Liam Neeson is Frank Drebin Jr in the brand new The Naked Gun. Sacrilege, then, or a surprise? Here’s our review.
I love the films of the late, great Carl Reiner as a rule, but 1993’s Fatal Instinct wasn’t one of his best. Riding on the coattails of the original The Naked Gun and the Hot Shots! films, it was one of a growing collection of spoof movies that misunderstood the ground rules. One: play it straight, and two: a visual reference to another film isn’t a joke. It’s just a visual reference to another film.
(See also: Epic Movie, Meet The Spartans, Date Movie et al.)
It’s no secret that the director of the original The Naked Gun, David Zucker, has thus hardly blessed this 2025 reboot with his best wishes, but I can’t help thinking he might be pleasantly surprised. As much as...

The list of the IMDb's 250 top-rated films is an interesting peek into the minds of IMDb users. The people who log onto IMDb to give ratings seem to be, collectively, very fond of movies about criminals, prisoners, or war. There is also a heavy violent-fantasy contingent. Almost all the films on the list are about men, masculinity, and male concerns. The ten highest-rated films on the top-250 list include titles like "The Shawshank Redemption," "The Godfather," "The Lord of the Rings," "Pulp Fiction," and "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly."
Of course, the 100 worst-rated films on IMDb is more of a mixed bag. Great films tend to be the movies that many audience members and critics agree are great. Bad films tend to be individually uncovered discoveries, oddball outliers that no one wants to talk about. Classics bring communities together. Bad films feel deeply personal.

Filmmakers like Mel Brooks and the trio of David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker (also known as Zaz) once made spoofs the cream of the comedy crop with hits like "Young Frankenstein," "Blazing Saddles," "Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun." Sadly, the popularity of "Scary Movie," a truly great horror parody from 2000 that followed in similar footsteps and kicked off a franchise of its own, resulted in a swath of far worse copycats from two of the film's co-writers, Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. "Date Movie," "Epic Movie," "Disaster Movie," "Vampires Suck," and more all tried to cash-in on spoofing popular blockbusters of the time, but the comedy left plenty to be desired, and the poor reception essentially killed the greatness and the appeal of spoof comedy — at least for a little while.

Throughout the '00s, audiences were repeatedly subjected to a long series of decreasingly funny and wholly execrable spoof "Movie" movies. The trend kicked off in 2000 with the release of Keenen Ivory Wayans' "Scary Movie," a spoof of "Scream" and all the other 1990s slasher films that were still in vogue at the time. "Scary Movie" added slapstick elements, underwear shots, stoner humor, gay panic jokes, and too many gags about semen and other bodily fluids. The film, however, made $278 million on a mere $19 million budget, so it was all but assured that sequels would come.
Over the decade, there were four sequels to "Scary Movie," with each one taking aim at the pop horror movies of the day, from "Saw" to "The Grudge" to "Signs" to the remake of "The Evil Dead." The movies didn't serve as winking criticisms of modern horror movie tropes, nor did they affectionately rib...

When "Not Another Teen Movie" hit theaters late in 2001, it was riding the wave of two convergent genre booms. First, there was the burgeoning spoof craze that had been kicked off the year before by "Scary Movie." The 2000s would be full of them, eventually petering out late in the decade with low-effort flops like "Meet the Spartans," "Vampires Suck," and "Epic Movie." Second, "Not Another Teen Movie" benefited from taking aim at years of teen comedies that had overtaken the box office. The movie parodies '90s favorites like "She's All That," "American Pie," and "10 Things I Hate About You," and it even finds time to reference earlier teen movies like "Pretty in Pink" and "The Breakfast Club." (After all, everything takes place at John Hughes High School).
Unlike many 2000s spoof movies, most of which were forgotten as quickly as they premiered, "Not Another Teen Movie" has had some immense cultural staying power.

Last January, Scream 7 confirmed that it was back on track after some major setbacks. The upcoming meta slasher sequel did this by making some pretty big casting announcements, most notably the return of two previous Ghostface killers. As if by pure coincidence, Scary Movie's long-delayed sixth installment was confirmed to be in production in the same month. Even better, the Wayans Brothers — the films' original creators and stars — reclaimed the rights to their spoof series and will helm the newest one. And to top it all off, both Scream 7 and Scary Movie 6will hit cinemas in 2026, just months apart.
And not unlike the meta slasher series it parodied, the Scary Movie films have seen better days. Like Scream, Scary Movie slowly stopped focusing on horror, much to its detriment. The original was followed by three sequels of varying quality, but the franchise was killed by the irredeemable Scary Movie 5. After 13 long years,...

Scott L. Schwartz, a former professional wrestler turned screen actor who made an impression playing the heavy Bruiser in Steven Soderbergh’s “Ocean’s” heist trilogy, died of congestive heart failure on Nov. 26, 2024 at his home in Covington, La. He was 65.
Schwartz’s death was confirmed by a representative.
“Those who know Scott personally associated him with being a jolly person, so full of life, a strong loving person, foodie and travel aficionado,” a statement from his representative reads. “Scott truly loved life and everyone that he met along the way. When he wasn’t acting, wrestling or telling jokes he spent his time visiting children with cancer at children’s hospitals.
Aside from the titular eleven heist team members and their rival Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia), Schwartz’s Bruiser is the only other character to feature in “Ocean’s Eleven,” “Ocean’s Twelve” and “Ocean’s Thirteen.” In the 2001 original, George Clooney...

The Hunger Games series has become extremely popular and iconic. More than 100 million of the books have been sold, and a sixth movie is currently in development. The dark and thrilling stories in the series have captivated audiences by showing an oppressed society where children are forced to fight each other in televised games.
However, Suzanne Collins, the author of The Hunger Games, didn't just publish the series right as she graduated from college. She began her career in a much different way, writing lighthearted TV shows for children, as well as a few animated movies. While working on the shows, Collins helped get the inspiration she needed to write The Hunger Games.

Disney+ will bring its classic characters together for “Mickey and the Very Many Christmases” as well as “Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade.” It will also premiere “The Simpsons Christmas Double Episode,” “Doctor Who: Joy to the World,” and “CMA Country Christmas” to honor the season. Top non-holiday picks include the return of “Marvel Animation’s What If…?” (kicking off December 22 with new episodes premiering daily for eight days), “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” and “Elton John: Never Too Late.”
Over at Hulu, the divisive new horror flick “Cuckoo” starring Hunter Schafer is set to stream alongside a robust catalogue of various other movies.

For more than a decade, the cast of Modern Family entertained fans with their shenanigans. Featuring a dysfunctional family that was relatable to the max, the ABC sitcom saw the story of the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker family and their lives in LA. The show won several Primetime Emmys during its run, including Outstanding Comedy Series five times.
It has been four years since the final episode of the sitcom aired and fans have definitely missed the family a lot. Many child actors grew up with the show and have gone on to graduate in their careers. The adults have since gone on to work on several other projects. Here is an update on all the main cast members of Modern Family.

Cillian Murphy, post-Oscar win, goes against the norm by reprising roles in 28 Days Later and Peaky Blinders movies. Murphy's unexpected career pivot opts for character-centric projects over opportunities more likely to yield high rewards. Exciting prospects await Murphy in book-to-movie adaptations like Steve and Small Things Like These, alongside his role reprisals.
Cillian Murphy is backing up his Oscar win for Oppenheimer with a career direction actors don't often take immediately after scoring an Academy Award. Murphy was the central figure in Oppenheimer's massive global success, featuring in its lead as the American physicist and "father of the atomic bomb," J. Robert Oppenheimer. The epic biographical drama was a triumph on account of many, including big-name writer, director, and producer Christopher Nolan and Oppenheimer's star-studded cast. Still, Murphy's engrossing and phenomenal lead performance was an essential extra edge that helped make Oppenheimer a nearly $1 billion box office success.

It's been more than 10 years since the world was subjected to the last "Scary Movie" sequel, but as is the case with any famous horror movie villain, it's practically impossible to keep this series down forever. And now Paramount Pictures plans to breathe new life into this particular franchise. The studio will be teaming up with Miramax to resurrect the "Scary Movie" franchise with a brand new installment. Production begins this fall, and the film will be in theaters in 2025.
Variety reports that producer Neal H. Moritz, who is best known for producing the "Fast and Furious" movies for Universal, will be producing this new iteration. Moritz was not directly associated with any of the previous five "Scary Movie" films, but interestingly, he did produce a couple of horror flicks that were parodied in those early versions, including "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Urban Legend." Fun trivia: one of the working titles for Wes Craven's 1996 slasher satire "Scream" was "Scary Movie." Filmmaker Keenan Ivory Wayans got wind of this trivia, and decided in 2000 to make a film called "Scary Movie" intended to satirize the popularity of "Scream." The late 1990s were a curious time in popular culture, as there weren't too many dominant horror trends. Popular music was beginning to comment on its own self-awareness (see: "Flagpole Sitta") and irony became ironic. Self-reflection went from a healthy Socratic exercise into a loop of eternal recurrence. By 2000, we became so busy commenting on our own commentaries, that it was hard to see where we started. This is where "Scary Movie" dropped in.
Make no mistake, "Scary Movie" is unfunny, as are its many sequels. They're cheap, homophobic, and vulgar. Wayans took his model from spoof filmmakers like Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker, but aimed to make something...

Roald Dahl's novel "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was first published in 1963, and has been a perennial classroom favorite ever since. The story tells the tale of an impoverished, Dickensian moppet named Charlie who wins a sweepstakes held by the chocolate factory in his town. The chocolate factory, overseen by an eccentric recluse named Willy Wonka, produced sweets with eerie, magical powers; multi-flavored chewing gum caused its chewer to expand into a massive blueberry. That sort of thing. Of all the children who won Willy Wonka's sweepstakes, only Charlie survived the tour. Well, the other kids survived, but definitely the worse for wear.
Dahl's book was first adapted to a feature film in 1971, but that was only the first adaptation of many. The BBC adapted the book into a radio drama in 1983, and Zx Spectrum adapted it into a video game in 1985. There was a second video game...

It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

Tales From The Box Office: Meet The Spartans, One Of The Worst-Reviewed Movies Ever, Was Still A Hit
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
Spoof movies have been a staple of comedy for decades. For as long as popular cinema exists, there is an argument to be made that somebody should be there to send up the popular genre of the moment. Perhaps the greatest of all time in this department were David and Jerry Zucker, aka the Zucker brothers, who were behind such comedy masterpieces as "Top Secret," "Ruthless People," and, most importantly, "Airplane!"
Unfortunately, the spoof movie took a pretty rough turn in the 2000s largely thanks to the success of "Scary Movie," a send up of the slasher craze that was reignited by "Scream" several years earlier. The film was a big hit and spawned several sequels and, before getting massive rewrites after being sold to Dimension Films,...

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And with its list of new releases for December 2022, Hulu is planning accordingly.
Compared to its rival streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, and HBO Max, Hulu is a bit more holiday forward in the final month of 2022. Sure, all the streaming services are bringing some Christmas content to the table, but Hulu is the only one to plant its flag in a special called It’s a Wonderful Binge. This comedic take on a psychedelic Purge-like Christmas is set to premiere on Dec. 8.
Elsewhere on Hulu this month, subscribers can look forward to the release of FX’s Kindred (Dec. 13). Based on a thrilling novel of the same name, this series follows a woman being violently yanked back and forth in time. In what’s increasingly become a tradition, Canadian comedy Letterkenny will premiere a new season the day after Christmas.

The summer movie season may be winding down, but HBO Max is keeping the movie ball rolling in September 2021. HBO Max’s list of new releases this month is heavy on the film side of things – both in library and original offerings.
Two Warner Bros. films of note arrive this month. The James Wan-directed horror tale Malignant premieres on Sept. 10 and is followed by Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho on Sept. 17. The next installment in Adventure Time: Distant Lands (which is kind of like a film series!) is titled Wizard City and opens the month on Sept. 2
Of course, it wouldn’t be a new month of HBO Max releases without some interesting evergreen Warner movie titles. Two Warner Bros. films of note arrive this month. The James Wan-directed horror tale Malignant premieres on Sept. 10 and is followed by Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho on Sept. 17. Fred Willard, who parlayed a knack for naive characters into costarring roles on the television series Fernwood 2 Night and Everybody Loves Raymond and in several memorable films, has died. He was 86 and his death was confirmed by his agent, Michael Eisenstadt.
“Fred was one of the busiest comedic actors in a career which lasted over 50 years,” Eisenstadt said in a note. “He had recently completed his Emmy nominated recurring role on Modern Family and can be seen later this month in his recurring role as Steve Carrell’s dad in the Netflix series Space Force. Jimmy Kimmel had Fred recur on his show on an average of every two weeks doing comedic sketches until the stay-at-home order began. Fred truly enjoyed every role and gave each performance his own special spin. He was truly a comedic genius.”

The latest clip from Lucky Day gives some insight into how awesomely over-the-top the movie is. We've all seen Crispin Glover blow up a cop car with a grenade launcher from the first trailer, so we know the movie is already a bit unhinged. Glover has had a pretty amazing career over the years from Back to the Future, all the way to Epic Movie, and he's showing no signs of slowing down or mellowing out. Lucky Day marks the first time the actor has been back on the big screen since 2010's Hot Tub Time Machine and he was missed.
Director Roger Avary, writer of Pulp Fiction and Killing Zoe, lends his high-energy, bone-crunching style to this crime saga starring Crispin Glover (American Gods), Nina Dobrev (Flatliners), and Luke Bracey (Point Break). Finally out of prison, Lucky Day finds safecracker Red (Bracey) rejoining his wife (Dobrev) and daughter and vows to go straight.

Dinosaurs stomped back onto the internet a few weeks ago when a pre-Jurassic World 3 short film hit Ethernet cables across the globe. People seemed to enjoy it well enough, certainly more than Fallen Kingdom, but more on that later.
The short, titled “Battle at Big Rock,” brought up questions of a possible live-action Jurassic show. And actually, a fan brought that question up to someone surprising. During a live screening/Q&a of Jurassic World, director Colin Trevorrow was asked about if a dino-series was in the works, and the Director Who Never Smiles gave as glorious of a non-answer as one could expect:
“If the audience demands [other live-action stories], we will provide.”
So, there you have it: it’s possible, but nothing official yet.
After watching “Battle at Big Rock,” I’m not convinced that a Jurassic sitcom would be a good idea. You can only get attacked by...

Love Island has officially made its way across the Atlantic and onto Us viewers' screens, combining our favorite elements of Big Brother, Bachelor in Paradise, and the general concept of British invasion. The sultry Summer show (try saying that three times fast!) throws a group of single well-waxed individuals into a villa in Fiji, where they're then paired up, compete in challenges, and may be sent packing at any given moment. But, who's helping call the shots here? Host Arielle Vandenberg - a name you'll be hearing a whole lot more of this Summer.
So, who is Arielle Vandenberg? While some claim she's a dead-ringer for Love Island UK host Caroline Flack, there is, of course, much more to know about Vandenberg than the features she shares with her English counterpart. Here's a very quick rundown on the woman guiding our islanders through the many highs and lows of this Summer's Love Island on CBS.

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is one of the last of its kind. The spoof movie – that is, the vigorous feature-length ribbing at popular films and Hollywood pieties of the moment – was already in decline by the late 2000s.

Horror fans have been looking forward to seeing Mike Flanagan's Before I Wake since the film was teased in trailers back in 2015, but bankruptcy issues at Relativity Media delayed and ultimately brought the movie's release to a halt. Since that time, Flanagan directed two well-received films for Netflix, and the streaming service has now revealed that they will bring Before I Wake out of film purgatory and into the warm glow of the TV screen.
Netflix revealed the exciting Before I Wake news in their full announcement of titles being added to their streaming lineup in January of 2018. After naming Alfonso Cuarón the best director of the 21st century, Metacritic has gone ahead and averaged out filmmakers’ Metascores to name the worst directors since 2000. As with the first list, filmmakers must have made at least four movies in the last 17 years to be eligible — meaning that Tom Six (“The Human Centipede”) and Dinesh D’Souza (“Hillary’s America”) don’t qualify despite the fact that they’re far from critical darlings.

comScore today announced the official worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of June 25, 2017, as compiled by the company’s theatrical measurement services.
This weekend saw the release of Transformers: The Last Knight, the fifth entry in the long-running Transformers franchise. Interest in this film — at least on the domestic front, has seemed to be at an all-time low, with audiences growing frustrated with the lack of attention to storytelling in the film. This past weekend’s box office of $69 million for Wednesday-Sunday, and $45 million for the standard Friday-Sunday. This is a franchise low for the series, whose other lowest domestic opening was around $70 million for the very first film. However, with its worldwide haul sitting at around $265 million, it’s very clear that Paramount never planned on putting their stock in North American audiences. In short, it’ll likely make money due to the foreign box office, but...

comScore today announced the official worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of June 18, 2017, as compiled by the company’s theatrical measurement services.
This weekend saw the release of a few movies in the form of the Pixar flick Cars 3, the Tupac biopic All Eyez on Me, not to mention, the shark movie 47 Meters Down, and the comedy film Rough Night. The past weekend brought a bit of a mixed bag.

As expected Cars 3 did okay, taking in $53 million in its opening weekend. It was enough to firmly land it in first place, but it was nothing to get excited about. It had the least successful opening of any Cars film to date, and as it stands, it has one of the lower grossing openings of Pixar films as a whole. That being said, it isn’t a bad opening,...

comScore today announced the official worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of June 11, 2017, as compiled by the company’s theatrical measurement services.
Wonder Woman performed amazingly in its second weekend, taking in $57.2 million domestically, only dropping 44.6 percent from its already-stellar first weekend. As Warner Bros. hoped, the film has managed to garner amazing word of mouth, resulting in its solid second weekend. As of this writing, the film has taken in $435 million worldwide. When all said and done, we wouldn’t be surprised if it neared $750 million worldwide by the end of its run, but we’ll have to wait and see.
The Mummy, on the other hand, did not do as well as hoped. Projections a week or so prior to the film’s release pegged it at around $35 million to $42 million, but as soon as the negative reviews started to pour in, that prediction was lowered to around $32 million.

By this time, you’re probably more than aware that Wonder Woman exceeded all sorts of expectations this past weekend when it, not only surprised critics and fans with its amazing quality, but with its ridiculous box office performance. Weeks ago, it was speculated that the film would only take in around $65 million domestically, but it went above and beyond, taking in $100.5 million, securing its place as the highest grossing opener for a film directed by a woman. Wonder Woman also received an A CinemaScore, meaning audiences that went to see it pretty much got exactly what they wanted out of the flick. This is usually a sign that a movie will have a long life in theaters, but we’ll have to see is that comes to fruition,...

How hysterical do you find the name Professor Poopypants? Not very? Then you are likely a grown adult (and probably female). If you don’t find gags about farts, poop, tinkle, wedgies, and giant toilets endlessly hilarious – if you are not, in body or spirit, a 9-year-old boy, then Dreamworks new animated film Captain Underpants – The First Epic Movie is not for you. And that is precisely the point.
Few things command disrespect like the sight of a grown man wearing his tighty-whities, however the bald and barefoot Captain Underpants happens to be a superhero. As one character in Captain Underpants The First Epic Movie notes: “Most superheroes look like they’re flying around in their underwear…. Well, this guy actually is flying around in his underwear!” The Captain is the comic-book invention of a pair of 9-year old troublemakers, George and Harold (voiced by Thomas Middleditch and Kevin Hart...

It’s hard to say the name “Captain Underpants” without smiling, and the big-screen debut of the skivvies-clad superhero (the film’s subtitle is “The First Epic Movie”) maintains that same goofy, innocently naughty nature for nearly its entire running time. Yes, there are farts, and musical numbers choreographed around infinite rolls of toilet paper, and an arch-nemesis named Professor Poopypants; at the preview screening I attended, kids were delighted, and so were more than a few adults who were willing to surrender to the animated feature’s grammar-school scatology and loopy, anything-for-a-laugh ethos. Adapted by Nicholas Stoller (“The Muppets”) from the popular books.

The first clip from the upcoming Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie has been released by DreamWorks Animation. The movie is based of the insanely successful children's novels by Dav Pilkey who writes and illustrates the books, and is about a former principle who is hypnotized by two students and turned into Captain Underpants. Captain Underpants isn't like normal superheroes. Captain Underpants is slow and dimwitted, but his intentions are good. The book was picked up by DreamWorks in 2011 to be made into a movie and has since been pushed back a few times, but now has the official release date of June 2nd.
The trailer for Captain Underpants was released last month and more or less showed the origin of Captain Underpants and introduced the main characters George Beard and Harold Hutchins who live in Ohio.
