- While Danny's father and mother independently search for love, Danny is on his own desperate quest to find a prom date. Danny's search becomes progressively more pathetic once he and his family learn that Bart, the school's biggest dweeb, not only secured a date for the prom, but got a hotel room as well.
- Danny Stein is a high-school senior and class vice president; he's in charge of the prom, along with Camille, his best friend for years. Everyone including Camille and her parents assumes that Danny will ask her to the prom, but he wants something less platonic and more romantic - more memorable. His choices include the sophomore cheerleader he drives to school, a friend of a friend, and a quiet Chinese girl in his classes. With his parents' help (they're going through a divorce), he gets the tickets, rents a tux, reserves a limo, and, over his mother's objections, gets a room at the prom-site hotel. This, everyone believes, is the way to establish memories. Will anything work out?—<jhailey@hotmail.com>
- For Danny Stein (Steven J. Kaplan), a high school student in Hollywood, Florida, the imminence of the prom is the source of considerable distress. Even more distressing is the prospect of booking of a hotel room for himself and his date at the end of the evening. Danny is the organizer of the prom and there is a lot of pressure from his family as well, as some of his grand parents say that they lost their virginity at prom. Prom is 2 months away. Gertie (Katie McClellan) is on the organizing committee with Danny, but is upset as Danny keeps ignoring her ideas.
With his parents embroiled in a messy divorce, Danny is left to navigate the complexities of high school life on his own. Craig (Brandon Hardesty) is Danny's best friend.
Problem is, Danny (who is a bit of an awkward person, but far from a total loser), doesn't have a date yet. The obvious choice is his best friend Camille (Alia Shawkat), who is available and clearly interested, but Danny thinks he can do better say, with Alice (Ashley Benson), the sophomore hottie and cheerleader who drives to school with him every day.
Alice changes her clothes in Danny's car on the way back, and this emboldens Danny that maybe she is interested in him. Danny believes that Alice is leading him on, but Danny's plan of asking her out is thwarted by his malfunctioning car. Danny's father Ernie has to come and pick them up. Ernie notices how Alice is flirting with Danny and tells him about the same after they have dropped her off. Danny says that Alice is a tease.
Camille is from a very rich family & has been Danny's friend since childhood for over 8 years. Since Danny isn't asking her out, she asks Danny out for prom. Danny visits Camille's house for dinner after he receives Camille's letter asking him out for prom.
Camille's sister Brittany is flirting with Danny, as she enters Camille's room wear her underpants. Danny turns Camille down and says that he wants to take Alice to Prom. Camille declares that she is not going to prom at all. Secretly, Danny knows that there is no chance that he and Camille would have sex on prom night, but with Alice Danny feels that he has a chance.
But then Alice turns Danny down. Alice says that Danny is like a big brother to her. Ernie (William H. Macy) is looking for love on the internet. Ernie is emotionally distant and preoccupied with his own problems, offers little guidance. Ernie brings his dates to his meetings with Danny and instead seeks Danny opinion on them, rather than trying to get involved in Danny's life.
After the incident with Camille, Danny and her relationship is strained. As the days, then the hours, dwindle down, Danny, whose parent's separation is an added distraction. Beth (Cheryl Hines) has a new beau Bob (Jon Polito). Beth is caught up in her own personal issues and struggles to provide the emotional support Danny needs. Beth is only interested in showing off Danny's skills (he plays the Trombone) to Bob.
Craig's date Abby (Kate Micucci) sets Danny up with her ultra hot friend Marcie (Angelina Assereto) who agrees to meet Danny for dinner at 7 PM sharp. Danny arrives at the restaurant at 6:15 PM and waits patiently. At 10 minutes to 7, Camille and her parents walk into the same restaurant. Danny is hijacked by Camille & her mom & Danny just has to helplessly see her leave. Danny did not have the heart to reveal to Camille that he was meeting his date at the restaurant. Danny tries to beg Abby for another date with Marcie, but the window was closed after he stood Marcie up the first time.
When Danny realizes he is running out of time (it is 3 weeks to prom), he takes matters into his own hands and attempts to secure a hotel room for the night, hoping it will impress his potential date and make the evening special. Danny realizes he is in big trouble, not least because even the titular Bart (Chad Jamian Williams), a geek so geeky he makes Danny look like Tom Cruise, already has the room thing covered. Danny approaches Beth for money to book the room and the limo, which will cost $335. Ernie is renting the tuxedo which costs $200. Beth is not happy with having to pay more than Ernie.
In an act of desperation Danny asks the Chinese origin girl in class out on a date, and they end up having dinner with his family. Ernie helps by lending Danny his car and even offers his apartment on the beach in case he wants to bring the girl back there. Ernie would be sleeping in the next room and tests the loudness of sounds that can be heard through the walls. After an awkward dinner with the family, Danny asks the girl for prom, and she agrees. But she says she cannot tell her family and since she is in a long-distance relationship, she cannot get intimate with Danny on the dance floor. She doesn't want to be seen with Danny and offers to meet at a post prom party in a room.
With 7 hours to go, Danny decides to ask Camille only to find out that his best friend's date canceled on him, so he asked Camille out before Danny. Danny confronts Camille & she says that she was tired of waiting for him.
Danny calls his dad for help. Ernie crashes a Birthday party to finds a date for Danny. Eventually Ernie ends up hiring a prostitute. Even the prostitute ditches Danny when she finds out its a prom. Dad is waiting at the hotel bar & Danny joins him. They are later joined by mom because Danny left prom tickets at home. Danny then gets mad & rushes into prom to find Camille & finds her sitting alone. She got ditched by her date.
Danny apologizes to Camille & takes her to his parents where the 4 of them end up having a fabulous night together.
