"The Electric State" has generated nothing but trouble for Netflix.
The streamer spent a whopping $320 million on the film –- which boasts the expensive but wasted talents of Chris Pratt, Millie Bobby Brown, Stanley Tucci, and the blockbuster titans Joe and Anthony Russo –- only for it to debut as an almost immediate viewership flop on Netflix. This was no doubt due to the poor reviews it received upon release (sharing little in common with its lauded source material), as even the platform's own subscribers had already seemingly passed on it in favor of a little-known natural disaster documentary.
But if tornadoes aren't your thing -– and you're not looking to get involved with an overlooked sci-fi series like "Tales from the Loop" –- we've found loads of films currently available to stream or rent online that offer more compelling stories, more impressive visuals, and more human performances than "The Electric State" has to offer.

The road to Oscars glory runs through the Griffin family — or it walks Chris Griffin on a leash.
Immediately following Anora star Mikey Madison’s win in the Best Actress category at the 97th Academy Awards this past weekend, a massive backlash movement sprung up on Twitter to protest the success of the comedy/romance movie about a sex worker and her rich Russian husband while criticizing Hollywood’s obsession with the “sex sells” principle. According to a growing number of incensed film buffs, every single actress who has ever won an Oscar has, at some point, played a sex worker on a screen big or small, and interest in the theory has driven attention and traffic toward the derogatorily titled website that originated the rumor, OscarHookers.com, on which the unnamed author figuratively stamps a scarlet A on one entry from every such celebrated artist’s IMDb page.

Ryan Gosling has charmed audiences for years with his dreamy looks and versatile talent, making him a favorite in both indie gems and Hollywood blockbusters. From romantic leads to brooding anti-heroes, Gosling has proven time and again that there’s no role he can’t ace. But even for an actor as accomplished as him, not every project fits into his busy schedule.

While he’s delivered iconic performances in many unforgettable films, there have been times when Gosling had to pass on roles that might have suited him perfectly. It’s hard to imagine what could’ve been, but it’s fun to wonder how different some movies might have turned out with him as the lead. So here’s a look at five films Ryan Gosling turned down, decisions he may have second-guessed later!

Movie stardom is incredibly difficult to achieve, and even more difficult to maintain. Once an actor finds that breakthrough role, they're immediately faced with the challenge of giving their fans what they want while also, depending on their level of ambition, taking on roles that will hopefully expand their range (or at the very least keep them from getting stuck in a creative rut). Some actors correctly identify that their audience isn't looking for much in the way of variance (John Wayne is a perfect example of this), while others are determined to throw a curveball here and there (as Sylvester Stallone's unwisely did with poorly received comedies like "Rhinestone" and "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot"). Mess with expectations too much, and the fans will stop trusting you to deliver.
Wayne and Stallone at least had a go-to mode of movie they could return to as needed to satisfy their audiences.

Glen Powell has shut down recent suggestions that his universal appeal is greater than that of another Hollywood star: Ryan Gosling. While the actor has emerged as the go-to guy for movie projects lately, with some making comparisons between Powell and his Top Gun: Maverick co-star Tom Cruise as a man who can make the box office sizzle by his name alone, the actor isn't about to get big-headed about it. So when an unnamed producer suggested that Powell has more universal appeal than Gosling, and indicated that the latter only appeals to women, Powell took to social media to shut that down politely.
All of this started when the producer made a note that Powell had officially arrived as a movie star, saying, "Audiences now go to movies to see him," but wrapped that up with a bit of shade towards Gosling when they added, "Unlike an actor like...

Put down that notebook, grab your tap-dancing shoes, and saddle up because we're about to break down why one of Hollywood's most prominent leading men is more than Kenough.
In his thirty years as an actor, Ryan Gosling has amassed a total of 107 award nominations and 40 wins. No small feat, considering he's been known to take multiple years-long breaks in his line of work.
Having cemented a career with roles ranging from comedy to thriller to action, Gosling is not one to limit himself. As Roger Ebert said, Ryan "proves he's one of the finest actors in contemporary movies."
Starting at a young age, Gosling managed to sidestep the drama that has plagued many notable child stars in Hollywood's history.
The actor likely saw the downfall of fellow industry peers and prioritized his mental health to avoid such pitfalls.
Whatever the case, Ryan has also made a name for himself...

Ryan Gosling's shift to lighter roles stemmed from family priorities, avoiding dark characters for better mental health. La La Land marked the turning point for Gosling, as he embraced more inspiring and mainstream film projects. The Fall Guy aligns with Gosling's current priorities, offering a mix of comedy and action without bringing darkness home.
Given his recent movie choices, it might be hard to remember, but Ryan Gosling used to dabble in very dark and brooding roles primarily. From playing a neo-Nazi in 2001's The Believer, to playing a serial killer in training in 2002's Murder By Numbers, to playing a man in a marriage that is tragically dissolving in 2010's Blue Valentine, Gosling was never afraid to tap into very serious and complex emotions. Ryan Gosling is living his best life these days. Or certainly his funniest. After earning an Academy Award nomination purely based on his ability to persuasively turn “Kenergy” into a noun in last summer’s Barbie, he brought that pure, uncut Ken stuff to the Oscar stage. No, not by winning the prize, but by taking home the hearts and minds of the internet with an epic performance of “I’m Just Ken.”
In hindsight, the spectacle of it all might be viewed as a turning point in his career as audiences embrace the guy who seemed so stoic and tortured in the 2010s—with his understated leading roles in Drive, Blade Runner 2049, Blue Valentine, and First Man—as actually a great comedy talent. His next studio vehicle, The Fall Guy, is in theaters now, and we can vouch for it being a breezy, lighthearted entertainment given life by...

Ryan Gosling's hot streak faces a challenge with The Gray Man 2. The project is a sequel to his first movie since 2017 to receive a low Rotten Tomatoes score. Netflix's promise to focus on quality over quantity with their tentpole franchises could potentially benefit The Gray Man 2.
One upcoming Netflix project threatens to detail a hot streak for Ryan Gosling. The star began his career as a child actor in projects predominantly on television including The Mickey Mouse Club, Young Hercules, and Are You Afraid of the Dark?, but quickly transitioned into more adult roles in the mid-2000s. Early Ryan Gosling movies in this vein include The Notebook and Lars and the Real Girl. Since transitioning to adult roles, he has gone on to earn three Oscar nominations, for playing Dan Dunne in 2006's Half Nelson, Sebastian in 2016's La La Land, and Ken in 2023's Barbie.

Anything can happen on live television, and this can sometimes be evident when cast members break character during televised Saturday Night Live sketches. The latest example of this comes from Saturday night's new episode hosted by Barbie star Ryan Gosling, who transformed into another iconic blonde character for the skit.
The sketch was set up as a television segment with talking heads discussing the implications of artificial intelligence. Seated behind Heidi Gardner's character was Gosling dressed up to look exactly like Beavis from Beavis and Butt-Head, complete with the curly blonde hair wig. However, the joke is that Gosling is not Beavis, but someone who happens to look exactly like the character without being aware of it. This distracts Kenan Thompson's character from trying to speak seriously about AI, and he asks to have the Beavis lookalike moved to another seat --- only to be replaced with a...

Craig Gillespie set to direct Supergirl film in new DC Universe. The film will simplify the title to just Supergirl from the original Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The story based on the 2021 comic focuses on Kara Zor-El finding new purpose with an alien girl's quest.
After surprising the world with the story of one of Disney's most iconic villains, Craig Gillespie is approaching the superhero world and could direct the Dcu's Supergirl movie starring House of the Dragon breakout Milly Alcock. According to new reports, as well as potentially gaining its director, the film will also be following Superman in simplifying its title from the originally announced Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Say what you will about superhero fatigue in recent months, but there's no denying that James Gunn is assembling quite a list of talent for his new DC Universe. Even though he's right in the middle of filming for "Superman", that hasn't stopped him and co-ceo Peter Safran from looking to the future for another superhero movie coming down the pipeline. After news broke earlier this year that "House of the Dragon" star Millie Alcock would be suiting up as Superman's superpowered cousin, the upcoming "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" film now has its director. That's maybe not the order of hiring we'd usually expect to see, but welcome to franchise filmmaking, folks!

“I, Tonya” director Craig Gillespie is in talks to direct the upcoming “Supergirl” film at Warner Bros.’ DC Studios.
The film, titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” is based on the DC comics run of the same name by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. It’s set to shoot later this year, after James Gunn’s “Superman” wraps filming. “House of the Dragon” breakout Milly Alcock will star in the titular role.
Alcock won the role after an extensive casting process during which Gunn and co-ceo Peter Safran flew multiple actors, including Meg Donnelly, to Atlanta for onscreen auditions on the “Superman: Legacy” set.

Actor Will Smith was given a 10-year ban from the Motion Picture Academy after his conduct at the 94th Oscars, where he slapped presenter Chris Rock onstage. This ban prohibits Smith from attending any Academy-related events, virtual or real, for the next decade. However, it is important to note that the ban does not affect his eligibility for future Oscar nominations.

"Crazy, Stupid, Love" is one of the best romantic comedies of the 2010s. Directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa from a script by "This is Us" creator Dan Fogelman, the film features an absolutely incredible all-star cast that includes Julianne Moore, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Kevin Bacon, Marisa Tomei, John Carroll Lynch, and Joey King.
"Crazy, Stupid, Love" strikes a rare balance between being clever and sincere, emotional but not overly sentimental. The LA Times called the film "a grand romantic gesture about grand romantic gestures" when it was first released, and it hits exactly why it remains so well-liked.
The plot follows several separate storylines about people looking and reaching for seemingly out-of-reach love. At the center is Carell's Cal Weaver, a man who recently separated from his wife and gets advice from a womanizer (Gosling) on how to charm women. At the same time, Cal's...

Ryan Gosling has sung in a number of his movies, notably Lars and the Real Girl, La La Land and of course Barbie. And the upcoming release of The Fall Guy – an adaptation of the ‘80s TV show – seems ripe for another Gosling serenade. After all, the show’s theme song, “Unknown Stuntman”, was actually sung by the show’s star, Lee Majors. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like Gosling will be following suit.
When asked by People if he would be taking on the song for The Fall Guy, Ryan Gosling – who also led a pretty awesome band, Dead Man’s Bones – said, “I’m not, but it’s in the film and a pretty great artist sings it…I’m excited for people to hear it.” The artist he’s referring to, for what it’s worth, is American Country Award winner Blake Shelton.

Every year, there are always a few names who are in line for some awards glory after years of being the bridesmaids. Some of those names still haven’t had their moment, such as Glenn Close at the Oscars. But, this year, the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards could finally dish out some of those moments to some key names. We’re going to take a look at some of those names in just a tick but, first, a ground rule: we are only looking at people who have never won any type of SAG award, be that an individual gong or a Best Ensemble prize. There are some names this year who have won the latter but not the former, such as Bradley Cooper and Mark Ruffalo. We won’t be looking at those guys. Instead, we are looking at the pure SAG-free thespians. Here they are.

Barbenheimer kicked off when both Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer” were released in theatres on the same day last year on July 21. However, the fun-spirited, lighthearted rivalry between the Warner Bros. comedy and the Universal biopic has continued into this awards season. Both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” have often been the most nominated films at various awards groups and two performers have found themselves head to head in pretty much every precursor so far: supporting players Robert Downey Jr. and Ryan Gosling.
Downey Jr. plays scheming politician Lewis Strauss in “Oppenheimer” and produces a thoughtful, fierce performance as the film’s primary antagonist. Gosling, meanwhile, has the time of his life in the year’s most colorful performance — playing Ken, the doll obsessed with Barbie, in “Barbie.” You couldn’t get two more contrasting performances — both are genius in their own measure. Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer“) has the lead in our Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actor. He leads our Golden Globe odds too. But is there room for an upset? There just might be. If you dig into our data you’ll find more than a glimmer of hope for Ryan Gosling in “Barbie.” Broad comedic performances don’t often rule during awards season, but if Gosling wins the Globe, that could snowball his momentum into an eventual Oscar victory in March.
Downey leads our Globe forecasts for Best Film Supporting Actor with 37/10 odds based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, but Gosling is close behind with 4/1 odds. Ryan Gosling is one of the biggest contenders for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar this year for his role as Ken in Greta Gerwig‘s smash hit “Barbie.” The Warner Bros. movie follows Margot Robbie‘s titular Barbie as she leaves Barbie Land for the real world in search of answers after suffering an existential crisis. Gosling’s performance as Ken has brought him plenty of plaudits, leading to a strong case for Best Supporting Actor in this year’s Oscars race.
However, this isn’t the first Oscars race Gosling has been in as he’s received two Academy Award nominations before. Let’s take a look back at them.
Gosling was first nominated in 2007 when he received a Best Actor notice for “Half Nelson,” which follows Gosling as a junior high school teacher with a drug habit. Gosling’s teacher forms a friendship with one of his students...

In addition, Barbie also counts nominations for Best Musical/Comedy, Best Actress Musical Comedy (Margot Robbie), Male Supporting Role (Ryan Gosling), Best Screenplay (Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach), Best Director (Gerwig), and a slot in the new category Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

The Lovely Bones almost starred Ryan Gosling, but he was recast and replaced by Mark Wahlberg. Gosling's firing was attributed to his abrupt weight gain, which deviated from Jackson's vision for the role. There are conflicting versions of why Ryan Gosling was recast in The Lovely Bones.

Ryan Gosling's career has evolved from being typecast as a romantic lead to becoming a self-aware comedic actor, which has boosted his popularity, especially online. Gosling's comedic performances exploit and twist his suave appearance, often playing against the stereotypes associated with handsome actors in spy/thriller films. The contrast between Gosling's dramatic performances, where he portrays stoic characters, and his comedic roles adds to the comedic effect, making his funny performances even more enjoyable.

Director Craig Gillespie has been in the film business for decades, but only in recent years has he seemingly stumbled onto his calling: lively retellings of “stranger than fiction” real-world stories. The kind of tales that grabbed the front pages of tabloids and newspapers alike seem to be up his alley. For years, Gillespie was a journeyman filmmaker with some acclaimed titles under his belt (namely Lars and the Real Girl) but was largely most well-known for being a go-to director for Disney movies. Between Fright Night, Million Dollar Arm, The Finest Hours, and Cruella, he could deliver it all. However, I, Tonya in 2017 provided Gillespie with his most acclaimed enterprise to date, and he found a new calling. It was time to embrace stories about unbelievable human behavior, usually with a crime element in tow.

The Talking Heads were one of the most successful bands in their heyday. From the late 70s to 80s, the David Byrne-led group produced popular music with an alternative, New Wave twist. The documentary, Stop Making Sense, was about their “Speaking in Tongues” Tour, which completely changed the way that concerts and tours are performed. Now, 30 years later, it has been re-released and remastered for IMAX by A24, first as a live-streamed event, and then in regular viewing times.
The Wrap reports that Stop Making Sense officially became IMAX’s best-selling live event ever. The remastered version of the concert documentary was released this past Monday, September 12th. The event garnered $640,839 of same-day revenue, spread across over 25 sold-out theaters in the United States, and the IMAX theater in London.

Dumb Money tells the astonishing true story of a "David vs. Goliath" financial revolution that rocked Wall Street and caused a global media firestorm during the pandemic. Keith Gill, played superbly by Paul Dano, was a Mass Mutual financial analyst working from home near Boston. He became a working class hero through a series of YouTube videos under the moniker Roaring Kitty. Gill believed that GameStop, the brick and mortar video game retailer, was being purposely undervalued by billion dollar hedge funds. They were "shorting" the stock by betting that its price would plummet, thus opening the company to the possibility of a predatory takeover where it could be broken up and sold.
Gill urged his followers to buy GameStop stock to increase its value and market share. A legion of average Joe traders, primarily through the no-fee Robinhood app and the WallStreetBets Reddit forum, drove up the stock price...

Love is a complex and multifaceted emotion that can blossom in the most unexpected places and circumstances. Throughout cinematic history, filmmakers have explored the boundaries of romantic relationships, pushing the envelope to portray unconventional and unusual love stories. Some of them are mainstream comedies, and others represent real dramas, but they are united by the common cause of showing the audience that the world of love, romance, and dating is unique, convoluted, often complex, and not as easy or ethereal as we sometimes think of it. Many famous directors tried their hand in this field and succeeded, including Jim Jarmusch, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Spike Jonze to name a few. From dark vampire romance to polyamory to kinky relationships, here are six movies that delve into the realm of unique and unconventional love.

Long before Ryan Gosling became Ken, he was Lars. Gosling starred in the 2007 film Lars and the Real Girl as the titular character, an awkward young man involved in a romantic relationship with a life-size doll. Lars is tormented by childhood trauma and suffers from Haphephobia, a fear of touching or of being touched, and delusion. Ryan Gosling's portrayal of Ken in the Barbie movie is receiving Oscar buzz due to his unexpected role as the villain who goes through an emotional transformation. A parody poster merges Barbie and Gosling's film Lars and the Real Girl, highlighting the theme of finding true love outside conventional norms. Lars and the Real Girl, though initially overlooked, is considered a hidden gem with critical acclaim for its talented cast, well-written characters, and exploration of empathy and personal growth.
A Barbie parody poster references Ryan Gosling's other movie involving a plastic doll. Ryan Gosling's Ken arguably steals the show in the Barbie movie as the unexpected villain who undergoes a surprisingly emotional arc. Ken tags along with the titular doll to the real world where he learns about the patriarchy and in turn, feels respected and accepted for the first time in his life. He returns to Barbie Land...

EntertainmentAs the supporting player to Barbie’s star, Ken unwittingly becomes the locus of little girls’ expectations of and frustrations with masculinity. The ConversationAs first boyfriends go, you could do worse than Ken Carson. Introduced in 1961 by Mattel, the Ken doll was the epitome of the all-American boy next door. Clean cut, athletic and with a sharp haircut, he was the perfect counterpart to his more famous girlfriend, Barbie. Ken’s first item of clothing was a pair of red swimming trunks, indicating his sportiness and reflecting the modern American lifestyle of leisure and penchant for outdoor recreation. Created by Barbie’s inventor Ruth Handler, Ken was a boyfriend designed by women for girls. Just as Barbie was named after Handler’s daughter, so Ken was named after her son. And so the safe, boyfriend-friend dynamic of Barbie and Ken’s relationship was established. Notably designed with no genitalia, he...

Barbie's very own Ken, Ryan Gosling, isn't a stranger to playing iconic characters. Now known for his standout roles in movies like The Notebook (2004), Lars and the Real Girl (2007), Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), and La La Land (2016), he was director Greta Gerwig's first choice to play the role of Barbie's long-term boyfriend. From romance to subversive to action, Gosling's never stuck to just one type of film. And while he's looking to create a lasting impression playing the famous himbo, he took on a bigger role early in his career.
For its one-season, 50-episode run, Gosling played the titular character in the Fox Kid Network's Young Hercules (1998-1999). The show follows the demigod as he trains at the academy for warriors in Ancient Greece. Gosling was only 17 when he was cast, but this most certainly wasn't his first time in front of the camera.

Ryan Gosling has been earning rave reviews for his 100 percent committed performance as Ken in Greta Gerwig's subversive comedic hit, Barbie. The notices have been so good that many believe Gosling is likely guaranteed an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. It should come as no surprise that the actor is good, given the fact that he already has a Golden Globe Award and two Academy Award nominations, but it does prove that Gosling is an accomplished comedic performer that should play things for humor a bit more moving forward.
Gosling's career began on the more lighthearted side at the age of 13 on Disney Channel's The Mickey Mouse Club. Running from 1993-1995, the variety television allowed the actor to showcase his sense of humor along with his musical skills alongside future mega performers that included Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Justin Timberlake.

The star-studded cast also includes Nick Offerman, Shailene Woodley, America Ferrera, Dane DeHaan, Vincent D’Onofrio, Clancy Brown, Anthony Ramos, Kate Burton, Christina Brucato, Deniz Akdeniz, Talia Ryder, Myha’la Herrold, Larry Owens and Rushi Kota.
