You just want to die a painful death while watching this TV show, every Minute feels just like thousands of nails cutting through your skin.
I've rewatched it so many times! Lena has defined my adolescence, especially the beginning of her relationship with the first boyfriend (avoiding spoilers). This show is a must see and it's truly HILARIOUS, but I have to warn you - first two seasons are a miracle, but the third one is a fever dream that should not exist (watch only as a separate story, the real one stops at the great ending of the 2nd season)
Turkish for Beginners has, so far only been shown in Germany, and Italy as well. Sweet, funny, and sometimes sad television series that centers around a German woman who is in a relationship with a Turkish police officer. He has a son and a daughter, and their mother is deceased. She likewise has a son and a daughter, and when they decide to move in together, there is much chaos and confusion, as cultures collide and love develops between the young Lena, and her stepbrother, Cem. "Turkisch für Anfanger" is a colorful and creative show, fast-paced and never boring. It only ran for 3 seasons, but there are currently DVD's available for the series. Unfortunately there are no subtitles for other languages, but that might change if this show ever gets the attention it deserves! For those living outside of Germany, the most interesting thing about this show is seeing how the Türkisch and German cultures exist together in the city of Berlin. When watching this show, one can forget that racism exists. Very sweet and special program!
I first thought this was a program to teach me a foreign language. Ha, ha. Delightful, funny, deep, inspiring story about people from two radically different cultures learning to get along. Everyone should see this. Wish there was an English version.
The first two seasons I'd go at least for an 8/10, when it comes to rating this. The third season though is quite the downfall (or as the term goes, jumps the shark). Whle it still isn't a bad show (and for German standards it's almost phenomenal), it does lack the drive and hillarity of the way this started. Taking cliches and turning them upside down more often than not really works wonders for this. While there are still moments where this may be called misguided and uneven (depiction of certain people or nationalities), this is not meant to be seen as too serious.
Something that is or gets way over the top by season 3, where it loses touch with "reality" many times. One of the German TV shows that was ever produced and shining a much needed light on a much maligned and often underrepresented group of people, this almost does some social work ... and was quite the phenomenon when it first aired ... and still finds new fans I reckon! And why not ... just don't expect much of the last season
