The holidays are now in full swing, with Thanksgiving arriving later this week. And as always, we’d like to remind you that horror can provide the perfect escape from holiday stress.

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to horror titles perfect for Thanksgiving. These picks avoid some of the most obvious choices, like Blood Rage (available on Night Flight+) or Thanksgiving (on Netflix), in favor of more unexpected holiday horror offerings.

These titles include cult classics that bring nail-biting tension and/or extra servings of cheese, all set during the Thanksgiving holiday. Here’s where you can stream them this week.

If just its box office numbers had been considered, then The Stepfather would have remained a standalone movie. However, the 1987 cult flick ultimately found an audience after tanking in theaters; it went on to become a major success on both video and television. So the production company behind the original movie, Itc, went ahead with putting cinema’s deadliest daddy back on the big screen. The pressing question at the time though, was whether or not Terry O’Quinn would return. And if he did, how would his character even come back?

During the mid-1970s, television producer Aaron Spelling and the writing duo of Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts hit upon the most spectacularly novel idea: Viewers loved watching women solve crimes. The eureka moment occurred in 1974 when the great and ludicrously beautiful Angie Dickinson scored a primetime hit with "Police Woman." While I'd argue Dickinson could've burned up the Nielsen ratings via weekly readings of Russian literature shot at the Bob's Big Boy in Burbank, she was a must-watch sensation as a glamorously attired detective. Though the scripts were rigorously formulaic for a '70s hour-long cop show, Dickinson's showbiz rep attracted a host of top tier guest stars; "Police Woman" didn't have much of a hook, but thanks to its star, it had plenty of sizzle.

It took some prodding (ABC execs Barry Diller and Michael Eisner abhorred Spelling's pitch), but "Charlie's Angels" became the breakout hit of the 1976 season.

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Pegasus", Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) is reunited with Admiral Erik Pressman (Terry O'Quinn), his former commanding officer on board a ship called the U.S.S. Pegasus. Pressman is visiting the Enterprise to reveal that Starfleet intelligence has located the missing Pegasus, presumably destroyed 15 years ago. It's their mission to either salvage the Pegasus or destroy it before nearby Romulans can cannibalize its technology.

In some meaningful asides, Riker and Pressman talk about the "final mission" of the Pegasus, and how there are some things they have been keeping secret for the last 15 years, hoping that Starfleet never finds out. Like most Admirals on "Star Trek," Pressman is up to something shady, and he had convinced a young Ensign Riker to go along with it. Because Pressman is played by Terry O'Quinn, audiences were likely suspicious immediately; O'Quinn was an expert...

Family horror is huge right now, dealing with everything from generational trauma in Hereditary to learning the ugly truth about a partner in Ready or Not. But its by no means a new concept, and 1987 gave us one of the most memorable family members imaginable in The Stepfather. Starring Terry O'Quinn and Jill Schoelen, this classic slasher pulled inspiration from a real-life mass murderer. In a story ripped straight from the headlines, The Stepfather centers on a teenager who suspects that her new stepdad might have killed his previous family - and she and her mother are next. The movie was successful enough to spawn two sequels and a remake in 2009. The sequels are pretty mediocre, but thats not unusual for a horror series; its the remake with Dylan Walsh that completely falls flat against the original.

It’s no spoiler to say that M. Night Shyamalan makes a cameo appearance in his latest movie Trap. After all, Shyamalan shows up in all of his movies, a tribute to his hero Alfred Hitchcock. But as much as he wants to follow in the footsteps of the master of suspense, Shyamalan has the heart of an ’80s schlockmeister.

For evidence, look no further than Trap. Yes, the film has a Hitchcock-worthy premise, in which suburban dad Cooper (Josh Hartnett) finds the pop concert he’s attending with his pre-teen daughter interrupted by police hunting a serial killer called the Butcher. The problem? Cooper is the Butcher, which audiences learn when he checks in on one of his victims via remote camera.

Scream Factory has announced today that The Stepfather and The Strangers will be joining the world of 4K Ultra HD with brand new releases.

Both films get a 4K Ultra HD upgrade on September 10, 2024, and they’re available to preorder now.

Michelle Rodriguez's 2006 movie The Breed is receiving a remake from Curmudgeon Films and Daro Film Distribution. Producers Nathan and Griff Furst will direct the remake, with Grace Caroline Currey in the lead role. The movie has the opportunity to improve on the original, which was poorly received.

Michelle Rodriguez's poorly reviewed horror movie The Breed will be receiving a remake. The original 2006 title, which was produced by Scream and A Nightmare on Elm Street director Wes Craven, followed a group of friends whose tranquil island vacation is ruined when they are attacked by a pack of genetically modified killer dogs. The cast of the movie, which has a 27% score on Rotten Tomatoes, also included Nashville's Oliver Hudson, Orange is the New Black's Taryn Manning, The L Word's Eric Lively, and The Good Doctor's Hill Harper.

When it comes to the 1980s, there is no shortage of serviceable horror flicks to max out your nostalgia meter and remind us all why that particular decade reigns supreme for us horror hounds. While the 70s may have perfected the slasher with John Carpenter’s Halloween and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre– The 80s delivered on bringing to life some of the greatest creations in the genre. A dream stalking killer with knives for fingers, a summer camp slaughter committed by a giant in a hockey mask, a sadistic demon who loves pain as much as pleasure, and who could forget the slew of iconic and cult status slashers that have spawned franchises still trucking along today. I’m looking at you Leprechaun. But today, my friends, we’re going to be discussing a different kind of horror movie. A movie that breaks the mold from the prototypical horror outing.

The Phantom of the Opera is sometimes considered one of the Universal Monsters. I get it. From the 1925 version that gave us one of the most infamous unmasking sequences ever courtesy of the great Lon Chaney Sr., through the Hammer iteration with Herbert Lom, all the way up to the 2004 film that gave a lot of us our intro to Gerard Butler. Earlier this month, it was announced that Platinum Dunes, the production company headed up by Michael Bay and Bradley Fuller, are teaming up with director Jonathan Liebesman – who they previously worked with on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and their 2014 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – to make a werewolf movie called Wolf Night. Now Deadline reports that Wolf Night has found a home at Sony’s Screen Gems.

As the ’80s came to a close, so too did the first wave of the slasher cycle. While they would continue to be produced into the next decade, 1989 was the last gasp of a dying genre. Returning franchises and hopeful upstarts alike struggled to make an impact. We all know you can never really kill a slasher, but it would take Scream‘s reinvention of the concept in 1996 to renew broad interest.

Cutting Class, another ’89 entry in the subgenre, marked the directorial debut — and, as it turned out, sole directorial effort — from Rospo Pallenberg, who notably co-wrote Excalibur, contributed uncredited rewrites on Exorcist II: The Heretic, and served as a “creative associate” on Deliverance. Despite his pedigree, Pallenberg did not write the script; that was the work of Steve Slavkin, who would go on to create Nickelodeon’s pivotal series Salute Your Shorts.

The sounds of “Lady in Red” by Chris De Burgh leak into the room from the party outside, adding an air of mystery to the masked man who emerges from the shadows. Still ready for sex, the young woman teases the masked man about his disguise, but when he doesn’t respond, she realizes that he’s not her boyfriend.

The masked man produces a knife and begins stabbing her stomach, pushing her back down onto the waterbed. Springs stream from the liquidy mattress, and blood splatters on Sears Portrait Studio glam pictures hanging on the wall.

Filming is set to begin this October on the upcoming horror movie The Cousin, and Bloody Disgusting has learned this week that a true horror legend is involved in the project.

From writer/director Alexander Garcia, The Cousin will feature effects and makeup from Jason Baker (Callosum Studios) as well as makeup effects icon Tom Savini!

There’s something inherently unsettling about teeth, and the addition of someone prodding at them with sharp instruments is especially invasive. On the other side of that coin, the negative association with dentistry can impact the professionals. Cult filmmaker Brian Yuzna tapped into these fundamental fears with his 1996 direct-to-video film, The Dentist, and its 1998 sequel, The Dentist 2.

In fact, Yuzna knew he could sell the movie based on the title alone, so he solicited writers to pitch him on the concept. It was his old pals Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli — for whom Yuzna had produced Re-Animator and From Beyond — that cracked the script. Charles Finch (who went on to executive produce David Cronenberg’s Spider) was later brought in to punch it up.

Watching Terry O’Quinn descend into murderous fury in The Stepfather is akin to watching a storm brew: from the start there’s no question about his sanity, his moral character, or his ability and willingness to commit heinous crimes to protect his fragile belief, but as his mask of timid domesticity begins to crack, revealing the insidious face underneath, it’s impossible to look away. Thanks largely in part to O’Quinn’s monumental performance, the film works as a slasher picture, albeit an occasionally campy one. But the real meat on the movie’s bones is the richly layered script. James Gunn on Wednesday shut down comic Scott Adams’ shocking tweet that urged parents with violent teenagers to “watch people die” or “kill your son” by pointing out he was a violent teen addict who managed to turn his life around.

“Hey Scott Adams: As someone who was himself a violent teenager addicted to drugs & entered recovery with the help & love of his family, as well as someone who has seen dozens of other young men stay sober & become fruitful members of society, these are not the only two options,” Gunn tweeted.

Shout! Factory is celebrating Halloween months early with the launch of its new horror-themed streaming channel Scream Factory TV, set to bow this spring.

Based on Shout! Factory’s “Scream Factory” brand, and following the recent launch of the company’s Shout! Factory TV service, Scream Factory TV will offer horror films, thrillers and science-fiction films, with a particular focus on cult classics. The titles will be available both on demand and as a 24/7 stream of the films.

The channel will launch this April with an initial slate of 30 titles. Notables films include “Black Christmas,” “Dark Star,” “Sleepaway Camp” and “The Last Man on Earth.” In addition, two George Romero films, “Night of the Living Dead” and “Day of the Dead,” will stream on the service. Ballyhoo, the art of selling the public something they don’t want, has never changed—but like the devil it has assumed many disguises. In the 19th century small towns were inundated with colorful broadsides, barn-sized murals promoting the arrival of the circus or a traveling vaudeville show. The 20th century made do with the daily newspaper’s theater section—all in black and white but jam-packed with exciting possibilities. Today we have Twitter and your neighbor’s cousin’s friend on Facebook. That’s not exactly progress.

The movie advertisements of a not-too-distant yesterday were called ad mats. They permeated the entertainment sections of the dailies, crammed together side by side like post-war housing developments. They were in close competition for our undivided attention so the artwork was designed to attract—and shock—the most jaundiced soul.

Exclusive: Producers Maryann Garger and Michael Becker have partnered to launch Imprint Family Entertainment.

The new division of Becker’s Imprint Entertainment will focus on creating, developing and producing family content across all media, including film, TV and podcasts.

Its first project is Groove Tails, an animated feature starring Jamie Foxx, which is currently in production. Bob Logan (The Lego Ninjago Movie) is directing, from an original script by Johnny Mack (Dad Stop Embarassing Me!). Foxx is also producing, alongside Garger and Becker.

Shudder is pulling out all the shivery stops to commemorate the startling fact that we are exactly halfway to the most beloved date on any horror fan’s calendar, Halloween. Yes, that’s right, this month (April) is the six-month mark and the world’s scariest streaming outlet is celebrating with “Halfway to Halloween,” a massive slate of programming that begins on April 1 and continues throughout the rest of the month.

This is no April Fool’s joke (although we have some if you want). Shudder is rolling out a brand new batch of exclusive and/or original programming, including the second season of its acclaimed Creepshow series, the premiere of a new series of original short films called Deadhouse Dark, the highly anticipated sequel to its In Search of Darkness documentary, the return of The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs, and the 2021 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.

A throwback to all the B-grade knockoffs that followed such hit late ’80s/early ’90s household thrillers as “The Stepfather,” “Pacific Heights,” and “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” “Paradise Cove” will be nobody’s idea of an original movie, let alone a good one. Still, it provides a degree of schlock entertainment value, as a young couple discover their Malibu fixer-upper comes with a crazy homeless woman squatting on the premises, itching to turn homicidal … again. Low on suspense and plausibility but high on tasteless and absurd ideas, Martin Guigui’s film does offer undiscriminating viewers some fun, albeit more of a laughing-at than laughing-with variety.

HBO Max has a major job on its hands to justify its approximately $15 a month subscription fee, especially given the strong competition out there from established names like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Disney Plus faced a similar challenge last year in arriving onto an already-saturated streaming marketplace, but at least had the advantage of major series like The Mandalorian to promote. While HBO Max will eventually be home to the Snyder cut of Justice League, and has some originals for its first week of availability, the big draw right now is its enormous back-catalogue of movies.

Welcome to the HBO Max era! WarnerMedia’s streaming giant arrived on May 27 and is absolutely bursting with Warner movies, TV shows, and other titles. But time waits for no man or streaming service and each new month HBO Max will be expected to bring new content to the table. Things get started in June 2020 with the first batch of HBO Max new releases.

To be clear, the majority of the original series coming to HBO Max actually belongs to HBO. Shows like I May Destroy You (June 7), Perry Mason (June 21), and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark (June 28) all belong to HBO…which now just happens to be a part of HBO Max. Confusing stuff, we know, but rest assured that if you have HBO Max you’ll get these shows…and if you only have HBO, you can go ahead and just get HBO Max for the same price anyway.

HBO Max launches May 27 with a whole lot of content ready to stream immediately. But throughout the nascent streamer’s first month, even more titles will be added, from HBO Max originals like “Adventure Time: Distant Lands Bmo,” to old favorites like “Amelie,” “Black Beauty” and “The Bucket List.”

Other brand-new HBO Max originals include the third season of comedy “Search Party,” and the second seasons of “Doom Patrol,” and “Esme & Roy,” all coming June 25, and on June 18, the second season of “Summer Camp Island” and the series premiere kids competition series “Karma.”

In a small town, Stephanie (Harriet Rees) is recovering from a broken leg, when she suspects one of her neighbours (William Meredith) as being a famous murderer. Once confronted, the neighbour turns against his accuser, while trying to remain undiscovered by authorities. A North Bank Entertainment production, 4Digital Media will release this title in late July. The film's U.S. release poster is hosted here. The American poster shows both central characters. Since starring as Dr. Sean McNamara on Ryan Murphy's FX plastic-surgery drama Nip/Tuck, the actor has gone on to series regular roles on CBS' Unforgettable and The CW's Life Sentence. The most recent of his long list of television credits are recurring appearances on NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and ABC's Whiskey Cavalier.

On the film side, Walsh starred as the title character in Screen Gems' 2009 thriller The Stepfather opposite Penn Badgley, and his other credits include Secretariat, The Lake House, We Were Soldiers, Congo, Nobody's Fool and Where the Heart Is.
