This Day That Year: Madhur Bhandarkar’s Corporate Clocks 19 Years
Image
Subhash K Jha looks back at Madhur Bhandarkar’s Corporate, which released in 2006, in a new installment of his series This Day That Year.

All of Madhur Bhandarkar’s best works—and this certainly qualifies as a fine progressive piece of cinema—have finally boiled down to the question of the conscience and the individual.

Kay Kay Menon playing the ambitious but conscientious corporate wheeler-dealer run by an unscrupulous tycoon (Rajat Kapoor) who would go to any length to make his way up the corporate ladder, is so adept at showing his troubled conscience you wonder which came first… the conscience or movies crystallizing its dilemma.

The corporate world so much a part of television serials, has never been exposed on the large screen since Shyam Benegal’s Kalyug. To his credit Bhandarkar, with considerable help from his editor, slices through these ambition-driven people with the urgent hiss of a car negotiating a craggy highway.

12 Years Of Atul Sabharwal’s Aurangzeb
Image
Starring Arjun Kapoor, Prithviraj, Jackie Shroff, and Rishi Kapoor, Aurangzeb, directed by Atul Sabharwal released in 2013. In this feature, Subhash K Jha revisits the crime thriller, and Rishi Kapoor speaks on being the villain – he was not happy with that label.

Sapna se badaa apna hota hai…It’s okay to sacrifice one’s dreams for the sake of those you love. This is a recurrent thought in this hard-hitting family drama about fatally flawed people who flock together in search of happiness that is snatched from them by a fate far more cruel and savage than what we generally see and recognize as destiny.

The destiny that seems to underline the lives in writer-director Atul Sabharwal’s drama of family feuds is as flawed as it is rich in resonances. And why not! Perfection is as boring as it is unbelievable. Sabharwal spreads out a hectic, hefty horizon of dark grey,...

Shyam Benegal, Acclaimed Indian Filmmaker, Dies at 90
Image
Shyam Benegal, a pivotal figure in Indian cinema known for his incisive and socially conscious storytelling, died on Monday in Mumbai following a chronic kidney ailment, his daughter confirmed to India Today. He was 90.

His career, spanning over five decades, left an indelible mark on the film industry, blending art with activism and bridging the gap between mainstream and parallel cinema. He was instrumental in shaping India’s New Wave cinema movement, also known as Parallel Cinema, in the 1970s.

Benegal began his career in advertising before transitioning to filmmaking, a move that would redefine Indian storytelling. His debut fiction feature, “Ankur” (1974), became a cornerstone of Indian cinema, earning critical acclaim for its unflinching portrayal of social hierarchies and gender dynamics. The film, which played at the Berlinale, won multiple Indian National Film Awards and launched the career of actor Shabana Azmi.

Review: ‘Kalki 2898 Ad’ Aims to Build Franchise Loyalty
Image
The Indian epic Mahabharata has long been an inspiration to Indian filmmakers. Notable examples include Shyam Benegal’s Kalyug (1981) and Mani Ratnam’s Thalapathi (1991), which instantly come to mind. Both films take the premise of the mythological text and set their stories in contemporary societies plagued by greed, violence, and crime, reflecting a world that is both ruthless and compassionate. Ashwin Nag’s recent outing Kalki 2898 Ad borrows characters who gallantly participated in the Kurukshetra War, utilizing both trickery and bravery to gain succession between two groups of cousins. Nag sets his ambitious tale in a futuristic setting filled with computer-generated images of a ravaged and cruel world where people, governed by dominating powers, are awaiting a miracle to rescue them from their misery. With actors cast from various film industries across the country, including Bollywood, Tollywood, Mollywood, and Kollywood, the dystopic Telugu action drama carefully balances itself between...

The Great Indian Kapil Show Ep 10 Review Ft. Mr & Mrs Mahi: Janhvi Kapoor & Rajkummar Rao (Photo Credit –Instagram)

The Great Indian Kapil Show arrived with yet another episode featuring Mr and Mrs Mahi Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao. The episode built up on the old traditional pati – patni jokes where the patni is the villain, bhoot and everything terrible one can associate with!

Interestingly, there was no comeback from the other side, as we witnessed Archana Puran Singh and Janhvi Kapoor laughing at all the digs on wives. And no, this is not about feminism or equality; it is just a balancing act.

Earlier, Kapil Sharma’s team used to have Sumona Chakraborty, and she used to give it back to Kappu for roasting wives as a community! But this time, all the wives had to giggle and let the roast rise!

Raj Thackeray’s Mns opposes Pak singer Atif Aslam’s ‘comeback’ to Bollywood
Image
Reviving its old policy, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (Mns) led by Raj Thackeray has warned Bollywood producers against ‘laying the red carpet’ for Pakistani singer Atif Aslam on his purported “comeback” plans to croon for a Hindi film.

Mns Cinema Wing President Ameya Khopkar said that those who are gearing up to bring Aslam here based on a court verdict “need to be shown their place”.

“Pakistani artistes will not be tolerated here. Never. It is unfortunate that we need to repeat ourselves, yet let me make it clear once again,” Khopkar, who had earlier objected to the release of a Pakistan film titled ‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’ in December 2022, said here on Monday.

He also targeted popular singer Arijit Singh, who is reportedly standing in support of Aslam.

“This was and will remain the stand of Mns. Not just Bollywood. I challenge the industries of any language in...

‘Rip PR/Marketing’: Rahul Vaidya on Poonam Pandey’s new low
Image
Singer and music composer Rahul Vaidya has slammed the fake death announcement by the controversial actress Poonam Pandey, urging people to refrain from reacting, categorising it as a strategic move in her campaign, and dismissing it with a poignant ‘Rip PR/marketing’.

On Friday morning, a post appeared on Pandey’s official Instagram handle announcing her death from cervical cancer. Rahul earlier had suspicions regarding the sudden death announcement of Poonam.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the ‘Baaton Ko Teri’ singer had written: “Am I the only one who thinks Poonam Pandey is not dead…??”

Now, on Saturday, when Poonam shared a video on social media saying that she has faked her demise, as she wanted to ignite a conversation around cervical cancer, Rahul took to the social media and voiced his strong disapproval, calling it a new low of creating a sensational campaign.

Xulfi, the dark stallion of Pakistani music
Image
Brings a barrage of memories, doesn’t it?

It was the era of good music playing across the Indian mainstream as opposed to the current times when barring a few exceptions, all you hear are singers setting their voices to melodyne or auto-tune, and composers heavily synthesising their melodies to make it “audience friendly”.

However, true art and artistic integrity always make their way around as they transcend the boundaries of space and time, and Zulfiqar Jabbar Khan, professionally known as Xulfi, is a true testament of this fact.

Xulfi is the lead singer of the Pakistani band ‘Call’ and is the one who sang ‘Laree Chootee’ and even featured in its music video which cross-cuts between two worlds of ‘Call’ performing for the screen and Abhay and Neha Dhupia dancing to the tune.

While in India, the larger audience may remember him for just ‘Laree Chootee’, across the border,...

India's first crossover hero who showed his calibre both at home and abroad
Image
The youngest of Bollywood’s famous Kapoor brothers, he did not have their one defining and enduring cinematic image – Raj’s naive "tramp" identity in the Charlie Chaplin tradition or Shammi’s Elvis-like jiving, rebellious "playboy" persona, but went to surpass both in sheer diversity of his acting.

With his copybook good looks, rakish smile, infectious charm, toothy grin and languid drawl, or the air of earnestness, playing romantic roles, be they of businessmen, police inspectors, college students, et al came naturally to him, but Shashi Kapoor went on to play more ‘common man’ roles, decadent princes, aging poets and even angels with the same charm and intensity.

Born on March 18, 1938 in the then Calcutta to Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarn ‘Rama’ Devi, Balbir Raj ‘Shashi’ Kapoor was destined to walk in his family’s footsteps on the silver screen.

Though he first appeared on screen as a child artiste in...

“The trailer of Mohit Suri’s Malang is like a rollercoaster ride …on speed” – Subhash K Jha
The trailer of Mohit Suri’s Malang is like a rollercoaster ride …on Speed. The images are deliberately done in distinctive blotchy colours to show minds on the brink. Producer Luv Ranjan says Malang is the most emotionally violent film he has produced. After seeing the trailer I have to agree.

There are no normal characters in Malang, at least none is visible in the tempestuous trailer. Each of the four protagonists played by Aditya Roy Kapoor, Disha Patani, Kunal Khemmu and (above all) Anil Kapoor is high on life. They jump off planes, they whizz past life in fast cars, they bathe themselves in bright colours.

These are characters who live in the fast aand furious lane. I don’t know what motivates their ceaseless rush of surplus adrenaline, maybe the realization that any of the fearless four can end up dead on the slippery sidewalk.

Mohit Suri’s characters,...

Remembering Girish Karnad a Creative powerhouse
Girish Karnad was one of the true intellectuals of post Independent India. A polyglot, playwright, actor, film maker, aesthete, scholar, teacher, critic and a humanist Girish was never a close friend but someone whom I always looked forward to meeting.

We came to know each other around 1972 through several common friends like Shyam Benegal, Basu Chatterjee, Satyadev Dubey and B.V. Karanth though I was acquainted with his work from the mid-sixties. His plays 'Yayati' (1961), 'Tughlaq' (1964), 'Hayavadana' (1972) and 'Nagamandala' (1988) rank among the finest Indian plays post-Independence.

A Rhodes scholar, Girish interestingly started by reading Mathematics in college. He was to become a scholar in history, literature, cinema and stagecraft. He was steeped in Indian tradition and had a deep study of our mythology, specially the Mahabharata.

He has won practically every award which an artiste in India can aspire for - Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Sahitya Akademi Award, Kalidas Samman, Jnanpith Award,...

Kunal has been part of Golmaal 3, Golmaal Again, Go Goa Gone and has more multi-starrer movies, including the recently announced Malang and the fifth part of Golmaal, lined up.

What does he like about being a part of multi-starrer movies?

"The most important reason is that it's not on your shoulders," he replied with a laugh.? But that's not the only reason.

"It's the story that always attracts me. A film like Golmaal only works because of all of us. It is as much Ajay's film as it is mine or Arshad's or Tusshar's. These are the stories of the gang,"

Kunal told Ians in a telephonic interview.

Mohit Suri talks about unconventional casting and great music in Ek Villain
Mohit Suri’s Ek Villain starring Riteish Deshmukh, Sidharth Malhotra and Shraddha Kapoor is among the most keenly awaited films of the season what with his enviable track record of blockbusters behind him.

Talking about the film’s unusual casting, Mohit says, “I’ve never followed convention. I’ve never cast people just because they’re hot or popular. For me, it’s always been about who is right for the role. Riteish, for instance, has never done something like this before. You’ve seen him largely in comic roles. Yet when you watch Ek Villain you will realize that there is no one better than Riteish for this role. Sidharth has struggled his way up; he’s seen dark days. There was angst in him that made him a perfect fit for this film. Shraddha is more like a boyfriend, a guy buddy I can call in the middle of the night.

So what if she started her career with a typical Karan Johar film? The actress said: "I would love to do a film like.

Kunal Kemmu and Mia Evonne Uyeda in Blood Money (2012)
Mahesh Bhatt speaks about ‘Blood Money’
Kunal Kemmu and Mia Evonne Uyeda in Blood Money (2012)
Mumbai: Mahesh Bhatt’s ‘Blood Money’ directed by Vishal Mahadkar will be out soon, the scheduled release date is 30th of March, 2012. Mahesh it seems is not very happy with the current title. If he had had his way, the film would have been titled ‘Kalyug 2’ instead of ‘Blood Money’.

Indeed he meant to, but was forced to relent after being staunchly opposed by director Vishal and actor Kunal Khemu. The justification they gave is quite sensible. The Bhatt camp is already making ‘Raaz 3’, ‘Murder 3’, ‘Jism 3’, ‘Ashiqui 2’; so it made sense to try and keep an original title like ‘Blood Money’.

‘Blood Money’ is the story of a small-time boy (Kunal Khemu) who elopes with his girl (actress Amrita Puri of ‘Aisha’ fame) to Cape Town where he enters into a diamond.
