Jodie Foster is undoubtedly one of the biggest female stars in Hollywood. The actress made a name for herself by playing the young prostitute Iris Steensma in Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, after having appeared in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore two years prior. But, while her filmography includes some important titles like The Accused (1988), Sommersby (1993), Maverick (1994), Contact (1997), Anna and the King (1999), Panic Room (2002), Flightplan (2005), Inside Man (2006), The Brave One (2007), Nim’s Island (2008), Carnage (2011), Elysium (2013), The Mauritanian (2021), and Nyad (2023), her best-known role is that of Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs, which also brought her her second Oscar. Recently, she also appeared in True Detective: Night Country.
But, while she has definitely gathered a large number of major roles, she has also – as you might have assumed – rejected and lost several other major roles, and from what we know now, one of these roles was a major Star Wars role.

Jodie Foster is fast becoming a sure thing for a Best Supporting Actress nomination at this year’s Oscars and her status as Golden Globe favorite for “Nyad” only boosts that theory.
Foster c0-stars in this Netflix biopic which charts Diana Nyad’s attempts to swim across the 110-mile open ocean from Cuba to Florida. Annette Bening takes on the titular role while Foster features as Nyad’s coach and friend, Bonnie Stoll. Foster arguably has the meatier role out of the two as the entire climax of the film features Bening’s Nyad swimming, largely without dialogue. That leaves Foster’s Stoll as the narrative anchor and the actress delivers a supporting turn that feels like a co-lead (this is something Oscar voters love in this category but we’ll get back to that later). Critics love Foster’s performance, too.

From forgotten '90s hits like The Game to modern gems like Widows and Burning, there are some exceptional storylines that are impressive additions to the thriller category. These movies deserve more hype for crossing genre lines, creating compelling plotlines, and throwing in some shocking twists.

In the early part of the 2000s, Terrence Howard was on the cusp of major stardom. He’d been around since the mid-nineties, stealing scenes in movies like Dead Presidents, Mr. Holland’s Opus and The Best Man (which spawned a legit franchise). But, it was his role in Paul Haggis’ Oscar-winner Crash that led to many saying he would be the next great actor of his generation. His role in the Sundance break-out Hustle & Flow was a sensation that nabbed him a (well-deserved) Oscar nomination, and he followed it up with excellent character work in Four Brothers, The Brave One, Get Rich or Die Tryin’, and more. But, his role as James Rhodes in Iron Man promised big things to come.
At the time, no one knew the film would kick off the MCU, and he was well-positioned, with his character slated to become War Machine in the sequel.

Neil Jordan's new detective movie "Marlowe," starring Liam Neeson, is the director's first since "Greta" in 2018. Jordan may be one of the moodiest filmmakers working, and the smoky mysteries of film noir seem especially suited to his skills. "Marlowe" does indeed feature the famous P.I. created by Raymond Chandler in his 1939 novel "The Big Sleep," but it is not based on any of Chandler's works. Instead, the screenplay, by William Monahan ("The Departed") is based on a spinoff Marlowe novel called "The Black-Eyed Blonde" by John Banville. True to the genre, "Marlowe" is about the eponymous detective's search for the ex-lover of a rich heiress (Diane Kruger). A notable piece of trivia: "Marlowe" constitutes Neeson's 100th official screen credit.
As of this writing, "Marlowe" is not enjoying the best reviews (it currently has a 23 approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes), but fans of film noir would do well to...

Can you imagine anything more delightful than Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin co-starring in a movie with Richard Roundtree and Malcolm McDowell … in 1972? That was the year Fonda won an Oscar for “Klute” and daffy “Laugh-In” star Tomlin released her first comedy album. The two men were riding high with “Shaft” and “A Clockwork Orange,” respectively. Just think what an ensemble film that played to each of their strengths might have yielded 50 years ago.
That’s wishful thinking, of course. You can’t go back, and you can’t do things over, but it’s never too late to move on. At least, that’s the message writer-director Paul Weitz is peddling in “Moving On,” a sassy feature-length sitcom with a #MeToo twist in which two estranged friends reunite to settle a decades-old score.

Warner Bros. Discovery has had a rough go of it recently. The newly-formed mega corporation’s decision to callously prune HBO Max’s servers of hours of content has led to mountains of bad PR and billions of dollars in market cap losses. Suffice it to say, a jam-packed list of new HBO Max releases for September 2022 would provide some welcome relief for the “House of the House of the Dragon.”
Unfortunately, HBO Max’s new releases this month are uncommonly light. It’s impossible to say whether this is the result of more Wbd meddling or simply some bad scheduling luck but either way it’s not going to make any executives’ seats less warm. There are only a handful of notable originals this month, led by season 2 of the Spanish language comedy Los Espookys on Sept. 16. That is joined by a pair of documentaries, Escape from Kabul on Sept.

Post-slap, Will Smith has been banned from attending the Oscars ceremony along with other Academy events for 10 years. The Academy’s Board of Governors met April 8, to finalize their response to Smith’s physical attack on presenter Chris Rock on stage during the March 25 awards show.
Smith previously tendered his resignation from the Academy. Speculation swirled that his Best Actor Oscar could be rescinded or he might be declared ineligible for future nomination, but here’s why both of those outcomes were unlikely.
The sole precedent for overturning a win came in 1969, when feature documentary “The Young Americans” was found to be ineligible due to its release date. In that case, runner-up “Journey Into Self” received the statuette and the original one was returned.

This year's Cannes Film Festival will honor Jodie Foster with a lifetime achievement Palme d'Or, it was revealed yesterday. The two-time Oscar winning actress will accept the award on the 6th of July at the 74th Cannes Film Festival, and follows in the footsteps of other filmmakers such as Jane Fonda, Bernado Bertolucci and Jeanne Moreau who have all previously been recipients of the prize. As one of the best known actresses and directors of the last four decades, it is nothing short of the recognition Foster's career deserves.
In a statement making the announcement, the festival organisers said that the award symbolised her, "brilliant artistic journey" and said that she has been, "a unique personality with a modest yet strong commitment to some of the major issues of our time." In her own statement, Foster said, "Cannes is a festival to which I owe so much, it has completely changed my life.

Since she began acting at the age of 6, Jodie Foster has served as a role model for child actors by demonstrating how to effectively transition to a lasting adult career. Now 58, she is an expert at deliberately choosing projects that reflect her own deeply felt convictions. Nearly every character she has ever played has confronted some sort of injustice, often when no one else will. The same is true of her latest role in “The Mauritanian,” which has brought her her eighth acting Golden Globe nomination.
Foster faces off against Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), Olivia Colman (“The Father”), Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”) and Helena Zengel (“News of the World”) in the race for Best Film Supporting Actress. All five competitors are new to the category, but Close and Colman have each won three times outside of it. They both took home Best Actress awards in 2019, with Close winning for her dramatic...

When Jodie Foster accepted her second Academy Award in 1992 for her portrayal of Clarice Starling in “The Silence of the Lambs,” she expressed gratitude for the embracement of “such an incredibly strong and beautiful feminist hero.” In the almost three decades since, she has continued to play all sorts of gutsy women in films like “Contact,” “Panic Room,” and “The Brave One.” But she has been nominated for only one of these roles – “Nell” in 1995. She lost that race to Jessica Lange (“Blue Sky”).

There has been a somewhat of a surge, in recent years, of female empowered revenge tales. Jodie Foster had The Brave One a little while back, Sarah Bolger had the sensational A Good Woman is Hard to Find, I personally enjoyed Natalia Leite directed M.F.A too. These films are all films that immediately spring to mind due to the performances put in by their leading ladies and just how insanely good they were.
Now comes Carey Mulligan, an actress that I’ve obviously seen before and enjoyed her performances but as yet she had failed to really impress me on any real level.
Then I saw Promising Young Woman, a movie so brilliantly written with its jet black comedic and dark, real, tone; expertly directed by Emerald...

Over a decade later, Carey Mulligan may finally be able to return to an Oscars ceremony as a nominee with “Promising Young Woman.”
In 2009, the London-born performer delivered her breakout role in Lone Scherfig’s “An Education” and mustered an Oscar nomination for best actress. Since then, she’s been caught in what I call “one-nomination purgatory” – a place where talented actors are held and, despite awards-worthy turns, can’t muster enough buzz to nab their second nomination. Since 2010, she’s missed out on mentions for “Shame,” “Inside Llewyn Davis” and “Wildlife,” garnering outstanding reviews but coming up short. Could this finally be her invitation back? The reception and reviews so far indicate it could be.
As Cassandra Thomas, a smart and cunning woman righting the wrongs of her past, the 35-year-old is sensationally equipped and compelling in delivering one of her strongest turns yet. The film and performance check...

STXfilms has decided to enter this unconventional awards season with a mighty and timely drama, “The Mauritanian,” formerly called “Prisoner 760,” from Scottish director Kevin Macdonald. The film will be released on Feb. 19, 2021, and could echo the same late-breaking awards success that past movies like “Million Dollar Baby” were able to execute. With an impressive cast that includes Tahar Rahim, Jodie Foster, Benedict Cumberbatch and Shailene Woodley, the inspiring true story could resonate with AMPAS voters, especially its large international membership.
“The Mauritanian” tells the true story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi (Rahim), who was held captive and tortured by the U.S. government in Guantanamo Bay detention camp for 10 years without a charge or trial. Losing faith, he finds hope in defense attorney Nancy Hollander (Foster) and her associate Teri Duncan (Woodley), who face countless legal obstacles in their pursuit of justice.

Apple has given a straight-to-series order to a drama series from Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey’s Team Downey and Adam Perlman.
Based on true events, the Untitled Team Downey and Adam Perlman project is based on Michael Lista’s Toronto Life article “The Sting.” It follows a frustrated Canadian detective who takes on a decades-old cold case in hopes of winning a confession and becoming a hero. The case quickly spirals out of control when the undercover cop attempts an elaborate sting… adding playacting cops, taxpayer resources, and an unexpected friendship with the peculiar target.
Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey and Amanda Burrell will executive produce for Team Downey, with Robert also eyeing a supporting role. Perlman will serve as writer and executive producer. Michael Lista will co-executive produce.
Perlman has worked on Billions for the past four years, most recently rising to executive producer on the most recent season.

Kirk Douglas was not only one of the greatest actors of his generation — he was also one of Hollywood’s biggest risk takers.
The acting legend died at the age of 103, his son Michael Douglas revealed to People on Thursday.
The Oscar winner leaves behind a storied legacy, including the time he stuck his neck out to work with the blacklisted writer, Dalton Trumbo, on the now-classic 1960 film Spartacus, directed by Stanley Kubrick.
Douglas was also an executive producer on the project and enlisted Trumbo to author the script, which was based on a book by another blacklisted author, Howard Fast.

Jacques Tourneur’s ‘big sky’ western gives us the beauty of Colorado mountains plus stunning color images (originally Technicolor) of his attractive cast: Robert Stack, Virginia Mayo, Ruth Roman. North-South antagonisms break out in Denver City, before the Civil War begins, and Robert Stack’s loner opportunist must choose a side. The Wac’s disc includes four Jacques Tourneur short subjects, with mystery themes.

Every “Homecoming” outfit had a specific purpose to designer Catherine Marie Thomas. The Amazon series primarily takes place in an eerie facility for military veterans, where Julia Roberts plays Heidi Bergman, a friendly but stressed counselor who takes a special interest in one of the veterans, Walter Cruz (Stephan James). Thomas wanted to suggest an environment of free will as an illusion with the costuming on Walter and his fellow veterans. “What we wanted to accomplish was this comfortable environment where it seemed like they had a choice of what they wore in a parameter, sort of like a university,” Thomas explains. “You go to a store, you get issued the campus sweatshirt, the shorts, this kind of branding atmosphere.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Thomas above.

This weekend was a first for 2019: Two films grossed over $25 million, led by the second weekend of “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” and a better-than-expected opening for “A Madea Family Funeral.” That’s great news ahead of next weekend, when Disney’s “Captain Marvel” is expected to open over $100 million. Still, with the “Black Panther” performance in the comp, year-over-year performance remains at a staggering 25 percent down.
“Dragon,” which surprised with its series-best domestic opening, fell 45 percent its second weekend, just about even with the previous release. It is at $375 million worldwide, with most countries now open. The DreamWorks Animation series is on its third distributor, so anything close to the previous success is particularly gratifying for the studio.

"She's really freaking me out." Focus Features has debuted the first official trailer for an indie thriller titled Greta, the latest feature from Academy Award-winning Irish filmmaker Neil Jordan. This extra creepy suspense thriller premiered at the Toronto Film Festival already, and opens in theaters in March. From the looks, it seems to be like a new mash-up of A Simple Favor and Misery and Gone Girl, with some other unexpected twists thrown in. Isabelle Huppert stars with Chloe Moretz, two people living in New York City who become friends. But Frances soon discovers "nothing in Greta's life is what it seems." The full cast includes Maika Monroe, Parker Sawyers, Zawe Ashton, Stephen Rea, and Colm Feore. This looks very twisted and crazy and totally demented, which might be just what the doctor ordered. Get a peek below. Here's the first official trailer (+ ...

When I think of cult filmmakers, one of the first names to burst from my brainpan is Frank Henenlotter. From Basket Case (1982) to Bad Biology (2008), his horror films are always loaded with qualities that elude mainstream appeal, such as bizarre humor, over the top gore, and a crazy circus geek aesthetic that almost dares you to look away. Speaking of splattering cranium matter, his second feature length film, Brain Damage (1988) checks off all the Henenboxes and even one more – a trenchant social message about addiction (if you want it).
Produced by Palisades Partners and given a limited release in April, Brain Damage was Henenlotter’s long awaited follow up to Basket Case; well, long awaited at least for horror fans of that legendary micro budget wonder. While the ultra low budget of that gem gave it a unique and gritty charm, Brain Damage’s considerably deeper pockets allowed Henenlotter to...

Women are dominating the summer movie season so far. This prime early June weekend boasts three wide openings — a caper, a horror flick, a crime thriller — with strong female leads. This comes exactly a year after we saw “Wonder Woman” launch the biggest success of summer 2017.
“Ocean’s 8” (Warner Bros.) is the dominant title, with a better than expected weekend of $41,500,000. That’s more than acceptable for a $70-million franchise entry with built-in international appeal. So far the initial domestic results show that whatever risk there was in revamping the ensemble male star vehicle series to feature top actresses paid off.
While the grosses outpace the four series entries going back to 2001, this entry sold the fewest tickets among any of the films. The adjusted opening grosses of the first three were $61 million, $57 million and $48 million for the most recent installment in 2007.

Oscar-winning actress and four-time director Jodie Foster doesn’t consider herself a political person. “I have a thousand opinions, and I certainly give money and do a lot of things behind the scenes,” she said in a recent interview with IndieWire, “but it’s not my personality to believe that celebrities have the expertise to try to influence other people’s ideas or their feelings, politically.” However, she has a keen understanding of how the undertones of some of her features often fuel inherently political discussions.
More than a decade after her role in “The Brave One” lead her to speak out about gun control, the topic remains at the forefront of America’s culture wars, and Foster is still advocating for the kind of legislation she touted back in 2007. Now promoting her starring role in “Hotel Artemis,” Foster took the occasion to return to the hot button issue.

Two of the biggest movie stars in the 1960’s and 1970’s starred in a film called Papillon. Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman were household names at the time and together they headlined the movie for director Franklin J. Schaffner, best known for Planet Of The Apes (1968) and Patton (1970).

John Goodman shockingly never won an Emmy for his role as working-class father Dan Conner in “Roseanne” despite competing seven consecutive times as Best Comedy Actor for the ABC sitcom (1989-1995). He did eventually win as Best Drama Guest Actor in 2007 for “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” but now he could finally cash in that “Roseanne” Emmy I.O.U. with the upcoming series revival, premiering on Tuesday, March 27. But Goodman hasn’t only made a name for himself on TV. In honor of his return to the small screen, let’s take a look back at some of his best big-screen performances. Tour through our photo gallery above of Goodman’s 20 greatest films, ranked from worst to best.
Surprisingly (and criminally), not one of these roles brought Goodman an Oscar nomination. He did compete at the Golden Globes as Best Supporting Actor for “Barton Fink” (1991), but the academy...

Twilight Time presents Irish auteur Neil Jordan’s 1982 directorial debut Angel (aka Danny Boy) on Blu-ray, an obscurely regarded gem from the great filmmaker. A visually vibrant examination of the entrenched malaise infecting a region in the midst of what’s been referred to as “the troubles” (or the Northern Ireland Conflict, a decades spanning political issue concerning the constitutional status of Ireland in the UK vs. a United Ireland, informed also by religious views and ethnic background), this melancholy revenge drama showcases Jordan’s enduring muse Stephen Rea, as well as themes he’d continue to enhance in subsequent features. Hampered by a lack of developing tension, mostly due to a dramatic catalyst granted more weight than it could possibly wield, it’s certainly a solemn precursor to Jordan’s later masterpiece that decade, Mona Lisa (1986).
Danny (Rea) is a talented saxophonist traveling around with his band to different gigs around Northern Ireland.

We have the first trailer for director Jay Roach‘s upcoming drama Trumbo. The movie stars Bryan Cranston as Douglas Trumbo, a Hollywood screenwriter who famously refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee and was subsequently blacklisted and sentenced to an 11-month stay in prison.
As you will learn from the trailer, Trumbo continued to write screenplays under pseudonyms, even winning two Academy Awards in the process for Roman Holiday and The Brave One. You might learn some more from the trailer as it tend to divulge too much for my taste.
The film will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before its November 6th theatrical release, and also stars Helen Mirren, Diane Lane, Louis C.K., Elle Fanning, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Louis C.K., and Alan Tudyk.

Day of the Mother: Stone’s Flighty Revenge Thriller Favors Laughs
There’s a certain degree of entertainment to be gleaned from director Charles Stone III’s latest feature, Lila & Eve, from first time screenwriter Pat Gilfallan, though unfortunately in the form of unintentional comedy. Derided as a camp after its late premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, it’s Stone’s first directorial feature in over a decade (he’s been working in television since the 2004 Bernie Mac headlined Mr 3000, including the widely discussed TLC Lifetime film CrazySexyCool), and most likely won’t garner much favorable attention. Bearing the familiar turns we’ve become accustomed to in the limited subgenre of female driven revenge films, Gilfallan peppers his scenario with bits of illogical instances and eventually neuters the shock value of his big twist well before the third act begins. And even though this robs the film of its sleazy,...

When alien archaeologists — or future human historians — look back on the films from the post-wwii era through today, and into the foreseeable future, they will surely come to the conclusion that girls and women of our time didn’t do much of anything besides marry men, mother children, and stand aside and applaud while the boys engage in all manner of exciting exploits.
Which is, of course, complete nonsense.
With my new Kickstarter, I am seeking funding for a project to detail on a very fine, nitty-gritty, film-by-film basis just how badly movies fail girls and women. (More details and links to supporting materials can be found and commented on here.)
I hope you will help support an effort that is badly needed and that has not been attempted before. A pledge of as little as $1 can help.
Why does it matter if girls and women aren’t well represented on film?...

From Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures comes The Judge, which pairs two-time Oscar nominee Robert Downey Jr. and Oscar winner Robert Duvall, starring together for the first time on the big screen. Doubles down on the first film’s angry approach to class, inequality, and violence, and once again reflects an image of America that is ugly but only slightly distorted. I’m “biast” (pro): loved the first film
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Last year, The Purge astonished me with one of the most daring speculative conceits to come out of a Hollywood studio in maybe forever, or certainly since the dystopic sci-fi of the 1970s. In a near-future America under what appears to be a religious dictatorship called the New Founding Fathers, all crime including murder is permitted — nay, encouraged — one night a year for a 12-hour period called the Purge. News
There's a strong argument that Michael Winner's Death Wish, starring Charles Bronson, has been remade several times already. Notwithstanding the collection of sequels, there have been plenty of films that have effectively told the same story. Take the Neil Jordan movie The Brave One, starring Jodie Foster, for a start.
But an official remake? At one stage, it was a project that Joe Carnahan (The Grey, The A-Team) was circling. Then it seemed to fall apart. However now, the new Death Wish may be back on the cards.
Chatting to Slash Film, Carnahan was asked about Death Wish, and he told the site that "you know what's interesting about that? [Death Wish] may be coming back around because that script, to me, is so special and so… that’s one that I’ll pay them to do,...
