Canadians taking ani far, wide
TORONTO -- Riding a rebound in animated series demand worldwide, Canadian producers are lining up a slew of cartoon characters for multiplatform treatment as branded consumer franchises. "We're definitely getting to the next level as a company exploiting brands," Charles Falzon, co-chairman of Toronto-based Cambium Catalyst International, says as he readies a fall consumer products campaign for the Cartoon Network (U.S.) breakout series Harry and His Bucket Full of Dinosaurs, including DVDs from Warner Bros. Consumer Products. Falzon, president of British animation studio Gullane Entertainment until its takeover by rival HIT Entertainment in 2002, says the Canadian-British co-production is aimed at the preschool "dino-play" market. Harry and His Bucket Full of Dinosaurs is also prelicensed to the U.K.'s Five channel and Disney UK, Super RTL in Germany and France 5.
