The Cannes

This quiet and intelligent film is a remarkable interpretation of a young monk's perspective into a world of meditation, sacred geometry, and coming of age. A tribute to Buddhism, introspection and the wonders of nature.

Serge Bourguignon, a few years before "Sundays and Cybele", presents a story of Buddhist monks, and provides some interesting framing with the monk, branch and tree, as well as just a brief glimpse of a world few of us will ever experience directly. Where this was filmed is unclear, but seems to be not far from Vietnam, a world Bourguignon would return to.

The music, from Georges Delerue, is quite distinct and will strike viewers immediately. Delerue may not be a well-known name, but even American audiences have probably heard his work in such films as "Platoon" (1986) and "Twins" (1988).
