Marion Cotillard Set for Bertrand Mandico’s Italian Cinema Homage ‘Roma Elastica’ to Be Shot at Cinecittà
Image
Marion Cotillard is set to star in French director Bertrand Mandico’s “Roma Elastica,” a homage to the glory days of Italian cinema that will soon shoot at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios.

The Oscar-winning star of “La Vie en Rose,” and more recently “The Ice Tower” – whose other standout roles titles include “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Inception” – will be appearing in “Roma Elastica” alongside Noémie Merlant (“The Innocent”) and Maurizio Lombardi (“The New Pope”), according to the website of Italy’s promotional film body Filmitalia. Rounding out the “Roma Elastica” cast are vintage Cinema Italiano icons Ornella Muti and Franco Nero (“Django”).

Mandico is an eclectic cult director known for a gender-bending body of work that comprises his debut feature “The Wild Boys,” about five wealthy adolescent boys sent to a tropical island, all played by actresses, which premiered in Venice and topped Cahiers du Cinéma’s 2018 list of Top 10 films.

Cannes Film Festival Winners 2025: ‘It Was Just an Accident’ Wins Palme d’Or
Image
Iranian director Jafar Panahi’s triumphant return to the Cannes Film Festival, “It Was Just an Accident,” has won the Palme d’Or as the best film in competition at the festival, the Cannes jury announced on Saturday evening.

Panahi, who spent almost 20 years in prison or under house arrest in Iran for making anti-government films, was allowed to leave the country and go to the festival for the first time in more than two decades with the film, which deals with victims of oppression who abduct a man they believe was their torturer in prison.

“The bracing thing about ‘It Was Just an Accident’ is that it has married Panahi’s wit and humanism with real anger,” said TheWrap’s review.“… In a festival full of fury, this is one of the films that hits hardest and resonates longest.”

The review also suggested that the film, which premiered on Tuesday,...

Cannes Awards: Jafar Panahi Vindicated With Palme d’Or for ‘It Was Just an Accident,’ Marking Sixth Consecutive Cannes Win for Neon
Image
Bringing a turbulent world together through cinema, the 78th Cannes Film Festival closed with its most political moment, as Iranian director Jafar Panahi accepted the Palme d’Or for “It Was Just an Accident,” a film directly inspired by his time in prison.

Filled with equal helpings of absurdist humor and ire, Panahi’s film follows five characters who think they’ve identified the prosecutor who tortured them during their own arrests — but as they were all blindfolded in jail, none can be entirely certain their captive is the same man.

Since Panahi’s first arrest and conviction for “propaganda against the regime” in 2010, the director has continued to make films, even when expressly forbidden from doing so. In 2011, he sent a flash drive to Cannes with his movie, “This Is Not a Film,” and has remained a vocal defender of other directors whose work the government seeks to suppress.

Jafar Panahi Wins Cannes Palme d’Or for ‘It Was Just an Accident’
Image
Dissident Iranian director Jafar Panahi has won the Palme d’Or for best film for It Was Just an Accident at the 78th Cannes international film festival.

Panahi, who just a few years ago was imprisoned in Tehran and under a 20-year travel and work ban, returned triumphantly to Cannes, accepting his award from jury president (and vocal Panahi fan) Juliette Binoche.

Panahi’s film, his first since being released from prison in 2023, is a direct assault on Iran’s authoritarian regime. The thriller follows a former political prisoner who kidnaps a man he believes to be his torturer and then debates with other dissidents whether to kill or forgive him.

The win marks the sixth time in a row a film acquired by Neon for North America has won the Palme d’Or. Tom Quinn’s indie outfit kept its Cannes streak going by picking up It Was Just an Accident earlier this week.

The event, co-hosted by Cannes Film Festival president Iris Knobloch, general delegate Thierry Frémaux and Chopard co-president Caroline Scheufele, brought together jurors, filmmakers and industry figures under a starry Mediterranean sky. Jolie told attendees—including jury president Juliette Binoche, Halle Berry, Jeremy Strong, Leïla Slimani, Alba Rohrwacher, Quentin Tarantino and Carla Bruni—that films carry audiences far beyond their own experiences. “Through international cinema, we enter private moments, we witness lives at stake on distant front lines,” she said. Referencing My Father Shadow, a drama set against the 1993 Nigerian election crisis premiering at the festival, she added, “Any step...

Dwayne Johnson, future Oscar nominee? With ‘The Smashing Machine,’ the box-office draw makes his prestige play
Image
After A24 released the first trailer for The Smashing Machine with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, it didn’t take long for awards pundits and journalists to start speculating about its future as an Oscar player. Truth be told, Johnson has been considered a potential Best Actor nominee for months, with only a still photo of his transformation into UFC fighter Mark Kerr in his war chest.

However, now that The Smashing Machine trailer has arrived, it seems fair, even at this early stage in the calendar, with the movie still months from its debut, to wonder aloud whether Johnson could leap from popcorn star and beloved WWE wrestler to Academy Award nominee.

If it happens, don’t act too surprised, especially since, on paper, The Smashing Machine has a lot in its favor. Based on the documentary of the same name, and written and directed by Benny Safdie, The Smashing Machine...

Julie Christie movies: 20 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Julie Christie is an Oscar-winning actress who has been largely absent from movie screens this century, enjoying a semi-retirement that finds her returning for the odd performance here and there. Yet she's always finding new fans as younger generations discover her cinematic classics. Let's take a look at 20 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Born on April 14, 1940, Christie rose to prominence for her work in London, starting with a breakthrough performance in John Schlesinger's "Billy Liar" (1963). She won the Oscar as Best Actress just two years later for Schlesinger's "Darling" (1965), playing a fashion model who sleeps her way to the top. That same year, she shot to stardom thanks to David Lean's romantic epic "Doctor Zhivago" (1965), which casts her as a political activist's wife who falls in love with a physician (Omar Sharif) during the Russian Revolution.

She earned a second Best Actress nomination for Robert Altman...

How playing Ronnie Spector could earn Zendaya her first Oscar nomination
Image
As it turns out, Zendaya would never let go of playing Ronnie Spector. Five years after it was announced that the Emmy Award-winning Euphoria star would embody the Ronettes lead singer in a feature film, Deadline reported on Wednesday that the A24 project had secured a new director in Oscar winner Barry Jenkins. Dave Kajganich, a frequent Luca Guadagnino collaborator, is now writing the screenplay after Pulitzer Prize winner Jackie Sibblies Drury was initially mentioned as a possible screenwriter in 2020 when the project was first announced.

Deadline offered no timeline for the Spector film, but it’s safe to assume it’ll be a while. Jenkins was recently attached to direct a science-fiction movie for Universal with Glen Powell in a lead role. At the same time, Zendaya is seemingly constantly busy and now filming Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. However, whenever the project comes to fruition and lands an actual release date,...

Zoe Saldaña Now Shares a Little-Known Piece of Oscar History With Roberto Benigni
Image
With her Oscar win for the Spanish-language “Emilia Pérez,” Zoe Saldaña joins a short list of performers who have won for non-English language roles. She’s just the third ever to do so for Best Supporting Actress, after Penélope Cruz for “Vicky Christina Barcelona” and Yuh-jung Youn in “Minari.”

But there is further significance in Saldaña’s victory. While several actors have won for non-English roles in American movies, such as Cruz and Youn, Saldaña is the first acting winner from a Best International Feature Oscar nominee in 25 years – since Roberto Benigni exuberantly won Best Actor for 1998’s “Life is Beautiful.” Both that film and “Emilia Pérez” were also Best Picture nominees.

In Oscar history, in fact, Saldaña and Benigni are the only two actors to win for movies also nominated in the international cateorgy, which was referred to as Best Foreign-Language Film in the era when “Life is Beautiful” won the award.

14 Oscar Nominated Movies That Are Truly Awful
Image
Oscar nominated movies go through meticulous discussions and careful considerations before becoming a candidate to win the actual award. But sometimes public opinion does not necessarily align with the experts. The audience does not shy away from expressing their opinions—especially when they do not like a movie.

But that doesn’t mean these films aren’t worth watching, they’re entertaining. However, if we start handing out nominations to every entertaining movie, the Academy Awards would lose their value, wouldn’t they? In some cases, these films even overshadowed more deserving contenders, fueling criticism about the very selection process of movie nomination.

In this list, we will look at some of the most controversial and surprising movies nominated for an Academy Award. Without further ado, let’s find out if the movies selected were justified or not.

The Penguin Star Cristin Milioti Auditioned To Play A Key Wicked Character
Image
You might know Cristin Milioti from her knock-down, drag-out performance as Sofia Falcone (turned Gigante) in the HBO original miniseries "The Penguin" — but did you know that she also auditioned for one of the biggest movies of 2024? If you weren't aware of that until right now, I'll forgive you ... because Milioti did not book the role.

In a conversation with Deadline on the red carpet ahead of the SAG Awards — which took place in Los Angeles on February 22 and where Milioti was nominated for her role in "The Penguin" but lost out to "Baby Reindeer" breakout Jessica Gunning — Milioti was asked about the fact that she apparently auditioned for "Wicked." Not only that, but Milioti was quite candid about the whole thing. "I did a really bad job," the acclaimed actress confessed.

"How could you possibly be bad?" the interviewer asked — and so, Milioti answered honestly. "Well, there was a...

Berlin Film Festival: ‘The Ice Tower’ Star Marion Cotillard Shares She Was “Intimidated By Young Co-Star”
Image
Marion Cotillard shared that, while she plays the enigmatic Cristina in her film The Ice Tower (‘La Tour de Grace’), she found herself intimidated by her young co-star Clara Pacini as the pair prepared to work on the movie.

Cotillard, who won an Oscar in 2008 for her role of Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose, said at the Berlinale Film Festival:

“We met at my place and I realised I didn’t dare to look her straight in the eyes, I felt very uncomfortable. I felt intimidated by Clara, she is very charismatic. That was the start of our work together, [that connection] already existed between us.”

Discussing her preparation for the role of actress Cristina, she said: “I invented stories, rivalries with actors, failures and flops. I invented her decline, in a sense.”

She added: “Repeatedly, I play mysterious figures, so I want to see that mystery for myself. I...

This Award-Winning French Film Is an Overlooked Masterpiece of Historical Drama
Image
While Édith Piaf’s name probably won’t ring many bells for English-speaking audiences, her musical works are a staple of French culture. “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien” is a ubiquitous backtrack for any commercial that wants to exude its product’s sense of refined elegance and luxury. In 2023, K-pop’s Yeong Taek Seo covered her iconic “Padam, Padam.” Perhaps more relevantly, Celine Dion belted out her “Hymne à L’Amour” at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony.

Considering all that influence, it’s only natural for the late Piaf to have some biopics under her belt. Of these films, one of the most famous debuted in 2007. Olivier Dahan’s La Vie en Rose (known as La Môme in French) takes its title from one of Piaf’s most famous songs. Predictably, it covers the singer’s tumultuous life and premature death. The quintessentially French film is nothing short of a masterpiece,...

The Many Worlds of Marion Cotillard
Image
Is there any star working today with a career as varied as Marion Cotillard? Anyone who has moved as effortlessly between Hollywood blockbusters — Inception, Dark Knight, Public Enemies — and indies (The Immigrant and Macbeth), from slapstick action comedy like the Taxi films — the French pre-Fast and the Furious car racing franchise that first made her a star — to auteur dramas like Rust and Bone, Annette, and Two Days, One Night?

“I just read scripts and, no matter the genre, if it’s a comedy or a drama, when I feel I can bring something to the movie, that’s when I choose to be part of it,” Cotillard says, speaking via Zoom from her home in Paris. “I don’t plan anything [but] I feel very lucky that I can go between totally different worlds.”

The world Cotillard enters in The Ice Tower, which has its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival on Feb.

How The Dark Knight Rises Star Marion Cotillard Feels About Her Controversial Death Scene
Image
Since Tim Burton's "Batman" arrived in 1989, there's been no shortage of just plain silly moments throughout the franchise's run. The introduction of the bat-nipples in "Batman Forever," George Clooney's Dark Knight whipping out the Bat credit card, anything Arnold Schwarzenegger's Mr. Freeze did in "Batman & Robin." Following that 1997 blunder, however, Christopher Nolan took over the property, giving Batman a new origin story and single-handedly introducing the concept of the "gritty reboot" into the popular lexicon.

2005's "Batman Begins" was an impressively fresh take on a character that had already been reinterpreted multiple times, both on-screen and in the comics. It introduced us to what was dubbed a "grounded" Batman, situating the hero in a Gotham that felt much closer to our own world than any Bat-movie before it. It was a hero's origin tale that Nolan quickly followed up with the Bat-equivalent of "Heat," placing Christian Bale...

France’s Pan-European Newen Studios Rebrands To Studio TF1 & Unveils Cinema Expansion Plans
Image
French film and TV production and distribution group Newen Studios is rebranding as Studio TF1 and expanding its cinema activities, the company’s managing director Pierre Branco has announced.

Former Warner Bros Discovery exec Pierre Branco, who took the reins at Newen Studios last April, detailed the upcoming changes at the TF1 Group subsidiary in an interview with Le Figaro newspaper on Monday.

Branco said the name change went hand in hand with a desire to become more active on the international stage.

Why Timothée Chalamet and Angelina Jolie could sing their way to Golden Globe wins
Image
What do the Golden Globes love more than a juicy dramatic performance? A juicy dramatic performance that sings.

From Austin Butler to Renée Zellweger, the Globes have long rewarded actors not known for their musical abilities who decided to show off their chops on screen in biopics. This year, that historical trend could boost the chances of two nominees: Timothée Chalamet for Best Film Drama Actor in A Complete Unknown and Angelina Jolie for Best Film Drama Actress in Maria.

In A Complete Unknown, Chalamet plays Bob Dylan. The film follows the legendary singer-songwriter from January 1961, when he moves from Minnesota to New York City, to his 1965 concert at the Newport Folk Festival, where he notoriously introduces electric instruments. Chalamet does all of his own singing in the film, refusing to lip-synch along to Dylan’s original recordings. As of today, the actor ranks second with 4/1 odds.

In Maria, Jolie plays Maria Callas.

‘A Complete Unknown’ reviews: Timothée Chalamet is ‘hypnotic,’ but does the rest of the film rise to his level?
Image
The Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown” opens on Christmas, but critics are already weighing in on the film, which follows the folk singer-songwriter from the early days of his career to his infamous use of electric instruments at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. Is the reception for the film friendlier than it was for Dylan and his electric guitar?

SEEInside ‘A Complete Unknown’: Recreating the 1965 Newport Folk Festival

As of this writing the film has a MetaCritic score of 68 based on 26 reviews counted thus far, including 15 positive reviews, nine somewhat mixed reviews, and two negative reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, which classifies reviews as merely fresh or rotten, the film rates 75% fresh based on 48 reviews. There is no critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes yet.

Peter Bradshaw (The Guardian) gives the film its most effusive praise, saying that “[Timothée] Chalamet is a hypnotic Dylan, performing the tracks himself and fabricating to...

10 Best Biopics About Influential Women
Image
The biopic seems to be one of Hollywood's current obsessions, with inspiring movies telling the true stories of iconic women growing in popularity. This comes as no surprise since they highlight the many achievements and challenges that influential and beloved figures in pop culture have experienced on their journeys to success. Recently, films like Pablo Larraín's Maria starring Angelina Jolie and Sophia Coppola's latest cult classic Priscilla, have done well with critics and at festivals.

As modern Hollywood chooses to tell more female-led stories, biopics have followed suit. Many of them tell inspiring tales, charting the challenges faced by some of history's most notable women. The best biopics are capable of bringing history to life and giving modern audiences a sense of the person beyond their achievements. The best biopics about women give a spotlight to their legacies and also shed light on important issues in society that women still face.

Oscars sing the praises of actors who sing
Image
It’s a good year for the musically inclined. This awards season is full of actors who sing. And that doesn’t just mean the performers who were already known for their vocal chops like musical theater star Cynthia Erivo and pop singer Ariana Grande in “Wicked.” There are a number of singing actors for whom music isn’t their primary claim to fame, like Timothée Chalamet in “A Complete Unknown,” Zoe Saldaña in “Emilia Pérez,” Angelina Jolie in “Maria,” Kingsley Ben-Adir in “Bob Marley: One Love,” and even Saoirse Ronan in “Blitz.” Will those stars get a bump for showing their vocal range in addition to their dramatic range?

Some stars over the last 20 or so years were recognized for expanding their repertoires. Nicole Kidman earned an Oscar nom for the 2001 musical “Moulin Rouge!” — though her co-star Ewan McGregor was snubbed despite also doing his own singing. “Chicago” (2002) earned...

‘Anora’ star Mikey Madison to receive Breakthrough Performance Award at Palm Springs International Film Festival
Image
The 25-year-old star of “Anora” is about to add a Breakthrough Performance Award to her mantel.

Mikey Madison will accept the coveted prize during this year’s Palm Springs International Film Festival — specifically at their awards show on Jan. 3, 2025, at the Palm Springs Convention Center. The film festival itself runs from Jan. 2-13.

Sean Baker‘s “Anora” stars Madison as a Brooklyn stripper who gets married to a Russian oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn) in what’s being dubbed a “modern-day Cinderella story.” The film is currently Gold Derby’s Best Picture frontrunner at the 2025 Oscars, and it received a major boost earlier this year when it claimed the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Prior to “Anora,” Madison appeared in popular projects like “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” (2019), “Scream” (2022), and “Better Things” (2016-22). She currently leads Gold Derby’s Best Actress Oscar odds, where her co-nominees are likely...

Image
The 2024 Creative Arts Emmys has handed out its first night of awards.

The annual two-day event, which takes place the weekend before the Primetime Emmys, is currently in the middle of handing out 99 awards to mostly below-the-line categories. Awards announced on Saturday include honors for variety programming, nonfiction and reality.

Saturday’s big winners included Jim Henson Idea Man, Saturday Night Live, Billy Joel: The 100th — Live at Madison Square Garden, Welcome to Wrexham and The 96th Oscars, which each took home multiple trophies. (Jimmy Kimmel, who won as an EP for The Oscars, joked that the win does not change his mind about not wanting to host again this year). Angela Bassett also landed her first Emmy win (after nine nominations) for narrating Nat Geo docuseries Queens, and The Traitors‘ Alan Cumming broke RuPaul’s record-setting winning streak for reality or competition program host.

How good is Angelina Jolie in ‘Maria’? Critics at Venice Film Festival say …
Image
It was just announced that Pablo Larrain‘s biopic “Maria,” about opera legend Maria Callas (played by Angelina Jolie), was acquired by Netflix for distribution, but it has now screened for journalists. It had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on August 29. How good is it, though? The early reviews are pouring in from the Italian fest.

Based on the first 15 reviews counted by MetaCritic so far, the film has a “generally favorable” rating of 63. Eight of those reviews are classified as positive, while seven are somewhat mixed, though none are outright negative. But on Rotten Tomatoes, which considers reviews only as positive or negative, the film is 87% fresh based on 15 reviews, which means only two of them give the film a thumbs down. That disparity between scores suggests that most reviewers like the film, but some of those thumbs-up ratings might be a little ambivalent.

10 Best Biopics With Great Acting, Ranked
Image
Biopics have remained a popular genre of cinema throughout history, bringing attention to true, important stories of real life people that made an impact in some way. The biopics that inspire the most are the ones that focus in on a particularly impactful point in their lives, or insightfully reframe the narrative. Features like Malcolm X and Lincoln positioned the lens on key political figures, whilst La Vie En Rose and Walk The Line delved into the troubled backstories of famous musicians.

Dancing with the Stars' Jenna Johnson Chmerkovskiy on the stunning Len Goodman tribute and her Emmy nomination
Image
Dancing with the Stars season 33 is almost here and we're sure it's going to be just as magical as last season though there's an element to season 32 that can't be replicated or surpassed. That's the beauty, love, and impact of the Len Goodman tribute choreographed by Jenna Johnson Chmerkovskiy and Valentin Chmerkovskiy.

The stunning waltz set to "Moon River" was so stirring it moved those in the studio audience to tears as well as viewers watching from home. It's no wonder the Pro dancers and husband-and-wife choreography team have been nominated for an Emmy. The nomination is Johnson Chmerkovskiy's first and her work has also been recognized with a nod for Chmerkovskiy and Xochitl Gomez's waltz to "La Vie en Rose" which was a memorable moment from season 32 in its own right.

I had the opportunity to catch up with Johnson Chmerkovskiy to ask the pro dancer and choreographer about her Emmy nom,...

She went on to sell upwards of 250 million records, win six Grammys, perform at the Academy Awards, and record the Oscar-winning love theme from Titanic, “My Heart Will Go On.” In the film, Dion...

Kicking off at 7:30 p.m. local time, it will be the first ever Olympic inauguration to take place on a river and outside of a sports stadium for its entirety.
