Novocaine feels like a love letter to great action films. The new action-comedy is intense, as the main character is unable to feel pain and takes some brutal hits throughout the runtime. Some scenes are clear homages, like how Home Alone inspired a scene with booby traps or how the gimmick in Upgrade gave the directors inspiration for the fight scenes.
However, a classic Jason Statham thriller felt particularly similar to Novocaine, and it even seems like the team behind Novocaine tried to reference Statham's 2006 cult-classic, Crank. Jack Quaid's Novocaine character might not be a hitman like Jason Statham in Crank, but he certainly proves he has the skillset for it.
'Crank' and 'Novocaine' Share Quite a Few Similarities
Novocaine almost feels like someone tried to remake Crank two decades later. Jack Quaid's Novocaine character, Nathan Caine, might not be an assassin like Jason Statham's Crank character, Chev Chelios.

Jason Statham has fashioned himself as one of the most prominent action stars working today. Following his feature film debut in 1998 with Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Statham has worked with notable action directors such as Guy Ritchie several times. He has become the face of several franchises, including the Transporter movies, the Crank films, and as an ensemble member in The Expendables franchise. He has also acted as Deckard Shaw in the Fast and Furious franchise.
Statham's films tend to do well at the box office. As a leading actor, his films have made over $1.9 billion collectively, and he tacks on over $4 billion if one counts his work as a lead ensemble member. Several of his highest-grossing films include Fast and Furious movies along with The Meg, which made $527 million. Later this month, Statham will star in A Working Man, where he will play a construction worker who...

If you’re going to talk the talk, you better be ready to walk the walk. Or in Soulja Boy’s case, if you’re going to claim knockout power, you better not be all talk and no punches. A throwback 2017 video featuring Floyd Mayweather and Boy is making the rounds once again, bringing back memories of one of the most bizarre celebrity boxing ‘feuds’ in recent history.
This feud blew up like a cheap firecracker—loud and explosive, but ultimately not much to show for it. They weren’t just throwing verbal jabs on social media; oh no, they wanted to settle their differences in the ring. Really? Yes!

In Hollywood’s entertainment industry, there haven’t really been all that many interesting rivalries, but the ones that have been are more than enough. The currently raging one is the Soulja Boy-Marlon Wayans beef, which seems to be escalating with each passing minute.

While the recent addition was from Wayans as he brutally schooled the 34-year-old record producer cum rapper over the transphobic comment he made on Wayans’ kid, Soulja Boy aka DeAndre Cortez Way has come up with his response. This is because he recently went on an unhinged rant against Wayans.

Of all the bad blood stories between celebrities in Hollywood, this might as well be one of the most interesting ones because Soulja Boy is most certainly not holding back after Marlon Wayans‘ schooling him.

Alan Ritchson has just nabbed himself another big movie in the shape of Runner, just a few weeks before the premiere of Reacher's eagerly anticipated third season on Prime Video, as per Deadline. Ritchson is teaming up with Loki star Owen Wilson, who will hopefully say "wow" in the film. The movie features a Jason Statham-style premise as it involved a plot that sounds somewhat like Crank. The film, which is directed by Need for Speed and Expendables 4 director Scott Waugh, is set to begin shooting in Queensland, Australia, this March, while it was written by Tommy White and Miles Hubley.

"These guys took the girl I love - I won't stop 'till I get her back." Paramount has launched their 30-second Super Bowl spot for the action comedy Novocaine - arriving in theaters everywhere in March. This does look like it will be crazy fun to watch, hopefully, with some bonkers action. Meet Nathan Caine. He feels no pain. When the girl of his dreams (played by Midthunder) is kidnapped, everyman Nate turns his inability to feel pain into an unexpected strength in his fight to get her back. Jack Quaid stars as Nate Caine (a similar name to "novocaine" obviously) along with Amber Midthunder, Ray Nicholson, Betty Gabriel, Matt Walsh, Lou Beatty Jr., Van Hengst, Conrad Kemp, Jacob Batalon. Still reminds me of those Crank movies - this does look amusing enough to go watch in theaters. There better be some badass fights in here. // Continue Reading ›...

Jason Statham has starred in some of the best action movies ever made, as well as some of the worst video game flops of all time. Through these highs and lows, the actor has probably gained plenty of wisdom, but he's also experienced some regrets. While speaking to Metro back in 2012, the "Crank" star revealed that he wishes that he wasn't synonymous with doing his own stunts, as it became expected he would always perform them. As he put it:
"I did 'Transporter' with Luc Besson and I ended up doing pretty much everything. So, from that day forth, it was a slippery slope to try and change things -- until I couldn't."
While Statham is still alive and well to share his stories, there are some stunts he wishes that he didn't do due to how dangerous and potentially life-ending they were. The actor hasn't come out...

As far as modern action heroes go, one of the most enduring has certainly been Jason Statham, who’s headlined a slew of modestly budgeted action flicks that have made him one of the few genre staples left in the game. His career has been interesting, with him alternating smaller-scaled action flicks with bigger, tentpole event films, such as the Fast & Furious films and The Meg 1 & 2. Yet, the movie that established his persona wasn’t the Transporter films or any of his Guy Ritchie movies. Nope, instead, it was a small-scale but ambitious quasi-remake of the film noir classic D.O.A that put him on the map in a big way. That’s right, folks, it’s time to figure out Wtf Happened to Crank!
Jump back to 1997, when a young English director named Guy Ritchie released a little film called Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, which caused a sensation.

While the age-old adage "less is more" is sound filmmaking advice, the opposite applies to Jason Statham's relentless action movies. A case in point is Crank 2: High Voltage, a balls-to-the-wall action sequel that goes so far over the top that it dwarfs the absurdity of the original to leave a big, fat grin etched on the faces of hardcore Statham fanatics. Critics were also impressed, giving Crank 2 slightly better reviews than its predecessor.
Boasting a wild premise that forces Statham's Chev Chelios into a ticking-clock health scenario, Crank 2's high-voltage electricity derives from the extreme plot, flagrant fight scenes, hyper-violence, morbid humor, kinetic camerawork, Statham's breathless stunt work, and more. With the film recently celebrating its 15th anniversary, it's time to hook up the jumper cables and bring Crank 2: High Voltage back to life.

The Transporter is one of Jason Statham’s most iconic action movie franchises, but it remains unclear if he’ll ever play Frank Martin again in Transporter 5. The franchise debuted in 2002 with the release of The Transporter, which marked Statham’s first headlining role in a major action vehicle. The titular stoic mercenary-turned-driver quickly became the defining role of Statham’s career and opened the door to other opportunities in the genre. Not only did he go on to star in other action films like War, Crank, and The Mechanic; he reprised his role as Frank in two more Transporter movies.
The trilogy got bigger, bolder, and better with each movie. 2005’s Transporter 2 expanded the scope with even more bonkers action scenes and 2008’s Transporter 3 became the highest-grossing entry in the series. The Transporter franchise continued after that, with a fourth film and a TV spinoff, but Statham never played Frank again.

The ending of Guy Ritchie's 2021 heist thriller Wrath of Man sees Jason Statham's H finding absolution. Statham, the beloved leading man and action star known for his iconic works such as Crank (2006), Spy (2015), The Meg (2018), and the recent sleeper hit The Beekeeper, is in top form in Wrath of Man, a gripping story of revenge and greed. Wrath of Man's cast also features Josh Hartnett, Holt McCallany, and Scott Eastwood as the main antagonist Jan.
Wrath of Man was the fourth feature film collaboration between Ritchie and Statham before their fifth movie together, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, which also stars Josh Hartnett, was released in 2023. After joining the armored cash truck service Fortico at the beginning of the film, Statham's H protagonist turns out to be a former heist man himself whose son, Dougie (Eli Brown), is killed by an elite group of army veterans turned cash truck robbers.

Jason Statham has made a name for himself in the action genre over the course of his career. He got his start in music videos in the 1990s, before seeing his breakout role working with director Guy Ritchie in Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Every box office bomb of 2024 must be looking at Jason Statham and wondering what they have to do to steal some of his secret sauce. As well as his new hit The Beekeeper at the beginning of 2024, one of his older movies just refuses to lay down and die on Tubi. That movie is Mechanic: Resurrection, the panned 2016 action thriller sequel to 2011’s The Mechanic, which has refused to stay out of the free streamer’s list of most-watched movies.
In Mechanic: Resurrection, Statham reprises his role as Arthur Bishop, a master assassin coerced out of retirement to carry out more increasingly impossible hits. The movie delivers a masterclass from the Statham Bible, with intense and over-the-top action sequences, joined by a generally simple plot, and a big helping of the charismatic charm of the dome-headed tough guy. Action movie legend Jason Statham's 2008 sci-fi thriller impresses on its new streaming debut, just four days after switching platforms. Statham shot to fame when he was cast in the role of Bacon in Guy Ritchie's directorial debut, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and paired with him again for a leading role in Snatch. The critical and commercial success of the movies led to him starring in The Transporter trilogy and movies like Crank, The Italian Job remake, Hummingbird, and Safe, further cementing him as one of Hollywood's leading action stars.
Statham has continued to carve out a niche in the action-thriller genre, with a few showings against type, such as a supporting role in the romantic drama London, and a memorable co-starring turn in the action-comedy Spy. The former NBC sitcom A.P. Bio has a robust cast full of hilarious main and supporting characters. Mike O'Brien of Saturday Night Live acclaim created the original sitcom, which first premiered on February 1, 2018. The show is centered around professor turned high-school teacher Jack Griffin, who is played by Glenn Howerton of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. A.P. Bio follows Jack as he transitions from being a philosophy professor at Harvard University to an A.P. Biology teacher at his hometown high school after falling from grace due to a YouTube video.
A.P. Bio ran for two seasons on NBC before moving to Peacock for its final two seasons. The series was canceled twice even though it maintained an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 88%, with its second and third seasons earning perfect 100% critic scores. Despite the positive reviews of A.P. Bio, there was not enough consistent viewership for the series to continue past four seasons.

The cast of The Meg was a big reason for the shark movie's box office success when it was released back in 2018. A loose adaptation of the book, Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten, the film follows a group of scientists who encounter a 75-foot-long Megalodon shark while on a rescue mission to save a trapped research station called the Mana. Posing a threat to both the scientists and the people on land, Jason Statham's Jonas Taylor and his team must face off against this gigantic beast in a confrontation that is equally silly and entertaining.
At the time, The Meg was the most expensive shark movie ever made (via THR). While the film received mixed reviews, that investment paid off as it earned $529 million at the box office (via Box Office Mojo), a large part of that coming China, where the film is most popular.

An underrated Jason Statham movie is being added to Max next month. Death Race, a remake of the 1975 film Death Race 2000, is set to debut on the streamer at the beginning of December.
Max subscribers won't need to wait long to stream Death Race as the Statham-led action thriller will be added to the streamer on Dec. 1. "Framed for a murder he did not commit, three-time speedway champ Jensen Ames (Statham) finds himself at Terminal Island, the country's toughest prison, but he gets an unexpected chance at freedom when the warden offers a choice: Compete in the Death Race as a mythical driver called 'Frankenstein,' or rot in a cell forever," reads the movie's synopsis. "Riding in a car equipped with flamethrowers and grenade launchers, Ames must survive a gauntlet of vicious criminals to win his freedom -- or die trying."

When it comes to the box office, the action genre can be fickle (unless you are Tom Cruise) with big names not always bringing the guaranteed payday. It happens to the best and beefiest of the genre, but when two fan favorites come together, success is almost expected. Both Jet Li and Jason Statham have amassed impressive careers, kicking a** and taking names for decades, with the 2000s being particularly kind to both actors.
2007's War should have been a success, but it did not manage to win over critics and underperformed at the box office. Almost two decades after its release, we will look back and see why the action flick fell so flat and whether it is worth revisiting with fresh eyes.

Quick Links Jason Statham Had Six Consecutive Flops Before The Expendables 2 How The Expendables 2 Restored His Winning Streak
When it comes to action films, stars like Keanu Reeves or Tom Cruise may come to mind first, but Jason Statham is arguably as well-known in the genre. Beginning with the Transporter trilogy, the actor has been renowned for his effortlessly cool-looking martial arts and has been in numerous other successful action franchises, including The Expendables, Crank, Fast & Furious, and The Mechanic.
Having said that, most people are unaware that, despite his unrivaled success in the Transporter films, Statham experienced a long, exhausting descent in his career during the early 2010s, when six of his movies flopped in succession. Nonetheless, he rose from the ashes to reestablish himself as the action king, eventually appearing in some of the most entertaining films, including Spy, Fast & Furious, and The Beekeeper. Ever since his debut in Guy Ritchie's seminal Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels in 1998, big screen badass Jason Statham has been a fixture in action films. He's headlined thrilling classics like the Transporter, Crank, and Mechanic franchises, as well as flexed his acting chops (in addition to his muscles) in other genres: comedy (The Pink Panther), fantasy (In the Name of the King: Dungeon Siege), and drama (The Bank Job). And, currently, viewers can find a Statham gem on almost every streaming platform.

In the 21st-century era of film, Jason Statham's name has become ubiquitous with the action genre. His first franchise film came only four years into his feature film career, when he played protagonist Frank Martin in the 2002 film The Transporter. This kickstarted the action sequels Transporter 2 in 2005 and Transporter 3 in 2008. He continued his franchise streak with Crank in 2006. Now, Statham is known for many other action franchises, including the Expendables movies.
As much as the actor's filmography displays his strength within the action genre, however, it also shows that not all action franchises are created equally. The Rotten Tomatoes scores for Statham's movies have trended downward in recent years. 2023 particularly displayed this, as Expend4bles, Meg 2: The Trench, and Fast X all wound up with rotten Tomatometers, and were considered some of the weaker entries in their respective franchises. While gritty, realistic action has its place, there's nothing quite like an absurd action thriller that pushes beyond the boundaries of reason. The 2000s delivered plenty of silly action movies that married humor with excitement. Action has the ability to reduce anyone to awe and glee when it's done right. People can get swept away in the all-out fun of action movies in a way that doesn't necessarily happen for all other genres.
Some of the most entertaining action movies of the 2000s kept things light by poking fun at the absurd excesses of the genre. This trend produced a string of action comedies which remain both hilarious and thrilling all these years later. Even if movies weren't overtly gesturing toward the history of the genre, they were often parodying the tropes of action and pushing to see where the boundaries lie.

For more than two decades, the effortlessly cool and charming Jason Statham has dazzled moviegoers all across the world with his dominating on-screen presence and jaw-dropping physical prowess. Known for portraying tough-as-nails characters who kick butt and take names, the Hollywood leading man is one of the entertainment industry's most bankable stars and has appeared in a slew of silver screen hits like The Transporter, Spy, The Expendables, and Hobbs & Shaw.
Back in 2006, Statham was still making a name for himself and showing audiences his dazzling skill set when he headlined the action flick Crank, a pedal-to-the-metal thrill ride that follows hitman Chev Chelios as he is forced to run around Los Angeles and perform adrenaline-pumping stunts after being injected with a lethal poisoning. The movie would help further elevate Statham's status as an actor, though he almost didn't end up playing the memorable character; let's look at how different Crank could have been.

The Prime Video satirical superhero series "The Boys" is a lot of things — it's disturbing, hilarious, and tackles comic book culture with a deeply jaded viewpoint. One would think that with such a unique combination of factors, there just couldn't be anything else on TV like it. Thankfully, you'd be very, very wrong. There has been a boom in subversive superhero and comic book fare in the past decade or so, and there are some truly great shows that can tide fans of "The Boys" over until the fifth and final season premieres in the next year or two.
Each of these shows has something in common with "The Boys," from comic book origins to truly twisted humor to extreme violence, and they're all fantastic in their own right. It’s important for movies to ask serious questions. Brian Netto and Adam Schindler’s new Netflix thriller “Don’t Move” asks a very, very big one: What if a scene that would only be a couple minutes long in any other movie was the whole damn movie?
“Don’t Move” makes a decent attempt to address themes of mortality and depression but more than anything it’s a formal filmmaking exercise. In a nutshell, the film stars Kelsey Asbille (“Yellowstone”) as Iris, a mother mourning the accidental death of her son. At the start of the film she nearly takes her own life on a hiking trail. She’s interrupted by Richard, played by Finn Wittrock (“Origin”), who snaps her out of it and helps her remember that “Broken doesn’t have to mean hopeless.”
Then, right when Iris has finally rediscovered her will to live, Richard tases her, ties her up,...

The Beekeeper is an adrenaline-fueled action thriller starring Jason Statham, the man, myth, and legend behind some of the most iconic action film franchises, such as Transporter and Crank. Despite being at the top of his game for two decades, Statham shows no signs of slowing down, as seen in his most recent film, The Beekeeper.
The film was both a box-office hit and a critical success, grossing $152.7 million on a $40 million budget and earning an impressive 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Overall, fans got exactly what they hoped for in this Jason Statham film, which combined high-octane action with a relentless vengeance plot. However, what sets this movie apart is the mysterious past of Statham's character, Adam Clay, a former agent of a clandestine organization known as The Beekeepers. If it wasnt for Keanu Reeves constantly getting the name wrong, John Wick wouldve been released under a very different title and it probably wouldnt have become a franchise. When it was first released in 2014, John Wick initially didnt seem to be anything more than a run-of-the-mill low-budget revenge thriller. It looked like the kind of movie that had become a dime a dozen since Taken came out: a beloved movie star plays a seasoned professional killer who seeks vengeance for the death of a loved one and kills hundreds of people along the way.
But against all odds, John Wick became one of the biggest blockbuster franchises of the 21st century. Jason Statham is a great action movie star, but his deadpan debut performance in Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels proves hes even better at delivering pitch-black comedy. Statham is one of the few movie stars left who can turn a movie into a blockbuster based on their involvement alone. Statham is the only reason The Beekeeper was a box office hit. Even when it comes to his own franchises, like Crank, The Meg, and The Expendables, its Stathams star power that draws in the crowds, not the I.P.
Statham is always awesome in his action movies. No one other than Statham could fight a megalodon in hand-to-hand combat with a straight face and really sell it. Spy proves one glaring truth about the career of Jason Statham. Statham is an action movie icon whose movies have earned more than $8.4 billion collectively, with some of the highest-grossing being The Fate of the Furious ($1.24 billion), The Meg ($529.3 million), and The Expendables 2 ($274.5 million). Statham has proved to be a box office draw both as a lead in franchises such as The Mechanic, The Transporter, and Crank and as a supporting character, particularly Deckard Shaw in the Fast Saga, who held a title role in the 2019 spinoff Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.

It takes a lot of range to go from playing the quietly awkward Pedro in Napoleon Dynamite to getting ripped and donning drag to join Jason Statham in the loud, in-your-face film, Crank (more on that below). That's Efren Ramirez for you, an underrated and dynamic actor who swings wildly from genre to genre. MovieWeb spoke with him about the new film Seven Cemeteries, which also runs the gamut in terms of genre and style. It's a comedic Western horror film that sees him as a snarky undead companion to the one and only Danny Trejo, who plays Bruno, a hardcore but quirky antihero seeking a ragtag team to help him protect a woman's prized ranch from villainous drug lords. Again, it's a far cry from his iconic role in Napoleon Dynamite, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

Jason Statham's high-octane, adrenaline-filled thrill ride Crank: High Voltage has found a second life on Starz. Surprisingly, the movie is third in the streaming platform's most-watched movies, captivating viewers with its madcap premise and utterly relentless action. Crank: High Voltage is the sequel to Crank from 2006, which introduced Statham as Chev Chelios, a hitman who is poisoned with a lethal drug that will stop his heart if his adrenaline levels drop. Think of it like Speed, but with a heart instead of a bus. To stay alive, Chev runs around Los Angeles trying to keep his adrenaline pumping by driving fast, getting into fights, and even engaging in some public carnal activity, all while trying to find the antidote and exact revenge on those responsible for his impending death.

While “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” is a relatively low-budget reboot, it remains hard to parse its $20 million price tag. It has the look of YouTube fan film — not to mention the excess fidelity, aping the story beats of Mike Mignola’s eponymous comic to a tee. Mignola’s screenwriting credit is therefore unsurprising, but that director Brian Taylor was at all involved is an astonishing tidbit. One half of the duo behind high-octane films like “Crank” and “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance”, Taylor has made several movies that get by on momentum and gusto. “The Crooked Man,” however, features neither.
Following Ron Perlman and David Harbor — two actors exceptionally suited for the role of Hellboy — actor Jack Kesy plays a more passive incarnation of the paranormal agent. If he quips, he does so subtly, and if he recalls secrets from his past, they don’t affect him very much in the present.

Plot: Hellboy and a rookie B.P.R.D. agent in the 1950s are sent to the Appalachians, where they discover a remote community dominated by witches and led by the sinister local demon, the Crooked Man.
Review: The Hellboy series has struggled ever since its inception. It was never financial dynamite for the studio, despite its clear fanbase. So now filmmakers are taking a different approach. Hellboy: The Crooked Man is much more in line with the graphic novels from Mike Mignola than anything we’ve seen before. He’s more of a paranormal detective with the scope being much more street-level. There are still fantastical creatures to fight, but it’s more location shooting and less crazy action set pieces. This is certainly not the Guillermo Del Toro movies, which went for a more large-scale, fantastical world. And it really worked for me!

The action franchise that should have been Jason Statham's best only proved how much the movies wasted his talents. Jason Statham's action movies have been entertaining fans for over 20 years, and he had an unusual route to stardom. After years of odd jobs like working in market stalls or being a music video extra, Statham made his debut in Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Statham's action debut in John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars would then later set him on a different path entiriely.
He might be typecast in the genre, but Statham doesn't appear to mind that one bit. Is the third time the charm? The latest Hellboy reboot, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, is all set to debut in the United Kingdom tomorrow (it has already debuted in some other international markets) and the first reviews have now begun to trickle through. So, was this years Hellboy effort worth another reboot? Lets find out.
Dan Jolin of Empire sadly did not think so, awarding the comic book outing a lackluster 2/5 and likening the movie to a lost pilot for a 90s monster-of-the-week TV show that never made it to air. Though they did praise The Crooked Man for achieving what it does with lesser budget.
Valiant though this low-budget attempt to reclaim Hellboy may be, it sadly lacks the storytelling and stylistic savvy to rise above its all-too-obvious budgetary limitations.
