It’s hard to talk about “A Futile and Stupid Gesture” — a somewhat funny and largely conventional movie about a very funny and wholly unconventional man — without talking about the film’s borderline-insane framing device. If you know absolutely nothing about “National Lampoon” co-founders Doug Kenney (Will Forte) and Henry Beard (Domhnall Gleeson), and would like to keep it that way until David Wain’s biopic can illuminate you on its own terms, consider this a reluctant spoiler warning. For everybody else… well, it’s certainly a choice.

Here’s the gist: Adapted from Josh Karp’s book of the same name, “A Futile and Stupid Gesture” retraces the true story of how two subversive Harvard grads took the road less traveled, started the most dangerous satirical magazine in American history, and became ground zero for a generation of comics that included the likes of Bill Murray and Gilda Radner.

From a certain perspective, monster movies might not seem to be as relevant during monstrous times. But in an age when our fears seem larger than life and the world constantly seems as though it’s on the brink of collapse, the best examples of the genre can almost assume a documentary-like authenticity, reflecting our reality as vividly as vérité ever could.

Nineties alt-comedy troupe the State will release a new oral history, The Union of the State, detailing their rise, dissolution, reunion and staggering dispersion and influence throughout the comedy world.

The book arrives May 3rd and features interviews with all 11 members of the State: Todd Holoubek, David Wain, Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, Ken Marino, Robert Ben Garant, Thomas Lennon, Joe Lo Truglio, Kevin Allison, Kerri Kenney-Silver and Michael Patrick Jann.

Ant-Man, Marvel Studios' 12th entry into their cinematic universe, offers die-hard comic book fans another heaping of movie easter eggs for them to enjoy. As was the case with earlier Marvel movies, Ant-Man takes delight in bring able to let viewers connect the dots between Marvel's other entries into their shared movie universe, as well as pay homage to the Marvel comics where Ant-Man and his pals originally came from.

When Edgar Wright abruptly abandoned Marvel’s Ant-Man last year, the script went through several big rewrites – at the hands of Adam McKay, Gabrial Ferrari, Andrew Barrer and the titular bite-sized Avenger himself, Paul Rudd. While we were initially told that those “giant” rewrites happened to tweak the film and conform it to Marvel’s vision, we’re now hearing that they could have also been made to include references to another upcoming Avenger: Spider-Man.

That’s right, rumor has it that Spider-Man will be the focus of several Easter eggs in Ant-Man. The report comes from Latino-Review, who state that Ant-Man will plant “plenty of seeds” to usher in the web crawler’s debut McU appearance in Captain America: Civil War next year. Film Festival back in 2013 and closing the Tribeca Film Fest the following year, in its July release, Begin Again performed quite well at the indie box office and generally well revered. A good will tour for a revitalizing look at Keira Knightley, as well as another exuberant performance from Mark Ruffalo. Luckily the scandal erupting over CeeLo Green happened afer it could have a potential detrimental effect on driving audiences away from the theater.

Come Undone: Wain’s Cliché Buster Episodically Funny

Every now and then, director David Wain delivers a great film with his certain brand of offbeat humor darkly shining, particularly with Role Models (2008) and Wet Hot American Summer (2001). At the very least, his less successful ventures feature standout performances from someone in his regular crew of comedic comrades (Michaela Watkins in Wanderlust, for instance). But arriving with the Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd headlined They Came Together (yeah, it’s supposed to mean that, too), finds Wain at his most strained since the episodically structured The Ten. Except, this film might have actually benefitted from a string of vignettes harpooning ridiculous rom-com tropes rather than the befuddling exercise at hand centered on two people that we’re watching solely as performers engaging in sketches rather than actual characters, utilizing a variety of broad comedic styles that feel lifted from the likes of The Naked Gun.

How To Save a Life: Carney’s Anticipated American Film a Pleasantly Loveable

Though trudging through a somewhat ungainly and slightly anachronistic set-up, John Carney’s latest, Begin Again (originally titled Can a Song Save a Life?) manages to gain a momentous degree of charm in its latter half, ending on a note that’s as satisfyingly untethered as its opening moments are rigidly formulated. Inexplicably, Carney is also able to squeeze some magic from a cast that seems staggeringly opposed to such a stunt, at least judging from a multitude of similar packaged deals in a squalid market of workmanlike indie films featuring such flora and fauna. While the music is hardly as catchy as the Academy Award winning compilations from his 2006 film, Once, a buoyant attitude sometimes fills in here, at least enough to make for an emotionally satisfying final act.

Writer and director David Wain has become a respected staple of the comedy scene over the course of his career, with a filmography that includes movies such as Wet Hot American Summer, The Ten, and Role Models, as well as tv shows that include The State and Childrens’ Hospital. News that he was working on a new movie was thus greeted with excitement by many of his fans. Titled They Came Together, Wain takes on directing duties along with co-writing the screenplay with Michael Showalter. The cast includes Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Michael Shannon, Cobie Smulders, Ellie Kemper, and Max Greenfield. The first trailer for the film has now been released, and can be seen below. Molly (Amy Poehler) and Joel (Paul Rudd) are likable singles who reside in New York that we immediately want to get together and stay together but beyond the initial thrills of seeing them meet, the material of David Wain’s They Came Together soon turns disappointingly repetitive. Mimicking The Shop Around the Corner and You’ve Got Mail, Molly’s small candy business goes up against Joel’s employer- the Corporate Candy Company. They have direct personal conflicts with each other but there is an undeniable pull of attraction between them that can’t be ignored. From ridiculing falling-in-love montages to klutzy bumblings on dates, this film in no way approaches the absolute zaniness of the best of Wain’s previous achievement with...

He made a brief appearance as “White Power Dave” in Marvel One-Shot All Hail the King, but it appears as if the studio now have even bigger plans for Dexter and Avatar actor Matt Gerald.

As an inmate of Seagate Prison, Gerald’s character butted heads with Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin wannabe, Trevor. This could potentially link to Ant-Man as Scott Lang (played by Paul Rudd) did spend some time behind bars in the comic books before being paroled for good behaviour.

This leads us to wonder whether we’ll perhaps see Lang come to blows with Dave while serving his sentence or whether they both escape when The Ten Rings broke out Trevor. It’s all connected, and it’s thing type of thing which really distinguishes Marvel!

Of course, Gerald’s role in All Hail the King was a minor one, so there’s always the possibility that...

David Wain’s latest, They Came Together should have a full trailer soon, but for now enjoy a funny clip and even a funny poster. The rom-com spoof stars Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler, and if you’re familiar with Wain’s work (The State, Wet Hot American Summer, The Ten, Stella) you will notice he’s back to his old tricks of pointing out the absurd in hilarious fashion.

This time around it’s the romance genre and favorites of everyone (as it should be) Poehler and Rudd tackle chemistry like only they can. It didn’t work with Tina Fey and Paul Rudd, as Admission was on my worst of 2013 selection, so let’s hope this one pulls off the laughs instead.

Filmmaker David Wain’s reputation in the comedy world has seen a steady increase since the release of his first feature film Wet Hot American Summer, as he has followed it up with well-received movies such as The Ten and Role Models, as well as working on shows such as The State and Childrens’ Hospital. David Wain and Michael Showalter, the team that brought us Wet Hot American Summer, has a new comedy coming to Sundance this year called They Came Together. The movie stars Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd, and the movie is supposed to be spoofing romantic comedies. I'm not really a big fan of spoofs, but there is smart way to make a spoof and a stupid way to make one. It looks like they did this one right.

After having already made world-changing cinematic statements on adolescence (Wet Hot American Summer), religion (The Ten), service (Role Models), and community (Wanderlust), I teamed up with Michael Showalter to take on a topic that (to our knowledge) has yet been seen in the movies: Romance — particularly heterosexual romance between two white people.

Our next idea was to mix this romance story with humor – so you could almost call this a Romantic-Comedy, so to speak.

The romantic comedy genre is both an easy target and somehow difficult to spoof properly. We have high hopes, however, for Role Models writer-director David Wain, who is putting the box office disappointment of Wanderlust behind him by putting two of his Wet Hot American Summer ensemble, Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd, back together for They Came Together. Returning behind the camera for his follow-up feature to 2012’s Wanderlust, David Wain is about to share with the world his latest comedy, They Came Together, at Sundance later this month.

The film reunites him with a slew of past collaborators, with Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler leading the charge in the romantic-comedy with a spoof twist, a blend not often seen on the big screen at all.

Scheduling complications always come into play, but it still stings that we're going to miss David Wain's latest, They Came Together. The rom-com send-up stars Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler, and as you can see from the first clip, this is Wain operating in the absurd style of The State, Wet Hot American Summer, and Stella rather than his more traditional features like Role Models and Wanderlust. Chicago – Director Lee Daniels is on a mission of education. With now two generations removed from the height of the 1960s civil rights movement, Daniels hopes to revive and highlight that history in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” – the sensitive and emotional story of one family’s journey through the winds of change.

The story behind the unusual title designation – the addition of Lee Daniels’ name – was necessary because of another film entitled “The Butler” from 1916. Daniels’ version encompasses 80 years in America through a crucial time for African Americans, as it follows the path of a butler – portrayed by Forest Whitaker – as he makes it to the highest level of his profession, a job at the White House. As Whitaker’s character serves presidents from Eisenhower to Reagan, his is a father to a son who is right in the middle of the 1960s Freedom Riders, lunch counter sit-ins and the Panther Party.

We watch films to experience heightened emotions, one of the main ingredients being love. 90% of all Hollywood movies have some sort of love story shoehorned in, whether it truly belongs there or not, because Hollywood seems to think that’s the only way to rope in the female audience.

Romantic comedy anthologies are becoming rather popular these days, particularly ones that revolve around a particular holiday, but comedy anthologies are a hard thing to come by — 2007's The Ten comes to mind as does the classic Kentucky Fried Movie — but coming early next year is Movie 43, which stars almost the entirety of Hollywood and has a director list almost as long. On paper, “Wanderlust” probably looks like your standard high concept romantic comedy. Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd are two New Yorker’s displaced by job loss who decide to go on the road and figure out what to do with their lives. They wind up on a rural commune called Elysium where the conventions of modern living and societal standards have been thrown out the window. Hijinks ensue. But for those in the know who’ve been following the career of David Wain and his group of pals since they first turned heads on the MTV sketch comedy show "The State" in the mid-‘90s, the humor of “Wanderlust” is probably a little bit stranger than your standard rom-com. Wain’s comedic sensibilities stray a little more towards the avant-garde than modern movie audiences might expect.

Who’S It For? If you’re a fan of Wain’s other films (Wet Hot American Summer, The Ten) along with the comedy of Paul Rudd or “The State,” this film is for you.

Expectations: Aniston, hmm? That was my thought. Then I remembered The Switch. The concept was terrible, but Jason Bateman and Aniston weren’t a bad team. I like Rudd, so I figured this pairing could work. Plus, I caught one second of the preview and saw Aniston in bed with Akerman. So there’s that.
