There are plenty of contenders for the greatest film of the 2000s decade. The first decade of the new century was absolutely stacked to the brim with instant classics in every conceivable genre, and fans have been relentless in their debate over the best of the best. Comedy fans come to the table with all-time greats like Superbad, Juno, and The Royal Tenenbaums. Action fans pull The Dark Knight, Kill Bill, and Children of Men out of their holsters. Finally, drama fans mention Academy Award-winning heavy hitters from 2007, like No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood. An often forgotten contender for best of the decade, however, comes in the form of a fellow 2007 release that was completely shut out at the 80th Academy Awards ceremony.

The “Juno” position at the first Paris show on Sunday (March 16) was the perfect choice.

Sabrina Carpenter went from sweet to spicy during her Short n’ Sweet tour stop at the O2 in London on Saturday night. While making the night’s honorary arrest during “Juno,” the singer chose Spice Girls’ Emma Bunton as the recipient of her fuzzy pink handcuffs. “You’re kind of spicing up my life a little bit,” she told Baby Spice.
“Please, please, please Arrest me for being a fan!!! @sabrinacarpenter you were amazing,” Bunton wrote on Instagram, where she reshared a clip from the arrest. In a photo dump...

Following a recent scandal alleging that the folk artist and activist Buffy Sainte-Marie had fabricated her Canadian Indigenous roots, the Polaris Music Prize and Juno Awards have revoked honors bestowed on the musician.
The release of a 2023 documentary produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) called Sainte-Marie’s Indigenous identity into question. A fervent activist for Indigenous causes, as reflected in songs like “Now That the Buffalo’s Gone,” Sainte-Marie had long claimed that she was born and raised on a Cree reservation in Saskatchewan. However, the CBC program uncovered she was in fact born in Massachusetts.
Earlier this year, Sainte-Marie, was stripped of her Order of Canada appointment. Now, the Polaris Music Prize and the Juno Awards have decided that her collected accolades from both institutions will be rescinded, due to her inability to provide tangible proof of her Canadian and/or Indigenous identity.

Filmmaker and USC alumnus Jason Reitman is slated to receive the Jack Oakie and Victoria Horne Oakie Master of Comedy Award at the seventh edition of the USC Comedy Festival, set for March 28-30 at the campus.
The three-day festival aims to examine the role that comedy plays in shaping popular culture and social movements. The tribute to Reitman, the helmer behind such films as 2024’s “Saturday Night,” 2009’s “Up in the Air” and 2007’s “Juno,” will close the festival and include a Q&a on stage with film historian and critic Leonard Maltin.
USC launched the event in 2011, the same year it established the USC Comedy department with the goal of “championing comedy as a field of university study.” The festival has been held every other year since. Legacy sequels, reboots, and delayed follow-up installments are extremely commonplace in the world of horror filmmaking and it sounds like “Jennifer’s Body,” a cult horror film that ended up becoming quite popular long after its theatrical release, is potentially getting a second installment over fifteen years later.
Written by Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (“Juno”) it was helmed by Karyn Kusama and released by 20th Century Studios (formerly 20th Century Fox), which paired actresses Amanda Seyfried and Megan Fox with the latter being comically sacrificed (by a character played by Adam Brody) only to be resurrected as a demonic entity that starts feeding on her male classmates.

Hopefully you haven't had your fill of legacy sequels or continuations yet because it sounds like a new Jennifer's Body movie might be in development! During the recent premiere of her Canadian drama Seven Veils, star Amanda Seyfried chatted with some fans and, when asked about the sequel possibility, cheekily said that she thinks a sequel might be happening. Watch the TikTok video here.
Someone asks her if she just confirmed the news and Seyfried responds, "I didn't confirm it, I said I think," and then she playfully winks at the group. That sounds like promising news to me! Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean Jennifer's Body 2 is really going to happen, but it is certainly a positive sign of the movie's future.
It would be nice to see Seyfried and Megan Fox reunite with writer Diablo Cody and maybe even director Karyn Kusama. The 2009 comedy horror movie was heavily...

We are well past the point of Peak TV — the era named by FX President John Landgraf about just how many television shows and channels seem to exist now — where we used to only have a handful of network options and a smattering of cable choices. Now, we have hundreds upon hundreds of shows each year, yet so few shows break through the noise unless you happen to notice that one of them has been canceled despite never having had the name recognition of something like "The Big Bang Theory" or "Game of Thrones." What's more, some shows can have a noticeable impact at the moment, but they don't seem to resonate once they're off the air. Those two aforementioned titles are among the most familiar to the American masses despite not having aired new episodes for years. It helps that they've each had spin-offs, and live on via reruns in some cases,...

Love, laughs, and labor pains — these movies prove pregnancy is the ultimate plot twist.
I watched the new Amy Schumer comedy,“Kinda Pregnant” with my wife last night and it was (on the whole) a good time. First, it’s actually funny and second, it pays off the high concept in all the ways you want it to (more on this shortly). I love romantic comedies, and so it got me thinking about all the other rom-com pregnancy movies out there. Not that many get made (Hollywood is a male-dominated industry), but there are some excellent movies among the ones that did. Here’s my list of the top 7 pregnancy rom-coms you can stream right now.

Wicked, Conclave, and Nosferatu took top honors at the 29th Annual Art Directors Guild Awards (aka the Excellence in Production Design Awards) Saturday. Rachael Harris hosted the show from the InterContinental Ballroom in Los Angeles.
The Art Directors Guild divides its top film prizes into Period, Contemporary, and Fantasy Feature categories, which went to the Oscar-nominated production designers for Nosferatu, Conclave, and Wicked, respectively. Since the inception of these awards, the winner of one of those three has gone on to win the Best Art Direction/Production Design Oscar in 19 of the 28 years and 10 of the past 11 years. The three films will go up against Dune: Part Two and The Brutalist next month for the production design Academy Award, with Wicked considered not only the frontrunner but a heavily-favored one at that.
Nosferatu won top Period Feature over fellow nominees A Complete Unknown, The Brutalist, Gladiator II, and Saturday Night.

“Nosferatu” (Craig Lathrop), “Wicked” (Nathan Crowley), and “Conclave” (Suzie Davies) were the period, fantasy, and contemporary production design winners at the 29th annual Art Directors Guild Awards, held February 15 at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.
Also winning for animation was “The Wild Robot”, following its Annies sweep and Ves prizes. On the TV side, “Shōgun,” “Squid Game,” “Fallout,” and “The Penguin” were the winners for their production designers in their respective categories.
The Lathrop win for “Nosferatu” was not surprising when you consider that “The Brutalist” production designer Judy Becker is not an Adg member. She has been the presumptive Oscar favorite for channeling Oscar-nominated Adrien Brody’s visionary architect, László Tóth, in applying a Brutalist style to the architectural designs of mid-century Pennsylvania with its bold shapes and function over form aesthetic.
Lathrop, who has worked on all of director Robert Eggers’ other films, received his first Oscar nomination for “Nosferatu.

“Conclave, “Nosferatu,” and “Wicked” won honors at the 28th Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) Excellence in Production Design Awards, Saturday at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.
The Adg divides live-action features into three categories. Production designer Craig Lathrop’s work on early 1800s-set horror adaptation “Nosferatu” won the award in the period film category. Production designer Nathan Crowley’s creation of the “Wicked” land of Oz won the award for a fantasy film, and production designer Suzie Davies’ Vatican sets delivered “Conclave” the trophy for a contemporary film.
“Conclave,” “Nosteratu” and “Wicked,” along with Adg nominees “The Brutalist” and “Dune: Part Two” are nominated for the Oscar in production design. A year ago, “Poor Things” won the Adg Award for a fantasy film en route to an Oscar win in the category.

The early 2000s were known for a number of outlandish comedy films. With creative minds like Judd Apatow and Adam McKay in the director and producer's seat and hilarious actors like Seth Rogen and Will Ferrell bringing their films to life, many of the films that emerged during this period shaped how modern audiences perceive comedy.
Today, the comedy genre can feel distant from this pivotal period, although more diverse voices are making a name for themselves in the comedic field. It's fun to revisit the past and remember the films that reflected a time that was truly like no other.

There are only a handful of dramedies in recent years that have been just as endearing as they are timeless. Perhaps the likes of Juno, The Truman Show, andBegin Again may come to mind – flicks that induce just as many belly laughs as they do heartfelt tears. Writer/director James Griffiths’ The Ballad of Wallis Island is a quaint little film that fits such a bill. It presents itself as an innocent comedy infused with a bit of lovely folk music but reveals itself as a heartfelt tearjerker that sneaks up on you and will tear and gnaw at your heartstrings.

‘Bubble & Squeak’ Review: Cabbages Are Banned in Quirky Sundance Comedy, but the Laughs Shouldn’t Be
How many times can the characters say “cabbages” in a movie before making you want to throw cabbages at the screen? With “Bubble & Squeak,” writer-director Evan Twohy sets out to answer that question — and little else of relevance to contemporary audiences. Not all movies need to serve up profound insights into the human condition, but the ones that don’t should at least be entertaining, and Twohy’s particular strain of absurdism is not just contrived, but deeply unfunny.
Set in a small, unnamed Slavic nation (most of which appears to have been shot in Estonia), “Bubble & Squeak” begins with a silly premise, with the interrogation (by an eccentrically disfigured Steven Yeun) of a newlywed American couple accused of smuggling cabbages into a country where the vegetables are expressly forbidden. The husband and wife are Declan (“Yesterday” star Himesh Patel) and Delores (Sarah Goldberg of “Barry” fame), a...

Emilia Pérez's Karla Sofía Gascón has just made history, becoming the first openly trans nominee for an acting Academy Award. Gascón has earned a nomination in the Best Actress race for portraying the titular character in Netflix's genre-bending (and divisive) feature. With her historic accomplishment, Gascón joins a limited number of artists: Composer Angela Morley achieved a milestone as the first transgender person to receive Academy Award recognition. She earned nominations for her scores in 1974's The Little Prince and 1978's The Slipper and the Rose: The Story of Cinderella...

Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón has made Oscar history. The titular Emilia Pérez star was just nominated for Best Actress, making her the first openly transgender performer ever nominated in the category. She stars in the musical as a Mexican drug lord who undergoes a gender transition but can’t fully escape her past.
This nomination is historic, but it didn’t come as a surprise. Beginning at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, Gascón and costars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz were jointly named Best Actress. Emilia Pérez was then acquired by Netflix, which released it in theaters on Nov. 1 and on its streaming platform on Nov. 13.
Since then, the film has been enthusiastically embraced by awards groups. It received 10 Golden Globe nominations, the most ever for a comedy or musical, including one for Gascón. It went on to win four of those awards, including the top prize for best film.

Karla Sofía Gascón has become the first openly transgender actor to be nominated for an Academy Award. The Spanish star is recognized for her performance in the titular role of Jacques Audiard’s musical crime film “Emilia Pérez.”
The Netflix film follows Emilia (Gascón), a feared drug lord who seeks the help of a lawyer, Rita (Zoe Saldaña), to fake her death and undergo gender-affirming surgery. Variety‘s chief film critic Peter Debruge praised the Spanish-language film in his review, writing that Gascón “electrifies” in her role.
This isn’t Gascón’s first history-making nod this awards season: She became the first transgender woman to win the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival and was the first trans woman nominated for film acting at the Golden Globes.
Only three openly trans people have been nominated in any categories at the Oscars before: composer Angela Morley, musician Anohni and documentarian Yance Ford.

Jonathan Kimble Simmons, aka J.K. Simmons, is the Academy Award-winning actor who first came to fame as a song-and-dance man on Broadway. He then segued to a celebrated career in television and finally began an illustrious film career that has endured for 30+ years.
Simmons was a long-time theater actor — he had a memorable turn on the 1992 Tony broadcast in a striped purple suit raising his jazz hands in a number from “Guys and Dolls” — until he made his way to television and stunned audiences as white supremacist inmate Vern Schillinger in the HBO series “Oz.” Hollywood then came calling, making a big splash in the “Spider-Man” films and capping it off by winning the Oscar, the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Award for his chilling performance as a music teacher in “Whiplash.” He has since gone on to join the DC and Marvel universes.

Deadpool & Wolverine is the second highest-grossing movie of 2024, with $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office, but does that mean it should have a chance at an Academy Award? Franchise star, producer, and co-writer Ryan Reynolds thinks so and is making a case for it. As with every movie released in 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine is beginning its "For Your Consideration" campaign ahead of the upcoming 97th Academy Awards, whose nominees will be announced on Jan. 17, 2025.
While speaking with IndieWire, Reynolds explained why he believes Deadpool & Wolverine is worth consideration for an Academy Award, particularly Best Adapted Screenplay. Reynolds believes there is a genre bias against the film, not because it is a superhero movie but as a comedy, which many people dismiss as not being as important as dramatic fiction or that most of the movie was improvised. Yet Reynolds believes the movie's ability to balance both comedy and...

Sabrina Carpenter had the biggest year of her career in 2024, and she further proved herself as one of the biggest stars in music with her recent NPR Tiny Desk concert. Carpenter's 2024 album Short n' Sweet debuted at #1 on Billboard 200 and is nominated for Album of The Year at the 2025 Grammy Awards. The former Disney actress recently concluded the North American leg of her tour, which produced several viral social media moments. From covering songs like Abba's "Mamma Mia" and trying new poses during "Juno" every night, Sabrina Carpenter's tour took social media by storm.
Furthering her star power, the "Espresso" singer released a Netflix Christmas special called A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter. It included performances from Carpenter of songs off her 2023 Christmas EP, Fruitcake, as well as covers of classic Christmas songs like "Last Christmas" featuring Chappell Roan. As the year comes to a close, Carpenter has a lot to prepare for.

Netflix's new holiday action thriller Carry-On, starring Taron Edgerton and Jason Bateman, is currently dominating the site’s movie charts, with critics and viewers alike praising Bateman’s turn as a methodical villain facilitating a terrorist attack. Though he’s known primarily for his comedic roles, Carry-On isn’t the first time Bateman has played an antagonistic role, earning a SAG Award in 2023 and four Emmy nominations for his performance as the money laundering anti-hero Marty Byrde in Ozark. But if you go back further, you'll find Bateman playing a unique — and much more realistic — kind of antagonist in the 2007 coming-of-age film, Juno.

Sabrina Carpenter wants to know if NPR is hiring! The pop star packed her sultry, country-tinged Tiny Desk performance Friday with sweet storytimes of the songs on Short ‘n Sweet as she joked about the radio station’s “working environment.”
“NPR, I’ve been watching this show… everyone says this, whatever. You guys are great! You guys know you’re great!” joked Carpenter, backed by a full band and string ensemble that could barely fit in the minuscule corner cubicle.
