I'm sad to see this show go, but as the saying goes, "all good things must come to an end." There are two episodes left of The CW's The Vampire Diaries, and to give fans something to sink their teeth into one last time, the final season will be released on Blu-ray (with Digital HD) and DVD on June 13th.

The Tribeca Film Festival announced its jurors for this year’s event, which runs from April 16-27. The list includes Toni Collette, Lake Bell, Whoopi Goldberg, Catherine Hardwicke, Heather Graham, Anton Yelchin, Paul Wesley and 26 other leaders of the filmmaking community.

In addition to the Festival’s main competition juries in seven categories, Tribeca named Delia Ephron, Natasha Lyonne, and Gary Ross to select the second annual Nora Ephron Prize, which awards $25,000 to a female writer or director.

At The Vampire Diaries convention in Chicago yesterday, Paul Wesley dished on swimming with dolphins, yearning to direct and taking over Ian Somerhalder's body for a day - but first he dispelled a rumor started by Daniel Gillies.

During his Q&A session at the event, Gillies said Wesley took the longest of all Tvd stars to get primped for a scene. But Wesley offered to bring in proof to contradict this claim - call sheets that detailed how he was only required to show up 30 minutes prior to a scene for makeup, versus one hour for the other two leads - and concluded:

"I think he's just confused because I look the best."

The Vampire Diaries had as much going against as for it when it first hit televisions, and the show’s popularity is actually somewhat surprising. While the general popularity of vampires, indeed teen vampires, obviously leads to a variety of efforts hoping to cash in, at some point the genre is overworked, and you’re rolling the dice as much as with any other new show.

With not only the general vampire similarity, but also the time-honored “good” vampire struggling against his nature (a key in the other big two at the moment), predicting the success of The Vampire Diaries was not an easy call. Once you get into the territory of what may well be perceived as copycat material, it becomes very difficult to judge what the reaction should be, no matter what reaction (as a critic) the material might deserve.

Only one genre related Blu-ray hits stores this week -- Escape from L.A. -- but a decent crop of DVDs accompanies it, including the documentary to end all documentaries, Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy.

In addition we get a couple of two-packs, Pulse/Sick Nurses and Midnight Movie/Killer Movie. I find the latter pairing interesting -- and helpful -- as I've never quite been able to remember which movie is which when it comes to those two flicks. There's also an odd three-pack: Severed: Forest of the Dead/Shallow Ground/The Rage.

Now that Paul Wesley is on everyone's radar thanks to "The Vampire Diaries", his previous brief outing as an angel in TV's "Fallen" has of course hit DVD. The pilot for another failed TV show, "Virtuality", also comes out on disc this week.

Those of you who are of a certain age no doubt remember the phrase "Must See TV" and its application to NBC's Thursday night lineup of shows during the 1990's. Casting of the three leads is now complete on the CW pilot Vampire Diaries, and not a moment too soon. I was just about out of puns. Paul Wesley, who played an angel on ABC Family's Fallen, this time has a bit of the devil inside him, having been cast as Stefan, one of two vampire brothers fighting over the central heroine, Elena.

ABC Family has picked up Samurai Girl, which the cable network plans to air as a "major programming event" consisting of three two-hour episodes.

Samurai, from ABC Studios, is set to start production in the spring in Vancouver and is slated to air over one weekend in August 2008; the strategy is similar to one the network previously took with Fallen.

Samurai, based on a series of popular young-adult novels, centers on a 19-year-old Japanese girl named Heaven (Jamie Chung) who discovers that the wealthy businessman who adopted her as an infant is really the head of the Yakuza (the Japanese mafia) and had her beloved brother brutally murdered. She breaks from her family and begins training to become a samurai, and with the help of a group of new American friends, sets out to take down her father's evil empire.

Samurai also stars Brendan Fehr, Saige Thompson, Kyle Labine, Anthony Brandon Wong, Steven Brand and Kenneth Choi.

Samurai was brought to ABC Family through Alloy Entertainment, the company behind the series of novels.
