Anime comes in a plethora of different genres and formats to suit every fan’s viewing preferences. From long-running epics spanning hundreds of episodes you can spend months sinking your teeth into to self-contained movies for a relaxing evening, anime has something to offer regardless of how one likes to enjoy their media.
The standard for TV anime is a one or two-cour season – a series that runs for three or six months and has 11-13 or 24-26 episodes. Yet ome anime series break these conventions, condensing their stories into less than 10 episodes. While uncommon, some short anime series feature incredible stories that don’t compromise the quality for the sake of padding the runtime. Perfect for binging all at once, these short anime series don’t waste their viewers’ time and tell stellar stories that are concise yet potent.

Now that J Balvin has made his mark in Japanese animation, after starring in Crunchyroll’s hit anime series “Solo Leveling,” TheWrap thought it’d be a good idea to list all the Hollywood stars who’ve also lent their voices to the genre.

Welcome, readers, to Late to the Party , a column that's right on time when it comes to catching up on anime everyone's already watched. This column addresses a universal truth in regard to being an anime fan: an anime backlog is quite the powerful beast. Many of us have one, where we amass more and more content we have designated in the "planning to watch" category. How and why it takes so long to actually address this task varies from person to person, but the gratification of finally allocating the time is really quite splendid. Occasionally, it’s by watching a classic anime from yesteryear that you’ve had your eye on for quite some time. In other instances, it’s a more recent premiere that just slipped by. I wanted to ease my way into 2025 by kicking things off with an anime that is both compact and acclaimed. What...

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse director Peter Ramsey is swinging across genres to bring his storytelling chops to a pair of anime. Japanese powerhouse Gonzo K.K. and N Lite Media (Hair Love) will partner up alongside Ramsey, who has signed on as executive producer and co-writer for two ambitious projects -- a noir thriller called Ripper and a space-fantasy adventure series titled Hotaru.
Per Variety, Ripper, set in post-wwii Japan, will follow two detectives hunting a serial killer targeting women. Created by N Lites Samantha Inoue Harte, Paul Alvarado-Dykstra (Death Note) and Rafael Antonio Ruiz (Green Ghost and the Masters of the Stone), the film is set to be a "deeply personal" entry into Ramsey's filmography. On the other hand, Hotaru, the second project on the anime slate, could be Ripper's tonal opposite. Anime swordsmen are always some of the most popular characters, as seeing someone who has gone through extensive training and practice to hone their skills and bring their techniques to perfection is not only impressive but also inspiring. Often wielding nothing but a sword, these characters can take on any challenge. No matter how intimidating their foes may seem, they rarely refuse a chance to practice.
Even in the realm of sword fighting, there are plenty of different fighting styles and techniques that can be employed. Some swordsmen may prefer to focus on quick and unexpected strikes, while others may wield oversized swords and overpower their enemies through raw strength. Whether they use a single sword or multiple, great swordsmen know how to adapt to any situation and overcome any obstacle. This list presents anime swordsmen not based on their raw destructive power but on their actual skills in wielding their weapon.

Kentaro Miura narrates an epic tale of adventure and revenge filled with intense action and a gripping story, captivating several fans with Guts’ journey. Following a tragic backstory to his path of vengeance, Guts’ struggle is an admirable one. Berserk is an incredibly violent and gory seinen genre masterpiece, that I can assure is not for the faint of heart.

While I do believe that the sexual violence can be a little excessive to the point where it can be uncomfortable for newcomers, diving into Berserk‘s mature themes reveals why it’s a top manga recommendation, including mine. We’re not going to mince words here. Star Wars Outlaws is not looking good. However, if Ubisoft had used Takashi Okazaki’s style for the whole game, maybe we’d be more forgiving.
The creator of Afro Samurai created an admittedly great-looking Kay Vess, Nd-5, and Nix. Considering the controversy surrounding the upcoming game’s visuals, this is a nice departure.

One of the most intriguing manga and anime properties ever has been Afro Samurai. It detailed the story of Afro, an orphan who was consumed by revenge after the death of his father, Rokutaro. In time, Afro turned into a weapon and tried to cut a bloody path to the people responsible for the man's murder.
However, Afro began losing his soul in this war the very thing Rokutaro didn't want him to do. Interestingly, the manga was tweaked after the initial anime to create Afro Samurai: Resurrection. This continued Afro's journey, but as he kept walking this bloody path, he made more monsters and caused a lot more collateral damage along the way.

One of the most unexpected sensations of 2024, Ninja Kamui is an anime original that took fans of explosive action by storm, swiftly earning its reputation as one of the most exciting releases of the year. Directed by Sunghoo Park, famed for his immaculate work on such high-budget spectacles as Jujutsu Kaisen and God of High School, Ninja Kamui presents audiences with a violent, bleak, and endlessly gripping tale of vengeance.
Following a retired assassin, Joe Higan, the series thrusts its hero into a gruesome revenge plot after he loses his family and the last chance at a peaceful life to his former employers, now determined to punish those responsible for his misery. A riveting spectacle of unprecedented visual flare and emotional suspense, Ninja Kamui resembles an unorthodox mix of Hollywoods best vicious blockbusters and ultra-violent action anime. Ninja Kamui takes the idea of ninja technology to a whole new level, integrating futuristic tech with classic ninja themes. Unlike Boruto, Ninja Kamui fully embraces technology as part of the story, making it an essential part of the DNA of the series. Park's visionary choice to blend technology with physical and supernatural abilities in Ninja Kamui has captivated modern viewers.
One of the gifts Boruto has bestowed on the shinobi anime genre is the idea of "ninja tech", and while the idea has appeared in other ninja-based anime, few have tapped into the promise of a technologically enhanced shinobi more than the new hit series Ninja Kamui. Adult Swim's new hit series is a mesmerizing tour de force of ninjutsu and tech that advances what Boruto pioneered to the next level.

John Cena loves classic anime like Fist of the North Star, but he's not a fan of newer anime. Samuel L. Jackson produces anime like Afro Samurai and promotes the medium whenever he can – he's also notorious in the community for his unique taste. Ariana Grande is a die-hard fan of Spirited Away and even has tattoos of the main character, Chihiro.
Many people have grown up watching anime, and celebrities are no exception. At a time when anime was increasing its popularity around the world, many fell in love with it through trailblazers like Spirited Away and Dragon Ball Z.
It's an amazing feeling to learn that a celebrity takes part in a community as vast as anime and manga. With the medium now more popular than ever, it should not come as a shock when more and more personalities come out and profess their love for anime.

Although there is an abundance of animes revolving around the disciplines and complex themes of ninjutsu set across various settings or time periods, the mystique associated with the genre always finds a steady fanbase among viewers with each new venture. Therefore, a couple of years ago, when it was announced that the creative minds behind the anime adaptations of Jujutsu Kaisen, Afro Samurai, and Batman Ninja were collaborating to create an original Shinobi-themed anime series for Adult Swim, titled Ninja Kamui, it was received as a welcome surprise by otaku worldwide.
After the release of the pilot episode of Ninja Kamui this weekend, viewers found themselves hooked on the series almost instantly, as the tried and tested method of the Shinobi theme perfectly complementing the emotional core of a story has worked out pretty well. Anime is more popular than ever. The accessibility of streaming and simulcasting make it easier than ever to be up to date with new shows as they air in Japan. Likewise, there are many big celebrities being open about their admiration for the medium and how they pull inspiration from it, raising awareness to even bigger crowds. Artists like Megan Thee Stallion and Jamie Lee Curtis talked about their love for anime, Samuel L Jackson produced "Afro Samurai" and even Michael B. Jordan directly referenced anime when making "Creed 3."
And yet, it is arguably "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" that makes it official: anime is mainstream now. While filmmakers like Jordan Peele have long drawn inspiration from anime, we haven't really seen a project from a franchise as well-known as "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" not only reference an anime show but actually make it a part of the plot -- until now.

Sometimes, even the best of anime can't escape the cringe trope of whitewashing the entire cast. Fortunately, the anime community has enjoyed its fair share of diversified characters, especially Black characters.
Stereotyping is a long-standing issue that is diminishing as time passes, but luckily, fans have been blessed with some amazing Black characters over the years. These Black characters are not only show-stealers, but they might be the only thing keeping some of these shows together.

In the world of anime, it's pretty common for a series to have one season of 10 to 15 episodes, far from a hindrance though, some of the best anime are 15 episodes or less. These brief series are usually, although not always, complete by the end of their run. Since the investment risk in a 12 episode series is so much lower than a 22 to 26 episode series, these shorter anime can often be a little weirder, venturing into territory that longer anime may be afraid to embrace. These also tend to be based on more obscure manga, or alternatively are anime-original series with no source material at all.
Some of the best anime series with 15 episodes or less span genres, and some have much less than 15 episodes, so it's a bit difficult to compare them to each other. Still, these series had to be good enough to stand out among a crowded market.

The classic anime art style has become almost universally recognized as the popularity of anime and manga has grown over the years. While there is obviously a lot of variation within the realm of "typical" anime style, even that can't account for the art styles at work in some anime. A few of them, fans might not even recognize as anime until a closer inspection.
This list contains ten series that are well outside the "standard" anime style. Some are beautiful, evocative of classical paintings or watercolor masterpieces, and others are meant to be deliberately unattractive. Some are designed to resemble Western animation, while others embrace a wild new art style that's unlike either Western or Eastern animation. Since they're all so different, these aren't ranked in any particular order. They may or may not be to one's personal liking, but rest assured--each one is utterly unique in its look.

When he's asked to help a sick little girl get to a doctor, he soon finds himself called on to fight once again.

I remember when I became the showrunner of my first live-action series, “Supah Ninjas,” I thought I had arrived.
Somehow, against all odds, this show I created with my partner Eric S. Garcia was shooting on the Paramount lot. On the same stage as “Family Ties.” I was officially a part of Hollywood history. When I set foot on stage, I was surprisingly whisked away by an A.D. “Surely,” I thought, “I was being taken to my fancy director’s chair that would make a killer humble-post on my socials.” But instead, I found myself in the holding area with the extras. I learned two things that day. I did not look like someone’s idea of a showrunner. And the holding area is hard to leave.

Exclusive: The Asian and Asian American community in the country has had a rough couple of weeks. One could also argue they have had a rough couple of years — or even decades — since the first Asian set foot on the soil of America. Nonetheless, now is the time for authentic, humanizing representation of Asian and Asian Americans to bolster community morale and to bring light to a time when things seem so dark.
The Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (Cape) and major industry partners have launched the ninth annual Cape New Writers Fellowship, the premier non-studio professional development program that trains emerging writers to succeed in Hollywood. The fellowship boasts multiple showrunners and graduates that have been staffed on over 50 shows across all major network, cable, and streaming platforms.
Led by top industry writers, producers, agents and executives, the Fellowship was co-founded and is co-chaired by Steve Tao and Leo Chu. The sessions include master classes, panels, and workshops, as well as writing labs, in which Fellows revise their scripts under one-on-one mentorship with high-level industry professionals.
This year’s mentors and speakers include Monica Macer, Melinda Hsu Taylor, Sunil Nayar, Teresa Hsiao, Alexander Woo, Albert Kim, Tanuj Chopra, Kyle Harimoto, Jason Ning, Vicky Luu, Cherry Chevapravatdumrong, Nazrin Choudhury, and April Shih, who has the special distinction of being the first alumni of the Cape Fellowship to return as a mentor.
“For the past 30 years, Cape has fought to break barriers in entertainment for our stories to be heard because we all know racism is not new,” said Michelle K. Sugihara, Cape Executive Director. “Dehumanizing tropes in media such as the Yellow Peril, Perpetual Foreigner, and Model Minority leads directly to physical violence against us in the real world, which is why this is more than a representation issue, it’s a social justice issue.”
The participants of the 2021 Cape New Writers Fellowship are:

He was a screenwriting fellow for Sundance, imagineNATIVE, LA Skins, and ‘Ohina Labs. After studying film at the University of California, Santa Barbara, he began his entertainment career working for Anonymous Content and HBO. Since then he has been a writers’ assistant for television shows on ABC, NBC and FX. Darek is currently a researcher on FX’s Impeachment: American Crime Story. Jane Yubin Kim is a Korean American writer and performer based in Los Angeles. After graduating from Ucsb where she studied film, she worked in post production and regularly performed and wrote comedy at the Upright Citizens’ Brigade, where she was a Ucb Diversity scholarship recipient. After graduating from the fellowship, the participants join a distinguished roster of alumni including Bo Yeon Kim & Erika Lippoldt (Star Trek: Section 31), Lauren Moon, Julie Wong (Grey’s Anatomy), Brian Shin (The Good Doctor), Eileen Shim (House of the Dragon), Kevin Lau, Helen Shang, Lisa Bao (Nancy Drew), Aaron Ho (Fresh Off the Boat), Tania Lotia (Witcher: Blood Origin), Nikhil Jayaram (Shades of Blue), Marisa Tam (L.A.’s Finest), Franklin jin Rho (Pachinko), Allyssa Lee (Charmed), Teresa Huang (MacGyver), Thomas Wong (Good Trouble), Jeremy Hsu (Jimmy Kimmel: Live!), Ken Kobayashi (Hit Monkey), Chris Wu (Man in High Castle), Joanne Lee (Coop and Cami Ask the World), Gabriel Ho (Clarice), Andrew N.
Bryson Chun is a Hawaiian filmmaker who has produced films that have screened for PBS, The Smithsonian Museum, The Criterion Collection, and festivals worldwide. He was a screenwriting fellow for Sundance, imagineNATIVE, LA Skins, and ‘Ohina Labs. Most recently, he was selected for The Blacklist’s Inaugural Indigenous List, which spotlights some of the best Indigenous film and television writers working within the U.S. Darek Cioch is a Korean and Polish American writer from Seattle. She is repped by Authentic. Kyle Kubo & Fatima Liaqat are a comedy writing duo/life duo who first collaborated at BuzzFeed writing and producing viral videos. Kyle is biracial Japanese/white, Fatima is a queer, disabled Pakistani, and together they have a passion for writing comedy scripts that blend with other genres from musicals to sci-fi to horror and historical fiction. Their work has placed in Austin Film Festival and the WeScreenplay Diverse Voices competition and has been showcased at Ucb theater stage, Vice, Vanity Fair, Bustle, Thrillist and more. Olive Song is a Chinese-American writer from the suburbs of Georgia. After surviving homelessness, foster care, and a professional figure skating career, they moved on to earn an Mfa in screenwriting from USC. A part-time YouTube binger and a full-time storyteller, Olive has worked with both the Sundance Institute and Participant Media and is currently a Showrunner’s Assistant for an upcoming hour-long TV drama. Vinita Mehta & Richard Nguyen were raised by immigrants, and went on to study psychology at Columbia and Harvard, respectively. Their writing is informed by shared experiences in TV news and documentary production, providing psychotherapy, and D&i consulting. Their screenplays have been a Cinequest Top Ten Finalist, Humanitas New Voices Finalist, and Tracking Board’s Top 100 Pilots and Winner of the Mentorship Prize. Not exactly a film as much as a prolonged music video, which actually accompanies Sturgill Simpson’s homonymous album, “Sound and Fury” manages, nevertheless, to be quite impressive as a spectacle.
The anime consists of various, mostly dystopian stories, including one of a scavenger of mementos from the street and another where a number of colored people are hunted by forces of evil as they try to survive. However, the one that truly steals the show is the initial one, which actually appears a number of times through the film.
In this case, two quite stylish villains in suits, one who uses poison and one a gun, attack a Buddhist monastery where they kill a number of monks brutally. A bit later, another individual who wears a futuristic samurai suit attacks the two men who seem to have become lords of some sorts, in a rather impressive action sequence that...

Let us see if that is actually the case.

1. “The Politician” (available September 27)
Why Should I Watch? It’s Ryan Murphy’s first original series for Netflix. That’s the narrative TV enthusiasts and industry titans will be watching, more so than any high school election shenanigans, when “The Politician” debuts this month. After signing a whopping $300 million overall deal in February 2018, Murphy is rolling out his first big-ticket Netflix series, and his deal (along with more than few others) is meant to help maintain subscribers as the O.G. streaming giant faces new competition from the likes of Disney+ and Apple TV+. The size of its audience is even more important than whether or not it’s any good, but awards prospects are top of mind for this star-studded venture. During his time at FX, Murphy served as an enticing dual threat: prestige and popularity. Now, he’s got to carry that over to Netflix.
Bonus Reason: Well, the cast is pretty stacked.

John Carpenter is taking his Hollywood horror sensibilities to Gotham City, with DC Comics’ recent announcement that the director of The Thing, Halloween, and The Fog is co-writing a special 40-page Joker comic book.
Carpenter isn’t the only Hollywood notable dabbling in the comic book world — far from it, in fact, he’s actually part of a crush of celebrity tourists who are putting their names on comics. The allure for some is the IP creation opportunities, while others hope to tap into the evolving medium’s new indie-spirited cachet. For some it’s a purer pursuit, a low-cost way to produce a pet project or a nostalgic lark that reconnects them with comics traditions and characters they loved in their own youth.
