They can shred with the best of them and combine crushing guitar riffs with retro synths for a truly unique sound that stands out from the increasingly crowded genre. Kennedy, whose previous efforts include the 2007 feature Days of Darkness and 2009’s Penance, told us of Backtrack 2.0, which stars scream queen Eve Mauro (Wicked Lake, Sorority Party Massacre) and Harold Phillips, “It's doing the festival circuit at the moment. I have submitted it into all the genre festivals and am waiting to hear back from most at this point, but it's been accepted into four so far, and both my lead actors are up for multiple awards.”
Written, directed, produced and edited by Kennedy with sound design and score by Mark Binder and cinematography by Tristan Milani, Backtrack 2.0 intends to serve as a launch for a feature version titled Reversal...

Generally you can find plenty of information about your favorite stateside filmmaker, and depending on who they are (see: David Gordon Green), you can find a long list of potential upcoming projects to investigate. But being head-over-heels for a foreign director is a different story -- without the Hollywood system or independent film cliques to generate word of mouth or gossip, you can spend years without hearing a peep from even the biggest festival sweethearts, and only last week were were discussing around the Playlist water cooler where some of our favorite international filmmakers had gone in the last few years.
As we were pondering the status of these auteurs, good news hit the trades: Arnaud Desplechin's adaptation of Georges Devereux's "Psychotherapy Of A Plains Indian" found a star in Benicio Del Toro and would be shooting June 18th in Michigan. Titled "Jimmy Picard," Del Toro would play the...

A.D. Calvo is quickly making a name for himself as an important new figure in horror. His strange, mental illness film The Melancholy Fantastic certainly caught our attention with its May-esque vibe and almost Lynchian oddness and his insane sounding Snow White project sounds totally intriguing.
But it seems that Snow White was put on hold for another project called House of Dust. Knowing Calvo, I'd hate to call this a "teen horror," but the young cast play students who so find themselves in a heap of supernatural trouble.
The production has shared the first stills from the film that's currently filming, so it's our first look at the cast.
Synopsis:
College students exploring an abandoned insane asylum accidentally shatter canisters holding the cremains of former mental patients; inhaling the dusty ash filling the air, they.re soon possessed by the souls once held within them. One, is a convicted...

"As the closing night film at Cannes — and, as such, lumped in historically with such bland films as The Tree, What Just Happened?, Chromophobia and Days of Darkness — writer-director Christophe Honoré's Les Bien-Aimés (aka Beloved) is already at a disadvantage," begins James Rocchi at the Playlist. "Sidelined out of competition, offered up as a final course to cineastes whose metaphorical bellies are already set to burst from an excess of riches, no one was going to think too much about the movie, regardless of its quality. Honoré's film in fact falls short of even the minimal expectations set by circumstance, to be truly tedious, flat and hollow — a recycled exploration of themes and techniques the director has used before inside the bloated casing of a movie with a 145-minute running time."
Honoré's films "are not musicals as Americans might think of them or, for that matter, as Jacques Demy...

It’s been a while since we chatted with Jake Kennedy, the man behind independent horror features Days of Darkness (2008) and Penance (2009), although regardless of the passage of time, it appears that Kennedy has not only tended dutifully to his historic Diy spirit but has also taken it to new and clever heights as witnessed by his unique approach to the financing and distribution of his latest planned feature, Reversal.
An action/thriller/horror hybrid which is slated to star Eve Mauro (Wicked Lake, The Steam Experiment), Reversal revolves around, “a young, innocent woman who awakens bound in a storage room with no memory of how she got there,” states Kennedy, “and upon her escape, she finds herself stalked by a masked stranger, and the narrative plays out in reverse.” Likening the project to a cross between The Strangers and Memento, Kennedy reveals as well that Danny Trejo (Machete) and...

Celeb Sightings: Gregg Araki and his clan explode -- or Kaboom -- into Cannes, while Monia Chokri (of Days of Darkness and current fest flick Heartbeats) treats the cameras to some tongue. The Examiner shares the super-exciting fashion hits and misses, which continue as JustJared shares peeks of Camilla Belle, Jennifer Hudson, Kate Beckinsale, and Salma Hayek. Hudson also appeared alongside Terrence Howard for a photo call for the upcoming Winnie. But it's not just lookers drawing the big fest crowds -- Woody Allen descended upon the red carpet and inspired a mob scene.

I’m a little disturbed because I didn’t think that the new Penance clip on Shock Till You Drop was “the most outrageously brutal scene in movie history.” Is it because I’m a horrible person who should be put down or because I don’t have a penis? I know all guys squirm at stuff like that and I don’t blame them, but this clip was rather boring to me. Penance, directed by Jake Kennedy (Days of Darkness), stars Marieh Delfino (Jeepers Creepers 2) and Eve Mauro (Wicked Lake) as strippers who get invited to a private party which happens to be hosted [...]

Days of Darkness director Jake Kennedy's latest endeavor Penance is now available on DVD and he was kind (?!) enough to pass along what's being touted as "the most outrageously brutal scene in movie history." Is it? Judge for yourself by clicking on the player below and watch leading man Graham McTavish perform a bit of self mutilation that would make Ellen Page in Hard Candy grin. Marieh Delfino ( Jeepers Creepers 2 ) and Eve Mauro ( Wicked Lake ) also star. They play a pair of strippers who get invited to a private party unaware that it's presided over by a maniac (McTavish). The clip tells you how and where you can obtain Penance , so hang in there.

Horror is so huge right now that I feel as if I can safely say that nearly 5-10 of the best boxing movies each weekend are of the horror/thriller/sci-fi genre. Saw II boxed 90 million not to mention the recent success of Paranormal Activity at 104 million. Of course there are different types of horror: the most popular right now being Vampire (Twilight, True Blood, Vampire Diaries, and the soon to be released Daybreakers). Penance, written and directed Jake Kennedy (Days Of Darkness) , is most recently available on DVD and I will write upfront, if you are into torture, this is your movie.
Struggling to provide for her young child, single mom Amelia (Marieh Delfino of Jeepers Creepers II) grudgingly decides to become a stripper to take care of her young daughter and herself. But her decision proves disastrous when it lands her in the throws of a self-righteous psychotic (Graham McTavish,...

As a participant in the second Fangoria Blood Drive (released on DVD in 2005), filmmaker Jake Kennedy quickly made our watch list. As his career has blossomed over the past few years, Kennedy has now completed his second feature film, Penance. Fangoria is proud to be presenting a special screening of the film on May 30th as a part of our Midnite Madness series at The Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills, California.
We recently caught up with Jake for a round of 13 Questions for Fango readers to get better aquainted.
Fangoria: What kind of educational background do you have? Jake Kennedy: I was educated in England and went to boarding schools from the age of 10. I then went to university and got a degree in Psychology and Cartography. Very handy!
Fangoria: I know you’ve got a history in the marketing/sales field, how does having that experience help you in the film industry?...

Fango caught up with writer/director Jake (Days Of Darkness) Kennedy, who tipped us off to the new non-work-safe trailer (which you can seen below) for his horror flick Penance. Previously titled The Devil’S Dungeon, produced by Will (Automaton Transfusion) Clevinger and filmed last year in Los Angeles, Penance stars Jeepers Creepers 2’s Marieh Delfino (pictured) as a stripper who falls into the hands of sadistic surgeon (Graham McTavish) with genital mutilation on his mind.
“The title changed from The Devil’S Dungeon to Penance since we believe it has far exceeded our own quality standards in terms of cast, performance and look,” Kennedy tells Fango. “So we wanted to steer away from a B-movie-esque moniker and more toward a cooler, more representative name. Penance means ‘the repentance of one’s sins,’ and that’s exactly what our bad guy is trying to do—and what he’s...

Toronto to fete Arcand, Cronenberg pics
TORONTO -- David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises, starring Naomi Watts and Viggo Mortensen, and Denys Arcand's Days of Darkness will get the red-carpet treatment at the Toronto International Film Festival, organizers said Tuesday.
The latest work from veteran Canadian directors Cronenberg and Arcand -- whose film closed Cannes this year -- will receive galas at Roy Thomson Hall.
Unveiling the Canadian contingent in Toronto, festival organizers said they have booked Francois Girard's Keira Knightley starrer Silk from Picturehouse and New Line International, Roger Spottiswoode's Rwandan drama Shake Hands With the Devil and Clement Virgo's boxing tale Poor Boy's Game, starring Danny Glover, for Special Presentations slots.
Also joining the Special Presentations program is Adam Vollick's Here Is What Is, a portrait of famed record producer Daniel Lanois, and Guy Maddin's My Winnipeg, billed as a "docu-fantasia" about the filmmaker's hometown.
Canadian films unspooling as part of Toronto's Contemporary World Cinema section include Leonard Farlinger's All Hat; Bruce Sweeney's American Venus, starring Rebecca De Mornay; Bernard Emond's Contre Toute Esperance, which will also screen in Locarno; and Carl Bessai's Carrie-Anne Moss starrer Normal.
Also joining the CWC party is Laurie Lynd's Breakfast With Scot, Denis Cote's Nos Vies Privees and Kari Skogland's The Stone Angel, the big-screen adaptation of the classic Margaret Laurence novel, starring Ellen Burstyn.
