Another award-winning film headed out the Netflix doors is “American Hustle.” Some other big upsets this month are “The Blind Side” and the original “Paddington.”

‘Jingle Jangle’: The Lack of Diversity in ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ Inspired Netflix’s Christmas Classic
Image
Writer-director David E. Talbert’s new film, “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey,” is a Netflix musical set in the vibrant fictional town of Cobbleton, and follows renowned toymaker Jeronicus Jangle (Forest Whitaker) whose whimsical inventions are wondrous. But when his apprentice (Keegan-Michael Key) steals his most prized creation, it’s up to his precocious granddaughter (Madalen Mills) to retrieve all that has been lost. Twenty-two years in the making, it’s an ambitious spectacle that’s unlike anything Talbert — whose previous film credits include dramedies “First Sunday” (2008), “Baggage Claim,” and “Almost Christmas” — has ever done before.

“If you look at my catalog before ‘Jingle Jangle,’ it’s hard to say [that] this same guy was going to do this expensive, epic, visual effects-heavy, period musical, but these are the kinds of films that I watched growing up. It’s always been in me to do it, but I just never had a path to get here,...

Tim Story at an event for Think Like a Man : Soyez une femme, pensez comme un homme (2012)
Tom and Jerry director Tim Story is being sued after a 2-year old boy drowned in his hot tub. The tragedy happened back in November 2019. According to court documents, the child's father, Miguel Raygoza-Castillo, is suing over the incident, which happened at Story's Los Angeles home. Raygoza-Castillo's son reportedly got into the backyard, where he was able to gain access to the hot tub. The 2-year old fell into the hot tub and was later found unresponsive and taken to the hospital where he fought for his life for 4 days.

Miguel Raygoza-Castillo and his family had to make the difficult decision to take their son off of life support during that 4-day stint at the hospital. Raygoza-Castillo is now suing Tim Story for not having the proper residential pool security equipment, which led to the accident occurring. It's not clear how Raygoza-Castillo and Story know each other. It's also unclear...

‘P-Valley’: Loretta Devine To Recur In Starz’s Strip Club Drama Series
Loretta Devine
Exclusive: Grey’s Anatomy alumna Loretta Devine is set to recur opposite Brandee Evans and Nicco Annan in Starz’s P-Valley, Katori Hall’s strip club drama based on her play Pussy Valley.

Created by Hall, who also showruns, the drama is set down deep in the Mississippi Delta, where lies an oasis of grit and glitter in a rough patch of human existence where beauty can be hard to find. The Southern-fried hourlong drama tells the kaleidoscopic story of a little-strip-club-that-could and the big characters who come through its doors: the hopeful, the lost, the broken, the ballers, the beautiful, and the damned. Trap music meets film noir in this lyrical and atmospheric series that dares to ask what happens when small-town folk dream beyond the boundaries of the Piggly Wiggly and the pawn shop.

Devine will play the Granmuva of Uncle Clifford and former proprietress of The Pynk.

Almost Christmas Review
It seems like every year some studio releases a harmless yet predictable holiday comedy centering on an ensemble cast of recognizable actors (usually as disparate members of a family) in an effort to capitalize on the “most wonderful time of the year.” Films like last year’s Love the Coopers and Christmas with the Kranks are smart investments for production companies because of their broad appeal and moderate budgets. So, naturally, 2016 isn’t without its own edition of this reliable trend. Fans of those films should then be quite pleased with this year’s model: Almost Christmas.

The movie – written and directed by David E. Talbert (First Sunday) – centers on Walter Meyers (Danny Glover), the patriarch of a dysfunctional family. Just days before the first Christmas after his wife’s death, Walter attempts to reunite his children for the holidays. Busy with their own lives and still processing the grief of their mother’s passing,...

Film Review: Almost Christmas
It’s almost Christmas so, fittingly, family holiday films trim our multiplexes and fill our stockings. First out of the gate this year is the creatively titled dramedy Almost Christmas, a well-intentioned but at times lackluster foray into five days in the life of a particularly effusive family.

Danny Glover’s Wayne Meyers is the patriarch at the center of the story, and he is surrounded by four children and some of their spouses, and the array of rivalries, dreams, and regrets that they bring to the dinner table. The family losses the mother figure at the open, and she casts a pall across them—in ways good and sad—throughout the movie and the Holiday season.

There is tenderness in the premise, which carries through symbolically as the family has misplaced the absent mother’s cooking recipes and is figuratively and literally lost without them. Along the journey, which...

Rob Leane Oct 28, 2016

Looking ahead to the movies heading to cinemas in time for Christmas...

The festive season is a great time to go to the pictures. There’s nothing quite like taking solace when it’s cold outside by cramming in with some like-minded folk to see a (hopefully) great movie.

Unsurprisingly, Hollywood studios have cottoned on to this. Year on year, there seems to more and more choice at the cinema come Christmas time. It’s almost like a second summer season, in terms of the sheer volume of major movies on offer. This isn’t likely to change any time soon, especially when you look at the cash banked by Star Wars: The Force Awakens last Christmas. And that's not to mention the festive season's nearness to the Oscar race, which means that the major movies keep coming well into January.

There are many movies rocking around the multiplex during this Yuletide,...

The Broad Green Layoffs: Why Good Movies Aren’t Enough to Avoid The Startup Curse
When Wall Street billionaires Gabriel Hammond, 37, and his brother, Daniel, 33, launched independent producer-distributor Broad Green Pictures two summers ago, Hollywood was skeptical about its prospects. In a time when even the Weinsteins are struggling to survive, it was a strange time to reinvent a dying economic model.

Now Broad Green is laying off around 6 percent of its staff, all of whom work in the publicity department, the company confirmed to IndieWire. Broad Green’s publicity head Adam Keen, a former Warner Bros. publicity exec, has resigned. Marketing and communications personnel are traditionally the first casualties of cutbacks in Hollywood.

The layoffs were unsurprising. Ken Kwapis’s Sundance comedy “A Walk in the Woods” starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte managed $30 million, but that couldn’t counterbalance films like Ramin Bahrani’s well-reviewed real estate thriller “99 Homes” ($1.7 million domestic) and Sarah Silverman’s depressive drama “I Smile Back” ($58K). Now, the...

Friday Dad Reynaldo Rey Dies at 75
Ice Cube
Reynaldo Rey was born to make people laugh. The veteran entertainer, who spent years opening for Redd Foxx and then became best known for playing the father of one of Ice Cube's bumbling pals in Friday, died Thursday morning, EW.com reports. He was 75. Per TMZ, which was first with the sad news, Rey passed away at a Los Angeles hospital where he was being treated for complications of a stroke he suffered last year. Rey stole his scenes as the nameless dad of DJ Pooh's Red ("Red's father" was the part) in the hit 1995 comedy Friday and he would reunite with Ice Cube later in 2008's First Sunday. The Oklahoma-born comedian's big-screen credits also included White Men...

Interview: Think Like A Man Too’s Regina Hall & Terrence J
Director Tim Story’s Think Like A Man Too opens in theaters next Friday on June 20. The film is the follow-up to the hit ensemble comedy Think Like A Man, which Story also directed and earned over $96 million at the worldwide box office.

In the sequel, which was inspired by Steve Harvey’s best-selling book Act Like a Lady, Think Like A Man, all the couples are back for a wedding in Las Vegas. But plans for a romantic weekend go awry when their various misadventures get them into some compromising situations that threaten to derail the big event.

Screen Gems’ Think Like A Man Too reunites the original cast, including Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Jerry Ferrara, Regina Hall, Gabrielle Union, Terrence J and Taraji P. Henson.

As part of a lively roundtable discussion, Wamg sat down with two of the film’s stars, Regina Hall and Terrence J to talk about the sequel.

'Baggage Claim' Interview with Jenifer Lewis and David E. Talbert | Exclusive
David E. Talbert
While novel adaptations are nothing new in this day and age, it's still rare to find a novelist who has made the transition from author to filmmaker. David E. Talbert (First Sunday) is one of the few exceptions, as he both wrote the screenplay adaptation for his own novel and directed the new comedy Baggage Claim, which was released earlier this month on Blu-ray and DVD. Paula Patton stars as flight attendant Montana Moore, who goes on a whirlwind journey over 30 days to find the perfect fiancee before her younger sister gets married. I recently had the chance to chat with writer-director David E. Talbert and actress Jenifer Lewis, who plays Montana's mother Catherine, about the logistical challenges of the production, how the filmmaker adapted his own work, and what made the actress sign on to join this all-star cast. Take a look at our exclusive interview with Jenifer Lewis...

Lego Movie edifice growing for third week, with Non-Stop static at No 2
Oscars buzz boosts UK box office and whether growling on a plane or voicing an animation, it's Liam Neeson's moment

• Review of The Lego Movie

• Review of Non-Stop

• More on the UK box office

The winner

Adding another £4.79m in the past seven days, The Lego Movie now stands at a sturdy £26.67m after three weeks of play. That puts it level with the lifetime tallies of blockbusters including Spider-Man 2 (£26.72m) and Ocean's Eleven (£26.47m), and ahead of fellow animations including Ratatouille (£24.80m) and Wall-e (£22.91m). The Lego Movie will pretty soon overtake the likes of Shrek (£29m) and A Bug's Life (£29.45m) and is clearly headed into the mid-30s (£m).

Although box office for The Lego Movie is certainly skewed to the weekend, its decent performance in the Monday-to-Thursday period suggests that it is picking up a true adult audience, rather than merely adult chaperones of children.

Box Office Predictions: 'Jack Ryan', 'Ride Along', 'Devil's Due' and 'Nut Job' Battle Oscar Nominees
I'm a little pressed for time this morning so today's write-up will be a little abbreviated, so let's quickly take a look at the weekend's new releases. Ride Along starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube is my pick at number one as I'm going with a flat $20 million for the three-day weekend, with First Sunday as my comparison. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit isn't very good, but it's being advertised everywhere and I know more than one person that told me they wanted to see it. $18 million is my number, though I could end up being high. The Nut Job is one of the worst animated films in ages, truly awful, but that won't keep everyone away. I'm giving it $9.6 million based on being a family film alone, those poor kids. Lastly, the unscreened horror, Devil's Due. This is the time of year for horror to scoop up, but Devil's Due is barely on anyone's radar,...

‘Baggage Claim’ Director’s Secret Weapons: Gay Adam Brody and His Wife’s Crazy Stories
David E. Talbert
When David E. Talbert entered the editing room after shooting his debut movie, “First Sunday,” he realized he had a lot to learn about how to direct a movie. Talbert came to Hollywood from the world of theater, where he is widely respected as a playwright and director. Yet while theater directors rely on what they see with their eyes, movie directors rely on the varied perspectives a camera offers. So before he made his second movie, “Baggage Claim,” he took a crash course in romantic comedies with fellow directors Tim Story and Bill Duke. He also listened in on his.

First Trailer and Poster for Baggage Claim Starring Paula Patton, Taye Diggs, and Adam Brody
Fox Searchlight has released the first trailer and poster for director David E. Talbert’s (First Sunday) romantic comedy Baggage Claim. The film stars Paula Patton as an unmarried flight attendant who becomes determined to find a man before her younger sister’s wedding. In order to aid her on her quest, her friends at the airport arrange several of her ex-boyfriends to cross her path. Though the “I need a man to make me feel whole” premise is rather played out and at least a little offensive, Baggage Claim actually looks like it has a few genuine laughs in store for audiences. Also, Adam Brody plays the “gay best friend” character, so there’s that. Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Derek Luke, Taye Diggs, Jill Scott, Boris Kodjoe, Trey Songz, Tia Mowry, Lala Anthony, and Djimon Hounsou. Baggage Claim opens on September 27th.
