Any Trading Spaces aficionado will tell you the hit TLC show, which aired from 2000 to 2008, was just as much about the rotating cast of designers’ big personalities as it was about redecorating on a budget.
On Wednesday, TLC announced the lineup for the show’s forthcoming reboot after a 10-year hiatus, and almost every fan favorite from the original series is making a return. Joining host Paige Davis, who signed on in July, will be Doug Wilson, Genevieve Gorder, Hildi Santo-Tomas, Vern Yip, Frank Bielic, and Laurie Smith. Beloved carpenters Ty Pennington and Carter Oosterhouse will also be back.

Don’t cry because this season of Fixer Upper is over; smile because you can relive all its best moments right here.
The fourth round of the wildly popular series promised to be as full of Chip’s jokes, Joanna’s shiplap style and even more #couplesgoals cuteness as the three previous. And between the sweet family stories, unbelievable reveals and exciting updates (hint: they’re getting a new show!), the Hgtv hit did not disappoint. But if you need a Chip and Jo fix to hold you over until season five, here’s a collection of this season favorite moments.

As if your dog didn’t already run the house. Animal Planet has ordered new series “Animal House,” TheWrap has learned, which will follow Hgtv Design Star winner Antonio Ballatore — and his pooch Chewie, of course. The new show will see Ballatore (pictured above), his project manager Grace, and a team of designers “convert drab spaces into dream living arrangements for homeowners and their pets,” per the cable channel. “Animal House” (working title) is set to premiere in the third quarter of 2017 Also Read: 'The Vet Life' Renewed by Animal Planet for Season 2 - Watch a Teaser (Exclusive) Each week,...

Vern Yip confirmed to Access Atlanta that Hgtv has cancelled Hgtv Design Star. Yip said ratings were still good, so I’m guessing a bigger issue is that later seasons of the show never found a designer who matched the impact of David Bromstad.
Matt Smith says he’s already asking when Doctor Who will do a story featuring multiple Doctors, so he can return to the series. As long as they manage to keep these meetings of the Doctors from feeling commonplace, I’m all for it.
The Daily Beast declares that last week’s Modern Family wedding was a “landmark moment for marriage equality” for a variety of reasons. That includes Modern Family position as a mainstream hit, the fact that their wedding was a special episode but not a “very special” episode and that the couple involved were a regular characters with a prominent role every week.

We’re down to the final three, and this week, Britany, Hilari and Danielle meet up with mentor David Bromstad in a field, where’s he’s surrounded by yurts. David explains that in keeping with the Hgtv Design Star tradition of decorating untraditional spaces, (glass homes and tiny houses), the final three will design for a yurt. David explains that yurts are portable structure with round walls built on a wood lattice frame. They are originally from Asia and have been used for centuries.
The challenge is to turn their yurts into fantasy bedroom suites. They’ll have two days to complete the challenge, and they’ll have the help of some of Hgtv and Diy’s best known carpenters. Danielle is assigned Chip Wade, who I know from Curb Appeal the Block, but who apparently has his own show, Elbow Room. Britany will work with the “star carpenter” of Design on a Dime,...

Tonight’s episode of Hgtv Design Star finds the six remaining contestants battling to win a feature in an upcoming issue of the recently launched Hgtv Magazine. Synergy at its best! There was a moment toward the end of Hgtv Design Star‘s Season 6 finale where I had a brief fantasy that the judges panel would get inspired by the recently concluded Glee Project and declare multiple winners. Imagine if they greenlit a show in which Karl conceived sophisticated rooms with daring paint choices, Meg picked out jaunty accessories and explained all of Karl’s various design techniques in her gravelly-perky fashion, and last week’s evictee Mark and His Biceps of Doom built small installations while working up a meaningful sweat. That’s worthy of a series recording slot on my DVR.

Team Gay's Karl Sponholtz is so close to being the next Hgtv Design Star he can smell it – and he got a good whiff of first season winner David Bromstad along the way, too.
"David smells amazing," Sponholtz said about the reality competition show's official mentor. "He loves to hug, and he smells really good when he's doing it."
Sponholtz, a Chicago-based designer for an architecture firm and freelance interior designer, didn't expect to find himself in the final two. Nonetheless, tonight he'll square off against fellow Chicagoan Meg Caswell for the Season Six crown in front of judges Vern Yip, Genevieve Gorder, and design queen Candice Olson.
"Like most people in this field, I was a victim of the recession," Sponholtz told AfterElton.com, "I had a lot of time on my hands, so I dropped off my application on the way to a party. I didn't...

I wondered for a hot second if this week’s episode of Hgtv Design Star would end in a Gladiator-style duel to the death. After all, returning judge Candice Olson (who’s been sorely missed all these weeks) seemed to be setting up a swords-and-sandals scenario when she asked our two finalists to turn toward each other, then declared the only thing standing between them and their own TV show was the person standing in front of ‘em.

We’re down to the final three contestants on Season 6 of Hgtv Design Star, and trying to decide who I want to win feels akin to staring at three paint chips — “Buttercream,” “Newborn Chick,” and “Lemon Drop” — and thinking, “I guess pretty much any of these would work.” Monday night’s episode found us saying goodbye to Kellie, who lost her mojo on a live episode of The Nate Berkus Show, but whose bigger crime was turning a set of rag rugs into poorly constructed barstool covers. I didn’t get why the judges praised the seats — “it’s a really great color story,...

Drama 1, Design 0. That was the depressing score at the end of Monday night’s episode of Hgtv Design Star, and the worst part was watching the judges pull shenanigans to try to justify their decisions.
Don’t get me wrong, Tyler’s “batik” wall was a mini-disaster in a challenge where teams of two had to transform a white box into one of four layouts (galley, L-shape, U-shape, and peninsula) and one of four styles (farmhouse, industrial, contemporary, and global). Hgtv Design Star took a road trip to the Jersey Shore this week, but I’m pleased to report no hot tubs were befouled as the nine remaining contestants joined forces to renovate four bedrooms at a violently outdated bed and breakfast. In fact, the only part of the telecast that left me deeply disconcerted — aside from the ’80s leather sectional sofa in Meg, Mark, and Karl’s “before” room — was the presence of guest judge Kathy Ireland, who debuted a brand new language known as Cuecardanese.

When a reality-show contestant kicks off an episode with a grandiose declaration, you know he’s getting set up to experience either the thrill of victory, or the agony of defeat. On this week’s Hgtv Design Star, said contestant was Doug, who announced that he was going to make a “huge attempt” to let his design be the “hero” of the show. Unfortunately, the crusader in question arrived on the scene wearing a cape of hideous paint and wielding an arsenal of mismatched home furnishings, and thus wound up as the latest victim of the worst sendoff line of...

If you're like me, Hgtv Design Star managed to sneak up on you recently, and that's because you don't actually watch a whole lot of Hgtv. Hgtv Design Star brought back its iconic white-box challenge for Monday night’s episode, and while a few contestants filled their blank-canvases with dazzling colors, funky textures, and outrageous furnishings, others collapsed under the hefty freedom of being able to work with no boundaries.
Okay, maybe “no boundaries” isn’t the right term. For one thing, it conjures up memories of the lamest American Idol victory anthem in the show’s 10-season history. And secondly, the designers did, in fact, have to work with a few ground rules: They were allowed to use as much — or as little — of the...

David Bromstad is Hgtv's darling. After the nervous but extremely talented interior decorator won Hgtv Design Star in 2006, Bromstad learned to be comfortable in front of the camera. And now he's everywhere. From hosting his own series Color Splash to co-hosting duties on the new show Hgtv'd to appearances on specials like Hgtv Dream Home Giveaway and Bang for Your Buck, Bromstad has put his stamp on the network. And now he's returning to his roots as the Tim Gunn-Style mentor on Design Star.

If you follow me at all, you probably know that I am something of a nut for reality competition shows. "Nut," because they have some appeal to me, regardless of what the particular subject is and/or whether or not it is anything I would watch a "regular" show about.
I have no real interest in becoming a chef, and don't watch cooking shows, but I watch all the various shows that put chefs in competition with each other. Likewise, I have little interest in fashion, interior design, or the cutting of hair, but most of these will get me to watch the reality shows.

Hgtv's breakout hit reality series, 'Design Star,' is getting back into an Empire state of mind.
The fifth season of the show returns to its original location, New York. But that's not the only change in store, according to judge Genevieve Gorder, who spoke to TV Squad by phone yesterday.
Gorder and fellow judges Vern Yip and Candice Olsen take on hosting duties from Clive Pearse. They get more involved in creating the challenges, following the contestants' work from start to finish and mentoring them throughout the entire design process.
A fabulous season is in store for viewers, one that was "a lot more fun," Gorder said.
Check out what else she had to say about 'Hgtv Design Star.'

No surprise as set designer Antonio Ballatore, dubbed the "bad boy of design" by series judge Candice Olson, took the victory in last night's finale of Hgtv Design Star. A native New Yorker who is now based in Los Angeles, Antonio bested Dan Vickery, the designer from Portland, Oregon in the hardest challenge ever tackled in four seasons of the series -- where each finalist had to makeover an entire home, completing multiple rooms in just 44 hours. Set in Hollywood, the 4th season of Hgtv Design Star has performed well in ratings all season. Ballatore, 40, is a Below the Liner (crew) making his way in Los Angeles, and he has been crowned the season four champion.
