Monsters in films can be heroes, fighting not just physical threats but the evils within humanity itself. Japanese Kaiju films like Godzilla inspired the giant monster genre, with many embodying relatable struggles. The best monster movies show that monsters are often a result of unresolved human issues and can evolve to become heroes.
The unknown is a scary prospect, and most monster movies that feature a gargantuan beast capitalize on that fear, but some subvert that trope and make the monster a hero. Whether it's an otherworldly beast that fights to protect the human race or a human who has found themselves to be the monster, these movies are an important reminder not to judge a book by its cover or a monster by its size. Sometimes, the evil that they fight is other monsters, but the best films pit them against the evils within humanity itself, making the monsters the good guys.

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

Fantasy stories have been around for centuries, finding popularity in books before gracing the big screen. Creating entire universes and building new worlds is no easy feat, leaving only the most talented of writers to attempt writing the next big story. The first fantasy movie dates back to Alice Guy's The Cabbage Fairy, filmed in 1896, but the fantasy movie genre didn't become prominent until after the 1950s.
Between magic, the supernatural, science-fiction, folklore and myths, the world of fantasy films is endless. From large franchises such as The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter to smaller and one-off movies, the 2000s truly revolutionized the genre, especially thanks to the advancements in CGI and VFX technology.

Have you ever dreamed of having your own monster pet? A giant creature fiercely loyal only to you, with the power to face down bullies and maybe even fly you to school and back every day? Everyone’s had this fantasy as a kid, and with Pete’s Dragon opening in theatres this weekend, we’ve been thinking about other movies that explore the special bond between a child and a fantastical pet or creature.
Here are some of our favourites:
The Water Horse
Set in Scotland during WWII, when Angus, a young Scottish boy, finds an enchanted egg on the shores of Loch Ness, he takes it home and soon finds himself face-to-face with an amazing creature: the mythical "water horse" of Scottish lore. But as “Crusoe” begins to grow bigger and bigger,...

Distributed by StudioCanal, the film is a black comedy set during the aftermath of the Cronulla riots.
As Forsythe's second feature, it is the story of two carloads of hotheads from both sides of the fight destined to collide..
Sincere, though misguided, intent gives way to farcical ineptitude as this hilarious yet poignant story of ignorance, fear and kebab-cravings unfolds, and what was meant to be a retaliation mission turns into something neither side could have imagined.

A product of the Disney princess machine. Its highest ambition is to move a new line of toys. Or to evoke despair in the fairy-tale-ization of girls’ lives. I’m “biast” (pro): I’ve enjoyed director Kenneth Branagh’s movies
I’m “biast” (con): I’m so done with princess crap
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
This is how it begins, the fairy-tale-ization of little girls’ lives. Make sure to get ’em while they’re young, and tell ’em: You don’t need any discernible personality or interest in the world to be successful as a lady. Just “be kind,” even to the point of being a doormat; for god’s sake, don’t make waves or complain, just endure whatever abuse the world throws at you even if you could easily walk away from it. As a reward, eventually, luck and magic will...

"Okay, just to be clear here, our options are: die here, die in the tunnels, or die in the streets. That pretty much it?" — Hud, Cloverfield
The heyday of giant monster movies has long since passed into Hollywood history, but if the enthusiasm of the crowd in attendance at Legendary/Warner's (L/W) presentation for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim at this past weekend's WonderCon convention in Anaheim is any indication, the sci-fi sub-genre could be poised for a comeback. L/W is so confident that audiences are ready to embrace giant monsters that they've already ordered up a sequel, and Frank Darabont (The Mist, The Walking Dead) is working on a Godzilla update that he promises will take the "camp" out of the Japanese icon and deliver a Godzilla that is a "terrifying force of nature."

New York — A producing team has won the theatrical stage rights to "Rear Window," the noir tale that Alfred Hitchcock made into a classic film.
Producer Charlie Lyons, director Jay Russell and actor Tim Guinee announced Wednesday that their two-year hunt for the rights have been successful and they're hoping to mount the show on Broadway.
"Rear Window" is based on a Cornell Woolrich short story, "It Had to Be Murder," that was first published in February 1942 in Dime Detective Magazine.
The 1954 film version, starring Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly, tells the story of a wheelchair-bound witness to a possible murder.
Literary agent Sheldon Abend in 1971 purchased a copyright to the short story on which "Rear Window" was based. The new producing team bought the first stage option ever granted by Abend's trust.
Lyons has produced such films as "The Water Horse," "The Guardian" and "Ladder 49." Russell directed "Ladder 49" and "My Dog Skip.

Update: A year after announcing Real Steel director Shawn Levy would be directing Max Landis' (Chronicle) take on Frankenstein, 20th Century Fox and Davis Entertainment are now announcing Paul McGuigan (Push, Lucky Number Slevin) will helm instead. Fox's vision of the project, which is said to focus on themes of friendship and redemption, was a low-budget picture; Levy wanted to make a big budget spectacle.
Sept. 2, 2011 - 20th Century Fox is taking one big lumbering step forward on its Frankenstein movie, one of Nine that are currently in development, by hiring Night at the Museum director-producer Shawn Levy. Fox's project is a sci-fi take written by Max Landis that is said to focus on themes of friendship and redemption. Levy specializes in comedies (Date Night, Pink Panther, Cheaper by the Dozen) but steps out into a sci-fi drama with October's Real Steel starring Hugh Jackman.

Last month, it was officially announced that David Morrissey had been cast as The Governor in The Walking Dead Season 3. Fans of Doctor Who and those that watch British television regularly should instantly recognize Morrissey, but for those who are unfamiliar with him, we have a recent video spot where he talks about joining the cast and knowing Andrew Lincoln.
“…David Morrissey has been cast in the role of The Governor in the networks’ critically acclaimed hit series, ‘The Walking Dead.’ The Governor, a character from Robert Kirkman’s graphic novel, is the leader of Woodbury, a small settlement of survivors, and becomes the chief antagonist for Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his group.
The Governor will appear in ‘The Walking Dead’ season three, a 16-episode order from AMC, which begins production this spring in Atlanta.

The executive producers of AMC’s The Walking Dead have always been a bit cagey about if and when they would be including the comic series character known as “The Governor.” Today, however, AMC announced that The Governor will be a part of season 3, and the person to play him will be brilliant British actor David Morrissey, best known to Doctor Who fans as the guest star of the Christmas special “The Next Doctor.” Here are the details:

At long last and after months of rumors and speculation, the iconic character known as ‘The Governor’ has been cast. Since AMC first began an adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s zombie series The Walking Dead in 2010, fans have been anxious to see not only when the character will appear but who will be portraying the vicious leader who rules a group of civilians with an iron fist (and later an eye patch). AMC has now announced that David Morrissey will play the upcoming villain in Season 3 of the hit show.
I come from the standpoint of being a reader of the comics and a fan of the show. Without giving away much about the character, I will say that ‘The Governor’ is an interesting character for a lot of reasons. Yes, he’s cruel, violent, dangerous, and badass – all of the attributes of a great villain. However he also represents...

2012 is an election year and AMC’s The Walking Dead has found its Governor. David Morrissey has been cast as the major recurring role of The Governor for Season 3. Since we do not know how he will be written into the series, we cannot label him immediately as a villain, but he is one of the major villains of comics. It’s best not to assume anything with this TV series. This also means that Michael Rooker, who plays Merle, will once and for all Not be the Governor as so many have surmised after his story played out in Season 1.
Morrissey is a well-known TV actor in England, appearing in several British series including: Blackpool (2004), State of Play (2003), and The Meadowlands (2007). He can also be seen in starring roles in the feature films, The Reaping (2007), The Other Boleyn Girl (2008), Centurion (2010), Hilarie and Jackie (1998), The Water Horse (2007) and Blitz (2011).

Earlier this year, we chatted with horror legend Tom Savini, who revealed that he was actively campaigning for the role of The Governor on The Walking Dead Season 3. AMC wanted Academy Award-nominate actor John Hawkes, who declined the role.
It looks as though Tom Savini wasn't their ideal replacement. They have now officially cast the coveted and all-important role of The Governor, announcing today that David Morrissey (best known in the states for his roles in movies such as Blitz and Centurion) has won the part.
Here is the official press release:

Several attempts have been made to bring the story of the tragic sinking of the USS Indianapolis to cinemas. Here, Ti charts their often abortive progress…

The tragedy of the USS Indianapolis was famously recounted by Robert Shaw’s Quint in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, when he told the horrific tale of how the Us Navy ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in July 1945.
The USS Indianapolis had just delivered a highly secret cargo to Tinian island. Only a few members of the crew even knew it was a new, powerful weapon, and no one knew it would later be dropped on Hiroshima. On the ship’s return journey,...

"Wizards of Waverly Place" star David Henrie and Kevin James (Zookeeper) usually make us laugh but it sounds like they'll be making us cry soon in the family drama Little Boy. The movie is about an 8-year old (played by newcomer Jakob Salvati) with developmental issues whose only friend is his dad (James). When his dad has to leave to fight in World War II, the boy has to deal with vicious teasing and bullying from his classmates. Emily Watkins and Ben Chaplin, both of whom starred in The Water Horse, have also signed on for starring roles.
The film is set in "small-town America" but is being shot in Baja California and locations in Mexico. Toronto Film Festival prize winner Alejandro Monteverde is directing.

Years after the child star's expected DUI charge, Haley Joel Osment is returning back to the genre that gave him his biggest boost of all---horror. Osment is starring in the upcoming film Wake the Dead, based on graphic novel of the same name, because obviously no one can get enough comic book graphic novel adaptions. Osment plays Victor Franklin, one of two med students who are on a mission to bring the dead back to life. If you're keeping track, I believe this makes the 4th** Frankenstein adaption soon to be released.
Haley Joel Osment is 23 years old now. Can you believe it? I must say I am strangely curious to see how his acting has carried over from his wild college days into now. In fact, I always grow a little worried on the inside when I hear that a child star is making his comeback into acting, because...

The first of nine Frankenstein movies in the works is starting to be sewn together. Wake the Dead has cast The Sixth Sense actor Haley Joel Osment playing Victor Franklin, a college student fascinated with bringing people back from death. The Water Horse director Jay Russell will helm from a script he co-wrote. It's based on the graphic novel from Steven Niles and sets the Frankenstein story in the present day. Guns 'n' Roses guitarist Slash is producing. Production starts in the fall.
Here are the other Frankenstein projects in development:
* 20th Century Fox has hired Max Landis to write a script and has major directors like Paul Greengrass and David Yates under consideration;
* Indie Frankenstein's Army takes place at the end of World War II. Russian soldiers find Dr. Frankenstein's journal in a top secret Nazi laboratory. They use the notes to build an army by sewing together...

Best known for his chilling Oscar nominated role as a small child in The Sixth Sense, the young actor returns from his educational hiatus to star in an adaption of Steve Niles' Idw comic series retelling the classic tale of Frankenstein in modern times. The graphic novel follows the exploits of a young college student Victor in his experiments to reversing death. Like Mary Shelley's Gothic cautionary tale, this leads to severe consequences for his affront upon nature and the monster he creates. Jay Russell (Ladder 49, The Water Horse) will helm the project that he and Jim Hart (Dracula) adapted from the original work. Legendary Guns n' Roses guitarist Slash is producing through his Slasher Films with Michael Williams and Rob Eric. Shaun Redick and Ray Mansfield are on to executive...

Where in the world was Haley Joel Osment? After some stunning work as a child actor in The Sixth Sense and A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, the child actor seemingly disappeared from Hollywood.
Well, Variety is reporting that he’ll be back in Wake the Dead, a modern twist to the Frankenstein story – as if there hasn’t been enough already – for director Jay Russell from The Water Horse, which is based on the Steve Niles’ comic. The gist of the story is Osment will play Victor Franklin, a college student who experiments with raising the dead.
Says Niles of the adaptation: “We want to recapture the quality of horror like they made them in the ’70s, horror where you care about the characters and story. With Wake the Dead, Jay Russell, Slash and I hope to make a horror movie that sticks with you long after you’ve seen it.”

Brendan Fraser will star in comedic heist picture Whole Lotta Sole, for director Terry George and produced by Jay Russell.
Terry George also wrote the script with Thomas Gallagher, and the plot centers on a young man getting himself into hot water when he tries to rob a fish shop in order to pay off a gambling debt. The heist goes terribly and humorously — the shopkeeper (Fraser) has his own issues, since he’s on the run from his gangster father-in-law. And when the situation quickly gets worse into a hostage situation, that’s when the comedy cranks up. In any case, that’s the plan.
Fraser had a rough 2010 with Extraordinary Measures and Furry Vengeance. Gods and Monsters (1998) proved he can act if he wants to, so maybe we’ll get to see some of that talent again with this comedy. He will next be seen in the rom-com Crazy,...
