2007s An American Crime contains some of the most horrific abuse ever seen on-screen, and its made all the more disturbing due to being based on a true story. Directed by Tommy OHaver and starring Elliot Page and Catherine Keener, An American Crime tells the story of Sylvia Likens (Page), an Indianapolis teen who finds herself in the care of a family friend, Gertrude Baniszewski (Keener). However, shortly after arriving in the Baniszewski home, Sylvia finds herself subjected to a campaign of brutal torture at the hands of Gertrude, Gertrudes children, and many local neighborhood kids.
An American Crime is nothing short of disturbing. Whats even more disturbing, however, is the true crime on which its based. It would be unfair to say that An American Crime pulled no punches in its depiction of the abuse and murder of the real Sylvia Likens, because in reality it pulled several. The...

Station 19 alum Okieriete Onaodowan has been tapped to play the title role in AMC’s Demascus, a comedic sci-fi series from playwright Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm, Deadline has confirmed.
Desmascus, picked up in February as part of AMC’s straight-to-series development model, is executive produced by former Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul EP Mark Johnson, via his Gran Via Productions banner. The AMC Studios-produced series is expected to debut next year on both AMC and AMC+.
Created by Chisholm, Demascus follows Demascus (Onaodowan), a 33-year-old Black man on a mission of self-discovery and the burgeoning field of digital psychiatry that might be the key to defining his truest self. The series is a comedic, genre-fluid, coming-of-age story with a reality-bending premise that explores the gulf between Black male perspectives, while also attempting to answer Demascus’ personal question: “Who am I?”
American Crime’s Kirk Moore is showrunner with Myki Bajaj of Gran Via producing.

Exclusive: Clayton Cardenas (Mayans M.C.) has signed on to star opposite Taraji P. Henson in Alessandro Camon’s drama Time Alone, based on his play of the same name, which will enter production in Los Angeles in July.
In the film, Cardenas will play Gabriel, a young man convicted of killing a gang rival. A dramatic dead end of heavy-handed storytelling, AMC‘s 61st Street loads its deck so obviously that its best intentions and first-rate cast barely stand a chance. Emmy winner Courtney B. Vance (American Crime Story) is, as always, excellent as an underdog public defender Franklin Roberts, who’s taking on one Last Big Case. And should you think it’s mere coincidence that he keeps struggling for breath and appears to be nursing a private pain all the time, welcome to the melodramatic style of series creator Peter Moffat, whose devices here are only slightly less ludicrous than in his Showtime series Your Honor (one of the biggest wastes in Bryan Cranston‘s brilliant career). (Credit: James Washington/AMC) Vance is matched at every step by King Richard Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis as his politically ambitious and decidedly outspoken wife Martha, whose run for public office in Chicago on a...

2021 was a great year for TV.
There was some great programming to get us through a difficult year.
But there were also some terrible returning dramas that squandered excellent opportunities to tell good storylines.
We spoke to the entire TV Fanatic staff to get insight into what worked and didn't work for returning dramas in 2021.

King Lear meets Desperate Housewives may be a silly comparison, but it seems to fit.
The narrative, the acting, the nuance, the close-to-home-ness of the struggles of the rich -- all is insane, and all is superb.
Season 3 is just as outrageous as its prior seasons, and we can't get enough. As is the case for every Succession season finale, the third one is enough to keep us up at night... again.

Allblk, AMC Networks’ streamer for Black content, has greenlit “Send Help,” a coming-of-age dark comedy created by “Insecure” recurring star Jean Elie and writer and story editor Mike Gauyo.
“Send Help” will follow Fritz (Elie), a young first generation Haitian American struggling to overcome the challenges of “making it” in Hollywood, while coming to terms with a recent family tragedy. He relocates to L.A. from Brockton, Mass., all while trying to be the new man of the family and exploring the Southern California dating scene. Throughout the series, Fritz fights to conquer his feelings of imposter syndrome, the Hollywood community and his family issues. Rather than address his shortcomings head on, he chooses to deny and avoid the issues that everyone else can see.
In “Insecure,” Elie played Issa’s (Issa Rae) younger brother Ahmal. He has also appeared in episodes of “The Eric Andre Show” and “American Crime.

Spoiler alert: This column contains light spoilers about the Nov. 2 episode titled “The Grand Jury.”
On the penultimate episode of “Impeachment: American Crime Story,” Monica Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein) closes her testimony before the grand jury in the Clinton perjury case by tearfully declaring “I hate Linda Tripp.” The jury, which had begun its service in an adversarial position and asked Lewinsky some tough questions, has fallen for her: “I know, that’s right,” declares an unseen juror. “Forget her!” What sounds like a second voice says, “What goes around comes around.”
The “American Crime Story” franchise hasn’t been shy about a certain narrative gaudiness in the past. But this strikes the viewer as, finally, too much. That Lewinsky actually said this is a matter of historical record. Whether or not they really did, the jurors rooting for her represents one more instance of the show throwing its narrative power behind one character.

Ventana Sur’s Blood Window Works in Progress sidebar, along with the event’s Screenings and project pitchings, have firmly cemented the annual event as one of the standout dates for genre cinema in Latin America and abroad. This year, six works in progress will screen as part a hybrid Ventana Sur market which will run Nov. 29 through Dec. 3.
The 2021 selection of works in progress can, in some ways, be seen as a return to form for the event. Over the past several years, the types of films screened in the section have diversified to include science fiction, fantasy and thriller propositions, in addition to the traditional horror flicks on which it was founded. For 2021, however, terror is the name of the game once again, with all six films self-defining as either horror, thriller or a combination of the two genres.
Also notable is the impressive spread of countries contributing to the section.

Last Year’s Winner: “Watchmen”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: Repeat winners aren’t the norm in Limited Series, and while they do happen, it’s more common to see networks go on hot streaks — albeit brief ones. Currently, HBO has won the Best Limited Series category in back-to-back years, first for “Chernobyl” and then for “Watchmen.” The premium cable giant has also won in three of the last four years and seven of the last 11. Its last win gave it more trophies for Best Limited Series than any other network in history, and yet HBO has still never won more than twice in a row. Only one network has: NBC, from 1986 – 1988.
Fun Fact: Speaking of repeats, only four series have earned more than two nominations in the Limited Series category: “Horatio Hornblower” and “Fargo” both have three, “American Horror Story” has four, and “Prime Suspect” is the all-time leader with five.
Still Eligible: No.

Sarah Paulson is one of the most popular stars of American Horror Story.
The actress has been with the show since the beginning, appearing in all but one season.
When she was absent from American Horror Story 1984, fans had one question:
Where is Sarah Paulson?
Now, it seems like fans will have that question for the years to come.
The 46-year-old appeared on Watch What Happens Live on Wednesday night and got candid about her future with the series could be.
"I don't know," she responded when asked about what she could be working with Ryan Murphy on in the future.
"It's the first time in about three years where I don't know," the star added.
"I think this is my last season of Horror Story, probably. I mean, I don't know."
"Every time he comes to me with some wackadoodle-stoodle character I tend to be like, 'Yes! Let's do it!

James Corden announced he’d joined the “Impeachment: American Crime Story” fan club on Wednesday’s “Late Late Show” and recapped the first episode for viewers who have yet to jump on the bandwagon. But while he was giving everyone a synopsis of the Ryan Murphy-created anthology’s Monica Lewinsky-Bill Clinton scandal installment, he also managed to slip in a plug for a company near and dear to his heart: Weight Watchers.
“There’s a lot of ’90s references, but sometimes, they’ll reference something that you didn’t know was a ’90s reference because it is something that has really endured across the decades, showing how truly great the product actually is,” Corden said, before cutting to an actual “Impeachment” scene between Monica Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein) and Linda Tripp (Sarah Paulson), where the two former White House employees discuss the lacking quality of the meals...

Last Year’s Winner: Regina King, “Watchmen”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: Rare is it to see an acting hot streak in the limited series categories, but we kind of, sort of, have one! Regina King has won two of the last three trophies for Best Actress in a Limited Series, after pulling off the upset in 2018 to win for “Seven Seconds” and then rolling to a well-deserved win for “Watchmen” in 2020. And if you extend the streak beyond Best Actress to Best Supporting Actress, then King has won in four of the last six years. (She took home the Emmy for “American Crime” in 2015 and 2016.) And her hot streak could continue if she’s nominated for hosting “SNL” this year, though not in the Limited Series section.
Fun Fact: A comedy has not been nominated in this category since 2014, when TV Academy voters saw fit to nominate Kristen Wiig...

Collecting her second Emmy on Sunday night, Maya Rudolph not only became the first person in 20 years to win twice consecutively in the same category, twice–she won her second consecutive Emmy for her Big Mouth voice role, and another second consecutive Emmy for guesting on SNL—but she also became the third Black woman ever to win back-to back Emmys. Picking up the gold for Comedy Guest Actress for hosting Saturday Night Live, Rudolph was thrilled to learn of the latter achievement backstage.
“Wow that’s amazing,’ she told reporters. “I feel honored to be part of something like that. I feel like this Emmy is very fitting in that it’s for something that feels like such a personal achievement. It’s for hosting my childhood love and dream and at a place in my life I finally realized it’s what I do best, and what makes me happiest when I perform.

Maya Rudolph has picked up a second consecutive guest comedy actress Emmy for “Saturday Night Live,” just hours after she picked up her second consecutive character voice-over performance Emmy.
With these wins, Rudolph also becomes only the second woman of color and the fourth person of color overall to pick up back-to-back acting wins in the same category from the Television Academy. Bill Cosby was the first to achieve this, with consecutive lead drama actor wins for “I Spy” in 1966, 1967 and 1968. Charles S. Dutton became the second, winning a guest drama actor statue in 2002 for “The Practice” and then the same race in 2003 for “Without A Trace.” Regina King was the first woman to do this, winning the supporting limited series/TV movie actress race first in 2015 and then again in 2016, both times for “American Crime.”

Half a decade has passed since Lin-Manuel Miranda finished his Broadway run as the star of “Hamilton,” but the adulation for his work just keeps coming. The Tony-winning smash, which Miranda also wrote, experienced a surge in popularity after a filmed version featuring the entire original cast premiered on Disney+ last July. Miranda and six of his castmates have been recognized for their acting, which makes most of them part of an exclusive group of performers who have earned Tony and Emmy bids for the same role.
Just as they did at the 2016 Tonys, leading men Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr. face each other directly in this year’s Best Movie/Limited Actor Emmy race. Nominated for their supporting turns are Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jonathan Groff, Anthony Ramos, and Phillipa Soo. Ramos is the only one to have not originally competed at the Tonys, as that slot was instead filled by Christopher Jackson.

It’s been so long since FX’s American Crime Story debuted (Obama was still president!) that it’s easy to forget how much trepidation surrounded that first season, The People v. O.J. Simpson. The O.J. trial was a circus at the time it unfolded. Producer Ryan Murphy’s track record seemed even more fragile in 2016 than it does now, circa the death rattle of Glee and misfires like Scream Queens. And the casting felt odd in so many places: David Schwimmer as Kim Kardashian’s dad? John Travolta...

TV docudramas always walk a fine line between illumination and exploitation. But American Crime Story‘s first installment, The People v. O.J. Simpson, broke the mold by doing the impossible: It gave us a fresh perspective on a story we thought we already knew so well. It had depth, it had nuance, it made us rethink the legacies of infamous media pariahs… and I say all that to emphasize that Impeachment: American Crime Story does none of this.
Despite its lofty pedigree, Impeachment is a disaster: a schlocky, overheated melodrama that’s only a degree or two removed from a Saturday Night Live parody.

“Impeachment: American Crime Story” is empty. Season 3 of FX’s anthology series, following 2016’s lauded debut “The People vs. O.J. Simpson” and 2018’s divisive follow-up “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” is stark in its tomb-like depiction of Washington D.C., from the desolate corridors of the White House to a lonely residence at the Watergate. But the series, which dramatizes the investigation into Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky in the lead up to his impeachment, is also obsessed with its own recreation; tawdry character reveals and nostalgia traps overwhelm the exigent reframing of a well-known story, now seen (in part) from the victim’s point of view. Better appreciating America’s past abuses of power — by the president, by the media, by anyone who can benefit from punching down — is a compelling ambition, but “Impeachment” is far more beguiled by the trappings of history than excavating telling angles for today.

Chernin Entertainment has expanded its executive leadership with three key hires: NBCUniversal veteran Bill McGoldrick, Starz exec Juan Alfonso , and Fox 21 legal pro Vibiana Molina.
McGoldrick has been named executive vice president of film and television, with Alfonso serving as senior vice president over those two portfolios. Last Year’s Winner: Uzo Aduba, “Mrs. America”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: The same actor hasn’t repeated in this category since Regina King took home back-to-back trophies for “American Crime” in 2015 and 2016 — which is the only time anyone has garnered consecutive wins in a category not exactly conducive to repetition — but nominees from streaming series have won the last three years running.
Fun Fact: As is the case surprisingly often with the Emmys, the actor with the most nominations in category history is not among the most awarded winners. Kathy Bates has seven nominations here
Notable Ineligible Series: “American Crime Story: Impeachment” (the season did not air in time to be eligible); “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” (submitted as a Drama Series)
At the bottom of this page are IndieWire Deputy TV Editor Ben Travers’ predictions for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or TV Movie.

On Friday, Aug. 13, FX announced that the critically acclaimed TV producer and his producing partner Brad Falchuk will be expanding their empire at the network with two new anthology shows, American Love Story and American Sports Story. And, much like its predecessor American Crime Story, the spinoffs will dive into prominent, real-life moments that shaped the cultural landscape. For starters, season one of American Love Story is said to depict John F. Kennedy Jr.'s headline-making courtship with Carolyn Bessette. "What started out as a beautiful union for the young couple, widely regarded as American royalty, began to fray under the stress of...
