In his 30-year career as a composer, Carter Burwell’s film scores have run the veritable cinematic gamut. From composing for Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation., Where the Wild Things Are) to his work being the best parts of the Twilight saga, Burwell’s résumé is sporadic and unconventional, even for a man who makes film music for a living — it’s fitting, given his less-than-conventional roots as a cartoonist for The Harvard Lampoon and later as a vagrant New York punk rocker. Undoubtedly, Burwell’s become best known for the his collaborations with Joel and Ethan Coen. Last week, Sound on Sight ranked the films of the Coen Brothers, so what better way to take over The Big Score than with a similarly themed meditation on their work with Burwell? As much as the Coens’ filmography is defined by their trademark cynicism and wit, Burwell’s compositions are...

“Pilot”
Written By: Kevin Williamson
Directed By: Marcos Siega
Original Airdate: 21 January 2013
In This Episode...
We open on a prison escape. A prisoner, Joe Carroll, escapes by posing as a guard and leaving a trail of bodies in his wake. Carroll was a professor of literature who, ten years ago, turned to murder. He killed 14 women in 18 months or so. All had their eyes removed, or were otherwise killed in a manner reminiscent of victims in Edgar Allen Poe tales.
The FBI’s first call goes to Ryan Hardy, a former FBI agent who literally wrote the book on Joe Carroll. He pursued Carroll for 18 months before finally catching him, single-handedly. Ryan found Carroll in a sorority house, having just killed his 14th victim and halfway done with #15, Sarah. Carroll stabbed Ryan in the heart, then returned to Sarah. But Ryan wasn’t dead, and he shot Carroll.

One indie project that we've been keeping close tabs on is Fetch, director C.M. Downs' upcoming feature that is currently shooting in Kansas, and today he sent over two new stills and an update on what's been happening since we last heard from him.
First up is a shot of Downs with actor Jason C. Miller (who portrays the character Clyde Arbuckle). Here's how Downs describes it, "I'm walking him through his final death sequence... I'm a big fan of keeping those eyes open at death. I know it's hard to tell, but the dirt floor he is laying on is actually frozen, which is why the blood is pooling around his neck and not seeping into the ground." In case you're wondering how the ground got to be frozen, Downs explains, "These guys shot through the coldest temps in 20 years of Kansas history. When I say cold, I mean Cold!

Thomas Haden Church, former Wings regular and breakout star of 2004 film Sideways, is going after the one meidum he hasn't dabbled in yet—the internet. The 49 year-old Oscar-nominated actor has signed on to star in FEARnet's new original web series Zombie Roadkill which is set for a Spring 2010 release on the site and through its video on demand network. Henry Gayden wrote the script for the six episode horror-comedy which David Green will direct. It's the fourth project made for FEARnet from Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures, which had crafted 30 Days of Night: Blood Trails and 30 Days of Night: Dust to Dust, and Devil's Trade for the network. Aaron Lam from Ghost House will produce the series. Also announced joining the cast is teen David Dorfman known as the little boy from The Ring flicks. Zombie Roadkill centers around a group of college kids as they are driving on an unfamiliar road.

Before his career-changing turn in Sideways, most people knew Thomas Haden Church as a television actor on Wings, and Ned and Stacy. He's not returning to television quite yet, but he is working on something in a series format. Haden Church is starring in a new FearNet web/on-demand series, Zombie Roadkill. He'll play "a park ranger who partners with a teen (David Dorfman) to escape a portion of highway where roadkill is resurrected as flesh-eating zombie animals." Don't get too excited though --- the series will only last six episodes, each of which will be four to five minutes each. The series will be written by Henry Gayden and directed by David Green. FearNet is no stranger to short series, having released 30 Days of Night: Blood Trails and Dust to Dust. Their latest series is Fear Clinic with Robert Englund. It doesn't sound like this series will be anything too complicated,...

The 30 Days of Night sequel is ready to go. That’s right, a follow up to the film written to be a film which was then rejected and adapted as a graphic novel that spawned its own successful comic franchise before being picked up and adapted as a film (pay attention at the back).
The unique point about 30 Days of Night was that vampires attacked an arctic town and besieged it for - guess - thirty days. As a concept, it worked great - the vampires were awesome, the gore was intense and the first night’s battle was insanely good. Structurally, it all fell apart around the time it began jumping ahead through the days just to have the characters sitting around in an attic, trying deperately not to fart. Perhaps three days of night would have been better?
Whatever your thoughts, cameras roll on the sequel in October.

Sam Raimi is making a move in primetime television.
Raimi and Joshua Donen's Stars Road Entertainment has inked a two-year, first-look deal with Sony Pictures TV and has tapped CBS senior vp drama Robert Zotnowski to spearhead the company's TV efforts.
Zotnowski has been running the CBS drama department with Christina Davis since the ascent of Nina Tassler to entertainment president in 2004. Davis is expected to run the department solo after Zotnowski exits Friday.
Tassler called Zotnowski "one of the most talented executives I have had the privilege to work with. He has played a key part in developing some of the most successful dramas on the network."
Zotnowski said the goal for Stars Road is to expand its presence on broadcast TV and cable, with a primary focus on drama. Stars Road will develop in all genres except horror, which will continue to be handled by Raimi's Ghost House Pictures.

Talk about under the radar. The sequel to the lackluster first person Vietnam War shooter Shell Shock is carrying with it a new twist -- your enemies are now undead! Enter Shellshock 2: Blood Trails, the first ever Vietcong zombie game.
Shellshock 2: Blood Trails is a violent first-person survival horror game set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War. Gameplay centers on the use of psychological horror and fear, relying on the power of suggestion, mood, tension, and foreshadowing - implying the notion of danger, potential danger, imminent danger, and horrifying acts that have or are implied to have occurred or will come to pass.
In the words of John Rambo: "Do we get to win this time?"
From Eidos Interactive, Shellshock 2: Blood Trails is set to hit store shelves on February 24th, 2009, for the PC, PS3, and Xbox360. Pre-order your copy below and check out the trailer!

A few weeks ago we got you up to speed on The Dark Path Chronicles, the newest web series from FEARnet and Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures, who last collaborated on the 30 Days of Night series, Blood Trails and Dust to Dust. The first two episodes premiered on FEARnet yesterday – why FEARnet waited until nearly a week after Halloween to release a horror series is beyond me. The site also features a making-of video, a behind the characters featurette and writer/director Mary Lambert’s (Pet Semetary) blog. The first episode finds teenage Samantha (newcomer Amanda Bauer) reading about World War II, while waiting for her older sister Lisa (Urban Legends: Bloody Mary’s Lisa K. Lambert) to arrive from the train station. Singing while she studies, Samantha’s voice inadvertently awakens former Nazi soldier-turned vampire Jurgen (Carson Aune). We also catch glimpses of the beautiful Enid (played by...
