James Toback
James Toback, First-Hand: One Accuser Shares Her Story Using Her Diary and a Sketch
James Toback
On October 22, after reading Glenn Whipp’s incendiary James Toback investigation in the La Times, Becky Wahlstrom scoured her journals. A veteran actress whose credits include “Joan of Arcadia” and “Mad Men,” she was 23 when she wrote a seven-and-a-half page entry on August 13, 1998 that described meeting Toback at the Beverly Hills Hotel for approximately five hours the night before.

Ostensibly, it was an audition for his film “Black and White”; Toback requested the meeting after seeing her deliver two lines in Don Roos’ “The Opposite of Sex.” She went to the audition without sides; she loved the idea that Toback liked to build his roles around his actors, a philosophy she embraced while studying at the Piven Theatre Workshop in Chicago.

Vegas Police Describe Harrowing Minutes Getting in Gunman's Room During Mass Shooting — and the 'Eerie' Scene Inside
Guns — “so many guns” — were among the first things police saw last weekend after they breached the room in the Mandalay Bay casino where Stephen Paddock had, minutes earlier, been raining down bullets on a nearby concert crowd.

“So many guns, so many magazines, stacks and stacks of magazines everywhere,” Las Vegas police officer Dave Newton told CBS News’ 60 Minutes on Sunday.

Newton, along with Sgt. Joshua Bitsko and detectives Casey Clarkson and Matthew Donaldson, all with Vegas police, appeared on 60 Minutes to detail their rapid response to the mass shooting on Oct. 1 at the Route 91 Harvest festival.

Welcome to Hell: Close-Up on Camilo Restrepo's "Impression of a War"
Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Camilo Restrepo's Impression of a War (2015), is showing from August 10 - September 9, 2017 in most countries around the world as part of our Direct from Locarno series. “Why, why, why!” screamed a woman as she tore at the twisted and charred wreckage of a car in the hope of finding the body of her young daughter, whom she had left inside. The force of the blast hurled the remains of the vehicle into the front of a furniture store.—The New York Times, April 16, 1993In any event, ordinary Colombians celebrated the tenth anniversary of the slaying of their most famous billionaire criminal with little optimism that the car-bombings would ever cease. Fear the Walking Dead Season 2 Finale Recap: For Better or Much, Much Worse
Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead (2010)
If it’s always darkest before the dawn, daybreak must be right around the corner. As Season 2 of Fear the Walking Dead drew to a close Sunday, not only did the Grim Reaper make off with enough characters to populate a whole other series, but we were introduced to the volatile “new” Travis that Ep Dave Erickson teased back in August, learned along with Nick and Luciana that there was more to Alejandro than met the lie eye, and watched a little sadly as Alicia completed her transformation into a post-apocalyptic survivor. What did you think of the two-parter? Let...

Elementary School Teacher Killed in Apparent Murder-Suicide May Have Abused Multiple Kids: Reports
Libuse Safránková and Jan Tríska in La communale (1991)
A Minnesota elementary school teacher and his husband, who were found dead last week in an apparent murder-suicide in Washington state, may have sexually abused multiple underage boys, according to reports. Aric Babbitt, 40, and Matthew Deyo, 36, were reportedly found dead on Lopez Island on Aug. 25, just two weeks after one of Babbitt's former students went to police and accused him of sexual assault. More possible victims have now been identified, according to court documents obtained by multiple news agencies. The accusations first came to light Aug. 14 when the teen told police that he'd allegedly had "an ongoing sexual relationship" with...

Criterion Reflections – Capricious Summer (1968) – Es 32
David’s Quick Take for the tl;dr Media Consumer:

Capricious Summer is fairly easy to watch (a slight 76 minute feature, in color), summarize (a whimsical sex comedy about three middle-aged men in a small rustic town are shaken out of their routines when they’re distracted by the arrival of an itinerant magician and his beautiful assistant) and compartmentalize (coming at the tail end of the Czech New Wave, this is Jiří Menzel’s less celebrated follow-up to the Oscar-winning Closely Watched Trains.) But just as conveniently as the film might fit within those pigeonholes, there’s a serious risk of underestimating what Menzel places before us here.

Comfortably nestled within a volume of the Eclipse Series expressly dedicated to the aforementioned Czech New Wave, Capricious Summer is at risk of being regarded as simply one of six quirky, enjoyable treats in that box. Each film has its own distinctive feel,...

Memorable Images Focus Of Animated Features Celebration During Oscar Week
One of movie fans favorite events of Oscar Week was held Thursday evening at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre, as the Academy held the eighth annual event celebrating the nominees for Best Animated Feature Film.

The evening featured clips from each film, followed by an onstage discussion with each group of nominated filmmakers.

This year’s eclectic mix – Anomalisa, Boy and the World, Inside Out, Shaun the Sheep Movie and When Marnie Was There – are as international as they are distinct.

Employing a stunning variety of animation techniques, the nominees explored a wide range of topics, including existential despair, devastation of natural resources, learning to handle emotion, the value of friendship and surviving the difficulties of adolescence.

This year, members were able to stream the movies and voting came from all over the world.

The evening’s hosts were Don Hall, Chris Williams, Roy Conli, last year’s Oscar winning team from Big Hero 6.

Review: The Lobster (AFI Fest 2015)
A darkly funny meditation on romance and relationships, The Lobster uses a high concept in order to explore some of the universal truths of love in 2015. It's one of the year's weirdest movies, and while it walks the line of surreality and absurdism, there's an undercurrent of sadness and heartbreak to it that grounds the story even during its most outlandish moments. The Lobster is a rich exploration of modern love, and its eccentric personality makes it feel like the work of a creative force who sees the world like no one else.

That high concept I mentioned? It goes like this: The movie takes place in a world in which cities consist only of couples, and all single people are taken to an isolated hotel and given 45 days to fall in love and find a suitable mate. If they fail, they are turned into an animal of their choice.

'Nashville' Recap: Crazy Town
Trace Adkins
Usually weddings are the stuff of sweeps weeks and seasons finales. Not on last night's Nashville, where Teddy taking Peggy's hand in marriage was about as sentimental as Trace Adkins' hick-hop hit "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk," probably because Teddy is a terrible mealy-mouthed bore and Peggy is an unsympathetic kook.

Not even Teddy seems excited about his nuptials. Making this even more of a headache for Nashville's fine mayor, he has to twist his own "daughter's" arm into providing musical entertainment at the reception (because it's hard to find musicians...

Mad Men Recap: Signs and Blunders
Mad Men (2007)
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. And then Pete smoked a joint.

Lots of seemingly good stuff happens in this week’s Mad Men: Joan stands up for herself, Chevy finally signs off on the firm’s work and Don makes it through a stretch of days without cheating on his wife. But an air of dread – highlighted by the riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention – seeps into everything like pot smoke into Campbell’s comb-over. You read that right: Everything’s so topsy-turvy in this episode that the last scene involves Pete getting high at the office.

"Degrassi: Las Vegas" recap: Spring Break!
Tags: DegrassiDegrassi: VegasFimogenIMDb

It’s Vegas time! It may be cold and miserable outside as I write this, but it’s sunny and springtime on Degrassi for their one-hour Spring Break themed special.

We open with Fiona trying to conduct a mock wedding ceremony for the engaged couple, Bianca and Drew, who are unhelpfully consumed by a fit of giggles. When Drew admits that he hasn't written his vows yet and is having second thoughts about not inviting his parents, Bianca and Fiona scold him to at least pull himself together before they get to the altar.

And then the most lesbian moment of the episode happens: Tegan and Sara's new single, "Closer," plays over the title screen, making me a very happy camper.

Which is apparently what Drew told Mama Torres that he and Adam were, as well. They sneak into the house to pack for their “camping trip,...

'Boardwalk Empire' Recap: Bombshell
Well, now we know what this was all about. When it comes to retaliation, Gyp has got style. His decision to blow up Babette's Supper Club, complete with a Michael Bay-caliber explosion, no longer places him in the company of second-rate, forgettable gangsters. As he stated in an earlier episode, all business to him is personal, even if it isn't to Nucky. And now Gyp has evened the score by making this war plenty personal for his New Jersey enemy: Billie was one of the fatalities.

It was a pithy love affair with the erstwhile Nadine Beckenbauer of Newburgh, New York, for both Nucky and the audience. But even if Gyp hadn't taken out this budding starlet, it's unlikely her fling with her Atlantic City beau would've lasted much longer. For one thing, a successful screen test had put her on the fast track to a movie career. And...

What Makes a Game Indie? "Rochard" Blurs the Line
Jon St. John
In 2008, the new European developer Recoil Games was creating an ambitious first-person shooter called "Earth No More." The team was large and the product was larger. In 2009, the financial crisis struck, and the project was postponed indefinitely. Yesterday, we met with a smaller, but equally hopeful Recoil team to discuss their new game, "Rochard," a downloadable exclusive for PlayStation Network. What happens when a major studio tightens the belt like this? Can a once traditional developer be indie?

"Rochard" is a tough title to define. Like "Metroid" and "Shadow Complex," the titular hero (voiced by Jon St. John, the throat of Duke Nukem) navigates a 2D plane, blasting enemies, solving puzzles and exploring a sci-fi world.

The pot-bellied, mustachioed engineer has two unique methods for manipulating gravity -- the crux of the game. The first, the G-Lifter, is Rochard's go-to weapon and puzzle solver. With a click, the gun lifts a nearby crate with ease.

Supernatural - Episode 6.5 - Live Free or Twihard - Recap by Dahne
Previously on Supernatural, Harmony and Gordon became vamps (I miss Gordon), Gramps was creepy and cocky, Lisa was amazing, Sam lied to Dean, and Dean worried about Sam, which is par for the course these days.

Over in dank goth bar, a braindead teen shows the world's fakest id to a bartender who doesn't care. Her name is Kristin for those keeping track of Twilight references. There she meets her internet-stalker date, PrettyBoy Vamp. PrettyBoy (Robert) compliments her lame poetry and pretends to be interested in what she says. Since this is purposely a retelling of Twilight's over-angsty drama, it is not worth recapping. I know this was supposed to be funny but to me it was a waste of 4 minutes. I wanted snarky one-liners not a play-by-play of the worst of Twilight. Moving on. The heavy breathing, longing glances, and emo music are distracting me.

Braindead wants to be...

Review/Contest: Night of the Living Trekkies
When I got an email asking if I would be interested in receiving and reviewing a copy of Night of the Living Trekkies, I totally jumped on that shit!

While my sister is more of a Trek fan than myself (sorry guys, I’m a Star Wars kinda dork), I have fond memories of watching reruns and whatever current series was airing when I was a kid. Plus, a sci-fi/horror/parody about a dork convention? Definitely couldn’t pass that up.

The novel, by Kevin David Anderson and Sam Stall, follows glorified bellhop Jim Pike (who just happens to have been through two military tours in Afghanistan) and a rag-tag bunch of con-goers including his sister, a booth babe and a pompous nerd as they try to survive a zombie apocalypse and escape the con with their lives.

Now, I know that this may sound like a regular convention to you,...

Mad Men - Episode 4.06 - Waldorf Stories - Recap
“Waldorf Stories” begins with Don reviewing the advertising book of Danny Siegel, a young (although probably not as young as he claims to be) hopeful ad man who has taken the slogan “the cure for the common cold” and recycled it for many other products. Don is unimpressed (nor is Peggy, who is assisting Don with the interview), and although Danny is related to Roger’s wife, it is not nearly enough for him to even be considered for the job. Don and Peggy have a brief conversation about the Glo-Coat commercial, which is up for an award at the Clio’s later that night. The conversation shortly turns to Vick Chemical, for which Peggy is responsible for creating an ad by the following Monday, even though she doesn’t get along with the new art director, Stan Rizzo.

Don then makes his way to Roger’s office, where they...

Maury Chaykin obituary
Actor who was at his best in shadowy roles

The actor Maury Chaykin, who has died aged 61 after a heart-valve infection, was an American and a Canadian citizen, and his career reflected his dual nationality. In the Us, he was a familiar face, if not a recognisable name, playing small but telling roles in major films. His breakthrough came in Dances With Wolves (1990), playing Major Fambrough, who sends Kevin Costner on his frontier assignment and then kills himself. Chaykin's only leading role was in the cable TV series A Nero Wolfe Mystery (2001), as the titular detective who refuses to leave his house, delegating that to his assistant (Timothy Hutton).

In Canada, Chaykin was something of a national treasure. He won a Genie award for best actor for his performance as a Brian Wilson-like burned-out rock star in Whale Music (1994), gave remarkable performances in three films directed by Atom Egoyan...
