Homer Simpson is a simple man. Sure, he loves his family, but beyond that, all he really needs to survive is beer, food and football. Over 36 seasons and nearly 800 episodes of The Simpsons, Homer has taken part in just about every sport ever — including the utterly ridiculous game of lacrosse — but the one he comes back to the most is football.
From entire pigskin-themed episodes like “Lisa the Greek,” “Sunday, Cruddy Sunday” and “Bart Star” to throwaway jokes while Homer watches TV, there have been hundreds of Simpsons gags about the NFL and football in general. That’s why, for Super Bowl Lix — which means 59, I checked — I enlisted a variety of Simpsons Facebook Groups and a few superfans to assemble the list below of 59 hilarious football moments from The Simpsons.

After a delay, Family Guy is finally returning, with Season 23 premiering on Sunday Feb. 16, 2025. It will debut at 8 pm Et / Pt, which has long been The Simpsons' time slot, per TheWrap. Rounding out the two-hour block will be Grimsburg Season 2, The Great North Season 5, and Krapopolis Season 2.
The new episode will be a riff on Top Gun, with Peter playing Maverick as he mourns the death of Goose (Joe). His relationship with Charlie (Lois) is explored along with his son, Rooster (Chris). Given Family Guy's winning record with spoofs on beloved movies, expect this one to be a classic.
The show recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, despite being canceled twice since its series premiere on Jan. 31, 1999.
When Does 'The Simpsons' Return?
Just a few weeks back, it was reported that The Simpsons would lose its coveted Sundays at 8 pm Et / Pt time slot, and would be moved to Wednesday nights.

Everyone knows it's been a long time since "The Simpsons" was good. The golden age of this unbelievably long-running series is a distant memory at this point, and enough has been said about the show's lack of quality in the modern age that I'll just leave it there. What's interesting is that now and then we get signs of life from the body of this animated series, which otherwise seemed to have long since flatlined. In 2023, for example, this very site proclaimed that "The Simpsons" is still good after seasons 33 and 34 suggested the quality was improving somewhat. Now, we have "The Simpsons: O C'mon All Ye Faithful," a Christmas special that celebrates the show's 35th anniversary and does so well enough to have gone over nicely with fans and, according to the Disney+ charts, streaming audiences in general.

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for The Simpsons season 36's special “O C’Mon All Ye Faithful."
Although it has been 24 years since the episode originally aired, The Simpsons season 36’s Christmas special managed to fix one of the show’s biggest mistakes ever with its Flanders storyline. The Simpsons rarely kills off characters, as the show usually only does so when there is a behind-the-scenes justification for this. One of The Simpsons season 36’s big changes to the show’s status quo is its increasingly high body count but, even then, the show has only killed off two minor characters in its first 11 episodes. This still represents a huge change from its usual approach.

The following contains spoilers for The Simpsons season 36 holiday special, "O C'Mon All Ye Faithful," now streaming on Disney+The Simpsons' new holiday special is the best Ned Flanders story in years, and a powerful exploration of faith. The Simpsons has always been at its best when it juggles genuine emotion and goofy comedy. Those core elements are both on display in "O C'mon All Ye Faithful," which balances Homer's newfound ability to inspire hope as Santa juxtaposed by Ned Flanders' deeply somber crisis of faith. Ned has been a fixture of The Simpsons the early seasons, gradually evolving into one of the show's more deceptively nuanced characters.
Ned usually has his faith to fall back on, which makes his deeply personal crisis in the latest Christmas episode of The Simpsons all the more impactful. While the special does restore Ned's faith by the end, it's only through some...

"The Simpsons" is still good, you guys. Sure, it may no longer be the most innovative, influential show on TV, but it is still doing some experimenting like it used to. Recent seasons have given us plenty of entertaining, fresh, hilarious, poignant episodes that feel not like echoes of the Golden Era of "The Simpsons," but rather a new, modern Golden Era. In the last couple of years, we've had horror episodes outside of "Treehouse of Horror," a Thanksgiving horror anthology, actually dramatic episodes, and more. But arguably the biggest experiment "The Simpsons" has done in recent years came in 2021, when a season 33 episode parodied one of the best crime TV shows of modern times, and prestige TV in general.
The episode is "A Serious Flanders," a two-parter episode telling a non-canon story clearly inspired by Noah Hawley's "Fargo" TV show. In the episode, Flanders finds a duffel bag...

Is there a character in the long cast list of The Simpsons more unremarkable yet totally endearing than Lenny Leonard? The Simpsons is jam-packed with supporting characters, and each could host their own The Simpsons spinoff show. Everyone has their favorite character. When I first began getting interested in The Simpsons, I asked for a new DVD box set almost every Christmas and birthday for years, winding up with about eight seasons of the classic show. I studied these background characters, grew to love them, and probably unknowingly, ranked them constantly against each other.
Like a lot of people, one of my first loves in The Simpsons was Mr. Burns. How could you hate a man with a Richard Simmons guard robot? Over the years, your tastes morph and change. You start to enjoy different things for different reasons. Natural Light used to be the pinnacle of beer for me.

The Simpsons started as an animated skit on The Tracey Ullman show and then debuted as its own series in 1989. 35 seasons later, it is the longest-running American animated series, sitcom, and scripted prime-time show of all time. While the first season was a little rough in terms of animation and tone, many of the beloved characters, tropes, and themes were firmly established.
There are, however, some major differences between what the show was and what it became, so going back to watch those early episodes can seem pretty bizarre. None of the Springfieldians had fully developed their madcap personalities yet, and the humor was more subtle, with dark undertones. Also, some mighty weird moments in the first season of The Simpsons defy any rational explanation.

The new Homer Simpson hedge Chia Pet is sure to be the hottest holiday gift of Christmas 1994!

What’s the difference between a Springfield phone book and an elderly high school English teacher’s obituary?
When it comes to that of Simpsons creator Matt Groening’s late mother, the answer is “not a whole lot.”
On Sunday, a copy of Margaret Groening’s 2013 obit began making the rounds on The Simpsons subreddit, where fans found themselves fascinated with not only the cartoon matriarch’s rich life, but the slew of very familiar — and familial — names filling the page.

Another classic character from The Simpsons was recently killed off in the Season 36 episode, "The Yellow Lotus." As a spoof of HBO's The White Lotus, the episode needed to kill off a Simpsons character, so the show's producers chose someone who hadn't been seen on the animated series in nearly three decades.
The episode brings back Nick Callahan, a realtor who was first introduced in the Season 9 episode, "Realty Bites," in 1997. Though memorable for fans of classic Simpsons, the character is very minor, as he hasn't made any additional appearances in the 27 years since the episode aired. In "The Yellow Lotus," Nick finally returned to the series just to get killed off in the same episode. Speaking about the character's fate in an interview with Screen Rant, producer and writer Al Jean explains why Nick was the one who was chosen.

Set in 1914, amidst the early months of World War I, The Last Front takes us to a lesser-known period of history. Director Julien Hayet-Kerknawi brings us to Flanders, Belgium, to witness the horrific “Rape of Belgium” as invading German forces unleash violence upon innocent civilians.
We follow farmer Leonard Lambert and his family, whose quiet lives are shattered with the arrival of the brutal Lieutenant Laurentz and his regiment. Though not a large production, Hayet-Kerknawi’s debut feature aims high. With its focus on ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances, the film spotlights a tragic chapter that has faded from memory.
While an imperfect work, strong central performances help elevate the dramatic tale. Iain Glen and up-and-coming actress Sasha Luss anchor the film with grounded and feeling portrayals of parents fighting to protect their children from the ravages of war.

"Futurama" takes a lot after creator Matt Groening's previous series — a little series you may have heard of called "The Simpsons" — but the main casts of both don't quite line up with each other. After all, "The Simpsons" is about a nuclear family, while "Futurama" is about a group of coworkers. These different comedy settings is one reason why the creators of "Futurama" and "The Simpsons" don't feel they're in competition with each other.
For instance, as the main character of "Futurama," shouldn't Philip J. Fry be the equivalent of Homer Simpson? While both men are lovable and reckless idiots, Groening doesn't think so. Rather, he thinks that Fry's robot best friend, Bender — the lovable scamp (read: sociopath) — is the Homer of "Futurama."
During a 2013 LA Times interview (when "Futurama" was wrapping up its time at Comedy Central), he said, "I think [Bender is] our Homer character — Fry's a little too wimpy.

What if crisis-whammies Nordic drama producers would now tap into other European stories instead of staying in the Nordic bubble and self-sufficient eco-system of mixed national and regional private and public coin? Would it be payback time for European partners who until now have bought into the Nordic Noir, without some form of reciprocity?
The question was raised by Belgium producer Helen Perquy from Banijay Benelux’s Jonnydepony at this week’s Göteborg TV Drama Vision, at a panel which looked into the current Nordic drama production mayhem and possible solutions.
“In Belgium, we do have soft money, tax shelters, Vaf [Flanders Audiovisual Fund], Screen Flanders but you guys in the Nordics have had way more money from broadcasters and global streamers, while we’ve had to be creative [with our financing],” said Perquy.
“For years we’ve watched your series and films, they’ve been up there,” noted the producer, raising her arm up in the air.

"The Simpsons" stopped being a TV show decades ago. It's an institution now. Everyone with even a shred of pop culture literacy can name the core members of the titular family, and millions of others can rattle off a couple dozen residents of Springfield. These characters and their world somehow feel like they've always been around, almost like animation and comedy never actually existed until they did. Generations who grew up in a world where this show was always on, always airing, always available, may not instantly recognize just how much "The Simpsons" shifted television on its axis, but they're living in a world defined by the series' sense of humor, its blend of biting satire, slapstick, and sentiment.
And so it's come to this: /Film decided it was time to select the 25 best episodes of the series. Considering that there are 760 episodes to choose from, this was ... a challenge.

The relationship between Homer and Ned on The Simpsons has evolved, with Flanders becoming a more devout and cautious character. Despite their differences, Homer and Ned have a contentious relationship but are capable of working together when facing real stakes, as seen in the Christmas episode "Skinner's Sense of Snow." Previous attempts to pair up Homer and Ned failed because they required the characters to act out of character, but this Christmas episode succeeded by allowing them to stay true to themselves while working together.
Although The Simpsons needed 12 seasons to get Homer and Ned’s dynamic right, one festive Christmas episode proved the duo had potential. The relationship between Homer Simpson and Ned Flanders hasn't been consistent throughout the history of the show. Ned started as a comically perfect neighbor, and the central gag behind his character was that he made Homer look worse in comparison. As the animated sitcom continued,...

MK2 Films has acquired a collection of films and TV series directed by Bruno Dumont, the award-winning French director behind “Life of Jesus” and “Humanity.”
The acquisition, unveiled during Mipcom Cannes, covers the bulk of the director’s work, spanning eight films and TV series including “Li’l Quinquin,” which premiered at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. MK2 Films will represent rights to some of these titles, in France and/or international markets, apart from a few titles like “Slack Bay” whose global rights are still handled by Memento International.
“Bruno Dumont is, of course, a major figure of contemporary cinema,” said Nathanaël Karmitz, MK2’s chairman of the executive board. Karmitz praised Dumont for the “originality of his unusual, unpredictable [films], veering from gravitas to some unnerving, comedic tangents.” He continued, “Iconoclastic and consistently courageous in its form, his work perfectly represents the free and ambitious cinema that we are proud to promote.
