‘Warfare’s Starry Cast Can’t Replicate ‘Civil War’s Box Office Success
Image
Directed by Alex Garland and the Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza, Warfareopened with the one-two punch of excellent reviews and amazing audience response this week. The movie isn’t an easy one to watch; scene after scene is dedicated to depicting the grim realities of modern warfare. But it seems to have struck a chord with folks, and will likely deliver strong holds in the coming weeks. Warfare opened to solid numbers this weekend, and while it couldn’t match the high benchmark of Garland’s last film, Civil War, it bucked the trends that are normally attached to movies about recent geopolitical conflicts.

Films set against the backdrop of the Iraq War — Green Zone and Stop-Loss come to mind — have a poor track record at the box office. But fortunately, Warfare didn’t cost all that much. Produced on a reported budget of $20 million — this is $30 million less than...

Ryan Phillippe, Mireille Enos, Kyle MacLachlan & Taryn Manning Join Michelle Danner’s Courtroom Drama ‘Miranda’s Victim’
Image
Exclusive: Ryan Phillippe (MacGruber), Mireille Enos (Hanna), Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks) and Taryn Manning (Orange Is the New Black) are the latest additions to Michelle Danner’s courtroom drama, Miranda’s Victim. They join an ensemble led by Abigail Breslin, which also includes Luke Wilson, Andy Garcia and Donald Sutherland, as previously announced.

The film will tell the true story of Trish Weir (Breslin), who in 1963 was kidnapped and brutally raped by Ernesto Miranda. Committed to putting her assailant in prison, Trish’s life is destroyed by America’s legal system as she triggers a law that transforms the nation. Her case notably results in the establishment of the Miranda rights afforded to criminal suspects taken in police custody, to ensure the admissibility of statements made during interrogation, as part of subsequent criminal proceedings.

Phillippe will play the ACLU lawyer Flynn, who successfully argues in front of the Supreme Court...

Channing Tatum on First-Time Filmmaker Frustrations and How Soderbergh Talked Him Into ‘Magic Mike 3’
Image
Channing Tatum has a new movie in theaters. That in itself is something of an event, given that the last time the “Magic Mike” stripper extraordinaire starred in a somewhat prominent movie was “Logan Lucky” in 2017, which came one year after the Coen brothers’ “Hail, Caesar!” For the most part, Tatum has been fairly quiet, doing only a handful of voiceover work and taking on some bit parts. With “Dog,” however, the movie star who broke out with “Step Up” and “Stop-Loss” before carrying tentpoles like “21 Jump Street” is showing a different impulse behind the camera.

Tatum co-directed “Dog” with his longtime writing and producing partner Reid Carolin, and the pair have made a surprisingly touching and thoughtful look at a broken man rediscovering himself through an unlikely canine connection. Tatum plays U.S. army ranger Briggs, who’s tasked with driving a military working dog from Washington to...

How Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin Built Their Production Company Free Association
Image
Channing Tatum and his producing partner Reid Carolin aren’t just the brains — and brawn — behind “Magic Mike.” They’ve built up their company Free Association into a place to go for innovative storytelling, including the road trip movie “Dog” (which opens on Feb. 18), which they co-directed; the Starz TV series “Step Up: Highwater”; and the thriller “Pussy Island,” which will be Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut.

“I think it’s a good partnership,” says Steven Soderbergh, who is directing “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” which Tatum will star in and Carolin wrote. “I think they have a shared sense of people and how the world works.”

Tatum and Carolin speak to Variety about Free Association.

How did the two of you meet?

Channing Tatum: Reid wrote the first version of a movie that I was in called “Stop-Loss,” and then he assisted the director, Kimberly Peirce. And so we...

‘Dog’ Trailer: Channing Tatum Steps into the Director’s Chair for Heartfelt Buddy Comedy
Image
Channing Tatum has not had a prominent live-action film role since his 2017 performances in “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” and “Logan Lucky,” but that’s all about to chance in 2022. Not only is the actor starring opposite Sandra Bullock in the romantic-comedy adventure “The Lost City,” but he’s also making his feature directorial debut with the heartfelt buddy comedy “Dog.” Tatum co-directed the film with Reid Carolin, the writer and producer of “Magic Mike” and “Magic Mike Xxl.” Carolin also produced “Logan Lucky” and served as an executive producer on the Tatum-starring films “22 Jump Street” and “White House Down.”

The official synopsis for “Dog” reads: “[The film] is a buddy comedy that follows the misadventures of two former Army Rangers paired against their will on the road trip of a lifetime. Army Ranger Briggs (Tatum) and Lulu (a Belgian Malinois dog) buckle into a 1984 Ford Bronco and race down the Pacific...

February brings the release of two Warner Bros. theatricals premiering in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day. Debuting on February 12, Judas and the Black Messiah tells the story of Bill O'Neal (Lakeith Stanfield), who infiltrates the Black Panthers per FBI Agent Mitchell (Jesse Plemons) and J. Edgar Hoover (Martin Sheen). As Black Panther Chairman Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya) ascends, falling for a fellow revolutionary (Dominique Fishback) en route, a battle wages for O'Neal's soul.

Tom & Jerry, which premieres on February 26, reignites one of the most beloved rivalries in history when Jerry moves into New York City's finest hotel on the eve of "the wedding of the century," forcing the event's desperate planner to hire Tom to get rid of him.

Both films will be available on HBO Max for 31 days from their respective theatrical releases in the U.S. included at no additional cost to subscribers.

HBO Max New Releases: February 2021
Image
When it released Wonder Woman 1984 to its HBO Max servers in December, WarnerMedia made it abundantly clear that it was ready for a new era of movie distribution. Now, in its list of new releases for February 2021, Warner is attempting another grand experiment for HBO Max.

Judas and the Black Messiah premieres on HBO Max this Feb. 12 and is by every indication the kind of film that awards shows go gaga over. Both Daniel Kaluuya and and Lakeith Stanfield look to be at the top of their respective games in this story about Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton and the FBI that wants to take him down. Will this have the same rhetorical oomph on the small screen? Guess we’ll find out!

Former Shooter star Ryan Phillippe has been tapped as the lead in CBS’ drama pilot Alive (fka Frankenstein). Katrina Law (The Oath) and Aaron Staton (Mad Men) are set as co-leads in the project, a modern interpretation of the classic Frankenstein tale in a cop procedural setting.

Written/executive produced by Jason Tracey and directed/executive produced by Uta Briesewitz, Alive centers on Mark Escher (Phillippe), a San Francisco homicide detective who’s mysteriously brought back to life after being killed in the line of duty. But as he resumes his old life and he and his wife Elizabeth (Law) realize he isn’t the same person he used to be, they zero in on the strange man behind his resurrection: Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Staton).

Lady Bird movie review: flights of adolescent angsty (#LFF2017)
MaryAnn’s quick take… An emotional feast full of humor and pathos about the audacity, the wonder, the horror that is female adolescence. Beautiful, bittersweet, and very generous. I’m “biast” (pro): I am desperate for movies about girls and women; love Ronan and Gerwig

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Herewith the single authentic movie about being a teenaged girl that our male-dominated entertainment sphere has begun to begrudgingly allow us annually. Last year’s was The Edge of Seventeen; 2015’s was The Diary of a Teenage Girl. Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird is like those films, in that it is an emotional feast about the audacity and the wonder and the horror that is female adolescence the likes of which we oh-so rarely get to see onscreen. It is a nightmare and an adventure that will resonant with...

Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds in Hitman & Bodyguard (2017)
'Hitman's Bodyguard' Tops Weekend with $21M+ Opening as 'Logan Lucky' Falls Short
Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds in Hitman & Bodyguard (2017)
Lionsgate and Summit's action-comedy The Hitman's Bodyguard finished ahead of pre-weekend expectations and took the #1 spot at the weekend box office while WB and New Line's Annabelle: Creation scored a second place finish over its sophomore frame. The weekend wasn't too kind, however, to Bleecker's Logan Lucky, which did manage to finish third, but was unable to crack double digits from over 3,000 locations. As for the weekend overall, the top twelve narrowly escaped becoming the worst weekend of 2017 by less than $1 million by combining for $81.5 million. As of right now, this means the month of August is currently pacing 34% behind August last year while the summer season is pacing 12.8% behind last year. With an estimated $21.6 million, Lionsgate's release of The Hitman's Bodyguard finished #1 at the box office. This outperforms Mojo's pre-release forecast and is just a shade below historical averages for a film of this size and genre from Lionsgate.

Newswire: Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt launch charm offensive in new musical
It’s Friday, so we’re ready to take a load off and celebrate the thwarting of the repeal of the Affordable Care Act. And what better way to kick up our heels than to revel in the news that professional charmers Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are going to combine their powers to put on what could possibly be the most personable musical ever? Variety reports the two affable actors, who last worked together on Stop-Loss, will star in a musical film that Gordon-Levitt will also direct. It won’t be much of a departure for Tatum, who recently starred in Hail, Caesar!, or Gordon-Levitt, who did all kinds of musical things for the now-defunct Pivot.

The film has a working title—Wingmen—and a plot that will center on two pilots (Tatum and Gordon-Levitt) who crash-land in Las Vegas, and presumably have to sing their way out of...

Fifty Shades Darker movie review: where is the fantasy?
MaryAnn’s quick take… Thank god this insult of a movie doesn’t try to fool us into believing that the controlling Christian Grey is appealing. That would be even more horrific… I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): appalled by the popularity of this series

I have read the source material (and I loathe it)

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Happy Valentine’s Day! Feels more like Groundhog Day, though, what with demure idiot Ana Steele jumping right back onto the horrific merry-go-round of her “relationship” with Seattle billionaire Christian Grey. It’s more of the same in Fifty Shades Darker that we saw in the first movie, Fifty Shades of Grey: He does something utterly inappropriate to violate her boundaries as a person, she bites her lip and unconvincingly murmurs “Go away,” he gets even more unpleasantly aggressive, and she gives in to him.

When Did Channing Tatum Start To Rock?
At some point Channing Tatum went from man-candy (what? It's been said) to movie star. His star rose when Step Up stole the hearts of romantic comedy lovers that had waited too long for a new dance film. Seemed like Save The Last Dance had been decades before, despite the fact it actually released only five years prior. But, let's take a look back at Channing's filmography and see exactly where Tatum became something more.

Kimberly Peirce to Direct Holocaust Drama ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’
Kimberly Peirce
We wish we saw more movies from writer-director Kimberly Peirce. One would guess following her excellent directorial debut, the highly acclaimed Boys Don’t Cry, we would’ve seen her direct more features, but it took nine years for us to see her sophomore effort, Stop-Loss. Five years later, she directed the Carrie remake, a movie she had a disagreement or two […]

Kimberly Peirce To Direct WWII Drama ‘Man’s Search For Meaning’
Kimberly Peirce has quietly been putting together a remarkably diverse CV, starting with her breakout, heartbreaking true-story drama “Boys Don’t Cry,” which she followed with the story of young soldiers in “Stop-Loss,” and then the remake of the horror classic “Carrie.” And on the TV side, she’s done everything from the period fare of “Turn” to the computing narratives of “Halt And Catch Fire.” But now she’s gearing up for what might be her biggest project yet.

The Charming Potato and 'Kingsman 2' seem to be a match made in Heaven
Channing Tatum
The Charming Potato is joining the cast of Kingsman: The Golden Circle! I remember the moment Channing Tatum clicked for me. It certainly wasn’t on first exposure. Sometimes I see an actor and immediately like what they’re doing, and when I saw A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints, it was with some early hype about both the director, Dito Montiel, and this amazing new young star, Channing Tatum. Didn’t work for me at all. He was fine in the Step Up films, but that’s because the dancing was front and center. Films like Dear John or Stop-Loss did nothing to change my opinion of Tatum, and in a few cases, like G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra or The Eagle, I thought his presence actually damaged the overall movie. For me, the first sign that he might actually be worth paying attention to was The Dilemma,...

Tatum, Levitt Team For Musical Comedy
Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are re-teaming up for a currently untitled R-rated musical comedy at Universal Pictures from "Wicked" producer Marc Platt.

Both actors are attached to star in the film which Gordon-Levitt came up with the idea for and enlisted Michael Bacall to pen the script. Bacall previously worked with Gordon-Levitt on "Manic" and Tatum on the "21 Jump Street" films, whilst the two actors previously worked together on "Havoc" and "Stop-Loss".

All that's known about the story is that it features two pilots on a misadventure. Platt, Tatum, Gordon-Levitt, Adam Siegel, Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan will produce.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Channing Tatum Unite For Musical Comedy
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Channing Tatum have been friends for a long time, and they've wanted to make a musical comedy together for a while now. They once had an idea to star in a remake of the classic Frank Sinatra/Marlon Brando musical Guys and Dolls, but it seems like they've moved away from that notion in recent years and have finally found something similar to scratch that itch.

THR reports that the duo — who have worked together on films like Havoc and Stop-Loss — will unite for an "R-rated musical comedy featuring two pilots on a misadventure." Gordon-Levitt and writer Michael Bacall (21 Jump Street, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) came up with the idea together, and Bacall is going to write the screenplay. Tatum and Gordon-Levitt will produce alongside Marc Platt, who turned Wicked into a smash hit on Broadway, and Universal will distribute the still-untitled project.

Tatum, of course,...

Universal’s Untitled Musical Comedy Finds Its Leads In Channing Tatum And Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Following a heated bidding war, Universal has snatched up rights for a new, as-yet-untitled musical comedy, with The Hollywood Reporter learning that the studio has already cast two prominent stars in Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Hail, Caesar! star Channing Tatum.

Reports indicate that the concept for the new project first came to light under Gordon-Levitt, who will produce via his hitRECord Films banner. Other talent involved at this early stage include producers Marc Platt and Adam Siegel, along with Channing Tatum himself, Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan on behalf of Free Association. Details are scarce as to which direction Universal is steering the untitled project, and whether it’s being eyed as a potential franchise in the vein of the studio’s lucrative Pitch Perfect.

Aside from showcasing their musical (read: miming) talents on Spike’s popular Lip Sync Battle, Gordon-Levitt and Tatum first starred opposite one another in Iraq war drama Stop-Loss in 2008. Since then,...

Channing Tatum & Joseph Gordon-Levitt Teaming Up For An R-Rated Musical Comedy
"Hail, Caesar!" opens in theaters today, and I'd venture that by Monday morning, everyone will be talking about Channing Tatum's big musical number. Male Stripper to Movie Star: The Evolution of Channing Tatum
Channing Tatum
"I didn't want to move or act like a rich man. I wanted to dance in a pair of jeans. I wanted to dance like the man in the streets." – Gene Kelly

It's hard to imagine — let alone remember — living in a world where it wasn't a universally acknowledged truth that Channing Tatum used to be a stripper. How Channing Tatum Went from Stripper To Potential Oscar Nominee

When Foxcatcher arrives in theaters this weekend — the dark, true-life drama about the murder of Olympic wrestling champion Dave Schultz (played by Mark Ruffalo) — it may leave you with a looming question, “Wait, is that really Channing Tatum?” No, not just because Tatum — like his co-star Steve Carell (who plays eccentric millionaire and Schultz’s murderer, John du Pont) — is virtually unrecognizable due to the film’s stunning physical transformations. It’s because Tatum, as the tortured Olympic wrestler (and Dave’s brother) Mark Schultz, reaches staggering new heights as an actor.

The star of Step Up, White House Down, 21 Jump Street, and Magic Mike, among others, not only turns out one of this year’s most harrowing performances, but one of the very best. Even Tatum’s biggest naysayers (yes, they exist) will be blown away by the actor’s emotionally and physically daunting work in Foxcatcher.

Ryan Phillippe, Abbie Cornish, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Channing Tatum in Stop-Loss (2008)
‘Boys Don’t Cry’ Director Kimberly Peirce Signs With Verve
Ryan Phillippe, Abbie Cornish, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Channing Tatum in Stop-Loss (2008)
Exclusive: Verve has signed Kimberly Peirce, the Boys Don’t Cry and Stop-Loss helmer who most recently directed the Carrie remake. She also signed with Britton Rizzio of Circle of Confusion as her manager, and stays with attorney Alan Wertheimer. She had been at CAA.

The writer-director made her filmmaking debut with 1999’s Boys Don’t Cry, which earned an Oscar for Hilary Swank and a nomination for Chloe Sevigny. Peirce followed with Stop-Loss, the hot button film that starred Ryan Phillippe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Channing Tatum. That was released in 2008, and last year she helmed Carrie, the remake of the Stephen King novel adaptation that starred Julianne Moore and Chloe Grace Moretz, and introduced Ansel Elgort, who followed with The Fault In Our Stars. While Peirce is very selective in the films she directs, she made an overall deal at ABC studios where she has several projects in development,...

Spotlight on the Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt
This week, I’m turning my attention and the spotlight in the title of this article to one of my favorite actors working today…Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It’s hard to find anyone who doesn’t appreciate this talented multihyphenate. The rare child actor to successfully transition into a respected adult performer, Gordon-Levitt is widely considered to be one of the best young actors that we have in the business. He’s constantly chosen interesting projects and almost never does anything you’d consider to be just a paycheck job. He’s yet to receive an Academy Award nomination, but one suspects that it’s only a matter of time in that regard. Gordon-Levitt got his start at a young age, first working in television at the tender age of just seven. He’d continue with small parts on the small screen up until he got a few tiny roles in films,...

Channing Tatum Looks Dangerous In First Poster For Foxcatcher
Channing Tatum has had an interesting and surprisingly varied career over the years. Beginning as a street dancer in the Step Up films, he went on to become a lovable lug in 21 Jump Street and its sequel, proving that he could keep up with the comic timing of Jonah Hill. But despite some forays into dramatic acting with Magic Mike and Stop-Loss, Tatum has yet to prove that he can really carry a central dramatic part. That appears to be changing with the release of Bennett Miller’s wrestling drama Foxcatcher, which recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to generally positive reviews.

Foxcatcher tells the true story of John du Pont (Steve Carell), the millionaire who provided wrestling facilities for the David and Mark Schultz (Mark Ruffalo and Tatum respectively) to train for the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Things turned tragic, however, as a bizarre psychological power play developed between...

Channing Tatum, Ralph Fiennes & Tilda Swinton Join George Clooney In The Coens' 'Hail Caesar'
So maybe let's start this with a hat tip to Channing Tatum and how far he's come. From that guy in the "Step Up" movie, the actor made steady moves to work with directors of note, taking roles in films by Kimberly Peirce ("Stop-Loss"), Michael Mann ("Public Enemies"), Ron Howard ("The Dilemma"), Kevin Macdonald ("The Eagle"), Steven Soderbergh ("Haywire," "Side Effects," "Magic Mike") and Bennett Miller ("Foxcatcher"), and that's not to mention becoming the star of franchises like "G.I. Joe" and "21 Jump Street." And so, don't be surprised that the Coens have tapped the actor for their next film. Indeed, the Coens have rounded up Tatum, Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes to join George Clooney in "Hail Caesar." The story will follow a fixer in the 1950s who works for Hollywood studios to protect their stars, with Tatum to play a Gene Kelly-esque actor, Fiennes a...

"Carrie" Director Kimberly Peirce Talks Pig's Blood, On-Set Injuries & That Crazy Alternate Ending!
Director Kimberly Peirce is taking the horror genre by storm with the remake of the cult classic, "Carrie." The movie, which is now out on Blu-ray and DVD, centers on a bullied teenage girl (played by Chloe Grace Moretz) who discovers that she has telekinetic powers and decides to dish out retribution against her tormentors, including her abusive mother (played by Julianne Moore). From her directorial debut with "Boys Don't Cry," the tragic story of Brandon Teena, to the Iraq war drama "Stop-Loss," "Carrie" presented Peirce with a different set of challenges -- re-telling a story that had already been made famous by Stephen King’s novel and Brian De Palma's iconic film. But, Peirce brought her own perspective and insight as a woman to the movie, creating her own version that she calls a "superhero origin story."toofab's Rachel Hoffman sat down with Peirce this week to talk...

Carrie Review
With just two previous productions to her name across the past 14 years (Boys Don’t Cry, Stop-Loss), director Kimberly Peirce’s latest endeavour is the somewhat contentious decision to adapt Stephen King’s renowned novel Carrie. Though it should be taken into account that this feature is a mere adaptation as opposed to a remake, given the iconic status of Brian De Palma’s cult favourite, 1976 offering, the validity of this entire reimagining comes with some justifiably raised eyebrows.

The title role is taken on by Chloë Grace Moretz, as a young girl ostracised by her peers at school and bullied for her unique and peculiar personality, certainly not helped along by her deranged upbringing, where she shares a damaged relationship with her spiritual mother Margaret (Julianne Moore). When an incident in the changing rooms after gym class – involving bullies Sue (Gabriella Wilde) and Chris (Portia Doubleday) – turns the school on Carrie’s side,...

Carrie review: women who hate women
I’m struck by the perversity of a story four decades old about religious misogyny and basic feminism and the perniciousness of bullying that still feels fresh and relevant… I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): wondering why this movie needed to be remade

I have read the source material (and I like it)

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

The first question to ask is this: Why? Why remake a classic film from a 40-year-old novel? I wondered about that from the moment I first heard we were getting Carrie again… and particularly why director Kimberly Peirce (Stop-Loss) would be interested in this. And now that I’ve finally seen it, the thing I’m most struck by is the perversity of how a story from four decades back about religious misogyny and the necessity of the most basic form of feminism...
