Mottola (Superbad), couldn't save their 2016 action comedy, Keeping Up With the Joneses. The film should have been a solid comedy hit, but instead tanked at the box office and was savaged by critics and audiences alike. However it has found new life on streaming, and sits at number four on Max's Top 10.
Keeping Up With the Joneses had the star power and director to get audiences excited about the film. Galifianakis was riding high with the Hangover trilogy, as Hamm earned major praise and awards as Don Draper on Mad Men (which ended the year before). Meanwhile, Gadot had been cast as Wonder Woman and appeared in Fast & Furious 6. Fisher appeared in hits like Wedding Crashers and Confessions of a Shopaholic.

As the years go by and societal standards change, some movie genres simply fall by the wayside. From the downfall of the erotic thriller to the stark drop-off in found footage releases, sometimes the decline can not be avoided. Comedy, as a wider genre, is notorious for not aging well. While dedicated cinephiles are inclined to go back and appreciate the Marx Brothers, Harold Lloyd, or Charlie Chaplin films, the average moviegoer isn't. This is even applicable to more "recent" releases like 16 Candles or Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, both of which haven't aged as well as fans had hoped. Due to this trend of comedy not being evergreen, it feels foolish to say that any one niche comedy subgenre will survive the test of time, but if anything can do it,...

From ‘Superbad’ to ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin,’ these Apatow hits still hold up.
One of the big reasons I wanted to get into writing movies is because of Judd Apatow. His comedies are more than just funny – they’re heartfelt and genuine, with imperfect characters doing their best to get on with it. He helped popularize the “antihero” protagonist (Seth Rogan is a good example). Someone who’s not the brightest, not the most attractive, but their heart is in the right place… and they sure are funny. Emma Stone “Blackmailed” Succession Star To Prevent Him From Dropping Out Of Movie With 96% Rt Score
Emma Stone needed to "blackmail" a Succession star to stop him from dropping out of their movie that is now critically acclaimed. Stone's breakout role was in the 2007 comedy Superbad, which was also her film debut. Starring roles in the post-apocalyptic comedy Zombieland and the high school comedy Easy A brought her further recognition. Stone began to make her mark in other genres as well with her role as Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan in The Help and as Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
These projects were followed by several of Emma Stone's best movies, many of which earned her Academy Award nominations or wins, including for her performances in Birdman, La La Land, The Favourite, and Poor Things. There was a time when the mention of "McLovin" would've had people assuming McDonalds had a promotional event happening on Valentine's Day. After 2007 though, thanks to Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and one of the best comedies ever made, "Superbad" made it totally reasonable to have that name on a driver's license. It also became an essential movie about high school, so much so that, years later, people still ask its stars if we'll ever get a sequel. Well, one of the loudest mouths in the movie and the actor who's cursed the most on film, Jonah Hill, has a plan so ridiculous it just might work.
In a 2022 interview with W Magazine, Hill said he would absolutely be down for returning to the world of Seth (Hill), Evan (Cera), and Fogell aka McLovin (Mintz-Plasse) under one condition: they would all have to be in their 80s. Sure, it...

Jonah Hill’s rise to stardom in Hollywood was a coming-of-age comedy that still rules as one of the best comedy films of the 2000s, Superbad.
The film saw three teenagers, played by Hill, Michael Cera, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, making plans to party and lose their virginity before their high school graduation. Interestingly, Hill found his debutant co-star Mintz-Plasse annoying to film with.

Popular is a tough word when it comes to describing movies. Too often, something is given a negative connotation because it's popular. Appealing to a wide range of audiences and connecting with them is not something to be embarrassed about. Liking or disliking a particular film has no morality attached to it, and there's often a reason that so many viewers feel seen by a project and are engaged by it. However, there are plenty of films that were theatrical hits that have become mythologized by the culture that doesn't live up to the standard set by their popularity.
Critiquing these films is not to say that they aren't good. They are, and even if their initial shine has worn off in the years since they first premiered, that doesn't make them any less fun to watch. It's easy to say that the biggest movie box office bombs of all...

Jonah Hill managed to pick up two Oscar nominations before his 30th birthday. It is a pretty impressive fete since the bulk of Hill’s early film work had been in outrageous comedies like “Superbad” and “21 Jump Street,” which seldom are recognized by Academy voters. He did take some serious roles in “Moneyball” and “The Wolf of Wall Street” which earned him those two nominations.
Hill started his career as a playwright. He wrote and performed a number of plays while he was attending The New School in New York City. Those plays led him to meeting the children of Dustin Hoffman who then got Hill an audition for a small role in “I Heart Huckabees.” That film lead him to associations with Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow, with whom he has worked a number of times. That led to work with Joel and Ethan Coen, Martin Scorsese and more.

Before directing the iconic teen comedy Superbad, Greg Mottola wrote and directed the dysfunctional family dramedy, The Daytrippers, for his feature directorial debut. The film follows Eliza (Hope Davis), who sets out to investigate whether her husband is cheating on her, and her family, who tag along to help her find and confront him. With a terrific ensemble cast including Parker Posey, Liev Schreiber, and Stanley Tucci, The Daytrippers is a tragicomic portrait of a complex and often contentious family dynamic, that still highlights the value of leaning on your family through hard times, depicted through Eliza’s relationship with her sister Jo (Posey).

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have assembled a truly star-studded lineup of guest stars for their upcoming comedy The Studio, an Apple TV+ series set to deliver a hilarious and scathing look at Hollywood and the industry that runs it. Rogen stars in the satirical series as a Hollywood executive who rubs elbows with some of the industry's biggest names — including the likes of Martin Scorsese, Anthony Mackie, Zoë Kravitz, Charlize Theron, Ron Howard, Bryan Cranston, Zac Efron, and Olivia Wilde, all of whom will appear in the series as heightened versions of themselves.
And during a recent conversation with Vanity Fair, Goldberg and Rogen opened up about the process of making The Studio and how personal it all was for them. According to The Studio's official logline, the comedy will follow Rogen's Matt Remick, a movie studio exec, as he and his "core team of infighting executives battle...
