Seems these days everybody and their third cousin is having a bash at the open-world formula. First born by Rockstar back in 2001, you could argue it’s the epitome of everything we love about video games. Encouraging you to experiment with all sorts of tools at your disposal, developers can strike a balance between free-form exploration and narrative, setting up a mix of well-designed set-pieces vs. dynamic events you’ll end up spontaneously triggering yourself.
Flash-forward almost 15 years since we first stepped foot into Claude’s mute shoes and the games that bare the label now are genuine worlds to dive into and explore. Skyrim felt gargantuan for 2011, but have you felt the breadth of just one of The Witcher 3’s areas? How about Metal Gear Solid V’s twin landscapes or Mad Max’s gorgeous wasteland?

Pulp Comics!! God, I can’t believe I’m turning into that guy. The sad thing is that I am the proud owner of a trenchcoat that looks exactly like it came out of a detective novel. No, not a creepy Hot Topic black leather duster, I’m talking the real thing, as vintage as you can get without dropping a few grand. Definitely holding on to it in case trenchcoats come back in style. Or the apocalypse happens. Whichever comes first.
Also, I just noticed that, for the second time, I’m reviewing all #3 issues. I think it’s a good omen.

I Screwed Up.
Thanks to the kindly efforts of Mars Attacks: First Born author Chris Ryall, I’ve become aware that Comixology has been unintentionally misleading me. Really, if anything, I’ve been misleading myself but I refuse to take All the blame because, well, who actually does that, ever? Regardless, it turns out I’ve been sorely mistaken on the page count for several comics, including Mars Attacks: First Born, because two-page spreads are only counted as single pages in Comixology’s reader. As a result, the previous issue of Mars Attacks: First Born was actually a perfectly fine 21 pages and not a mere 20, as I said in my review. I didn’t discover this until after I’d already written this week’s review of Mars Attacks: First Born but in the interest of transparency, I left in my comments about the page count.

Wonder Woman #32
Written by Azzarello
Art by Goran Sudzuka
Cover by Cliff Chiang
Published by DC Comics
Brian Azzarello’s tale of Wonder Woman’s battle against the First Born is finally picking up pace. This is understandable considering Azzarello’s time on the title is coming to an end soon. In these final issues, time is given over to explorations of each God before the final showdown.
Azzarelo and artists Cliff Chiang and Goran Sudzuka continue their beautiful re-imaginings of characters from myth and colours used are bright and vibrant. It is difficult not to view the action in this issue as a precursor of the battle looming a few months down the line. While Azzarelo is a writer known mostly for crime stories, his work on Wonder Woman is just as well-composed and – when he does finally step away from the helm – will be difficult to follow.

The road so far …
It wasn’t exactly easy for genre television in 2005. Well, it’s really never been easy for genre television ever in the history of television, but in 2005, a deluge of genre shows premiered and almost all of them had fallen prey to the swift axe of the television gods by the next year. Start by thinking about television now. It’s a fruitful time for horror and science fiction and fantasy. There are a multitude of genre shows, running the gamut from The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, to True Blood and The Vampire Diaries. They’re all massive hits.
Now, think of all of the shows that premiered around that time in 2005. There was Surface, and that was cancelled after ten episodes by NBC. Invasion, a well-regarded show written by Shaun Cassidy (who created one of my favorite shows, American Gothic) and that was cancelled...

I think it’s high time we start putting a premium on subtitles. Not the subtitles that you see in foreign films. I’m talking about when a book or a movie or a video game has the main title and also a secondary title that is deemed necessary for dumb audiences to figure out that it’s different from the previous, identically titled thing. For example; is it really necessary for every iteration of Bluewater Productions’ ‘Vincent Price Presents’ series to have a different subtitle? Can’t they all just be called ‘Vincent Price Presents’? This week’s column title was nearly a third of the work I did getting this thing published!
Actually, you know what? I’ve changed my mind. From now on, every week, I’m going to give Comic Execution a new subtitle. Give ‘em a taste of their own medicine. And you know what...

(Cbr) Peeps might have gone from the love-it-or-hate-it candy of springtime to the stuff that dioramas are built from, but can they make the even larger leap to the big screen? Deadline reports Adam Rifkin ("Detroit Rock City") thinks the answer will be a resounding yes. The filmmaker recently snatched up the movie rights from Pennsylvania-based candy company First Born. He intends to set the "Lego Movie"-esque project at one of the aforementioned diorama contests. One particular Peep gets lost and must journey through a variety of diorama-based scenes before returning home. Rifkin, who has penned films like "Underdog" and "Mousehunt", will write the script.

There have been many stories told in the Mars Attacks universe, but nothing quite like this! Beginning in May, Chris Ryall and Sam Kieth (The Hollows) join forces once again for Mars Attacks: First Born, the story of the first Earth-born Martian.
Mars Attacks: First Born, a four-issue series from Idw Publishing written by Ryall from a story co-plotted by Ryall and Kieth, featuring art and covers by Kieth, tells a deceptively quiet story of the aftereffects of the Martian invasion:
In a devastated neighborhood, a few survivors try to rebuild their lives. One of those survivors is an infant Martian, left behind in the attacks. But was she left behind on accident or as part of a more nefarious plan? Does nature versus nurture apply to horrible invaders from Mars? These are some of the themes being explored in this series. Also: giant bugs.

Supernatural, Season 9, Episode 11: “First Born”
Written by Robbie Thompson
Directed by John Badham
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on The CW
While the split between the Winchester brothers that ended last week’s episode could have felt like a retread of past seasons, numerous other factors added potential to the idea. Not only was Castiel back and in Angelic form, but Sam’s continued recovery from the trials necessitated Castiel’s stay with him. Along with Crowley’s freedom and Kevin’s death, the group was significantly more shaken up than it was just a few short weeks ago. This week picks up on the character relationships once again, in an intriguing episode that feels like an almost new start to the season.

Supernatural Episode 911
“First Born”
Written By: Robbie Thompson
Directed By: John Badham
Original Airdate: 21 January 2014
In This Episode…
Dean is drinking alone at a bar when Crowley shows up with a proposition. He wants to team up with Dean to kill Abaddon. Crowley claims there is something called the First Blade that can kill her, which he has been hunting for decades with no luck. Rumors persist that John Winchester had some info about it, so Dean, reluctantly, checks his dad’s journal and sure enough, there is an entry. This entry leads them to John’s storage locker, where Dean finds a file that refers to the First Blade when John and another hunter named Tara were interrogating a demon. They track down Tara, who is understandably suspicious that a Winchester is working with Crowley. John thought the First Blade was just a legend, but Tara believed it to be real.

Supernatural returns tonight with a brand new episode. Here’s a look at photos and preview videos from First Born:
“The thrilling and terrifying journey of the Winchester brothers continues as Supernatural enters its ninth season. "Supernatural" Episode 9.11 - "First Born" (airs 1/21/14, 9-10pm; reruns 1/24/14, 9-10pm)
Tim Omundson (“Psych”) Guest Stars As Cain - Looking to reclaim his place as King of Hell, Crowley (Mark Sheppard) asks Dean (Jensen Ackles) for help finding “The First Blade,” the only blade that can kill Abbadon (guest star Alaina Huffman).
Knowing he owes Crowley a favor for helping Sam (Jared Padalecki) and also wanting Abaddon dead himself, Dean reluctantly agrees; and the two set off on a road trip. However, Dean and Crowley are completely unprepared when they find out who has the blade – Cain (guest star Omundson), the first son.

With all the reboots, re-do’s and New 52’s, reader accessibility has been at an all-time high. While this is great for new readers, it is rare these days to see a series maintain its status quo. With issue #170 approaching, Witchblade is one of the few books still on shelves that has successfully carried the same story since 1996 with minimal interruption. While this is great for long term fans, some new readers out there will no doubt feel left in the cold. So why is this upcoming issue so important?
Witchblade #170 is celebrating the return of Ron Marz who wrote the series from issue 80 and up and is responsible for transitioning the series from its 90s roots into the modern era. Marz’s new arc, as well as the gorgeous cover done by Marc Silvestri, is already garnering some attention due to its very Marvel-eque homages. So for those of you who are interested,...

A Two Coreys Halloween: The Essential Horror Movies of Haim and Feldman
On October 29, just two days before Halloween, St. Martin's Press will release the long-awaited Corey Feldman biography Coreyography: A Memoir. It is a must-read for any fan, as it delves deep into the trials and tribulations of this actor's young life in Hollywood. Some of it is funny, some of it is heartbreaking and a great big portion of it is truly scary.
In the book, Feldman talks in great length about his best friend Corey Haim. In the coming weeks, you'll hear a lot about what happened to the two teenagers behind closed doors, and a lot of it's not that pleasant. Instead of dwelling on that in our own review, we'd rather look at the work Haim and Corey Feldman have left behind. Specifically, in honor of the season, their horror movies. The pair met on...

This review contains spoilers.
1.1 Natural Selection & 1.2 Instinct
After achieving its first run in the States in the spring, and having already been commissioned for a second series by BBC America, Orphan Black finally gets aired for British audiences courtesy of BBC Three. Deciding to open with the first two episodes is a wise move as its first episode, albeit interesting in concept, at times lacks pace and needs longer to develop its themes so that viewers will want to come back for a second week. However, it’s worth noting that this is not an edge-of-your-seat, action-orientated science fiction show, but for me, that’s just fine and I’ll explain why.

In a controversial move, DC decided to forego publishing its regular line of books and put out 52 one-shot stories featuring some of its best villains. The one-shots range from extremely popular (Joker, Lex Luthor, Brainiac) to the newer and more obscure (Relic, Shadow Thief). They feature some veteran creators and some who have barely drawn a comic. Each “Villains Month” book will get a decimal point after a regular DC Comic. For example, Joker will feature in Batman 23.1, Riddler will feature in Batman 23.2 etc. The first issue of the new DC event Forever Evil will come out the same month as the villain one-shots. It is a direct follow up to “Trinity War” and will be written by Geoff Johns and drawn by David Finch. There are quite a few “Villains Month” books, but the following comics either have great creative teams, continue a compelling storylines, or are simply intriguing.

Rachael takes us through the wonderful cast and interwoven plots of Showtime's The Borgias, which returns this weekend in the Us...
Warning: as an introduction to the show, this feature contains mild character and plot spoilers.
This Sunday sees the return of Showtime drama The Borgias in the Us. The plot is deceptively simple: it’s the story of the Borgia family living their lives in Rome. It just so happens this family’s father is the Pope, and this is the 1490s. It's a different playing field from your average family drama.
That's just the tip of the Borgia iceberg, and here are a few more points to whet your palate while we await the Sunday night premiere.

In only three movie roles, he has already scored three blockbuster hits -- will "Paranormal Activity 4" make it ... whatever comes after a hatrick? Having quickly ascended into Hollywood A-list ranks with critics buzzing about all of his performances, this is one evil spirit audiences have fallen in love with.
NextMovie was lucky enough to score the (online) exclusive interview with The Demon from "Paranormal Activity"! We sat down with some candles and a Ouiji Board to talk to him about why he was attracted to the role, where he sees his career going from here, and what celebrity he'd most like to kill.
The first three "Paranormal Activity" were both enormous successes. Was it pretty much a no-brainer to sign on for another one?
You will die soon.
How did you become involved in this project?
I was murdered.
What was your initial reaction to reading the script?

The Taj Mahal, actress Aishwarya Rai and Alexander the Great bind famous Italian archaeologist-historian, television presenter and novelist Valerio Massimo Manfredi to India . a country whose heritage he finds iconic.Manfredi is the author of .The Last Legion., a 2007 Hollywood production starring Colin Firth, Aishwarya and Ben Kingsley..My character of the leading lady (played by Aishwarya) was totally different. She was from a village but Aishwarya was totally different. She was the lover of the protagonist.but she acted as if the film was for kids,. Manfredi told Ians here. The film tells the story of emperor Romulus Augustus. journey to Britain in search of loyal legionaires to take on the .barbarian. invaders. The writer ended up befriending Firth, could not get around to meeting Ben Kingsley and was struck by Aishwarya.s eyes..She has such strong expressive and beautiful eyes. Some little expression of love would have made the film more different.

Before I tell you about the VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul concert that will be airing tonight on VH1 at 9/8 C, I want to make something clear. I am an employee of VH1. Obviously. However, the raves you are about to read for this show, which I was lucky enough to attend last night at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, have nothing to do with my employment at this fine company. Because really, of any event I’ve ever had to go to for work, this was above and beyond anything I’ve ever experienced. I almost want to take my paycheck this week and just tear it up as a thank you. (Shame I laminate my paychecks otherwise I seriously would.) Now last time I went to Divas, I wore a full-length gown and got my hair twisted into a prom updo, because I thought that was a kind of funny,...

[1] Paramount Pictures has begun test screening Martin Scorsese's Hugo, with screenings in New York City and Chicago. Like many of you, I've been anxiously awaiting this film. Not just because its a new Scorsese film, but I'm really interested to see what a master filmmaker can do with the 3D camera. Advance buzz coming out of the first test screenings is quite positive. Read the first spoiler-free reactions, after the jump. Disclaimer: Test screenings happen for a reason. The film has not completed post production and the filmmaker/studio want to see what works and what doesn't. Films can change drastically from a test screening cut, or might not change at all. The bottom line is that you can not take the opinions from a test screening as a true review of the final feature film. But I think it gives you an indication of the possibilities. We received...

Witchblade
Volume 8: War of the Witchblades
Written By Ron Marz
Art by Stjepan Sejic
Top Cow Productions
Release Date: September 14, 2010
I have been reading Witchblade on and off for the last 2 years now. Although all of it has been in trade format, it would be hard to find at least over 130 single issues. But that would be crazy, unless you had the time, money, and resources to make it happen. But believe me, trades are the way to go for catching up on almost anything if possible. Witchblade is a unique idea that I first learned about a couple of years ago when I saw the TV show. Later on I then discovered it was based on a comic book series, and it made me want to pick it up to see what it was like. And I was not disappointed.
Witchblade Volume 8 is called “War of the Witchblades” and it means just that.

In the indie rap world, Michael "Eyedea" Larsen was seen by some as the underground Eminem. The talented Midwestern rapper and turntablist, who recorded under the name Eyedea for the Rhymesayers label, died suddenly over the weekend at his St. Paul, Minnesota, home at age 28.
His mother announced Larsen's passing — a cause of death was not given at press time — writing on the Mc's Facebook page, "It is with great pain and sadness that I tell you my son Mikey (Eyedea) has passed away ... At this time we kindly request your respect and our privacy as we process this devastating loss. We do, however, welcome your kind words, memories, and positive thoughts." The family has set up a PayPal account for donations to pay for the cost of funeral services.

There was sad news out of Minneapolis this weekend, as City Pages reported the death of Michael Larsen, better known to the underground hip-hop world as Eyedea. Larsen passed away on Sunday (October 17), though the cause of death is not yet known. He was 28 years old.
Eyedea became an underground legend in the late '90s for his freestyle ability, which earned him countless victories in rap battles (including wins at Scribble Jam '99 and Blaze Battle Chicago 2000). His skills on the microphone (as well as his budding turntable abilities) earned him a spot as a sideman for Atmosphere, and he toured with the group just as they were beginning to become big. Later, he formed a group with his friend DJ Abilities (known to his mother as Gregory Keltgen) called the Sixth Sense, which they later changed to simply Eyedea & Abilities. Their 2001 debut album First Born (released on Rhymesayers,...

Impish, irrepressible Canadian actor whose star reached its zenith with The Lost Boys
If the Artful Dodger had smartened himself up, dyed his hair, worn snazzy jackets with the sleeves rolled up, and sought an alternative career as a Jackie or My Guy cover star, he would have resembled Corey Haim at the peak of his career.
The Canadian actor, who has died unexpectedly aged 38, did not spend more than a few years in the limelight. Yet it was his chirpy, irrepressible personality, as much as the occasional high-profile film role between the mid-1980s and early 90s, that earned him the affectionate regard of mainstream audiences. Out of a meagre selection of movies, many of which went straight to video or DVD, it was the 1987 vampire romp The Lost Boys which earned him his teenybopper fanbase. The lopsided smile, impish eyes and jauntily spiked hair made him perfect pin-up fodder.

Today, Feldman released a statement on his personal blog regarding his one time acting partner and more importantly, his best friend:
"I was awakened at 8:30 this morning by my brother and sister knocking on my bedroom door. They informed me of the loss of my brother Corey Haim. My eyes weren't even open all the way when the tears started streaming down my face. I am so sorry for Corey, his mother Judy, his family, my family, all of our fans, and of course my son who I will have to find...
