10 years after taking the helm of Yle drama’s department and contributing significantly to Finnish drama’s hike in quality and international reach, Jarmo Lampela continues to broaden his network of international partners. Italy and Canada are the latest countries to be conquered by the visionary Finn who is attending Lille’s Series Mania confab with several projects.
“Torna a Surriento” will be Yle’s first co-production with Italian pubcaster Rai. The four-part romantic drama, in pre-production, is co-written by Guglielmo Finazzer, Dario Carraturo, Jens Martin Mienna and Aleksi Puranen. The story turns on a Neapolitan hustler who inherits a remote estate in Finnish Lapland. What he sees as a quick payday turns into a tumultuous two-month stay as he ends up clashing with the local Sámi community and falling for a fierce reindeer herder. Finland’s Whatevergroup is producing with Italy’s Viola Films, Norway’s Rein Films and Iceland’s Glassriver.

The Ruthless Aggression Era marked the debut of WWE greats like John Cena, Randy Orton, Batista, and more, who rose to the occasion and elevated the status of WWE, turning it into a global powerhouse. The period was not limited to debuts only because it featured some memorable feuds that left a lasting impression in the minds of the fans. One such feud was between Matt Hardy and Edge.

However, this feud was not limited until the cameras rolled. The beef was personal and perhaps the most uncomfortable of all time. After all, it featured a love triangle between Hardy, The Rated R Superstar, and Lita. Their saga featured the most vicious of quarrels and comments that are forever engrained in the minds of wrestling fans.

Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League, a sequel to the 2018 cult hit Batman Ninja, is a film that revels in its own absurdity while delivering a heartfelt tribute to both anime conventions and the DC Universe. Directed by Junpei Mizusaki and Shinji Takagi, with a screenplay by Kazuki Nakashima, this animated superhero romp picks up a day after the events of Batman Ninja, plunging Batman and his allies into a multiversal mash-up that’s equal parts thrilling, ridiculously gorgeous and surprisingly poignant. This new film doubles down on the over-the-top nonsense of the original, offering a wild ride that’s as much a love letter to Japanese culture as it is a playful riff on the superhero genre.

As a fan of Australian genre cinema, I find 1979s Thirst to be a fascinating, often overlooked entry in the country’s horror canon. Directed by Rod Hardy, this film stands as an intriguing bridge between the Ozploitation movement of the 1970s and the more refined horror-thrillers that would emerge in the 1980s. While it may not have the same raw, aggressive energy as Wake in Fright (1971) or Long Weekend (1978), it carves its own niche by blending Gothic horror with the uniquely unsettling atmosphere of Australian psychological thrillers.
What immediately sets Thirst apart is its distinct take on the vampire mythos. Rather than leaning into traditional European folklore, Hardy and screenwriter John Pinkney reimagine vampirism through the lens of a shadowy cult, which feels more...

For many anime fans, the bombastic action scenes pulled them in before anything else. The great stories and awesome characters might've helped them stay, but the action is what catches most people's eyes. Even veteran anime fans still love watching a captivating fight scene unfold.
That just makes it all the more frustrating when a fight that could've been great just winds up letting fans down. Sometimes the fight just wasn't as important to the studio as it was to the fans. Other times, the animation drags the fight down, making it a chore to watch. Whatever the case, disappointed fans wind up being the real losers.

Sometimes a last-second reveal of a joke character's true power is cool. Bleach's introduction of Yammy's true identity is not one of those times.

Widely considered to be not only one of the best crime and gangster movies of all time but one of the greatest pieces of American cinema ever made, Francis Ford Coppolla's adaptation of The Godfatherremains one of the most revered movies in the history of the medium. Nominated for ten Academy Awards and winning three, including one for Best Picture, the film tops many fans' lists as the best movie of all time.
With such a perfect movie in the crime and gangster film subgenre, it is hard for even the best contenders in the same category to measure up. But some gangster films are so good that they come close to being as good as The Godfather, reminding audiences why the tragic stories of organized crime and its affects on the world around it can be one of the most compelling subjects for a movie.

Academy voters had no love for Joker: Folie à Deux, but Batman leads the pack when it comes to comic book movies at the Oscars.
Many months ago, Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux seemed a likely Oscar contender at this weekend’s Academy Awards ceremony. Breaking the Batman mould, the 2018 original remains the most-nominated comic book movie to date with 11 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director, and a Best Actor win for Joaquin Phoenix.
With the addition of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, the meta-fictional musical sequel came with more awards hype. This evaporated on contact with the movie’s lacklustre opening weekend, not to mention the disappointed reception from critics and fans.
(Full disclosure – I am blissfully ignorant of Phillips’ Joker movies, so won’t comment on either of them. Wherever you stand on them, it should suit everyone just fine if the worst movie that gets made...

Valentine’s Day might be about flowers, chocolates, and romance – but in horror, love often leads to obsession, betrayal, and bloody revenge. With slasher thrills, supernatural hauntings, or twisted tales of doomed romance, horror movies set around love and relationships add an extra layer of intensity. Interestingly, horror movies that use romance as a device go right back to the origins of horror cinema, intertwining desire with thrills and kills.

South Korea has a strong presence in the international landscape of entertainment, especially in music and cinema. The horror genre has been explored in South Korea since the early days of the country's cinema and evolved significantly throughout the decades, becoming a synonym of innovation and expertise in the genre. K-cinema is particularly associated with some of the best supernatural horror and zombie horror movies, yet Korean horror cinema has something for every taste.
Known for blending cultural themes into horror, the genre has been through different phases. Early Korean horror movies were often cautionary tales that reflected tendencies and fears within Korean society, perfectly exemplified by the 1960 psychological horror movie The Housemaid. Around the late 1990s and early 2000s, the genre experienced a renewal in South Korea. This shift propelled the making of more high-octane action horror, like 2006's The Host, and other subgenres that are still popular in Korean cinema today.

The stars of Smallville recently discussed the Superman prequel series, revealing what mementos they took from the set. The fan-favorite The CW series, which continues to be popular, ended its remarkable ten-season run fourteen years ago.
Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum, Kristin Kreuk, and Erica Durance were all on the Smallville MegaCon panel. Cbr asked the actors what they had taken from the set, to which the Clark Kent/Superman actor Welling responded, "Just my memories." His co-stars, however, were not quite as reticent. Kreuk revealed she had kept a memento from one of the wildest Smallville episodes, "Thirst," which had her character Lana Lang turn into a vampire. There are nine significant storylines in Gotham that ultimately went nowhere, leaving some unanswered questions about the DC series. Gotham is known for its ambitious narratives and bold reimaginings of Batman’s origin and the Dcu timeline. It featured numerous gripping narratives, yet some of the most intriguing were abandoned or forgotten about. From unresolved character arcs to dropped teases of iconic villains, the show left many threads dangling.
Gotham was a prequel series focused on the origins of Batman’s world, following Jim Gordon’s rise through the ranks of the Gotham City Police Department. Smallville tells the story of a young Clark Kent growing up in a Kansas farm town. It premiered in 2001 and ran for 10 seasons, centering on the arcing mythology of Superman with interludes dealing with Kryptonite-infected "freaks of the week." However, with 22 episodes a season, it stands to reason they weren’t all winners.
In the Season 5 Smallville episode "Thirst," Lana Lang begins attending Met U and needs to find last-minute housing, so she pledges to a sorority. Tri-Psi president Buffy Sanders accepts Lana into the house and turns her into a vampire. "Thirst" is universally considered the worst episode of Smallville - even by the creators and cast.

Robot zombies? It could happen, and often did in "Transformers: Prime."
Since "Transformers" has been remade so many times over the past 40 years, new cartoons will sometimes use a central gimmick to set themselves apart from the crowd. "Beast Wars" had robots that transformed into animals instead of vehicles. The 2003 anime series "Transformers: Armada" cashed in on the "Pokémon" craze and had the Autobots and Decepticons fighting over "Mini-Cons," human-sized Transformers that could unlock great powers in the larger ones. The currently airing "Transformers: Earthspark" has introduced a new batch of characters called the "Terrans," who are Transformers created on Earth instead of the metal planet Cybertron.
For the 2010-2013 cartoon "Transformers: Prime," the gimmick was Dark Energon. "Energon" is the Transformers' primary fuel source, and the literal lifeblood of their creator, Primus. Dark Energon (which glows a sickly purple instead of crystal blue) is the blood of Primus' shadow self,...

There's an awful lot of confusion surrounding plans for The Batman Part II. An article published by Entertainment Weekly around the time filmmaker Matt Reeves was promoting The Penguin suggested the sequel's script was finished; James Gunn, however, has repeatedly said no draft has been handed into DC Studios.
This has led to some pretty wild theories about the movie being cancelled, with Gunn accused by some of sabotaging Reeves so he can focus on the Dcu-set The Brave and the Bold.
It's a wild claim and makes zero sense when The Penguin received rave reviews, especially as Gunn made no secret of the fact DC Studios was involved in that show's production. Reeves has also been named as a producer on the upcoming Clayface movie.
Gunn has now confirmed that the details shared by that EW reporter were "misconstrued." He'd later add that, while it's true DC Studios hasn't...

Jack Nicholson was already a major star before he played the Joker in 1989's "Batman." But his unprecedented deal with Warner Bros. for that particular blockbuster netted the actor more than $50 million and made him one of the wealthiest performers in Hollywood — not to mention one of the most influential. After somehow wangling a portion of the profits from both the box office and merchandising revenues from "Batman," Nicholson set a new precedent for big-name performers moving forward. The actor also basically ensured that "Batman" never actually turned a profit for Warners even though it became a box office smash.
When "Batman" debuted in the summer of 89, it arrived amid a public frenzy dubbed "Bat-mania" by the media. Audiences were clamoring for director Tim Burton's take on the Caped Crusader, which promised to restore the "Batman" property to its dark roots and deliver a serious take on a...

DC Proves Batman & Robin’s ‘Alfred Trauma’ Is Far From Over With 1 Heartbreaking Yet Important Scene
Warning: Contains Potential Spoilers for Batman And Robin #16!
Five years have passed since Bane ruthlessly killed Alfred Pennyworth in front of Damian Wayne's Robin, snapping the butler’s neck in a brutal act of retaliation against Batman. Yet, despite the time that has passed, it’s clear DC is far from finished exploring the Alfred-centric trauma haunting the Dynamic Duo, as one recent heartbreaking and narrative-defining scene demonstrates.
...Alfred’s death could serve as a deciding factor in Damian’s choice to quit his role as Robin...
Despite Alfred’s death in the 2019 City of Bane storyline, his presence has loomed large across Bat-Family comics, from Batman to Nightwing and beyond. However, it is Damian Wayne who has been most deeply affected by the loss, a theme explored in Joshua Williamson’s Robin and Batman and Robin series.
Now, with Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Carmine Di Giandomenico taking over the Batman and Robin run,...

“SNL” opened Saturday’s show by tackling the thirst surrounding alleged UnitedHealthcare CEO killer Luigi Mangione through the lens of Nancy Grace, with cast member Sarah Sherman having a ball with her impression of the crime TV personality.
Sherman delighted in twisting the pronunciation of words as her Nancy Grace appeared outraged by the reaction to Mangione.
“The healthcare assassin Luigi Mangione has got women and gay guys alive all hot and bothered,” Sherman’s Grace said. “I mean seriously? This guy looks like Dave Franco with Eugene Levy’s eyebrows.”
Except instead of “seriously” Sherman pronounced it more like “sry-uh-zlee?”

1992's "Batman Returns" was initially met with a reaction somewhere between confused and concerned, mostly due to it being a much darker affair than audiences and critics had expected. But it has since firmly established its standing as one of the great Batman interpretations. Even as Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy mostly dominates conversations about the greatest Batman movies, "Batman Returns" remains an inspired and beautiful expressionist nightmare that represents a full realization of director Tim Burton's artistic vision.
But it wasn't just Burton's direction and production designer Bo Welch's Art Deco-meets-Fascism set design that made "Returns" such an immersive and unforgettable experience. Danny DeVito's performance as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin stole the show — which, considering this was a movie that also starred Michael Keaton, Christopher Walken, and Michelle Pfeiffer, is a pretty impressive accomplishment. While Colin Farrell hated his costume for 2024's "The Penguin" series,...

When the cameras will roll on The Batman Part II remains a mystery as its development takes longer than anticipated. One person wondering aloud why the upcoming superhero sequel continues to be delayed is lead actor Robert Pattinson, who offers the perfect response regarding the continued wait.
Speaking with the New York Times, Pattinson addressed the many delays Part II has faced, which have prompted endless cancelation rumors on social media. With the script for the upcoming big-screen installment of Matt Reeves' Bat-verse yet to be completed and fans' patience wearing thin, Pattinson commented on the slow pace of The Batman trilogy, teasing that he may “genuinely be retiring by the end of them.”

One Batman villain has appeared twice in live-action DC movies, but he may only become an actual villain until the Dcu's The Brave and the Bold or a future sequel. Batman has faced several enemies on the big screen so far, including various takes on A-list villains such as the Joker, the Riddler, the Penguin, and Two-Face, as well as famous Batman enemies like Bane, Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, and Superman himself. Every live-action Batman portrayal has faced villains spanning the spectrum of realism. However, there are still many DC antagonists Batman hasn't had the chance to fight in a live-action movie yet.
Some details in The Batman and The Penguin suggest that The Batman - Part II's main antagonists will be the Court of Owls — a secret society that hasn't even been mentioned in any live-action DC movie so far. Meanwhile, the Dcu's The Brave and the Bold...

Despite DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn’s confirmation that a script for The Batman: Part II hasn’t been finished, one actor from The Batman (2022) has an interesting idea of who could be the villain in writer-director Matt Reeves's follow-up. Jeffrey Wright, who played James Gordon in The Batman told The Movie Dweeb that the son of James Gordon, James Gordon Jr., would make for a great adversary for the caped crusader.
“There’s a lot to choose from,” said Wright when asked which character from the universe he would like to see tangle with Gordon and Batman. “You know, Gordon actually has a son who becomes somewhat nefarious. That could be a possibility,” said The Hunger Games actor. Gordon’s son has never been adapted into a live-action version of Batman.

The Batman Part II continues the saga involving Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight and could potentially see a confrontation between Gotham's chief protector and his long-time rival, the Joker. However, the man who played the Clown Prince of Crime claims he still doesn't know if his character will appear in the sequel.
Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, The Batman star Barry Keoghan addressed whether he'll reprise his role as the Joker in Part II. Though it's been widely reported Keoghan will return to play the nihilistic criminal in Part II, the Irish actor claims he hasn't heard anything about a potential feature. "It's a big one, but I am going to say that, if the opportunity came about, yes, I'd love to explore, and given the opportunity, really dive into it," he said "But I have not been contacted, I've not heard anything."

Warning! This post contains Spoilers for The Penguin episode 8Batman is finally acknowledged in The Penguin finale, which suggests why the Dark Knight never intervened in Oz Cobb's gang war. DC's The Penguin takes place in a dark and forgotten corner of DC's Gotham City, where innocent people like Rhenzy Feliz's Victor Aguilar resort to a life of crime and hardened criminals like Oz Cobb and Sofia Falcone quench their thirst for power by killing everyone around them. Gotham neighborhoods like Crown Point are overlooked by the government, the police, and apparently, by Batman himself.
As expected, The Penguin episode 8 brings the conflict to an end on a tragic note, as Oz's successful plan to have Sofia Gigante captured by the Gcpd is overshadowed by Frances' stroke. Oz refuses to accept that Frances will never recover, and takes her out of the hospital so she can live the rest of her life with him.

Why Did Ben Affleck Quit Playing Batman ( Photo Credit – Facebook )

In another candid (and colorful) interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Affleck opened up about why he hung up the cowl for good—and let’s just say, it wasn’t all Batmobiles and hero poses.
Affleck first jumped into the Batman gig with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, bringing his gruff charm to Gotham. He even gave the role his signature “world-class Boston finesse”. Tim Burtons Batman films altered the trajectory of DC's Dark Knight, leaving an indelible mark on both the character and the superhero genre. Burtons Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) redefined Batman in pop culture, blending darkness with style and exploring the psyche of Gotham Citys heroes and villains. These movies set a precedent of nuanced characterization and distinctive designs that have since permeated the entire Batman franchise, with many becoming essential aspects of the hero and his universe.
Tim Burtons two movies were the first in the initial Batman franchise, which Joel Schumacher later continued with Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997). Burtons first Batman movie was a huge pop culture phenomenon, triggering what is often called Bat-mania or the "Summer of Batman." Batman, and indeed its sequel, had a significant impact on the superhero genre, permanently changing the Batman franchise in comics, movies, television series, and video games.

Ghosts are ubiquitous and zombies have had their moments of dominance, but of all the classic horror monsters, vampires have the strongest claim for the greatest film legacy. The vampire genre is nearly as old as cinema itself, with F.W. Murnau’s “Nosferatu” scaring up audiences in 1922, followed by the countless iterations that came in its shadow. Every era and every filmmaking country has since taken up its own spins on the myth of the vampire, from Universal Studios’ “Dracula” series beginning with Tod Browning’s Bram Stoker adaptation in 1931, all the way up to Iranian-American director Ana Lily Amirpour’s indie feminist twist “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night” in 2014.
2024 has not exactly been a banner time for brilliant takes on the horror genre’s most iconic creatures of the night, with the most notable bloodsucking project to come out this calendar year being the fun but ultra-silly “Abigail.

Warning! Spoilers for DC vs. Vampires: World War V #3!DC's heroes have defeated threat after threat and continually saved the planet, but they can't win all the time, and in one universe, the Bat-Family were slaughtered by the vampire army. The majority of superheroes, like Wonder Woman and Superman, have joined the vampires, but one surprising Bat-Family member could still defeat all of these threats with ease: Bat-Mite.
The one Bat-Family member who could end this bloody war with a wave of his finger was revealed in DC vs. Vampires: World War V #3's backup story "A Hero For These Trying Times" by Tyler Boss, Miquel Muerto, and Becca Carey. Bat-Mite finds his way to Earth, wanting another adventure with his idol Batman, only to discover that the entire planet seems destroyed, with the Batcave empty and Wayne Manor lying in ruins. It's here that Bat-Mite eventually discovers that Batman is dead.

The Vampire is as old to cinema as the horror genre itself is. From the influential expressionism of Nosferatu (1922), the many more direct popular literary adaptations like Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) and the modern romance meshing approach of Thirst (2009), vampires seem to have a long lasting significance in the history of horror. Vampires have even transcended into the worlds of exploitation with cult classics like Blacula (1972) and to parody in lesser cult classics like Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995). The key argument I make with this heavily abridged history of Vampires is that not only does anyone remotely familiar with the concept of horror know what a “classic vampire” is but that what constitutes as a “vampire film” is a loose definition.

If you told somebody just 10 years ago that Sonic the Hedgehog would be part of a successful trilogy and a spin-off show, there's a good chance that person would instantly turn and walk away from you, appalled by your ridiculousness. There are already rumblings about Mr. Freeze being The Batman - Part II's villain due to the sequel's winter setting, so a spin-off revolving around Dr. Victor Fries isn't too outlandish.
DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn was asked about the rumour on Threads and initially only added fuel to the fire with what proved to be a surprisingly vague response from the Superman director.
"I haven’t heard that one but there are a lot of rumors out there this week," he started. "Some of them are true, some are partially true, and some aren't true at all. If it’s fun...

The Dcu's Batman: The Brave and the Bold will be Batman's first chance in a long time to use some famous comic book gadgets that have never made it to a live-action movie. The upcoming movie Batman: The Brave and the Bold will be The Dark Knight's first true appearance in the newly-formed Dcu headed by James Gunn, following the release of Superman: Legacy. Considering how many amazing pieces of tech Batman uses in the comics that have yet to see on-screen representation, this movie will be Batman's chance to show off an updated arsenal.
There are many reasons why some of Batman's coolest gadgets have remained unseen by moviegoers. Whereas the more campy Batman appearances of the late 60s and 90s simply didn't have the budget for a depiction of Batman's more fancy utility belt options, the higher-budget Batman movies like Matt Reeves' The Batman or Christopher Nolan...

Richard Harris played Albus Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter movies until his death forced the studio to recast the role with Michael Gambon. With the upcoming Harry Potter TV series starting the casting process, some fans have thought that Harris’ son, Jared Harris, would make for a good Dumbledore.
During an interview on the The Independent series Go to Bat, Jared Harris was asked if he’d be down to play Dumbledore in the Harry Potter TV series. His response should shut down any more fan casting. “No, thank you,” he said. “Also, I mean, why do it? I don’t understand. The films were fantastic – leave them alone.” Although Harris doesn’t seem keen on the idea of a TV series, he did acknowledge that “a lot of storytelling” was left out of the movie franchise.

Matt Reeves has revealed that he is almost done with the script for The Batman Part II. Fans are speculating who the next antagonist will be for the Bat of Gotham. While they are keen on seeing someone like the Court of Owls in a live-action setting, there is one reason why fans think it might be a bad idea.

The first Batman film with Matt Reeves dealt with a family conspiracy that spanned the deep history of Gotham, heavily concerning the Waynes. Should Matt Reeves’ sequel deal with the Court of Owls, fans are concerned that the plot of the film might be a little repetitive for audiences’ tastes.
