Hollywood is a marketing game, which means that public images of actors and other creatives are paramount. Morality clauses are an integral part of any contract that is signed between production companies and actors, giving the company (and the industry) the right to remove the actor and disengage with them.

A lot of times, this is leveled at A-list actors, whose fall from grace is quick and decisive, but more often than not, it also plagues actors who are on the path to becoming big names in Hollywood. When they do get canceled, they are all over the news for a few short months and then disappear off of the face of the earth. When reality is stranger than fiction, Hollywood takes notice - these films prove it.
I caught “Last Breath” in theaters this weekend, and wow - what a ride. Beautifully shot, intense, and suspenseful - and incredibly, it’s all based on a true story. It follows a deep-sea diver who gets stranded 300 feet below the ocean with only minutes of air left… and the rescue mission to try and save his life. After the movie, I got to thinking about other great scripted movies that have associated documentaries. There are some incredible films out there that take real-life stories and turn them into gripping, cinematic experiences. So, here are my top 7 favorite scripted movies inspired by true-story documentaries.

Justin Lin is no stranger to making movies built around spectacle. After all, he directed more Fast & Furious movies than any director working today before stepping away from the franchise (twice). He returns to something much smaller scale after his “Fast X” exit with “Last Days,” a narrative feature based on the true story of American missionary John Allen Chau, who visited and was killed by the isolated Indigenous Sentinelese people on their island off the coast of India after he tried to convert them. While this project seems like it could provide a fresh start for Lin and a return to his roots — he launched his career at Sundance with the indie drama “Better Luck Tomorrow” — it ultimately falls flat.
Unfortunately, instead of using the opportunity to offer up a nuanced, more incisive portrait of the man beyond the headlines, “Last Days” is a film that is so contrived,...

Vampires, werewolves, witches, and the Devil himself — The Vampire Diaries had it all. However, the main attraction of the CW show was the scintillating romance. Elena, Stefan, and Damon's supernatural love triangle was full of passion, angst, and excitement, giving rise to some of the most romantic quotes of all time.
Impassioned relationships were a mainstay in The Vampire Diaries, beyond even the fabled love triangle between the Salvatores and Elena. Even the show's antagonists fell in love hard, and when they did, they had the most touching missives about the emotion. These proclamations were intimate, emotional, and grand at the same time and made audiences believe in love once again.

There are a lot of terrific road trip movies out there. Crossroads, Into the Wild, Little Miss Sunshine, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert — the list goes on and on. But in the Top 10 of iconic movies centered around tough lessons and unbreakable bonds being formed while rolling down the highway, Ridley Scott’s 1991 feature, Thelma & Louise is certainly at the top. Starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis, you simply can’t get two better actresses to headline a movie about sisterhood and sticking it to the patriarchy. But, with supporting work from Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Christopher McDonald, and Brad Pitt in one of his career-making movies, the film has solidified itself as a classic now more than three decades since its release (we are all old). Right now, you’ll want to put the pedal to the metal to catch the classic on Prime Video...

One of the best performances of Kristen Stewart's career is coming to Netflix next month. Though her breakout roles came in David Fincher's Panic Room, Zathura: A Space Adventure, and Into the Wild, Stewart has been synonymous with Bella Swan and The Twilight Saga for much of her career, starring in the five franchise films from 2008 to 2012. In those five films, Stewart's performance as Bella was widely panned, which led to her being unfairly labeled as an emotionless actress.
After starring in another big-budget production, 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman, Stewart shifted her focus to indie projects and, just like her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson, reinvented herself as an actor. During the remainder of the 2010s, Stewart starred in the dramas Camp X-Ray, Still Alice, and Equals, but began garnering critical acclaim for her collaborations with director Olivier Assayas in Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper.

Tracker has experienced much success in 2024, but its most-watched episode in its two seasons may surprise fans. The CBS action drama TV series, created by Ben H. Winters, is based on Jeffery Deaver's 2019 novel The Never Game, following Colter Shaw. Colter is an expert survivalist who uses his tracking skills to (usually) find people in exchange for money as a rewardist. However, Colter's complicated past also often comes back to haunt him in Tracker.
Tracker season 2 returns with episode 9 on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at 8 pm Et on CBS. While waiting, fans can catch up on all the show's aired episodes on Paramount+.
Throughout the 20-plus episodes of Tracker, Colter has solved many mysteries and faced several dangers. From finding a missing prized racehorse to continuously trying and failing to learn the truth behind his father's death, Hartley's character has experienced a lot in the CBS action drama series. Sean Penn, the Oscar-winning star of Mystic River, Milk, and Dead Man Walking, has decided to play some hardball before awards season officially begins. The outspoken actor had some choice words for the Academy and Hollywood, the latter of which he called "afraid" of acknowledging the Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice.
Penn appeared at the Marrakech Film Festival where he received an honorary award for his decades-long career. Per Variety, Penn used the opportunity to slam the Academy for looking down on Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice, a film about Trump’s relationship with Roy Cohn during his early years as a real estate mogul in New York City. At first, Penn blasted the organization for having such biased criteria:
“The Academy have exercised really extraordinary cowardice when it comes to being part of the bigger world of expression, and in fact, have largely been part of limiting the imagination...

No other show did romance quite like The Vampire Diaries. While the show thrived on its fantasy elements like supernatural characters, magic, and plenty of lore, the chemistry between all of its leads was electrifying. Without a doubt, it was one of the main appeals of the show, as couples like Damon and Elena, Klaus and Caroline, and Elena and Stefan shared some steamy moments on screen.
Tvd used the slow burn very effectively in nearly all of its relationships, which is why the steamy scenes were all the more satisfying to watch. The buildup between its most popular couples was ramped up over several episodes, if not seasons, which made them giving in to their feelings gratifying to watch. These were the steamiest The Vampire Diaries scenes ever.

Alongside Kevin James, the cast of the 2011 comedy, Zookeeper, sees many high-profile celebrities help make it a memorable fantasy movie as they voice several of its anthropomorphic animals. James stars as the titular hero, who is considering a career switch as he feels thats the only way he can improve his chances at finding love. The news comes as a shock to his animal friends, and the zoo creatures try and set him up with someone else to convince him to stay. Zookeeper didnt fare well with most critics but is still worth a watch for family-friendly comedy fans.
What is worth noting about the Zookeeper cast is the stellar voice cast behind the animals and the actual animals themselves. The movie features some iconic animal performers, like Crystal the Monkey who provides the physical likeness for the tufted capuchin Donald, and the late Bart the Bear 2 who plays the grizzly bear Jerome.

Hulu’s adaptation of Little Fires Everywhere premiered at the very beginning of the 2020 Covid lockdown, and although it was nominated for several big Emmys that fall, the miniseries has become very fuzzy in my memory. One thing I do remember, however, is that in selecting the daughters of Reese Witherspoon’s character, the casting team found a pair of young actresses — Jade Pettyjohn and Megan Stott — who absolutely bore an uncanny resemblance to Reese Witherspoon.
Actually, I’d forgotten even that detail before sitting down to watch the new Netflix drama Penelope and immediately recognizing Stott — in large part because, if you’re going to make what is essentially an eight-part YA version of Wild, selecting a certifiable Reese Witherspoon doppelgänger as your lead makes a lot of sense.
Presumably, it isn’t wholly a coincidence. Penelope was created by Mark Duplass, who co-stars with Witherspoon on The Morning Show,...

Would you gain 100 pounds in the hopes of landing a role?

But another film — a planned biopic of comedian John Belushi, in which Hirsch was chosen to play the early Saturday Night Live star — came up in conversation.
In 2013, Hirsch became attached to the lead role in the indie biopic. The funding never came together, and the project fell apart.

Using an unreliable narrator is an interesting storytelling technique. It invites viewers to question what's already registered as "the truth" and find out about what's really happening. Films with changeable realities are also very fun to watch. There are a few that completely fool the audience, planting hints until a big revelation at the end makes sense of everything.
Films with unreliable narrators are best for rewatching. Many of them have become cult classics for this very reason. From the famous Fight Club, where the protagonist and antagonist end up being someone familiar and unfamiliar, to Gone Girl, a film that evokes terror in daily life, unreliable narrators often weave horror and mental health into the plot.

Two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn has excelled in a number of fields, including acting, writing and directing. But it’s his career as a performer that has brought him the most acclaim. Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films as an actor, ranked worst to best.
Penn entered the Oscar race for the first time with his performance as a death row inmate in Tim Robbins’s “Dead Man Walking” (1995), for which he competed in Best Actor. Subsequent lead nominations as a jazz guitarist in Woody Allen’s “Sweet and Lowdown” (1999) and a mentally handicapped father in “I Am Sam” (2001) quickly followed.
He hit the Oscar jackpot with Clint Eastwood’s “Mystic River” (2003), which cast him as a criminal grieving the murder of his daughter. Just five years later, he returned to the winner’s circle with his lead role in “Milk” (2008), Gus Van Sant’s...

Emile Hirsch boldly claims Speed Racer is better than The Matrix. Fans are divided over the debate between the two iconic sci-fi movies. Speed Racer has gained a cult following despite initial flop in 2008.
Actor Emile Hirsch has made a bold claim about the position of Speed Racer on the science-fiction podium, proclaiming it to be better than The Matrix. Speed Racer, directed by the Wachoswki sisters, has found a second life in the age of streaming and developed a cult-following among contemporary audiences. Based on the 1967 anime of the same name, the film stars Hirsch as the titular Speed Racer as he enters The Crucible, a deadly car rally with a massive cash prize.
Hirsch took to X/Twitter to voice his divisive opinion about the Wachowskis' racing movie. The Wachoswki sisters also directed The Matrix trilogy, with the first film constantly being hailed as one of the greatest science fiction movies of all-time.

Sean Penn rarely grants interviews — he and the press haven’t always gotten along, to say the least — but last week, at his home in Malibu, the venerated actor and filmmaker sat down with The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast for an in-depth conversation about his life, career and most recent project, Daddio, an indie, released last Friday, of which he is particularly proud.
Seated in a small, light-filled room that he recently re-designed himself, the walls of which are covered with photos of his late parents, his two children and himself alongside many of world figures he has encountered in his travels as an activist, Penn, sporting a shock of white hair, puffed on cigarettes, spoke softly and was far warmer than his reputation would suggest he’d be. In the early moments of the 2007 movie Into the Wild, Emile Hirsch, in the role of 24-year-old adventurer Christopher McCandless, is walking alone in knee-deep snow when he stumbles upon an astounding sight, what McCandless would come to call “the magic bus.” The rusty, green-and-white Fairbanks City Transit System bus, abandoned in a remote area of central Alaska, would become McCandless’ makeshift shelter in the wilderness for over 100 days, the site of his death by starvation in the summer of 1992 and, eventually, a dangerous destination for hikers looking to replicate McCandless’ journey.
Today the bus, which became a global symbol of restless travelers in the wake of Jon Krakauer’s best-selling 1996 book about McCandless and the subsequent Sean Penn-directed movie, is no longer in the backcountry. In June of 2020, for reasons of public safety, the state of Alaska lifted the 1946 International Harvester K-5 out of the wild with a...

Two works from the early queer literary canon will see audiobook release this June, narrated by actor Emile Hirsch.
Both were authored by Fritz Peters, an overlooked trailblazer in the 1950s who wrote frank and intimate depictions of homosexuality, spirituality and mental health struggles. The books are the novel “Finistère” and the memoir “Boyhood With Gurdjieff,” hitting audio platforms in time for global pride celebrations.
The recordings mark Hirsch’s first in the space, save voicing a character in “Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans,” the animated film from Guillermo del Toro. Known for films like “Into the Wild” and “Milk,” he will next appear in the holocaust film “‘Bau, Artist at War.”
Despite selling big in his time, Peters’ catalogue had fallen into relative obscurity compared to literati peers like Gore Vidal, Henry Miller and Eudora Welty. Production company Hirsch Giovanni acquired the author’s complete works two years ago and serve as re-release publishers.

If you watch enough television, you're bound to recognize an array of character actors who appear on a few of your favorite shows at any given time. These delightful additions often help fill out the larger world that runs beyond the 40-ish minutes we're privy to, and can help make a plot more meaningful or deadly. In the case of the hit CBS series Tracker, Justin Hartley's Colter Shaw recently had a run-in with a dangerous mob enforcer in the Season 1 episode "Into the Wild." Played by Fargo and American Gods actor Peter Stormare, this Las Vegas native has a penchant for violence and doesn't leave behind any survivors if he can help it. If that all feels familiar, then you might also recognize Stormare's character Chance Gilbert from the hit A&e-turned-Netflix neo-Western Longmire, where he terrorized the people of Wyoming with his extremist political beliefs.

Kristen Stewart returns to the vampire genre with "Flesh of the Gods". "Flesh of the Gods" sets a new tone with seductive and intriguing vampires, contrasting the laughable Twilight vampires. The movie's release may benefit from comparisons to Twilight, offering Stewart a chance to shine in a new light.
Kristen Stewart is going back to the vampire genre with a new movie that sounds like the perfect anti-Twilight needed in 2024. Kristen Stewarts acting career began in the early 2000s, and the role that got her wide recognition was Sarah Altman in David Finchers Panic Room, alongside Jodie Foster. After appearing in movies like Zathura: A Space Adventure, The Messengers, Into the Wild, and Jumper, Stewart's big break arrived in 2008 when she was cast as Bella Swan in the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyers debut novel Twilight.

Emile Hirsch has had one of the more interesting careers of the many talented heartthrobs who arose at the turn of the millennium, and he's outlasted most of them. It's been two decades since his very good teen sex comedy, The Girl Next Door, and about 15 years since he won vast acclaim for Into the Wild, which kicked off an run of big films with great directors — Milk (Gus Vant Sant), Speed Racer (the Wachowski sisters), Taking Woodstock (Ang Lee), Killer Joe (William Friedkin), Savages (Oliver Stone), and Prince Avalanche (David Gordon Green) among them.
These days, four or five films are released with Emile Hirsch every single year; in fact, two of them came out on the same day: Prey and State of Consciousness. "We shot it almost three years ago. So I'm prolific, but this one did kind of get bottlenecked with another release," explained Hirsch about State of Consciousness.

Mexican supervising sound editor Martín Hernández, who was Oscar-nominated for Best Sound Editing for Birdman and The Revenant in 2014 and 2015 respectively, says the category is wide open this year due to the variety of movies in the running.
Features nominated in the category span The Zone of Interest, Oppenheimer and Maestro as well as surprise short list entries The Creator and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.
“Isn’t that unfair? I mean, they’re so different and the work in every one of them is equally good. That’s gonna be tough,” Hernández told Deadline in a one-on-one at the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra event in Qatar this week.
Hernández, who has been a voting member of the Academy since 2015, refrained from saying anything else about the films in the running for the Best Sound trophy on Sunday for fear of breaking the org’s rules for voters.

You wanna get nuts? C’mon, let’s get nuts. Through no fault of his own, Michael Keaton’s fun, nostalgic return as Batman had imploded when The Flash would debut to disaster and his follow-up in Batgirl would equally become infamous by getting shelved and locked away. Keaton is bouncing back in a big way with his second directorial effort, Knox Goes Away. Keaton’s directorial debut came in 2008 with the crime thriller, The Merry Gentleman. The trailer for Knox Goes Away has dropped courtesy of Saban Films and features a quote from our own Chris Bumbray, which was also featured on the poster, which says Keaton gives “A career-best performance.”
Knox Goes Away revolves around a contract killer who, after being diagnosed with a fast-moving form of dementia, is presented with the opportunity to redeem himself by saving the life of his estranged adult son. But to do so,...

In 2007, director Sean Penn released his passion project film Into the Wild, well... into the wild. Based on the nonfiction book of the same name by the great writer Jon Krakauer (Under the Banner of Heaven), it recounted the story of the troubled young Christopher McCandless as he cuts ties with the life he had known up until then to set off on his own. The film and the story have resonated with those feeling a similar sense of unease about the trajectory of their lives and the world writ large. It is the type of uncertainty that transcends generations and may have found its successor in another — only this time, her name is Penelope. Though we’ve only just got to know Penelope in the pilot episode that bears her name, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, there is already a sense that she is going places.

Shortly after Warner Bros. Pictures summoned the official title and release date for Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice sequel, in which Michael Keaton returns as the Ghost with the Most, the release date for Keaton’s Knox Goes Away is here! The thriller marks Keaton’s second time as the director of a feature-length film. He also stars in the project opposite Al Pacino, James Marsden, and Marcia Gay Harden, with Ray McKinnon, Suzy Nakamura, Lela Loren, Dennis Dugan, Jonna Kulig, and more. Saban Films has set a release date of March 15 for Knox Goes Away after the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year.
