The Charlize Theron action film The Old Guard was a hit for the Netflix streaming service when it was released in 2020. Directed by Roar Uthaug, the Norwegian creature feature Troll was another success for Netflix when it was released in December 2022. Both of those movies are now getting sequels that are expected to reach Netflix by the end of 2025, when The Old Guard 2 heading for a July 2nd release and Troll 2 not yet having a release date – and Netflix decided to start building the hype for both of them today, releasing a clip from Troll 2 that can be seen in the embed above and a behind-the-scenes look at the stunts of The Old Guard 2, which can be found at the bottom of this article.

Netflix's La Palma includes a great cast of both seasoned and new actors. Directed by Kasper Barfoed, the non-English language Netflix original series follows a group of characters on the westernmost island in the Canary Islands called La Palma as they are faced with a dangerous ecological crisis. The series' combination of familial loyalty, great visual effects, and an engaging storyline has made it a hit on the streaming platform.
Although several movies and TV shows depict natural disasters, there is something unique about La Palma. The series is intriguing from its very first episode and gets better as more information is revealed. The Netflix miniseries’ cast members all give an outstanding performance and perfectly portray the fear that comes with knowing that the world might be coming to an end.

Thanks to Eli Roth and Thanksgiving, nearly every holiday has a horror film now. Halloween is covered and Christmas has Black Christmas and killer Santa's galore. There are horror movies for New Year's Day, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, April Fool's Day, and the Fourth of July. All we're really missing now is a messed-up creature feature with a killer Easter bunny. Forget having one day. There's another horror movie out there, one so good that it became a franchise, which doesn't celebrate a holiday but an entire season. In 2006, the Norwegian slasher Cold Prey introduced us to a new villain called the Mountain Man. Imagine a giant Michael Myers in a ski mask and parka, and you're on the right track. Cold Prey is a slow burn that will warm you up, and it has some of the most beautiful cinematography you'll ever see in a stalk-and-slash film, even...

As temperatures plummet and blankets of snow envelop the landscape, winter horror movies become the perfect escape for those seeking thrills intertwined with the frosty air. Within this chilly realm, we find a particular sub-genre that harmonizes the starkness of winter with the dread of the cold-blooded killer – figures defined by their emotionless, relentless pursuit of victims, often leaving a trail as chilling as the season itself. These ruthless antagonists embody the essence of winter horror movies, their actions mirroring the merciless bite of the colder months.
From snowy suspense to icy massacres, let’s explore the top films where the winter season and heartless homicidal villains provide a double dose of fright.

This holiday season’s release of Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving is cause for celebration amongst slasher fans. It’s been a hot minute since mainstream horror audiences have been able to watch a wide-release slasher that feels gruesomely throwback *and* is based on a wholly original concept. Thanksgiving is a contemporary reinterpretation of cheesy 80s midnighters about masked killers and juicy, rubbery effects that hoists holiday horror back into the limelight. It’s also fair to speculate how Thanksgiving signals a possible shift in overall genre trends, but labeling Thanksgiving as the rebirth of the slasher subgenre is a bit misleading. Roth’s ooey-gooey ode to holiday horror with all the trimmings certainly sticks out in today’s horror landscape, but that’s only on surface-level evaluations.
Heck, it wasn’t even the only holiday-themed slasher in theaters this season.

Directed by Roar Uthaug, the Norwegian creature feature Troll was released through the Netflix streaming service last December – and it performed so well for the streamer, Variety reports that Netflix has now ordered a sequel! Troll 2 will see Uthaug reteaming with writer Espen Aukan and producers Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud of Motion Blur.
We don’t have any plot information for Troll 2 just yet, but Troll had the following synopsis: Deep inside the mountain of Dovre, something gigantic awakens after being trapped for a thousand years. Destroying everything in its path, the creature is fast approaching the capital of Norway. But how do you stop something you thought only existed in Norwegian folklore?
It’s interesting to note that, while several of Uthaug’s movies have received sequels, he hasn’t directed any of them. The Cold Prey follow-ups, the sequel to his fantasy film Magic Silver,...

Marie Wilmann, Kim Falck, Mads Sjøgård Pettersen, and Gard Eidsvold star in the first film.

The characters in the Norwegian slasher franchise Cold Prey may be accustomed to harsh and wintry climates, but they’re not prepared for a pickaxe-wielding killer with almost superhuman stamina. The first stab in this successful trilogy made its way into theaters in 2006, on a Friday the 13th, no less. Five characters go on a ski trip in Jotunheimen, and when someone gets injured, they find shelter at the abandoned ski lodge on the mountain. As they wait for help to come, the group slowly realizes the place isn’t so empty after all. A serial killer inhabits the old hotel with a long and dark history. This ruthless and stoic assailant, referred to as the Mountain Man, then proceeds to butcher his unwelcome guests.
Slasher movies are typically associated with hot weather. Thoughts of summer camps, sweaty small towns, and warm woods enter one’s head when talking about this popular subgenre.

In recent years Norway has been cranking out some fantastic genre films – Troll Hunter, Dead Snow and its sequel, Rare Exports, Thale and the Cold Prey series. Speaking of the latter, director Roar Uthaug, the man behind the three Cold Prey movies, turned his hand from the horrors of the slasher movie to the horrors of nature with The Wave, a disaster movie of real-life proportions – which screened back in February 2016 at Glasgow Frightfest and was followed by a home entertainment release, here in the UK, in August of the same year.
Well now comes The Quake, a follow-up to that film which sees The Wave star Kristoffer Joner return as geologist Kristian Eikjord, this time under the direction of John Andreas Andersen, who worked as a cinematographer on such films as King of Devil’s Island and the Jo Nesbo adaptation Headhunters.
In 1904 an earthquake with a 5.4 magnitude on the Richter scale shook Oslo.

Tomb Raider is slated to come out on March 16th, 2018 from Warner Bros. Pictures. This will mark the third film adaptation of the Tomb Raider video game franchise, following 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life, both of which starred Angelina Jolie as the title character. Before Roar Uthaug (director of the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot) introduced moviegoers to a towering force of nature in The Wave, he took viewers on a deadly snowboarding vacation in the 2006 slasher film Cold Prey (aka Fritt Vilt), and a remake of the Norwegian film is now in development at WWE Studios.
Deadline reports that WWE Studios has picked up rights to remake Cold Prey, with Casey La Scala (The Remaining) penning the screenplay.
No casting details are known at this time, but it wouldn’t be surprising if we saw a wrestler cross over to star in the remake à la Glenn “Kane” Jacobs in WWE’s See No Evil movies.
The original Cold Prey followed a group of snowboarders who sought refuge at an abandoned hotel, and instead found someone sinister waiting for them… The horror film spawned a sequel in 2008 and a prequel in 2010.

Director: Pål Øie. Writers: Kjersti Helen Rasmussen and Pål Øie. Cast: Anders Baasmo Christiansen, Baard Owe, Mads Sjøgård Pettersen and Ellen Dorrit Petersen. Norway continues to develop a frightening horror scene. From the Fritt Vilt slasher series to Død snø (2009), this cold country has lots of scary tales to tell. The latest is titled Villmark 2. Shot twelve years after the first film, this time a crew of workers are tasked with identifying toxic materials in an ancient asylum. Very reminiscent of Session 9 (2001) and definitely an homage, Villmark 2 is very slow in its build up of tension. However, into the third act, events take a brutal turn as the film's World War II mythology comes to the forefront. Sound design and production values are high. But, Villmark 2 fails to find its own original story and direction, which makes a viewing of this film very predictable and slightly unexciting.

Norwegian director Roar Uthaug is preparing Scandinavia’s first disaster movie, The Wave (Bølgen).
The film, budgeted at $7.9m (NOK50m), will depict a tsunami that is predicted to hit Norway at some point in the future.
There was a previous instance in 1934 when 2 million cubic metres of rock fell into Norway’s Tafiord, triggering a 85-metre wave, which left 40 people dead.
Currently, a 700-metre crevice in the Åkneset Fjell, aka the Fjell of Death, expands by 10-15cm annually. This will eventually result in a rockslide, creating a tsunami in the fjord and destroying everything in its path before it reaches land in Geiranger.
“I have been fascinated by this event since I first heard about it six or seven years ago,” said Norwegian producer Martin Sundland, of Fantefilm Fiksjon, which is making feature currently in post-production.
“It is scary that there is such a place in Norway where disaster will unavoidably happen again.”

With Halloween on the horizon, it’s the time of year for Hollywood horrors. Films that get all of the limelight, and usually all of the critics and acclaim. Yet are they worth our time?
In recent years we have been introduced to a couple of excellent horror films in terms of Insidious, and Paranormal Activity. The latter, however, in striving to build up a franchise has struggled intensely to deliver what the first film did so well. After you have seen the first one, you know what to expect. Yet still, people buy into it, and forget or ignore films that may be worth more of their attention.
This may suggest that the horror flicks that only make it to a select few screens, or in most cases, straight to dvd, are not worth giving your time of day to. This is where you would be wrong. Having spent...

This may suggest that the horror flicks that only make it to a select few screens, or in most cases, straight to dvd, are not worth giving your time of day to. This is where you would be wrong. Having spent...

I’ve probably said this (literally) 50 times, and I’m more than happy to say it again: If you haven’t seen the first few Cold Prey (Fritt Vilt) flicks, you’re missing something special. This young franchise equates to little more than a modern day Friday the 13th/Halloween hybrid, on ice. But the first two pictures are absolutely gorgeous, and shot with a refined hand and passion bestowed; it’s really an eye opening pair of flicks that may make you miss well assembled slasher pieces.

I am a traditionalist. A sentimental sort, even. I love my cold weather, and I love my winter horror. The snowier, the better. So while my neck of the woods is finally coming out of the grip of an unseasonably tepid start to the season, awash in brown grass, dismal mud holes, and dead trees, I must take refuge in the cinematic snowstorms of yesteryear to get my winter fix. Who’s comin’ with me? Dress warm, bring an extra blanket & maybe a thermos full of hot cocoa, and don’t forget a dry change of socks… here are my top six (well, sorta) destination spots for sub-zero nights of snow-bound terror…

Ok, to be fair, this film reeks of cheap incompetency from start to finish. It’s an underwhelming stalkfest with uneven music, obnoxious puffy characters with blow-dried hair who get drunk and shriek at each other contemptibly,...

Kristian Eivind Espedal, better known to black metal fans as Gaahl, has a legendary (and more than a little scary) reputation in the music world. His larger-than-life persona will really come into play when he steps in front of the camera for Escape, a gritty new Medieval thriller from director Roar Uthaug – whose snowbound slasher Cold Prey (Fritt Vilt) became a sleeper hit in 2007 and spawned two sequels. The first news about Gaahl's role in Escape came out this week, and we've got more details below, so hit the jump and read on... We recently reported on Gaahl's eerie dark ambient project Wardruna, whose songs are based on ancient Norse mythology and musical traditions. But Gaahl's bloodiest mark in the...

[Updated with new teaser image.]In the words of star Ingrid Bolso Berdal, "There will be crossbows. And leather outfits."When director Roar Uthaug and the team at Norway's Fante Film last collaborated on a feature the result was Cold Prey (Fritt Vilt), the picture largely responsible for kicking the current wave of Nordic genre film into high gear. And now the gang is back together for Flukt (Escape). An action picture set in the remote Norwegian countryside during the 1300's, with the nation in the grips of the Black Death, Berdal will be playing the leader of a group of outlaws living in the mountains. And given the title of the picture I think it's safe to assume that someone's after her.In production now with an October...

In late 2007, I caught a Norwegian slash flick called Fritt Vilt (that's Cold Prey) and here's what I said in my review: "You've seen this movie many (many) times before, but there's always room for another solid slasher flick, particularly one that's clearly made with some real care and craftsmanship." Then in early 2009 I sat down with Cold Prey 2, and my review offered this bit of enthusiasm: "No snark, no irony, just a whip-nasty, well-shot, tightly-cut slasher movie with a bad attitude, a very slick style, and only the slightest of smirks on its face." And now, in April of 2011, I'm here to share with you a thought or two on the inevitable Cold Prey 3, and the first one is...

Scandinavian horror is on the rise. It's not booming or taking over the world like the French managed a couple of years ago, still some very solid genre outings are coming from this relatively small cinematic region. Kollegiet (retitled Room 205 in the West) will probably not turn too many heads, but should you take the time to watch it you might be pleasantly surprised with the things Barnewitz puts on offer. It's clear Norway isn't going to revolutionize the horror genre. They are mostly copying existing sub genres, seasoning them with a dash of Danish goodness. The Fritt Vilt series provided some quality slasher films, Kollegiet is a strong continuation of the Asian suspense wave. The influences are more than obvious, Barnewitz never even...

Hansel and Gretel have their first menacing witch to deal with as Ingrid Bolsø Berdal signs up to be part of the cast. She'll be acting alongside Jeremy Renner, Famke Janssen and Gemma Arterton in "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters," directed by Tommy Wirkola. The character is said to be a "hardcore killing machine" which sounds like a suitable opponent for the siblings. The upcoming 3D film is centered around the two fairy tale siblings, now adults and ready to exterminate any witches that may be a threat. Paramount's new film will begin shooting later on in the spring in order to read the March 2nd, 2012 release date.Ingrid is best known for her acting roles in "Fritt Vilt" ("Cold Prey") and "De Gales hus" ("House of Fools").Source: Bloody Disgusting...

Well, we have taken a look at the "Best of" on the domestic circuit, in relation to indie films. Now, let us go global to track down the best in international horror. This is a year where the vile was unleashed with the Human Centipede to the action oriented zombie film the Devil's Playground. This reviewer admits a weakness in the areas of Asian and Italian films, from abroad. If it is not Takashi Miike, then this movie lover has likely not heard of it. Giallo is another film genre that does not appeal here.

Fritt Vilt 3 Alt' PosterOkay, this is ridiculous; the excellent Fritt Vilt serial killer series is in to its second sequel and yet this latest film has not been picked up for Us distribution. A bold distributor like Maverick Entertainment, First Look Studios, or Camelot Entertainment Group need to take as much notice of this brutal series, just as fans have. In the meantime, more promotional material is materializing on this original, exceptional and gripping horror series.

When Roar Uthaug's Cold Prey (Fritt Vilt) hit Norwegian cinema screens in 2006 it came as something as a risk. As the first true slasher film to emerge from the area nobody knew how audiences would respond to its story of a group of college kids being hunted by a mysterious killer in a remote, abandoned hotel. Luckily for them the film became a huge hit and, in retrospect, now stands as the trigger event for the current wave of Nordic genre film.
Cold Prey quickly spawned a sequel that followed directly on the events of the first picture and later this year - in mid October - a third entry in the series will arrive on Norwegian screens. This latest effort is a prequel picture, the story of what created the killer in the first place.

Mikkel Braenne Sandemose is helming the prequel from a script by Peder Fuglerud and Lars Gudmestad. It's hard to over state the importance of Roar Uthaug's Fritt Vilt (Cold Prey) to the current wave of Nordic genre film. The first ever slasher movie to come out of the region Uthaug's picture was a huge success, proving to producers and financiers that their audiences were hungry for something other than just arthouse fare and so the door opened wide for a string of quality genre pictures from the region in the years that followed.
And among those pictures - of course - was a sequel to Uthaug's trailer blazer. Less successful critically but still a big hit at the box office, Fritt Vilt 2 carried on the franchise with a new director at the helm but continuing the story from exactly where the first left off. And now they're back for more. Or are they?
More would imply a continuation but it appears that they're content to...

With filming well underway a first teaser poster and trailer have arrived on the flicks newly live official site, and my they are teasing. I would like you to ask yourself two questions. First, if you are the director of the first slasher in Norway's history, a film that became a huge financial success and helped spark a surge of genre pictures out of the Nordic region, what do you do next? And second, what movie somehow managed to beat out the behemoth that is 2012 on opening weekend in Norway. The answer to both questions is the same and it is surprising.
The director is Roar Uthaug, a man who - for very good reason - was in very high demand after the success of Fritt Vilt (or Cold Prey), fielding lucrative offers from around the globe. But he didn't want to make any of those films. And he didn't want to follow up Cold Prey with another horror picture, either. No, what Uthaug was stay at home and make something family-friendly with his wife.

It’s nice to see that even foreign filmgoers have to contend with sequel-itis. 2006’s ‘Cold Prey’ (’Fritt Vilt’) was a fairly standard slasher movie structure-wise. A group of snowboarders must take refuge in an abandoned hotel. Killer resident of said hotel takes them out one-by-one. But there was a style and a level of depth to ‘Cold Prey,’ something that is missing for the majority of its sequel. ’Cold Prey II,’ much like its predecessor, is a fairly standard slasher movie, too. Its setting has changed, there is a little more backstory to the killer involved, the body count is higher, and the characters being picked off are paper thin. You know, your basic rules of a slasher movie sequel.

You’ll have to chalk this one up as kind of unconfirmed for now because despite my best intentions I can find no other mention of this happening officially. 24FramesPerSecond is reporting that there will be a third installment of the Norwegian slasher films Fritt Vilt, otherwise known to us English speaking folks, Cold Prey. I had a bit of trouble with this report because 24Fps is not citing any sources. They do say that director Mikkel Sandemose is slated to helm the pic so I checked out his Twitter and there was this message from June, translated from Norwegian by Google, soooooo… “Packages UK with winter clothes and wellies for a new round of FV3 locations. Norway can offer most of the wind and weather, also in June.” Something like that. So he’s been out and about finding locations for the next film.

Who says you can keep a good horror franchise down!? The hugely enjoyable Norwegian slasher Fritt Vilt (aka Cold Prey) is set to get a third instalment. While it’s very early days for much info for the production, we have learned that the film will be a prequel to the bloody events in the first two movies, and is to be directed by Mikkel Brænne Sandemose. Shooting is tipped to start this September, with an eye to release in October 2010. More, as we get it.
