Top 10 Disappointing Films Of 2015
2015 offered some terrific films for audiences – The Martian, Creed, Straight Outta Compton, Brooklyn and Star Wars: The Force Awakens to name a few. They were huge crowd-pleasers and very successful at the box office. But not every movie connected with audiences this past year, as much as we wanted them to.

Wamg takes a look at the past 12 months and the movies that we really wanted to love, but just couldn’t. Here we go with our Top 10 list of the Most Disappointing Films of 2015.

Dishonorable Mention: Seventh Son

It’s hard to decipher exactly what Jeff Bridges is saying under his accent that sounds like a cross between Gandalf and Bane from The Dark Knight Rises. And that is only one of the many problems with this film. Seventh Son is nothing but hallow, visual clutter that is cobbled together to form something that struggles to appeal to the...

No Fear: The Year’S Best Movies
This is definitely the time of year when film critic types (I’m sure you know who I mean) spend an inordinate amount of time leading up to awards season—and it all leads up to awards season, don’t it?—compiling lists and trying to convince anyone who will listen that it was a shitty year at the movies for anyone who liked something other than what they saw and liked. And ‘tis the season, or at least ‘thas (?) been in the recent past, for that most beloved of academic parlor games, bemoaning the death of cinema, which, if the sackcloth-and-ashes-clad among us are to be believed, is an increasingly detached and irrelevant art form in the process of being smothered under the wet, steaming blanket of American blockbuster-it is. And it’s going all malnourished from the siphoning off of all the talent back to TV, which, as everyone knows,...

Why Did 'In the Heart of the Sea' Sink at the Box Office?
On paper, "In the Heart of the Sea" may have looked like a no-brainer: an IMAX-scale adventure epic, made by an A-list director and starring the guy who plays Thor. Plus, it had the weekend all to itself, with no new wide-release competition.

So why did "Sea" sink like a stone at the multiplex? Ron Howard's $100 million film opened in second place, behind the four-week-old "Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 2," earning just $11.0 million, according to Sunday estimates. That's at the low end of what was predicted, though few expected it to do better than $15 million anyway.

Looking back, it should have been obvious why the whaling-ship saga would flounder, though there were also some late-breaking problems that the film's producers and distributors might not have anticipated. For instance:

1. The Director

Howard's had an enviable career, filled with critical and commercial smashes. But aside from the two movies he adapted...

"Heart of the Sea" Fizzles At Box-Office
Ron Howard's period epic "In the Heart of the Sea" fizzled at the box office this weekend, opening to a mere $11 million in second place behind the fourth weekend of returning champ "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2".

Boasting a $100 million production budget, the seafaring epic can't rely on overseas to save its bacon either as the film opened already in several markets last week and in a further 52 countries this weekend to just $12.6 million - the global total so far being $50.4 million. Demographic breakdowns show that barely anyone under the age of 25 and a lot under the age of 50 had little interest in the film.

It's not a good result for either Howard of Chris Hemsworth. Their previous collaboration, the much better received "Rush," opened to just $10 million two years ago but cost a mere $38 million and ended up with $90 million. Outside the Marvel films, Hemsworth can't...

Amal Clooney at an event for 72nd Golden Globe Awards (2015)
Amal Clooney brought her mother, Baria Alamuddin, to the launch of makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury's new flagship beauty boutique in the Covent Garden district of London on Thursday. The event, called Charlotte's Naughty Christmas Party, also brought out Salma Hayek, Kate Bosworth, Kate Moss's younger sister, Lottie, and Charlotte's own stunning mother, Patsy. Amal showed off her standout style in a metallic crop top with matching pants and posed for photos with her look-alike mom during the soiree. We last got a glimpse of Amal in October when she supported her husband, George, at the premiere of his film Our Brand Is Crisis in La. Not long after their red carpet appearance, news broke that the couple had expanded their family; George and Amal adopted a rescue dog named Millie from the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society in California. Oscar Best Actor race: Johnny Depp jumps ahead of Leonardo DiCaprio, Eddie Redmayne
Kevin Bacon, Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Dakota Johnson, Jesse Plemons, Peter Sarsgaard, Corey Stoll, and Benedict Cumberbatch in Strictly Criminal (2015)
Johnny Depp ("Black Mass") just picked up the support of another of our 17 Oscar Experts and with five votes, he now leads the Best Actor race over last year's champ Eddie Redmayne ("The Danish Girl") with four, and one-time frontrunner Leonardo DiCaprio ("The Revenant") who is down to three. Follow the blue line on the chart above to see the steady rise of Depp, a three-time Best Actor also-ran, who has leading odds of 4/1 to finally prevail. Redmayne and DiCaprio are tied at 9/2 because of where those of us not predicting them to win are ranking them relative to each other.  -Break- Tiff calendar of Oscar contenders: 'I Saw the Light,' 'Our Brand is Crisis,' 'The Martian,' 'Sicario' ... Sandra Bullock looks like a contender in the Trailer for “Our Brand is Crisis”
Yesterday, a Trailer dropped for Our Brand is Crisis, the political drama/satire hybrid that I’ve been predicting for Oscar attention all year. With it, we got our first real look at a film that could certainly liven up the impending awards season. David Gordon Green’s movie is getting a premiere shortly at the 2015 Toronto Film Festival, and assuming reviews are strong, this will quickly become more than just a Sandra Bullock vehicle, but a legitimate Academy Award contender as well. We’ll know soon enough, but this very solid Trailer is a hint that this is something to be excited about, especially if you’re looking for another contender to enter the race. Here’s a quick refresher on the movie. Basically, it’s based on the documentary of the same name (Our Brand Is Crisis, of course), which focused on the use of American political campaign strategies in South American elections.

Toronto Preview: Oscar Contender Overload, But Drought of Hot Sales Titles
Our Brand Is Crisis (2005)
The Toronto International Film Festival kicks off on Thursday, doubling as a launchpad for legit Oscar hopefuls and would-be contenders as well as an acquisitions market for finished films and those in the all-too-delicate packaging stage. After changing its screening policy regarding rival fall festivals such as Venice and Telluride, Tiff is offering an embarrassment of awards-season riches with films such as “The Martian,” “Freeheld,” “Stonewall,” “Trumbo” “Truth” and “Our Brand Is Crisis,” as well as recent festival favorites including “Black Mass,” “Spotlight,” “The Danish Girl,” “Suffragette,” “Beasts of No Nation,” “Brooklyn,” “Sicario” and foreign language contender “Son of Saul.

Sandra Bullock And Billy Bob Thornton Star In Our Brand Is Crisis Trailer
Here’s your first look at the brand new trailer for director David Gordon Green’s Our Brand Is Crisis, starring Oscar winners Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) and Billy Bob Thornton (Sling Blade).

The film will debut this coming weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival and then in theaters on October 30th.

In the film, a Bolivian presidential candidate failing badly in the polls enlists the firepower of an elite American management team, led by the deeply damaged but still brilliant strategist “Calamity” Jane Bodine (Bullock). In self-imposed retirement following a scandal that earned her nickname and rocked her to her core, Jane is coaxed back into the game for the chance to beat her professional nemesis, the loathsome Pat Candy (Thornton), now coaching the opposition.

But as Candy zeroes in on every vulnerability – both on and off the campaign trail – Jane is plunged into a personal crisis...

Our Brand Is Crisis Trailer May Overemphasize Non-Satirical Spin Of Allegedly Satirical Film
The upcoming David Gordon Green film Our Brand Is Crisis wants desperately to have the word “satire” associated with it, but the trailer doesn’t offer us up a satire (in fact or theory), and it hasn’t gone far to offer up something worth watching either.

While I’m no fan of Sandra Bullock, I suspect this is largely a result of a trailer that simply isn’t put together well, an odd note considering the subject of the film, because David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express, Prince Avalanche, Joe) can put together a film, and Peter Straughan (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Wolf Hall) can certainly write amazing screenplays.

The film’s synopsis describes it as “laced with satire,” which, quite frankly, is a turn of phrase that makes it hard to imagine exactly what you have in mind, and more broadly, the trailer seems to be shooting for a path of least resistance.

First Trailer For Our Brand Is Crisis
Sandra Bullock
The last time Sandra Bullock collaborated with George Clooney, they were up in space for Gravity. For Our Brand Is Crisis, Clooney’s staying behind the camera as a producer, and Bullock starring as a political strategist brought in to help a flailing South American campaign. Check out the first trailer below. Bullock stars as “Calamity” Jane Bodine, a smart, savvy strategist who is nevertheless reeling from a scandal that gave her the nickname and shook her confidence. She’s offered the chance at a comeback by working on the campaign for Bolivian presidential candidate Pedro Gallo (Joaquim de Almeida), who is flagging in the polls, seen as out of touch and elitist. But when Jane arrives in the country, she discovers that her professional nemesis, Pat Candy (Billy Bob Thornton) is coaching the opposition. That, though, just gives her the fire to keep going and try to beat him at last.

Oscar winners Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) and Billy Bob Thornton (Sling Blade) offer a glimpse inside the high-powered world of the political campaign trail in the first trailer and poster for Warner Bros.' Sandra Bullock Aims For Political Victory In First Trailer For Our Brand Is Crisis
Warner Bros.’ political drama Our Brand Is Crisis displayed early signs of its awards aspirations late last year as the A-list names continued to roll in. From its production team – George Clooney and Grant Heslovs’s Smokehouse Pictures – to the balanced ensemble of big-hitters and character actors, the Oscar-friendly evidence began to accumulate. And while you shouldn’t judge a film on its boilerplate, you can make a reasonable assessment based on its trailer: which we now have for you above.

Based on Rachel Boynton’s 2005 documentary, Our Brand Is Crisis stars Sandra Bullock as political strategist Jane Bodine, who’s lured away from the Us to aid a struggling candidate in the Bolivian presidential campaign. Having to contend with turning her client into a sympathetic public figure is the least of her worries, as her former nemesis Pat Candy (Billy Bob Thornton) is her opposition.

Both leads demonstrate their...

'Mad Max: Fury Road' Beats Arthouse Faves For Fipresci Grand Prix
While Warner Bros. has "Black Mass," "Our Brand Is Crisis," and "Creed" on their awards season slate, it must be noted that if they haven't been figuring out a game plan for "Mad Max: Fury Road," maybe now is the time. Critics and audiences have been vocal supporters of the picture, but now it has added a film festival laurel to it shelf. George Miller's movie has won the Fipresci Grand Prix award which will be presented to the director at The San Sebastian Film Festival. The wall-to-wall action movie beat out heavy hitters including László Nemes’ "Son Of Saul" which picked up four awards at Cannes, Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Cannes Best Director winner "The Assassin," and Jafar Panahi’s "Taxi." That is not an easy crowd to compete against and it's a rather remarkable achievement. “You could have knocked me over with a feather! It’s lovely...

Christopher Landon at an event for Burning Palms (2010)
What starts out as an uneventful night for three Boy Scouts turns into a fight for survival in the first red band trailer and poster for Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. “Our Brand is Crisis” starring Sandra Bullock could be an Oscar season X factor
For a while now, I’ve been including Our Brand is Crisis high up in my predictions, perhaps to the confusion of some. I don’t blame anyone who wonders why a film they’ve probably barely heard of warrants the attention that I’ve given it. Well, for me, I like to try and run with my hunches, and one such hunch was that this political dramedy from David Gordon Green that stars Sandra Bullock had a chance as a dark horse or X factor. For a few months, I’d waited to see if it would be a 2015 or 2016 release, but in the past week or two, word has come down from Warner Brothers that not only is it coming out this year, it’s got an Oscar friendly release date as well. As such, I thought it was time to discuss this one a bit. This is...

Stranger Than Science-Fiction: Steven Shainberg Senses the “Rupture”
Before 50 Shades of Grey was made fashionable by mainstream auds, Secretary was a sizzler cubicle space title that made Steven Shainberg a sought after indie helmer. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Rupture will be his comeback of sorts, as he hasn’t lensed a film in almost a decade. To be fair, he did produced some projects, including Our Brand is Crisis for his docu-filmmaker wife Rachel Boynton, but his highly imaginative Fur was completely maimed during its theatrical run. Producer Andrew Lazar who broke out with 1996′s Bound (worthy pair in his filmography include Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and the underrated 2009 comedy, I Love You Phillip Morris) and recently broke the bank with American Sniper is producing the project along with Christina Weiss Lurie (frequent Sundance accepted docu-producer), Ambi’s Andrea Iervolino and Lady Monika Bacardi (The Humbling, James Franco’s currently being filmed In Dubious Battle...

David Gordon Green Talks Globetrotting Next Film ‘Our Brand Is Crisis’ And Taking Actors “Safely Into Dangerous Places”
David Gordon Green at an event for Snow Angels (2007)
Quietly turning in two back-to-back Texas gems in the form of “Joe” and “Manglehorn” (the latter of which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and hits theatres soon via IFC Films), director David Gordon Green seems to have struck gold with a home turf advantage —during production of “Manglehorn,” he could ride his bike to nearly every location. But he’s set a challenge for himself with follow-up “Our Brand is Crisis,” a political comedy-drama starring Sandra Bullock, Scoot McNairy and Billy Bob Thornton. “Bolivia, Puerto Rico, New Orleans, Colorado, and Los Angeles,” Green told us at SXSW of his globetrotting filming locations, going on to hint further at what the film has in store. Based on the 2005 documentary of the same name by Rachel Boynton, Green’s film focuses on questionable political strategies used by U.S. consultancy company Greenberg Carville Shrum during on the 2002 Bolivian political elections.

Filming Begins on David Gordon Green’s Our Brand Is Crisis Starring Sandra Bullock, Anthony Mackie, Zoe Kazan & Billy Bob Thornton
Filming is underway in New Orleans on director David Gordon Green’s (“Pineapple Express,” “George Washington”) feature adaptation of the critically acclaimed 2005 documentary Our Brand Is Crisis, starring Oscar winners Sandra Bullock (“The Blind Side”) and Billy Bob Thornton (“Sling Blade”).

When a group of American consultants accept the challenge of getting an unpopular Bolivian president re-elected, they realize they need help. Tracking down retired maverick political consultant Jane Bodine (Bullock) to her cabin in the woods, they persuade her to lead the team—a decision they quickly come to regret, as “Calamity” Jane begins to live up to her nickname, unleashing her very own brand of chaos on the campaign.

Just as all seems lost, the loathsome Pat Candy (Thornton), Jane’s worst enemy, arrives in town to work for the opposition. Suddenly things become personal and as the battle begins the consultants get to see Jane the legend in action.

Sandra Bullock & David Gordon Green Team for 'Our Brand is Crisis'
Following big success with Gravity last year, plans for Sandra Bullock to return to Warner Bros. are solidifying as the studio has just given a greenlight the political dramedy Our Brand is Crisis. The project has been in development for years at George Clooney's Smokehouse Pictures, and Bullock began circling the project late last year during awards season. Now it seems to be coming together as Variety has learned Pineapple Express and Prince Avalanche director David Gordon Green is set to direct the film based on Rachel Boynton's 2005 documentary of the same name about American political strategies used in Bolivia. The documentary followed real-life consultants James Carville and Stan Greenberg, but it sounds this film will follow fictional political consultants instead. David Gordon Green Will Direct Sandra Bullock In Our Brand Is Crisis
Both David Gordon Green and Sandra Bullock are in the good books of moviegoers again. The director of Joe and Prince Avalanche has redeemed himself after a few big-budget comedy misfires (do I even need to mention Your Highness?), and Bullock has turned into a quality actor who can also bring in big crowds. Three of her last four films – The Blind Side, The Heat and Gravity – were resounding box office successes, and landed her two Oscar nominations and one win. With that in mind, the indie director is now attached to Our Brand Is Crisis, a political dramedy that Bullock is set to star in.

Our Brand in Crisis comes from Smokehouse Pictures producers Grant Heslov and George Clooney and was recently greenlit by Warner Bros., the studio behind Argo, another true-story political drama from Smokehouse. Green’s film is based on the 2005 documentary of the same name, which...
