Coming-of-age drama “Penelope,” produced by Duplass Brothers Productions, is set to launch on pay TV platform Sky and streaming service Now in the U.K. and Ireland, following a deal with Fremantle.
The eight-part series, created by Mark Duplass (“The Morning Show”) and Mel Eslyn, follows Penelope, played by Megan Stott, a 16-year-old who feels out of place in modern society and is drawn into the unknown wilderness, where she begins to form a new life for herself.
Penelope is caught up in the modern world’s technology, pacing and pressure, but something is missing, and things feel off, she can’t quite put it into words. On the surface, her life seems pretty great, while inside, there’s a fierceness that’s been brewing, a calling towards a new way of being.
After a chance encounter with a wolf and a rabbit on a school camping trip, the call...

Bridgerton is one of Netflix's hit series, based on Julia Quinn's bestselling book series of the same name. The series, set in Regency-era London, follows the titular family and its children on their journey to find love.
The series, which premiered on Netflix in 2020, follows an anthology-like format, switching the main characters every season to allow every Bridgerton sibling to get their chance at glory. The show kicked off with Phoebe Dynevor's Daphne Bridgerton, the second-oldest child and the eldest daughter, and Regé-Jean Page's Simon Bassett. The latter recently addressed whether he would be willing to reprise his role as the Duke of Hastings in a new interview with Entertainment Tonight.
While promoting his latest film, the spy thriller Black Bag, the actor was asked about returning to Bridgerton. Although the romance series follows a different main couple every season, most of the other characters return to reprise their roles,...

If there’s one thing Mark Duplass hates, it’s “mandates.” He heard that maddening word a lot when he was pitching his latest show “The Long Long Night.”
“The Long Long Night,” which Duplass co-created and stars in with his old friend Barret O’Brien, has been sitting without distribution or a streaming deal since it premiered at Tribeca last year. It’s a series about two dudes who want to help the world but realize they’re just two white males taking up space, so they decide the only way to make the world a better place is to take themselves out of it. Predictably, no streamers were biting.
But Duplass has had enough, and he’s finally going to release the series himself.
“I wish we could program this, but it’s just not in our mandate. That fucking word ‘mandates,'” Duplass told IndieWire. “They have mandates,...

Exclusive: Following an extensive auditioning process, rising star Austin Abrams has landed the lead role in 20th Century’s adaptation of the Daniel Kraus novel Whalefall, with Brian Duffield directing. Duffield will co-write the script with Kraus.
The film is described as The Martian meets 127 Hours, centering on a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains who gets swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. After giving up on life, the young man is surprised to find a reason to live in the most dangerous and unlikely of places.
Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody and Allan Mandelbaum are producing. Mandelbaum brought the book into Imagine and previously produced Duffield’s No One Will Save You (for 20th Century Studios). Duffield will also produce.

No streaming service does a director retrospective like the Criterion Channel, and March offers two masters at opposite ends of exposure. On one side is Michael Mann, whose work from Thief through Collateral (minus The Keep) is given a spotlight; on the other is Alain Guiraudie, who (in advance of Misericordia opening on March 21) has five films arriving. (2001’s duet of That Old Dream That Moves and Sunshine for the Scoundrels have perhaps never streamed in the U.S. before.) Meanwhile, three noirs from Douglas Sirk are programmed alongside a Lee Chang-dong retrospective that features three new restorations.
Showcases will be staged for Dogme 95, Best Supporting Actor winners, and French Poetic Relaism. Welles’ The Trial gets a Criterion Edition alongside Demon Pond; Horace Ové’s newly restored Pressure makes a streaming premiere alongside spruced-up copies of Amadeus, Love Is the Devil, Port of Shadows, and Burning an Illusion, as...

Exclusive: Corbin Bernsen (Clipped) has wrapped production on Woodstockers, an indie TV pilot for which he wrote the original draft, in which he stars opposite Stephen Tobolowsky (Nobody Wants This).
The original logline for the dark generational comedy teased the story of “two guys who went to Woodstock in ’69 and never left,” with Bernsen and Tobolowsky respectively playing friends Lenny Baker and Cal Reddick. But per Bernsen, who relocated to the Hudson Vally six years ago, “Early on I had the good fortune to connect with Michael Lang, one of the original organizers of Woodstock, and quickly discovered a deeper story about the 60’s and a generation who espoused ‘Love and Peace,’ but failed in their early attempts to ‘change the world.’ At the same time, I witnessed a new generation dusting off the “hippie” mantra and giving it their own spin.”

Cooper Raiff’s film “Cha Cha Real Smooth” sold to Apple for $15 million in 2022, but his wasn’t the first, nor the last to notch such a deal at a festival. That’s not to say it was easy, but with Raiff’s new project, he doesn’t even have that track record to fall back on.
Raiff’s latest project is “Hal & Harper,” an 8-part dramedy series being presented in Sundance’s Episodic section. The series stars Lili Reinhart, Mark Ruffalo, Betty Gilpin, and Raiff, and is one of the higher profile series to ever play in Park City. The rub is, there’s very little precedent for an Episodic project to find a distributor on the sales market at Sundance. People aren’t coming to Sundance with a pot of money set aside to buy shows the way they are with movies. And for all the idiosyncratic series out there,...

While we were eager to tell you last year about Sundance premieres starring Kristen Stewart and Pedro Pascal, the unlikely “Thelma” became the true indie success story of 2024. Unexpected buyer Magnolia Pictures turned the June Squibb film into a hit, opening the doors for other buyers to take their own risks this year.
Heading into 2025, uniqueness is the name of the game, as is picking out the discovery that you won’t see coming, and not necessarily the movie with the big cast, commercial pedigree, or crowdpleaser premise. Last year, we were pretty spot on with “A Real Pain” and “My Old Ass” surviving the long haul, and we were among the few to tell you about “It’s What’s Inside” before Netflix plunked down $17 million to buy it; we were way off on a few others.

It has been announced that Christopher Nolan's next movie will be an adaptation of The Odyssey, with this being the acclaimed director's incredibly exciting follow-up to Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan's adaptation of The Odyssey has only had a few details about it revealed, such as the fact that it will be filmed for IMAX, will release in 2026, and features a cast of Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong'o. While a faithful adaptation of The Odyssey is exciting, it isn't the first time that Christopher Nolan has told this type of story.
The Odyssey is one of the most famous stories of all time, with it being one of the cornerstones of storytelling. The Odyssey is known for being the perfect example of the Hero's Journey, a story structure that has been used in countless movies, books, plays, TV shows, and more throughout human history.

Two decades after its theatrical release, Bobby Cannavale revisits the path that led to creating the critically acclaimed film The Station Agent. During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Cannavale reveals that the creation of The Station Agent lingered for four years, primarily due to Peter Dinklage's casting.
Written and directed by Tom McCarthy (in his feature directorial debut), The Station Agent centers on Dinklage's Finbar McBride, a man with dwarfism who inherits an abandoned train station in a small New Jersey town. There, he meets Joe Oramas (Cannavale), a hot dog vendor, and Olivia Harris (Patricia Clarkson), an artist, and the three develop a close friendship. At the time, Dinklage wasn't an "A-list-type" actor, so studios were looking to recast him; according to Cannavale, studios also wanted to do away with one of the film's central points: Fin's dwarfism.
"I remember everything about that movie, because it took forever to get made,...

After Netflix released the Bridgerton season 4 cast list and Simone Ashley (who plays Kate) wasn't on it, many became worried about whether she would return, seeing that the show undoubtedly needs Kate. The good news is that Ashley will reprise her role as Kate in the cast of Bridgerton season 4, quelling fans' fears. It's still unclear how much of a role Kate will have in Benedict's season. However, the hope is that Ashley's character will have a significant presence in the upcoming Bridgerton episodes, given her importance to the story.

Hulu’s adaptation of Little Fires Everywhere premiered at the very beginning of the 2020 Covid lockdown, and although it was nominated for several big Emmys that fall, the miniseries has become very fuzzy in my memory. One thing I do remember, however, is that in selecting the daughters of Reese Witherspoon’s character, the casting team found a pair of young actresses — Jade Pettyjohn and Megan Stott — who absolutely bore an uncanny resemblance to Reese Witherspoon.
Actually, I’d forgotten even that detail before sitting down to watch the new Netflix drama Penelope and immediately recognizing Stott — in large part because, if you’re going to make what is essentially an eight-part YA version of Wild, selecting a certifiable Reese Witherspoon doppelgänger as your lead makes a lot of sense.
Presumably, it isn’t wholly a coincidence. Penelope was created by Mark Duplass, who co-stars with Witherspoon on The Morning Show,...

Mark Duplass has always been at the forefront of the independent film movement. Whether it’s acting, directing, writing, or producing, Duplass does his best to keep things simple and not be beholden to anyone. While speaking with IndieWire’s Vincent Perella on the Emmys red carpet, the “Morning Show” nominee shared how he’s trying to bring the ethos of indie film projects like “Creep” and “Creep 2” into television with his upcoming TV series “Penelope,” as well his upcoming collaboration with Shudder, “The Creep Tapes.” If anyone can make indie TV have a true renaissance, it’s Duplass.

Mark Duplass and Mel Eslyn are venturing into the wilderness with teen runaway tale “Penelope.”
The independently-financed series, which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, has found a home at Netflix. Duplass Brothers’ production banner head Eslyn is the showrunner of the series, which she co-wrote with Mark Duplass. “Little Fires Everywhere” alum Megan Stott leads the show.
The official synopsis reads: “Feeling out of place in the modern world, 16-year-old Penelope (Stott) finds herself almost cosmically drawn to nature. With no plan in place, she leaves her family behind for the beguiling wilderness of Washington State, where she begins to establish a different kind of life for herself. As Penelope forges an alternative life for herself, survivalism and coming-of-age go hand-in-hand as she learns by trial and error.”

September means networks are rolling out the good stuff following the summer blahs, and Netflix’s September offerings are no exception.
In addition to “The Perfect Couple” (see below) the streamer’s September offerings include “Emily in Paris” Season 4 Part 2, starring Lily Collins, as well as the downright charming “Nobody Wants This,” a unique rom-com starring millennial aughts TV gods Adam Brody and Kristen Bell — this one will be all over your social media feed, so make sure to binge it the second it drops.
On the movie front, in addition to a slew of old favorites, film fanatics’ best bet is likely “His Three Daughters,” a festival fave starring Elisabeth Olsen, Carrie Coon, and Natasha Lyonne. The film, about three very different siblings coming together in their father’s dying days, is expected to be a major awards contender after premiering at TIFF last year.

Netflix has set “Penelope,” a coming-of-age series from Duplass Brothers Productions, for a Sept. 24 premiere in the U.S.
The series is led by Megan Stott (“Little Fires Everywhere”), who plays the title role. Per the official logline, Penelope is “a 16-year-old girl who, feeling deeply out of place in her contemporary surroundings, leaves her life and family behind and treks into the wilds of Washington State. Mark Duplass co-created the series with showrunner Mel Eslyn (“Biosphere”), president of Duplass Brothers Productions, which independently financed “Penelope” before taking it to Netflix. The project is the flagship of their new focus on indie television in response to the decline of Peak TV.

Warning: contains spoilers for Time Bandits (1981) & (2024) episodes one & two.
“Strong language, self-harm references & violence. This programme isn’t suitable for younger viewers,” is the warning from Channel4.com to anybody currently wishing to stream Terry Gilliam’s 1981 fantasy adventure film Time Bandits in the UK. Despite the film’s “G” (all ages admitted) rating, the streamer asks viewers to confirm that they’re over the age of 16 before it will play.
An overreaction, or fair dos, in light of the film’s meaty battle scenes and famously bleak ending?
The Original Time Bandits Ending
In the film’s final scenes, 11-year-old Kevin (Craig Warnock) awakens in his own bed following a series of perilous adventures through history with a band of time-travelling wannabe thieves played by actors with dwarfism.

Sir Phillip's color palette hints at his eventual marriage to Eloise, following the trend of Bridgerton family members' wardrobe choices. Despite slight storyline changes, Sir Phillip and Eloise's relationship on the show still aligns with the original books, ensuring consistency. While Eloise and Sir Phillip may have met under different circumstances, their reconciliation should still be a key plot point in Bridgerton season 4.
Netflix's swoon-worthy romance series Bridgerton has made some interesting changes to the literary source material, but I don't think it will alter Eloise's storyline and nor should it. The show focuses on a romance plot for each of the siblings in the Bridgerton family tree, with the emphasis so far on Daphne, Anthony, and Colin Bridgerton's romances. This leaves Eloise, Benedict, Francesca, Hyacinth, and Gregory Bridgerton still awaiting their time to shine. While previous storylines have been changed for dramatic effect, I believe Eloise's would actually benefit from a faithful adaptation.

At the end of Eyes Wide Shut, Dr. Bill Harford and his wife Alice come together in that most normative of spaces: an Fao Schwarz toy store. As they watch their daughter look at potential presents, Bill feebly tries to explain his sexual sojourn through the city we just watched, one prompted by Alice’s confession of lust for a random sailor. Upon the completion of Bill’s story, Alice declares, “There is something we need to do as soon as possible.” What’s that, her husband and the audience asks? Fuck.”
The camera holds on her face for a beat or two and then cuts to black. End of movie.
Between Nicole Kidman’s percussive line delivery, Tom Cruise’s bewildered expression, and the sudden cut to credits, Alice’s statement feels definitive. Yet, like every other part of Eyes Wide Shut, Stanley Kubrick’s final film, the word is both precise and beguiling,...

Penelope's Lady Whistledown reveal is a major problem, risking her safety and power. By losing her anonymity, Penelope loses her influence over the ton's behavior. Bridgerton missed an easy solution by not confiding in Queen Charlotte to avoid the fallout.
In Bridgerton season 3's finale, Penelope reveals that she is Lady Whistledown, and though she is finally free from the burden of her secret, I'm not entirely sure if this was the smartest move. Penelope's Lady Whistledown secret has been a ticking time bomb since Bridgerton season 1. However, I've always believed it was a good secret to keep. Lady Whistledown adds a layer of entertainment to the period drama; she is both narrator and plot device. Therefore, I feared what would happen to Lady Whistledown during Penelope's season. Now, the worst has transpired.

To no one’s surprise and everyone’s delight, the first song that played on the red carpet for the “Bridgerton” Season 3 – Part 2 premiere in London June 12 was the orchestral cover of Pitbull’s “Give Me Everything.”

The highly anticipated season 3 part 1 recently arrived on Netflix, adapting the fourth novel in Julia Quinn's Bridgerton series, Romancing Mister Bridgerton. Can television have its own New Hollywood moment?
Much like movies such as Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, Rosemary’s Baby and Easy Rider took the late 1960s by storm, a group of writers and directors are hoping that their own independent TV projects can break through and find their way to the small screen amidst the current Hollywood contraction.
After a number of web series such as Issa Rae’s The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl, Broad City and High Maintenance were turned into TV series over the past decade, writers and directors hoped that this would lead to more.
However, the rise of streaming originals saw the business go the other way, with incredibly expensive dramas and comedies, often led by movie stars, taking over. This trend is now waning and a new generation of creators hopes that cost-conscious companies will now pay more attention to their projects instead.

Actor and filmmaker Mark Duplass has found distribution for his independent TV series “Penelope,” with Netflix picking up U.S. distribution rights for the young-adult series. He made the announcement of the pickup for the self-financed series’ eight-episode first season on Sunday at SeriesFest. It previously debuted at the Sundance Film Festival.
The deal includes Mark and brother Jay’s production company retaining control of the property, including the decision over whether they will greenlight a second season. The brothers are also retaining VOD rental rights as they sell the indie series both domestically and internationally.
Duplass wrote the project over the pandemic and, in an unusual move, chose to self-finance and produce the show when he wasn’t able to find financing for its creation. He cocreated the series with director Mel Eslyn.
The actor and filmmaker described the industry as being in a “Reaganomic” period at this time,...

Penelope, the pandemic-written, independently financed and produced young-adult series from co-creators Mark Duplass and Mel Eslyn, has landed a distributor.
Netflix acquired U.S. rights to the series’ eight-episode first season, the duo announced Sunday while appearing at SeriesFest. Duplass called the six-month process of finding a distributor for the show following its debut at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival “insane” and told the Denver crowd that “a lot of people were very, very interested” in the series and thus “had a lot of different kinds of offers.”
“We’ve done independent films before, where you have a few hundred thousand dollars, and we go out, make the film and sell it. There really isn’t a model yet of independently made television where you make the whole season and try to sell it,” he said of the process of independently funding and then distributing Penelope. “From taking out the show...

As quiet moments turn into clashes, they navigate through their awkwardness and are forced to learn to work together. This is Man’s feature directorial debut.
“I’ve been working closely with Jeff Man for 13 years on everything I’ve created, and I’m so thrilled to now be a part of his feature film debut,” Jay Duplass said.

“Euphoria” star Austin Abrams believes his days of playing high school kids are behind him.
In an interview with IndieWire at the 2024 Sarasota Film Festival about his new fraternity hazing drama “The Line” from director Ethan Berger, Abrams, now 27, said that while he might still get some parts like that in “The Line” that place him in college, it’d be a stretch to see him playing a high schooler again.
“I can’t really do it anymore,” he told IndieWire of playing such a younger character. “Yeah, definitely. It’s just like at this point, I’m not really a service to the project anymore. I mean, I just can’t do that. College, kind of. I don’t really feel like that. But yeah.”
While he broke out as a teenager on “Euphoria,” it’s been over two years since the second season of that show ended. Now...

Bridgerton’s steamiest Season 3 scenes will definitely be Nsfw (not safe for work), but apparently they’re also Nsfncp (not safe for Nicola Coughlan’s parents).
The upcoming season of the Netflix series will follow Coughlan’s Penelope and Luke Newton’s Colin as they fight their feelings while falling hopelessly in love. And, according to the Julia Quinn novels on which the series is based, things will get pretty saucy. (Get a sneak peek.)

There are different levels of magic in the fantasy genre. Low fantasy stories take place in the real world but have magical elements, like witchcraft or werewolves. On the other hand, magical realism interweaves whimsy and subtle magic into everyday life, such as enchantments that come from eating a person's home-cooked food.
Sometimes the line between magic and romance feels quite thin. Romance, magic, whimsy, and spellwork have dovetailed together into many charming stories, resulting in a more grounded take on many popular fairy tales, as well as some original stories by various talented directors.
