With shows like “Seal Team,” the canine contributions to overseas military efforts are starting to get recognized more in scripted series. “War Dog: A Soldier’s Best Friend” takes a look at the real-life dogs who helped inspire those stories.
HBO released the first trailer for this documentary, which premieres on Veterans Day, November 13. The film follows the relationships between three soldiers and their canine companions. With stories from Army Rangers and Special Operations officers, they’re tributes to the dogs who helped their human trainers return home safely. Away from the battlefield, the process of becoming one of these elite military dogs is just as selective as the process that picks the human complement of the forces they join.

Like other stories of wartime battles, these soldiers have heartfelt remembrances of fallen comrades.

The real story behind Bowe Bergdahl is only beginning to unfold. While it may take weeks or months to find out exactly why and how the U.S. soldier may have left his platoon in Afghanistan in 2009 and found himself held captive by the Taliban for five years, Bergdahl’s narrative has renewed long seething debates about America’s foreign entanglements in the Middle East. Was Bergdahl a deserter or hero, a traitor or a Pow? And ultimately, was his reason for being in Afghanistan justified or, to use the military acronym, Fubar (fucked-up beyond all recognition)? American documentary cinema has long embraced this debate, with U.S. soldiers like Bergdahl emerging as some of the most powerful characters in this ongoing national drama. Think of Scott Camil, the traumatized Vietnam vet, in 1972’s Winter Soldier, who testified to the horrifying brutalization and murder of innocent Vietnamese civilians by U.

For the globally conscious among us who want to want to see Hotel Rwanda (how long has it been sitting in your Netflix queue?), Earth Made of Glass, exec produced by Channing Tatum, offers an emotionally engaging, informative view of post-genocide Rwanda that spares you from anything too hard to stomach. The idea of the film is not to replay the horror of the Rwandan genocide, but to find a blueprint for peace and ending cycles of violence in conflict areas. Tatum saw producing the movie as an opportunity to educate himself as well as younger viewers. “I knew of the genocide,...

Scarlet #4 (Click to enlarge)
Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev deliver another stunning issue of Scarlet. The writing is superb, the art is unbelievable, and what really makes this comic so interesting to read, is its level of realism. From the premise, to the character’s motivations, through to the detailed illustration style, the whole comic feels more like a gritty documentary in the vein of Restrepo or The War Tapes than a fictional bi-monthly book.
Scarlet depicts the next-American revolution… the one that seems like it could happen any day now. The story is told, largely, through the eyes and narrative voice of Scarlet, the young woman at the heart of this new revolution. This in turn, helps connect the reader on a more personal, emotional level to what could be “another dystopian tale of uprising”. And what makes this story so very unnerving, is after the events of...

Americans soldiers, weighted down with backpacks and machine guns, rush up a hill in the remote mountains of Afghanistan. We follow them closely through the underbrush as bullets whiz past their heads, then voices call out -- a man is down, one of theirs. A grieving soldier goes into shock, breathing heavily, on the verge of breakdown, as his comrades try to steady him. It's utter chaos -- in short, this is war.
But this is a very specific representation of war -- as chronicled in new documentaries like Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger's "Restrepo," the Danish Cannes winner "Armadillo" and photojournalist Danfung Dennis' work-in-progress "Hell and Back Again." Visceral, alarming and in-your-face, these Afghanistan docs offer a depiction of war that isn't exactly new in the mediascape, but it stands in striking contrast to the images we've seen coming out of Iraq for the last several years.

Deborah Scranton and President Paul Kagame, courtesy Getty Images Last night's World Premiere of Earth Made of Glass at the Bmcc Tribeca Performing Arts Center included many special guests, but one in particular was an extraordinary honor for Tribeca, as the Festival welcomed His Excellency President Paul Kagame of Rwanda. The film, directed by returning filmmaker Deborah Scranton (The War Tapes, Tff 2006), looks at the 1994 genocide in that country through the lens of both the current head of state and some everyday citizens. Earth Made of Glass is a moving portrait of a country that has come through a devastating period of darkness into a period of hope and delicate peace. The Film Fellows program at Tribeca Film Institute allows high-school students who are aspiring filmmakers to experience the Festival - they attend screenings of all types of films, meet with filmmakers, and attend workshops - in an effort to...

Tonight, we have chosen to preview a film, which seeks to expose a genocide, hopefully answering many questions. Deborah Scranton’s Earth Made of Glass is a documentary, focusing on the genocide in Rwanda, occuring in 1994, whose ramifications are still felt to this day.
From the trailer, the film looks to be feature a very serious, grim topic, but is something that we should all expose ourselves to, as this modern horror is an event that few talk about today.
Earth Made of Glass will screen on April 26th, 27th, 30th, and May 1st. For a complete list of screening times and locations, visit the official Tribeca Page. You can also visit the films website, become a fan on Facebook, or follow the film’s events on Twitter.

World of honors at Tribeca fest
NEW YORK -- The fifth annual Tribeca Film Festival celebrated a decidedly political and international selection of winners at its awards ceremony Saturday night, with three war-themed films taking top honors. Tristan Bauer's Argentine/Spanish Blessed by Fire (Iluminados por el fuego), the tale of a Falklands War soldier, won the Founders Award for best narrative feature, and Deborah Scranton's U.S. The War Tapes, featuring footage from U.S. soldiers in Iraq that presenter Ken Burns hailed for its "spellbinding brutality," took home the best documentary feature prize. The audience award went to Linda Hattendorf's The Cats of Mirikitani, the documentary tale of a homeless Japanese-American who lost family members in the Hiroshima bombings. Tribeca co-founders Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, actors Josh Lucas and Lucy Liu and New York film boosters Pat Kaufman and Katherine Oliver found the winners' names wrapped in giant fortune cookies, in synch with the event's Chinatown banquet hall locale, the Golden Bridge.

Michael Skolnik and Rebecca Chaiklin's documentary poignantly demonstrates by use of many charts showing how such laws are unfair and how they especially target the black and Hispanic communities. Also thought-provoking is how the filmmakers made a strong point in outlining the importance of the prison lobby in the issues; after all, they benefit from having all the cells occupied! The film's 'in your face' approach is helped with the film's hip hop music soundtrack; its authoritative narration and the powerful footage of Russell Simmons' quest are truly remarkable.
