Disney has made a killing at the box office by reimagining some of its greatest works, from “Alice in Wonderland” to “The Jungle Book” and “Beauty and the Beast,” which remains the highest grossing film of 2017 (at least until “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” surpasses it). The company is set to do it again with a Christmas twist in next year’s “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.”
Directed by Lasse Hallström, the Christmas epic takes inspiration from both E.T.A. Hoffmann’s “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” and Tchaikovsky’s ballet “The Nutcracker.” Mackenzie Foy plays a young girl who is whisked away on an epic adventure through fantastical realms. Keira Knightley stars as the Sugar Plum Fairy, with Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, and ballet dancer Misty Copeland featured in supporting roles.
“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” will be released in theaters November 2, 2018. Watch the first trailer below.

As Father's Day approaches, we take a look at dads, through the eyes of Disney movies...
This article contains mild spoilers for The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Frozen, Moana, and Beauty And The Beast.
Picture the scene: King Triton and the Sultan are making their way through a bottle of Duty Free Glenlivet after a solid paintball sesh, having dinghied harmless crackpot Maurice due to his low social status and shan banter. At this point the Prince of the Forest walks in and they all bond over how difficult it is being a single parent powerful dude. It’s hard enough being a good dad and ruler without worrying about how dog memes are getting hecking incomprehensible these days. Can’t people see that they only want simpler dog memes and what’s best for their daughters? Maybe if they weren’t so headstrong and feisty...

Did Bad Boys 3 get delayed for nothing? It was rumored that the upcoming sequel, titled Bad Boys for Life, was in danger of being canceled altogether as Will Smith entered negotiations for a human role in Disney's live-action adaptation of its animated classic Dumbo. While Will Smith was never confirmed for that impending fairy tale adventure about a circus elephant with big ears, it was later announced that Bad Boys 3 was being bumped from January to November 2018. And that the previously planned Bad Boys 4 was being indefinitely delayed. Many speculated Dumbo was to blame, but that may not be the case.
Dumbo was announced as part of Disney's release slate last April. But has only recently started casting, with Tim Burton set to direct. Will Smith was reportedly in negotiations to star in the movie about the flying pachyderm. But it now appears that those talks have broken down,...

It's that time of year when we must say goodbye to some beloved (and not so beloved) TV shows.
From long running franchises (CSI: Cyber) to new series with big stars (Grandfathered, Telenovela) to those that viewers had high hopes for that didn't quite deliver (The Muppets), the broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox and NBC), are deciding which of their shows will live and die.
See the complete list of canceled and renewed shows below (via Entertainment Weekly).

At the time of writing, Marvel have not yet confirmed a third standalone Hulk movie, but without giving anything away, the closing events of Avengers: Age of Ultron definitely leave that door wide open. With that in mind, it seems like the perfect time to re-appraise ol' greenskin's first big screen outing, Ang Lee's multi-million dollar psychodrama, Hulk.
Released in 2003, Hulk took a total of $132.2 million at the Us box office, just short of its reputed £137 million budget. Though it eventually took over $245 million worldwide, it was perceived as a flop, significantly under-performing compared to the likes of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man or Bryan Singer's X-Men movies. Hulk not box-office Smash, in other words. Critics weren't overly kind either – it earned 62% on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, indicating decidedly mixed reviews albeit with a positive slant.

Fairy tales on telly? Nah, no-one wants to watch that, surely? Because we don’t already have Once Upon A Time, Grimm, Beauty And The Beast... Miramax clearly sees there’s an appetite for them, and has pressed Brothers Grimm screenwriter Ehren Kruger to develop and TV series based on the Terry Gilliam film. Putting something into development now, ten years after the movie, doesn’t exactly feel like striking the iron while it’s hot. But with the aforementioned series and various fairy-tale movies helping fuel interest, it’s perhaps not that surprising. Kruger will use the movie as an origin story launch pad for ongoing tales of Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm, who discover the supernatural stakes behind the folklore. The casting search will kick off once the elements are in place.“We reached out to Ehren Kruger and producing partner Daniel Bobker to see if they had any...

The long awaited big screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's "Into the Woods" finally hits theaters on Christmas Day, and judging by the reviews so far, the consensus is it ain't half bad. Of course, the fact that the film made AFI's top 10 of 2014 list, earned a Golden Globe nod for Best Film - Musical or Comedy (granted, a given) and has also earned a slew of best supporting actress nominations for Meryl Streep (not a given) should have been a big hint. Still, it's slightly surprising considering director Rob Marshall's woeful track record since his feature debut, "Chicago," won the Best Picture Oscar almost 12 years ago. Whether it can crack this year's Best Picture race remains to be seen (it would need to be a pretty massive hit to get the Academy's attention), but it will receive a significant number of nominations on Jan. 15. Inspired...

The final tallies for broadcast TV’s 2013-14 season are in, and The Big Bang Theory enjoyed the biggest gains from Live+7 DVR playback — aka Nielsen family members who watched recorded programs within a week of broadcast. Elsewhere, that Modern Family grew and grew while freshman fare such as The Blacklist and Sleepy Hollow locked in Season 2 renewals with significant surges — though no amount of DVR lovin’ could save Dracula or the Chance clan.

From Almost Human to Vikings, we’ve collated some of the year’s many Us geek TV cancellations and renewals in one handy list…

Turn, turn, turn. We’ve reached the point in the TV year when Us networks either give a thumbs up or a thumbs down to the shows on their schedules. It’s traditionally a painful time for the geek community (Almost Human, you deserved much better) but one not without its new commission excitement (Agent Carter, come on in and make yourself comfortable).
To save you the trouble, we’ve collected together the majority of geek TV cancellations and renewals below, along with details of those shows due to bow out after their next season and some of those still awaiting news either way. We’ll keep this post updated as more announcements are made.

Here’s the scorecard of recently announced TV cancellations and renewals, as we all bite our fingernails waiting for those final few verdicts to trickle in, particularly (I’m guessing), Nashville, Hannibal, and Community. Update: Hannibal just renewed.
ABC
Cancelled: Trophy Wife, Mixology, and Neighbors. (Comment: Trophy Wife was superbly cast and sweet and funny, if slight, will be missed – the other two, good riddance)
Renewed: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Once upon a Time, Resurrection, Castle, Scandal, Revenge, Goldbergs, Modern Family, Dancing with the Stars, and Grey’s Anatomy. (Comment: Woot!)
CBS
CBS renewed nearly everything back in March. Among those renewed: 2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly, Two and a Half Men, The Millers and Mom, NCIS, NCIS: La, Person of Interest, CSI, Hawaii Five-0, Blue Bloods, Criminal Minds, Elementary and The Good Wife.

Yesterday, was a busy day for new series, cancellations and renewals. Buckle up, here we go:
ABC has renewed nine shows, namely Scandal, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Grey’s Anatomy, Resurrection, The Goldbergs, Castle, Modern Family, Once Upon a Time and Revenge.
ABC has cancelled Trophy Wife. That’s too bad, Trophy Wife was a fun show that sparkled with plenty of potential. (Being a show about a modern family, perhaps it should have been given a chance to air after Modern Family.)
ABC also ordered nine new series. There are a few I think Tbl viewers will find interesting. Selfie is a comedy starring former Doctor Who companion Karen Gillan and John Cho about a woman who tries to revamp her life after obtaining the wrong kind of internet fame. Marvel’s Agent Carter is a spin-off of Captain America. Galavant is a “musical fairy tale.” Finally,...

The Little Mermaid is usually credited with kick-starting Disney’s first animation renaissance, but this often-discussed period started 3 years prior with The Great Mouse Detective. Similarly, Disney’s second animation renaissance has been credited to Frozen and Tangled when it started years earlier. While it is convenient to think that all Disney needed was Idina Menzel and a great power ballad to rediscover their movie musical roots, the path that led to Frozen’s nearly $1 billion box-office gross worldwide has been rough and messy with one major loss for the company along the way.

While Modern Family continues to debate an offer from Australia, TV Guide reports that the comedy is very likely to make the next family vacation a trip to Las Vegas. Meanwhile, we’ll have to wait until May to see Mitch and Cam‘s wedding, which is slated to be a series event along the lines of Gloria giving birth.
The CW announced their midseason schedule, which puts Beauty and the Beast on hiatus, moves The Tomorrow People to Monday nights and pairs Hart of Dixie with Whose Line Is It Anyway? on Friday nights. That doesn’t sound like a vote of confidence for either Beast or The Tomorrow People. At least the midseason shows replacing them — the post-apocalyptic The 100 and the District 9-meets-Romeo & Juliet Star Crossed — are starting out with some pretty bad buzz.

The current trend of television dramas based on dark, gritty fairy tale worlds has produced a hit in the form of ABC’s Once Upon A Time, and while similar shows like NBC’s Grimm and the CW’s Beauty and the Beast haven’t quite caught on in the same way (despite both of the latter shows receiving renewals this year), the trend of revisionist interpretations of these classic stories is here to stay.

Watch has ordered its first ever original drama series.
Legion - a Red Planet Pictures commission - is a supernatural thriller following criminologist Nathan Jones.
The 10-part drama sees Jones make a deal with the Devil to save his daughter from an inoperable brain tumour.

Dominion, the Syfy pilot based on the movie Legion has started with a cast that’s at least fairly gay-adjacent. At least, I associate them with some fairly gay shows. Christopher Egan (remember the David character from Kings, I know by now we mostly remember the cast as Sebastian Stan and … not Sebastian Stan) is the soldier who realizes he could be humanity’s savior. Meanwhile, Tom Wisdom (from the British flight attendant soap Mile High as well as 300) will play a warrior archangel who helps humanity, and Alan Dale will be the leader of one of the few remaining cities.
Tom Wisdom. That means my husband will want to sample the pilot, at least.
The third season of Project Runway All Stars will be hosted by Alyssa Milano and will feature three former winners — Jeffre Sebelia, Irina Shabayeva and Seth Aaron Henderson. Also returning are Viktor Luna and Ari (née Andy) South.

This year, the fall television schedule is a decidedly crazy beast. I know, that doesn’t seem like the sort of thing that separates any year from any other, but television is in the midst of dizzying spins of theory, and comparisons to previous years show some serious changes.
Most striking is probably the extent to which the big networks are content to leave each other alone. Also noticeable is the unspoken admission that perhaps DVRs exist, and the schedule doesn’t really need to worry quite as much about who is watching what at the exact moment it airs. We’re still pretending to a degree, but there are hints.
At the moment, you’ve only got a quick look, but we will be constantly updating this page as any changes occur, and as the new shows are available for review (sure, we’ve seen them, but we aren’t supposed to “review” them…...

Why? Because we love you. And because we wanted this for ourselves and therefore figured you wanted it too. We wanted a place where we could see when Our Shows are on, and when Our Movies are coming out, and maybe a reminder of when ComicCon is happening. You know, like a calendar.
So, we’ve done it: it’s the SciFiMafia.com Calendar. Yes, that’s a link right there, but you can find it every day, 24/7, on the top navigation bar on any SciFiMafia.com screen; it’s the far right tab entitled, conveniently, “Calendar”. There you can see all of the TV series that we cover, to the best of our knowledge, as well as premiere dates for movies, and a few choice events.

The lineups are set, the new shows are ordered and the broadcast networks are starting to gear up for another season.
Here's your first look at how the networks will stack up against one another in the fall. For the most part, the biggest shows -- like "The Big Bang Theory," "The Voice" and "Modern Family" -- are staying in their familiar timeslots, but the nets have done a good amount of timeslot shuffling with returning series and added more than 20 new shows to the mix as well -- including Fox's "Almost Human," pictured above.
It's never too early to start planning your DVR strategy for the fall. This should help. Take a look at the prime-time grid for ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and The CW in fall 2013 (roll your mouse over a day to see that night's schedule).

With the five major American TV network upfront presentations set to take place next week, each of them has been locking down their schedules for the new season.
That means the axe has fallen on numerous shows over the past 48 hours, while others have scored renewal orders. Decisions have also been made as to which pilots will be ordered to series. Here's the breakdown by network:
ABC
Renewed: Castle, Grey's Anatomy, Last Man Standing, The Middle, Modern Family, Nashville, The Neighbors, Once Upon a Time, Revenge, Scandal, Suburgatory

It's that time of year again, when the Gods of TV renewal and cancellation (we're picturing an occult, expensively robed group who live in opulently decorated caves underneath the Ge Building) can either smile or frown upon our shows, granting them new life, or sending them to an early grave.
Two of 2012's new series, NBC's Revolution and The CW's Beauty and the Beast, have escaped the early grave and will be returning in the autumn for a second season. What's that sound you just heard? Just Billy, our Revolution reviewer, dropping to his knees and cursing the heavens, and Rachael, our Beauty and the Beast reviewer, performing the dance of joy.

Happy Spring, Mafiosi! Now that we’re starting to get June premiere dates it seemed like a good time to move on from the Winter and Spring list and start a new Spring and Summer list of season and series premieres and finales. You’ll now be able to set up your DVRs and vacations accordingly. As is our way, each of Our Kind of Shows is listed by premiere/return/finale date first, then by day of the week.
If no finale date is known, episode counts are given when they are known, along with guesstimated season finale dates.

It’s a tale as old as time: A revisionist fairy tale blows up at the box office (this time, it’s Oz the Great and Powerful, which made over $80 million this past weekend), and suddenly all the studios want in on creating the next big live-action “fairy tale.” (In this case, “fairy tale” means any popular children’s story).

The CW is moving freshman drama "Cult" to Friday nights at 9 p.m. Est beginning March 8, the network announced Wednesday.
The Matt Davis mystery about a journalist trying to track down his missing brother (and the obsessive TV fans who might be behind his disappearance) drew only 941,000 viewers for its series premiere, and dropped to 877,000 viewers in its second outing, both episodes failing to rise above a 0.3 rating in the adults 18-49 demo.
While a shift from prime midweek real estate to the so-called "Friday death slot" is usually seen as a killing blow for most series, as HitFix points out, The CW is one network where the rule doesn't always apply. "Nikita" has been able to carve out a solid niche for itself on Fridays at 8 p.m., while "Supernatural" flourished for two seasons at 9 p.m. before being moved back to midweek to follow "Arrow" on Wednesdays. We're not sure if this is a good thing or a sign that the show's in trouble, but The CW just announced that they are moving "Cult" immediately from Tuesday to Friday night. Read on for the details.

After two low-rated outings, The CW’s Cult has been snapped right off of its Tuesday perch and shuttled to Fridays, where it will lead out of Nikita — and pit Billy Grimm against NBC’s soon-to-return Grimm – the network announced on Wednesday.
Taking over the Tuesdays-at-9 time slot will be CW encores, starting with a Beauty and the Beast repeat on March 5.
Cult, starring Matt Davis, Robert Knepper, Alona Tal and Jessica Lucas, premiered to 860,000 viewers and a 0.3 demo rating on Feb. 19. In its second outing, it showed precious little improvement, save for a few more viewers.

Next year's flurry of fairytale film adaptations promises some sinister thrills – but fairy stories have always been dark at heart
Harry's long gone, but wands are still selling. 2013, comme 2012, promises a score of classic fairytale film adaptations – a legion of Pinocchios, Peter Pans, Cinderellas and Wizards of Oz. A cursory squint into the crystal ball that is the Imdb website confirms that most of the upcoming fairytale films will be tormented, adult-oriented affairs; expect the adjective "twisted' to appear with some frequency. The Dark Heart of Fairy Tales, a season of older films currently playing at the Barbican, proves Hollywood isn't doing anything new. The screenings mark the bicentenary of the first publication of the Brothers Grimm stories, while acknowledging that popular fairy stories mainly derive...

The Dark Heart of Fairy Tales, a season of older films currently playing at the Barbican, proves Hollywood isn't doing anything new. The screenings mark the bicentenary of the first publication of the Brothers Grimm stories, while acknowledging that popular fairy stories mainly derive...

The 2012-13 TV season is already a month old and, as expected, returning favorites have remained just that — favorites. Naturally, this year’s best comedy winner at the Emmys remains in the Top 5 (way to go, Cam!), while Shonda Rhimes’ trusty medical drama is still fighting the good fight for ABC.
But how are all those new shows faring opposite the veterans through the first four weeks? Here’s the top (and low) rated dramas through Oct. 21 and what they are averaging in the uber-important adults 18-49 demographic. (New shows are in red and cancelled ones are crossed out). Remember,...

Yeah, trying to figure out how to watch all the great Tuesday night comedies is driving me to drink, too.
News
The Good Wife have an impressive (and huge) recurring cast, and it has just added T.R. Knight. Knight will play a political operative, which is just the kind of character who has room to make return appearances. Also, Michael J. Fox will return as Louis Canning.
In unsurprising news, Showtime has ordered a third season of Homeland. Then again, maybe you thought the shelf full of awards and solid ratings were a misdirect about the series' future.
Homeland wasn't the only show to get good news, Fox will bring back The X-Factor for a third season.
Has reality TV (on cable, at least) become the modern version of the circus sideshow?
Betsy Brandt will appear on an episode of Parenthood, playing the ex-wife of Ray Romano's character, who...

Fast National ratings for Friday, Oct. 19, 2012
The Season 3 premiere of "Nikita" on The CW bombed even by Friday standards, drawing a meager 951,000 viewers and a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demo according to fast national ratings. That's a new series low for an original episode and down sharply from the 1.4 million viewers a rerun of the "Beauty and the Beast" premiere gave CW in the slot last week.
There was better news at ABC, where the surging reality competition "Shark Tank" hit a series high 7 million viewers and took the night's 18-49 demo crown for the sixth consecutive week. At 10 p.m., a "20/20" interview with Victim #1 in the Penn State sex abuse scandal gave ABC a modest victory in the 18-49 demo.
New episodes of "CSI: NY" and "Blue Bloods" on CBS and "Grimm" on NBC were all down slightly from last week, possibly due to stronger competition on Fox from major league baseball.
