Billy Woods’ New Album Explores What We Fear and Why
Image
On a late spring afternoon (that doesn’t feel like April), Prospect Heights’ Leland Eating and Drinking House is pretty empty. Four people are sitting at tables in the upscale cafe, chatting over a playlist of early ‘00s hits from artists like Ashanti.

Eventually, Billy Woods arrives wearing a Black jacket, black shirt, and jeans. He says he’s feeling under the weather after several European show dates. Crosscontinental tours are becoming common fare for Woods, the Brooklyn-based rapper boasting one of rap’s elite pens. He’s been rapping since the ‘00s,...

10 Must-Watch Halle Berry Movies and TV Show
Image
Halle Berry isn’t just a Hollywood star, she’s a full-blown cinematic powerhouse. She started as a model, dazzled in beauty pageants, and then took over our screens with sheer talent and undeniable presence. From storming through X-Men (literally) to breaking hearts in Monster’s Ball and throwing punches in Bruised, Berry has done it all. Even when the movies didn’t always hit, she still managed to leave an impression.

But Berry isn’t just about action and superhero flicks, she’s dabbled in drama, thrillers, and even James Bond’s world, proving she can steal the show in any genre. Remember her in Die Another Day? That iconic orange bikini moment was only the beginning of how she redefined the Bond girl image. And let’s not forget John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, where she and her trained attack dogs made action scenes look like an art form.

Halle Berry became the first Black woman to win an Academy Award and remains the only one to this day. In her illustrious career, Berry has portrayed many incredible characters in some of the greatest movies. Among her many remarkable roles, some of the films stand out more than others.

The Halle Berry Horror Flop With 0% On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
When Halle Berry made her big-screen debut as the crack-addicted Vivian in the most harrowing section of Spike Lee's "Jungle Fever," she put the entire world on notice that she was going to be an actor first and a movie star second. Obviously, she would quickly learn early in her career to play the Hollywood game and accept thinly-written roles that asked her to do little more than look like one of the most breathtakingly beautiful people on the planet, but she never went more than a year or two without challenging herself. This was particularly difficult to do, given the dearth of complex roles being written for Black women at the time.

Berry was 10 years into her film acting career when she landed the role that would change everything for her. As Leticia Musgrove in Marc Forster's bleak 2001 drama "Monster's Ball," she summoned up a fierce symphony of heartbreak,...

The Virgin Of The Quarry Lake Review: Teenage Girl, Unrequited Lover, Budding Witch [Sundance 2025]
The Virgin of The Quarry Lake, adapted from the short stories of Mariana Enríquez (Things We Lost in The Fire), recently celebrated its World Premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. It’s a simmering, atmospheric story that has horror in its heart but mostly plays like a brooding summer hangout with a group of girls on the verge of adulthood where the vibe is all wrong. It’s an Elevated Horror that spends the majority of its time in a coming-of-age story but packs a creeping cold open and a ripping finish.

Directed by Laura Casabé (The Returned) from a screenplay by Benjamin Naishtat (Rojo), this early 2000’s-timepiece follows a young girl caught in a love triangle with a boy and an older “more experienced” woman. In the heat of the Argentinian summer, Natalia (Dolores Oliverio) has fallen in love with Diego (Agustín Sosa). It would be a summer romance for the ages,...

Every Time Station 19's Dean Miller Appeared in Grey's Anatomy, Explained
Image
Viewers assumed that if there were going to be a Grey's Anatomy spin-off, it would probably focus on the side hustles of one of the primary characters. However, it surprised fans when Station 19 premiered in 2018 as an official part of the Grey's Anatomy universe. The series focused on the lives of first responders, particularly firefighters, in a similar capacity as the surgeons of Grey Sloan Memorial. Among these unsung heroes was Dean Miller, an integral part of Station 19 and one of the few characters who left the show midway.

Several characters from both shows crossed paths in different crossover episodes where the responders and the doctors connected over their shared experiences and traumas. Dean Miller regularly popped up whenever Shonda Rhimes wanted to mix things up. The brave firefighter had an interesting and emotional arc that fitted well in both Grey's Anatomy and Station 19's narrative.

Dean...

Long-Awaited 'Practical Magic' Sequel Has Finally Summoned a Director
Image
Deadline reports that Oscar, Golden Globe, and Emmy-winning director Susanne Bier has been tapped to direct the sequel to the beloved 1998 witchy rom-com Practical Magic. While the deal with Warner Bros., the studio behind the film, isn't quite sealed yet, it is a promising update on the highly anticipated reunion of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.

This will be a reteaming for both stars as Bullock worked with Bier on Netflix's Bird Box, an adaptation of the horror novel of the same name by Josh Malerman, and Kidman worked with the director on two previous projects, the HBO series The Undoing and the Netflix miniseries The Perfect Couple. Bier won an Academy Award for best international feature for her 2010 film In a Better World. She also directed the 2007 drama Things We Lost in the Fire, starring Halle Berry and Benicio del Toro, and is the main creative force behind...

Bird Box (2018) – What Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
Sometimes books are mega hits and get turned into movies that take off. There’s just something that captures the zeitgeist and it’s destined to be. Harry Potter came out of nowhere and then turned into a franchise of books, video games, Lego sets, and of course movies. Other times, authors release something that will undoubtedly get picked up as the track record for success is already there. This is the Stephen King special or even Michael Crichton when he was still active. Adaptations can come from cases of re-adaptations like Dracula, Frankenstein, and other classics that get recycled over and over again, especially of they fall into the public domain. There’s the rare case, though, that an unknown author has a manuscript pop and movie studios jump at the chance to create something new. The journey and strange tale of the author of Bird Box falls under that last category.

‘The Lighthouse’ Producer Rodrigo Teixeira Re-Teams With Dominga Sotomayor
Image
Chilean director Domingo Sotomayor is re-teaming with Sao Paulo-based Rt Features to make her third feature, “Niebla.”

CAA Media Finance arranged the financing and will represent sales rights. The cruise ship-set drama is currently in development and set to shoot in 2022.

Rt Features previously co-produced Sotomayor’s second feature, “Too Late to Die Young,” which saw her become the first woman to win a best director Leopard at Switzerland’s Locarno Festival.

Written by Sotomayor, “Niebla” reprises a scenario sketched in hugely different contexts in “Thursday Till Sunday” and “Too Late to Die Young” of characters on the brink of self-awareness at critical junctures in their lives.

Here, however, the protagonist is an adult, not the children of “Too Late to Die Young” nor the lovelorn adolescent of “Too Late,” and most seem in denial.

“‘Niebla’ takes place on a cruise ship heading towards a distant nondescript coastline. In the middle of the ocean,...

‘Call Me By Your Name’ Producer Rodrigo Teixeira Teams With Prano Bailey-Bond on ‘Things We Lost in the Fire’
Image
“Call Me By Your Name” and “The Lighthouse” producer Rodrigo Teixeira of Rt Features, and Lourenço Sant’Anna, also a producer on “The Lighthouse,” have teamed with Prano Bailey-Bond on “Things We Lost in the Fire,” her follow-up to her breakout Sundance title “Censor.”

Bailey-Bond will write the screenplay, which is based on a short story of the same name from Argentine journalist and novelist Mariana Enriquez, with Anthony Fletcher. Alan Terpins is serving as executive producer.

In the film, a terrorized female community resorts to ever more extreme actions in response to male violence. The story marries elements of horror and feminism in a subversive commentary on the modern day beauty myth; a dark vision of a society where women take back control of their image in the most drastic manner imaginable.

In 2017, Enriquez’s “Las cosas que perdimos en el fuego” was translated into English by writer Megan McDowell,...

Susanne Bier Steps In as Academy Switches International Film Committee Chairs
Image
Danish director Susanne Bier is stepping in to replace outgoing International Feature Film Executive Committee co-head Diane Weyermann. Academy President David Rubin appointed Directors Branch governor Bier to co-chair the committee alongside Writers Branch governor Larry Karaszewski.

Weyermann, the documentary chief at Participant, elected to step down as co-chair and recuse herself from serving on the Executive Committee due to her professional relationship with “Collective,” which Romania officially selected for this year’s International Feature Film competition. Weyermann is not credited on the film and while Participant did not finance it, Participant did co-acquire “Collective” and is sharing its release with Magnolia Pictures.

The Danish Bier directed Oscar-winner “In a Better World,” the Oscar-nominated “After the Wedding,” “Open Hearts,” and “Brothers.” She has also directed film and television in Hollywood, including HBO series “The Undoing,” starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant, Netflix smash “Bird Box,” starring Sandra Bullock, Emmy-winning “The Night Manager,...

Diane Weyermann Steps Down From International Feature Film’s Exec Committee
Image
Diane Weyermann, the content chief for Participant Media, has stepped down as co-chair of the international feature film’s executive committee, Variety has confirmed.

Weyermann decided to leave her role as co-chair of the executive committee due to her professional relationship with the documentary “Collective,” which has been selected to represent Romania in this year’s International Feature Film competition. “Collective” was produced by Participant.

Alhough Weyermann is not personally credited on the film and was not responsible for the financing, Participant—for which she is head of documentaries—co-acquired the film and is handling its release.

The Academy president David Rubin has appointed the Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier (“The Night Manager”), who is currently the governor of the Directors Branch, to co-chair the committee alongside Larry Karaszewski, the governor of the Writers Branch.

One of Scandinavia’s most celebrated auteurs, Bier previously won an Oscar with her Danish drama...

Halle Berry
Halle Berry's 10 Best Movies, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Halle Berry
Halle Berry has had quite a checkered career in Hollywood. When it comes to plum roles and quality movies she's participated in over the past three decades, the stunning Oscar-winning actress tends to either feast or famine. Hit or miss. She'll deliver an award-worthy turn in one movie and give a shaky performance in the next. She'll do Monster's Ball, then Gothika, Catwoman, then Things We Lost in the Fire. See the inconsistencies?

Susanne Bier
Susanne Bier To Direct Nicole Kidman In "The Undoing" at HBO
Susanne Bier
Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier has bounced back in a big way. Her career came into sharp focus in the early aughts, but was minted later that decade when “After the Wedding” (2006; it made Mads Mikkelsen a household name) and “In a Better World” (2010) both scored Academy Award nominations for Best Foreign Language Film (“In A Better World” would win). She had done Hollywood in between (the underrated “Things We Lost In The Fire”; 2007), but she was poised for huge things when Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper had agreed to star in “Serena” just as both their stars were going supernova (Lawrence was already an Academy Award winner before the film’s release).

Susanne Bier To Direct ‘The Undoing’ HBO Limited Series Starring Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidman at an event for Paperboy (2012)
This is a major coup for HBO — Susanne Bier has signed on to direct all six episodes of The Undoing, the network’s high-profile upcoming limited series starring Nicole Kidman and written by David E. Kelley.

Bier, who also will serve as an executive producer, has been at the top of every network’s list of director choices following her work on The Night Manager, which earned her an Emmy Award. She had been unavailable, working on her feature Bird Box; this marks her first TV commitment since The Night Manager and first for an American TV production. Like the British The Night Manager, The Undoing is a limited series with Bier as the sole director.

An adaptation of Jean Hanff Korelitz’s book You Should Have Known, The Undoing centers on Grace Sachs (Kidman), who is living the only life she ever wanted for herself. She’s a successful...

Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston in The Night Manager (2016)
‘Night Manager’s’ Susanne Bier to Direct Nicole Kidman in HBO Limited Series ‘The Undoing’
Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston in The Night Manager (2016)
“The Night Manager” filmmaker Susanne Bier has been set as the director for “The Undoing,” HBO’s next limited series from Nicole Kidman and “Big Little Lies” boss David E. Kelley, an individual with knowledge of production tells TheWrap.

Based on the book “You Should Have Known” by Jean Hanff Korelitz, the six-episode series stars Kidman as Grace Sachs, a loving wife, devoted mother and successful therapist whose life unravels when she makes discoveries about her husband’s past.

Here’s the official logline for the series: Grace Sachs (Kidman) is living the only life she ever wanted for herself. She’s a successful therapist, has a devoted husband and young son who attends an elite private school in New York City. Overnight a chasm opens in her life: a violent death, a missing husband, and, in the place of a man Grace thought she knew, only a chain of terrible revelations.

Venice Facetime: Susanne Bier Talks About the Vr Experience
Susanne Bier
Danish director Susanne Bier is president of the jury for its Venice Virtual Reality section. Over the past three decades, she’s received widespread acclaim for projects ranging from the globe-trotting 2016 miniseries adaptation of John le Carre’s “The Night Manager,” which earned her an Emmy, to dark family dramas such as 2007’s “Things We Lost in the Fire” and 2010’s “In a Better World,” the latter of which won the Oscar for best foreign language film. But she’s never worked in an “immersive” medium, be it virtual reality (Vr), augmented reality (Ar) or mixed reality (Mr).

Why do you think Venice chose you for the jury?

I guess I’m a traditional narrative filmmaker, but I come out of a more innovative cinema. At times, I thought I was sitting somewhere in between being considered way too mainstream and way too arthouse. So I’m very honored, but...
