Marvel Plans New TV Show Based on Existing Superhero
Ming-Na Wen, Clark Gregg, Iain De Caestecker, Nick Blood, Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennet, and Elizabeth Henstridge in Marvel : Les Agents du S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013)
Marvel is continuing to expand its TV slate, bringing on Oscar-winning writer John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) to develop a new TV series for ABC. Entertainment Weekly reports that the writer's deal involves, "reinventing an existing Marvel superhero character or property for ABC," but it wasn't revealed which character will be the focus of this show. The news comes just one week after we reported that ABC and Marvel are developing a spinoff series for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., even though that program hasn't been officially renewed, although it seems likely.

If the project gets a series order, it will be the third Marvel show to air on ABC, following Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and this year's Marvel's Agent Carter, which hasn't been renewed for a second season yet either. It's possible that either the Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff or this new untitled series could serve as a midseason...

[Editor's Note: This post is presented in partnership with Time Warner Cable Movies On Demand in support of Indie Film Month. Today's pick "Jimi: All Is by My Side" is available now On Demand. This interview was originally published last fall.] John Ridley has been honing his craft for years, apprenticing with John Wells on "Third Watch," through multiple movie scripts ("U-Turn," "Red Tails") and television series ("Barbershop," "Platinum") to his first feature "Cold Around the Heart." He wrote the Oscar-winning script for "12 Years a Slave" as well as his sophomore directing effort, Jimi Hendrix slice-of-life "All Is by My Side," now available to view on video on demand platforms. The Jimi Hendrix estate has been holding up a proper biopic for decades. But one night screenwriter John Ridley (who won the Oscar for his screen adaptation of Solomon Northup's  "12 Years a...

ABC orders racial drama pilot from '12 Years a Slave' writer
John Ridley
ABC has given a pilot order to a TV project from the screenwriter of the acclaimed film 12 Years a Slave.

The network has greenlit a pilot for American Crime, written by John Ridley (Barbershop), who will also executive produce along with Michael McDonald (Web Therapy). The pilot’s logline isn’t hugely descriptive, but gives some sense of the storyline: “The personal lives of the players involved in a racially charged trial are examined as their worlds are turned upside down.”

12 Years a Slave surprised awards prognosticators by taking home the Golden Globe for best drama series on Sunday.

ABC has put into development American Crime, a racially tinged drama pilot penned by John Ridley, the screenwriter of the critically acclaimed film 12 Years A Slave.

Set in California’s Central Valley, American Crime looks at how a racially charged murder and the subsequent trial are examined through the personal lives of the victims, the accused and their families. As the case takes on greater meaning in the community, it brings to the forefront America’s hardened views on race, class and gender politics.

John Ridley
John Ridley has been honing his craft for years, apprenticing with John Wells on "Third Watch," through multiple movie scripts ("U-Turn," "Red Tails") and television series ("Barbershop," "Platinum") to his first feature "Cold Around the Heart." He wrote the script for Oscar frontrunner "12 Years a Slave" as well as his sophomore directing effort, Jimi Hendrix slice-of-life "All Is by My Side," which was picked up by Open Road after a successful debut at the Toronto Film Festival.   Anne Thompson: "12 Years a Slave" blew me away, and I'm not the only one. What brought you to the film? John Ridley: Five years ago now, "Hunger" was screening at CAA and I was invited to the screening. I'd also given Steve McQueen a manuscript I'd written. Jennifer Lawrence in Hunger Games (2012)
Casting Net: Melissa McCarthy in talks for a James Bond inspired role; Plus James McAvoy as Dr. Frankenstein, more
Jennifer Lawrence in Hunger Games (2012)
• Melissa McCarthy can basically do whatever she wants these days, especially alongside her Bridesmaids and The Heat director Paul Feig. Her latest awesome endeavor? Potentially starring in Susan Cooper, a spy comedy about a James Bond-esque character. McCarthy, of course, would play the female Bond spinoff. According to the report, the project is being developed as a potential franchise and Feig would direct. Scheduling could be an issue, though. McCarthy has multiple projects with her production company On the Day as well as her Mike & Molly commitments. Still, McCarthy as a James Bond-type sounds delightfully promising. [The Wrap]

Actors Hired to Play Osama Bin Laden in Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty and Keith Richards in All Is By My Side
British actor Ashley Charles is set to play Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richard in "All Is By My Side," which is a Jimi Hendrix biopic starring Andre 3000 (Four Brothers) and directed by John Ridley ("Barbershop"). The film is currently shooting in Dublin. Hayley Atwell (Captain America) plays Linda Keith, Keith Richards' girlfriend, who discovered Hendrix performing in a nightclub and claimed to have given Hendrix Richards' Fender Stratocaster guitar and his demo of Tim Rose singing "Hey Joe," which became Hendrix's first hit. Meanwhile, Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) has cast the role of Osama Bin Laden in her "Zero Dark Thirty" film, which recounts the killing of the Al-Qaeda leader. At one point it was rumored that Bin Laden will not be shown in the film, but now comes word that British actor Ricky Sekhon is playing him.

Andre 3000 To Play Jimi Hendrix in Biopic
Outkast's Andre Benjamin, aka Andre 3000, is developing and set to star in a biopic about legendary guitar player Jimi Hendrix. The film is titled All Is By My Side and is slated to start filming in Ireland later this month. Iftn reports (via FirstShowing) that the story will focus on Hendrix's time in England between 1966 and 1967 when he worked on his debut album, Are You Experienced.

John Ridley is making his feature directing debut. Producing is Tristan Orpen Lynch at Subotica Entertainment, Richard Kelly’s Darko Entertainment, and Britain's Matador Pictures. Ridley penned scripts for Three Kings, Undercover Brother, Barbershop, and Red Tails.

Benjamin has not been on the big screen since 2008, after starring in Be Cool, Four Brothers, Revolver, Idlewild, Battle in Seattle, and Semi-Pro. As a musician, he knows first-hand what it is like to be on stage. That, coupled with his uncanny resemblance to Hendrix, makes him a great casting choice.

Kevin Hart Is Having A Moment — But Is He The Next Eddie Murphy?
Kevin Hart is noticeably short for a guy. He has a standup comedy show called I’m a Grown Little Man for Pete’s sake. At that height it’s either be the jokester or become the joke. Well, Kev’s laughing all right — all the way to the bank. Hart has all but been omitted from lists of comedians on the verge of a huge breakthrough. That may all change with his stellar performance in last weekend’s box office hit, Think Like a Man, which offers him just the type of exposure he needs to reach a larger audience. As Cedric, a bitter divorcee who can’t stop talking about his wife or arguing with her, Hart is knee-slapping funny. And he’s following up that breakthrough role with a small but punch-line-heavy part in this weekend’s big release The Five-Year Engagement.

Hart’s moment hasn’t...

TV Review: Manipulative, Messy ‘Miami Medical’
Chicago – Television drama is usually a formulaic proposition but rarely has a show been more blatantly derivative of other programs currently on the air than CBS’s new hospital drama, “Miami Medical,” a bizarre, ineffective hybrid of “CSI: Miami” and “Trauma”. Buried in the ratings nether regions of Friday nights, this Jerry Bruckheimer-produced show might just barely deliver for viewers exhausted after a long week of work, but they’ll have forgotten it by Saturday morning.

Television Rating: 2.0/5.0

Let’s see. “Three Rivers” failed on CBS. If “Trauma” was on any other network than the failing NBC, it would have been cancelled by now. So why should “Miami Medical” be the exception? Well, it is better than the narcoleptic “Three Rivers” and CBS certainly has a more golden touch than the peacock network, but fans of the now-gone “Numb3rs,” which this show replaces on Friday nights, should be angry at this mediocre alternative.

Brett Ratner teams with Fame director on Blade Runner-style sci-fi epic
Director Kevin Tancharoen, who helmed last year's remake of 80s musical hit Fame as his first feature film project, is leaving behind lycra and legwarmers to venture into sci-fi territory.

Will we now see performing arts students dancing in the streets on top of spaceships? Probably not...

He is to make a sci-fi flick called Arcana, which is set up at Rat Entertainment and will be produced by Brett Ratner (director of Red Dragon, X-Men: The Last Stand and the Rush Hour series) and Jay Stern (a producer on Rush Hour 3). Universal will distribute.

Tancharoen (pictured right) told Moviehole: "Arcana is a unique blend of the graphic-novel backdrop - like Blade Runner - and shot like 300, and has a little bit of Warriors mixed in there, with a little bit of martial arts, so it's got a lot of crazy elements in there. It's going to be really cool.

What Mystery Will be Behind George Lucas' 'Red Tails'?
Anthony Hemingway is far from a seasoned director, but a kid just out of film school is more likely to do a better job than George Lucas so it is a good thing he has handed off helming duties of his long gestating Tuskegee Airmen flick to another director. I now have to wonder, after Miracle at St. Anna, will this film actually get right to the point or will there have to be a fake mystery behind the whole thing to lure audiences into the theater? Hopefully not, because this flick really could be good. The film is Red Tails, a WWII action adventure about the Tuskegee Airmen. It revolves around the young pilots who overcame institutional racism in the military to form the Tuskegee Airmen, the fliers who become the first African-American fighter pilots in U.S. military history. Their planes featured the red-painted tails that give the film its title.
