Kurt Russell refuses to accept that Bone Tomahawk is a typical "Horror Western," and, yet, he has compared it with his own classic 85% Rt horror flick. Bone Tomahawk holds a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 91%, suggesting that critics have almost unanimously praised the film for the chills and thrills it instills in viewers. The film's audience score of 74% highlights that even though most viewers gave it a high rating, not many found it good enough. However, since most of its reviews have been positive, it would be fair to say it is a universally loved Western movie.
Another universal opinion about the film is that it deserves to be classified as a "Horror Western." The reason being that it seamlessly blends traditional elements of Western cinema with the heart-pounding terrors of battling the unknown. James Wan's upcoming horror movie project is exciting, but I am even more hyped for the next installment of an acclaimed Lovecraftian shared universe. Although most details remain unknown, James Wan is reportedly working on an adaptation of Hp Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu. Even though directly adapting Lovecraftian tales to the big screen is no easy feat, James Wan's long line of success with horror movies makes me believe he might deliver something exceptional.
Although the film is still in the early stages of development, James Wan has teased that it is more of a passion project, and he already expects it to be a hard sell. Given how well-made cosmic horror movies like Alex Garland's Annihilation and John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness are hard to sell and rarely perform well at the box office, I am glad James Wan is focusing less on...

James Wan has been at the helm of several horror films, and he might have his take on a popular horror remake. Wan is currently in talks to helm a remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon.
James Wan is a very complex director with a preference for horror. He has created, co-created, and directed many popular horror franchises, including Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring, but he's also had his shot at 2015's Furious 7 and the two Aquaman films. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Wan is currently in talks to have a new take on the classic Universal monster.

The Bird Box monsters remain unseen throughout the franchise, adding to their scary and mysterious nature. The creatures may be manifestations of the Earth itself, fighting back to save the planet. The monsters have the ability to tailor fear to each victim and can tap into their memories.
One thing that really makes the Bird Box monster so scary is that the movie franchise never shows it. H.P. Lovecrafts short story The Call of Cthulhu contains the phrase, The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents." It is one of the many reasons the creative team behind the movies decided to leave the Bird Box monsters up to viewers' imaginations. James Wan faces challenges in adapting Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu due to its complex cosmic horrors and limited commercial potential. Lovecraft's stories, including Cthulhu, have not been fully realized on screen due to their unimaginable cosmic entities and non-traditional storytelling. Wan's blockbuster success with Aquaman and trendsetting in horror may give his Lovecraft adaptation a better chance than Del Toro's failed attempt.
Horror legend James Wan would need to use all of his considerable clout to ensure that his ambitious H.P. Lovecraft adaptation The Call of Cthulhu ever made it to cinema screens, but even this might not be enough to make the project happen. Although his racism tarnished his literary reputation, the author H.P. Lovecraft remains one of horror literatures most important figures. James Wan's next horror movie will not follow traditional horror tropes, and, instead, will adopt a 2018 sci-fi movie's formula. Wan, known for diverse films like Aquaman and Fast & Furious, is returning to his horror roots in a unique way. Like Alex Garland's Annihilation, Wan's Lovecraft adaptation may face challenges, but he is prioritizing his artistic integrity.
Instead of taking the conventional route, James Wan's next horror movie is brilliantly treading the same path as a 2018 sci-fi film. Rarely do movies make me speechless, and I have watched a lot of movies. Some of them have been the greatest things that my eyes have seen, while others have made me feel like I might require an eye-bleach. The last time a movie made me question my decisions was when I watched Sandeep Vanga’s Animal. “Never Again!” I thought to myself, but a week or so later, I’ve had to watch Gods of the Deep. Recently, a friend of mine told me to keep an open mind while indulging in this passion, especially with films I do not think highly of. So, I admitted my bias and proceeded to watch this horror flick. Understandably, the horror genre isn’t really known for its dexterity, but this one is just hilarious. I would prefer to think this was the intention, but I am not entirely sure it is.

Cosmic horror has been established as one of the most chilling sub-genres in horror cinema. With a focus on the unknown, isolation, and the human mind, cosmic horror plays on the imaginations of audiences rather than going all out on gore and jump scares. Instead of ghosts, serial killers, or vampires, these stories focus on the endless possibilities of the universe's fictional horrors.
Early 20th-century author H.P. Lovecraft gave Cosmic horror prominence through stories like At the Mountain of Madness, The Hound, and The Call of Cthulhu. The genre can be challenging to pull off in cinema, but plenty of films have tried to capture the terror of the unknown and unimaginable. Everything from stories of paranoia to questions about reality itself has made up cosmic horror in cinema.

James Wan's adaptation of The Call of Cthulhu could spark a new trend in horror movies based on Lovecraft's work. The success of Wan's film could lead to future Lovecraft adaptations and the development of a franchise. Guillermo del Toro's long-awaited adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness still needs to happen, given his track record and mastery of the horror genre.

Lovecraftian horror has become a separate subgenre due to the enduring popularity of Hp Lovecraft's work and its influence on pop culture. Direct adaptations of Lovecraft's stories have struggled to accurately portray his complex descriptions of the unknown in live-action. Successful Lovecraftian films focus on thematic aspects rather than recreating visual elements, emphasizing the consequences of forbidden knowledge and the powerlessness of humans in the face of cosmic forces. James Wan's adaptation of The Call of Cthulhu should follow this approach.
While it is great news that James Wan is adapting an Hp Lovecraft story, the film already seems to be facing a major cosmic horror challenge. Hp Lovecraft's literary corpus, which revolves around themes of cosmicism and the fragility of human supremacy, hardly gained attention or acclaim when he was alive. However, nearly a century after his demise, Lovecraftian horror has become so deeply ingrained in pop culture...

James Wan pivots from the supernatural horror of The Conjuring Universe to direct a movie adaptation of The Call of Cthulhu, the definitive cosmic horror story from H.P. Lovecraft.

Among James Wan’s post-Aquaman projects is an adaptation of Hp Lovecraft’s The Call Of Cthulhu – and it’ll also be a videogame, a report suggests.

But it seems Wan isn’t finished with the salty depths – among the director’s various upcoming projects is an adaptation of Hp Lovecraft’s cosmic horror story, The Call Of Cthulhu.
Deadline, which mentions this in a broader report about videogame adaptations, describes it as a ‘dream project’ for Wan, and one the filmmaker’s “been quietly working on for five years”.

While the monster's origins in the movie are not explicitly explained, it is hinted that the drilling crew's actions awakened the Deep Ones, leading to the emergence of Cthulhu and other ancient monsters from the ocean depths.
The Underwater movie monster turned Norah's deep-sea mission on the Kepler 822 into a thalassophobia-fueled nightmare that would make H.P. Lovecraft proud, but the film itself doesn't implicitly spell out what the creature is. William Eubank's claustrophobic 2020 horror movie Underwater was set 11,000 meters under the sea in the murky depths of the Mariana Trench. It follows the crew of a...

Godzilla has fought numerous foes over the years, including a giant octopus, but the franchise became more about watching giant monsters punch each other. There have been many canceled Godzilla movies and proposed crossovers with other Toho beasts or characters from other studios, such as Godzilla vs. Cthulhu and a Pacific Rim/Godzilla crossover. Some of the most exciting Godzilla battles that never came to pass include Ghost Godzilla, Chamelegon, Gaira the Gargantua, and Mechani-Kong fighting Godzilla.
Godzilla has fought numerous foes over the years, and even more have been planned without ever coming to fruition. The beloved kaiju first appeared in 1954's Godzilla, a thoughtful and powerful monster-movie rumination on the horrors of the nuclear bomb. While the film did feature a scene where Godzilla fights a giant octopus, it was much more focused on the love triangle between its three central human characters and the ethics of developing super-weapons.

The main characters of The Simpsons are reimagined as disturbing and yet strangely fascinating Lovecraftian horror monsters in new AI-generated art. First airing on Fox back in 1993, The Simpsons just recently concluded season 34, with season 35 on the way later this year. The show's central characters have largely remained constant throughout the last 30 years, with Homer, Marge, Lisa, Bart, Maggie, and a host of wacky supporting characters showing up in each episode.
Now, a new batch of AI-generated images shared by Fahad Hoda on Facebook imagine what the main The Simpsons characters would look like if they were animated creations from the mind of author H.P. Lovecraft. Check out all 17 images below:

While all of the characters look terrifying in their own way, Bart, Maggie, and Krusty the Clown, in particular, are truly disturbing creations.

Ahead of Insidious: The Red Door releasing in theaters next month, James Wan and Patrick Wilson took part in an Ask-Me-Anything session over on Reddit last week. During the chat, Wan and Wilson answered various questions from fans about the Insidious franchise and beyond, but one answer from Wan in particular really caught our attention.
When asked if he has any dream project that he hopes to someday bring to life, James Wan brought up The Call of Cthulhu, an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s classic short story.
Of particular note, it sounds like Wan has already been low-key toying with a potential adaptation of Lovecraft’s tale, which was first published in Weird Tales in February 1928.
Wan teases during the Reddit Ama chat, “My dream project, that I have been secretly cooking away on the down low for the last 5 years, is The Call of Cthulhu.”

Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos is the most well-known example of Lovecraftian horror, also known as cosmic horror. The mythos is a collection of entities, tomes, and people who share the universe and its horrors that human beings can't comprehend. Told mainly secondhand by different characters, these stories contain horrors that are terrifying in what they suggest as opposed to what is actually known. "The Call of Cthulhu" is the best example of this, as it contains many of these aspects.
Outside the works of H. P. Lovecraft himself, the Lovecraftian horror genre is going through something of a renaissance in cinema in the 2020s. Though films like Halloween and The Conjuring franchise are at the pinnacle of horror, Lovecraftian films are carving out their own niche with films like From Beyond and The Color Out of Space. With both the technology and artistry available in filmmaking today, Lovecraftian tales are becoming more mainstream in media.

While it enjoyed its debut this past Friday in select theaters, Sacrifice from filmmakers Andy Collier and Toor Man is set to arrive on digital platforms today for genre fans to enjoy from the comfort of their own homes. Loosely based on a short story by Paul Kane, Sacrifice stars Barbara Crampton, Sophie Stevens, and Ludovic Hughes and is centered around a young couple who arrive in an isolated Norwegian village to claim an inheritance, but get more than they bargained for when they realize the villagers are part of a cult that worship a sea-dwelling entity.
During the recent press day for Sacrifice, Daily Dead had the pleasure of speaking with both Mian and Collier about their latest collaboration, and they discussed what they initially saw in Kane’s story that felt ripe for adaptation, their thoughts on collaborating with Stevens for Sacrifice, and more.

HBO’s long-awaited drama series “Lovecraft Country” finally hits the network this August, and a first trailer for the series has been unveiled by the network today. Based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, “Lovecraft Country” looks to offer plenty of southern gothic thrills and chills of the kind originated by the eponymous author of such stories as “The Call of Cthulhu” and “The Colour Out of Space.” The original dark fantasy novel explored the connection between the horror fiction of H.P. Lovecraft, and racism in the United States circa the Jim Crow era. Here’s the official synopsis from HBO:
“The series follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This...

The climax of Underwater features the appearance of a creature that looks all too familiar to readers of a certain author of horror fiction, and the movie’s director has now confirmed that it’s exactly what audiences thought it was.
Although Underwater was initially dismissed as “Alien in the sea,” it turned out to be an inventive and legitimately unsettling take on a disaster movie that proved the comparison to be a positive one. The intensity is kicked into high gear less than ten minutes into the story, and from there barely relents as the handful of survivors perilously navigate their way to safety.
Along the way they’re hounded by sub-aquatic monsters that are scary enough on their own, but at the climax it’s revealed that the heroes had merely been dealing with the spawn of an undersea leviathan. Its maw of flailing octopus-like tentacles and giant...

Following their exit from the “Star Wars” universe, “Game of Thrones” co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have found their replacement pic, signing on to produce an untitled thriller based on the graphic novel “Lovecraft” for Warner Bros.
It is unknown if they will also direct the project, but they’ve already set Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi to pen the script with “The Invitation” and “Destroyer” director Karyn Kusama exec producing.
The “Lovecraft” graphic novel chronicles the life of H.P. Lovecraft, whose books included “The Call of Cthulhu,” “The Rats in the Walls,” “At the Mountains of Madness,” “The Shadow over Innsmouth” and “The Shadow Out of Time” and spawned the idea of Lovecraftian horror. While plot details for the movie adaptation are currently unknown, sources say Benioff and Weiss’ take will tackle the idea of Lovecraft’s otherworldly creatures being real.

As you may have been able to figure out by this point in time, I'm kind of into screenplays. Recently I had the joy of reading Todd Phillips and Scott Silver's script for the much-ballyhooed Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and Get Out writer-director Jordan Peele's newest nightmare Us. And today I will be reading the script for The Witch director Robert Eggers' nautical nightmare The Lighthouse starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson.
Truth be told, I haven't yet had the chance to sit down and read this script for myself just yet, but you can bet that I will be getting to it as soon as I get off shift today! However, you can go ahead and read Robert and Max Eggers' screenplay for The Lighthouse right now if you please, right here.

I’ve got a great video essay for you to watch today for all of you H.P. Lovecraft fans. It comes from Ted Ed and it’s called “Titan of Terror: The Dark Imagination of H.P. Lovecraft.”
The video dives into the legendary horror stories of Lovecraft, whose fantastical tales, such as The Call of Cthulhu and At the Mountains of Madness, created a new era of Gothic horror.
Arcane books of forbidden lore, disturbing secrets in the family bloodline, and terrors so unspeakable the very thought of them might drive you mad. These have become standard elements in modern horror stories. But they were largely popularized by a single author: H.P. Lovecraft, whose name has become synonymous with the terror he inspired. Silvia Moreno-García dissects the “Lovecraftian” legacy.
Watch the video below and let us know what your favorite Lovecraft horror story is.

A new Skyrim mod plunges The Elder Scrolls into the realm of Cthulhu and Lovecraftian horror.
If you want to get back into Skyrim but remain disappointed by the game only offering teases of old-fashioned Lovecraftian horror, there's a new mod out there that might just make your Cthulhu dreams a reality with The Elder Scrolls.

The premise here is that there's a cult in Tamriel that seems to be tied to the appearance of some horrifying new monsters and a series of troubling rumors. H.P. Lovecraft’s influence can be felt in countless writers, musicians and artists who’ve followed in the “weird fiction” exemplar’s footsteps, but the author’s work has rarely been directly adapted. The first two images from Call of Cthulhu, the official video game adaptation of Chaosium’s pen & paper RPG of the same name, have been unveiled this week. The images feature Darkwater Island,a disturbing place that players will have to explore during their investigation while Cthulhu, the Great Dreamer, prepares its awakening.
In Call of Cthulhu, players will control Edward Pierce, a former veteran and private investigator in 1920s Boston. Pierce will be investigating the tragic and mysterious death of Sarah Hawkins and her family in Darkwater Island. Today’s images give you a first glimpse of the locations players will have to visit: from the sinister docks, to the manor of the deceased family, Call of Cthulhu offers a dark and oppressive ambiance that shall pay tribute to Lovecraft’s work and universe. Indeed, this banal investigation might lead you to more sinister forces and darker secrets buried deep within Darkwater Island.

The fine folks at Narragansett Beer continued to hear “The Call of Cthulhu” last month with their release of the I Am Providence Imperial Red Ale, the fourth H.P. Lovecraft-inspired beer from the brewing company.
The I Am Providence Imperial Red Ale is based on Lovecraft’s enduring quote about the love he had for the Rhode Island capital. The Cthulhu-centric design for the red ale was fittingly created by Gunsho, a Providence artist with a unique style.
As with the previous releases in their Lovecraft Series, this beer is available on the East Coast in six-packs of 16-ounce tallboys for about $12.99 per pack.
Below, we have official details and photos of the beer, and to learn more, visit:
