Movie Based on Action-Comedy Comic ‘Top Secret Service’ in the Works (Exclusive)
Image
In a preemptive deal, Solipsist Films has taken the film rights to Top Secret Service, an upcoming action-comedy comic book from writer Zack Keller and illustrator Giovanna La Pietra.

The high-concept comic is described as in the spirit of Midnight Run and 48 Hrs., with adding in the political suspense of Air Force One. The goal for the movie is to pair two young actors with an older actor as the President of the United States.

Per the logline, “When an elite kill team assaults a remote Montana ranch, two young Secret Service agents must protect the retired president they were assigned — only to discover he’s the last living link to a decades-old alien contact cover-up and the key to unlocking dangerous extraterrestrial tech the world was never meant to find.”

Keller will write the script, with Solipsist’ Stephen L’Heureux producing. The producer, known for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,...

7 Best Michael Madsen Movie Performances
Image
Often cited as one of the defining “character actors” of the post-’90s wave of crime cinema, Michael Madsen was a truly electrifying performer who had the ability to elevate any project he was in, regardless of its quality or fame. Perhaps the ill-fated remake of the Steve McQueen film “The Getaway” or the James Bond film “Die Another Day” wouldn’t be listed as cinematic classics. Still, Madsen brought a sense of specificity and menace to his performances that made them far more entertaining than they had any right to be.

Although his credits included dozens of B-movies, many of which could be described as “guilty pleasures,” Madsen also appeared in some of the most defining and acclaimed films of their era. While he was best known for his collaborations with Quentin Tarantino, a filmmaker whose love for exploitation thrillers and classic cinema made him an excellent partner, Madsen...

The Dirty Harry Movie Series Has a Secret Finale Most Fans Probably Missed
Image
As far as Clint Eastwood's longtime fans are concerned, Inspector Harry Callahan (better known as "Dirty Harry") is dead. This isn't because the actor's most famous cop character died in his films, but because the series hasn't had a new entry since 1988. Not only did Eastwood himself officially declare that he retired Harry, but The Dead Pool was so bad it killed its franchise.

Officially speaking, the Dirty Harry films never got a proper conclusion. But on an unofficial basis, the series got the swan song fans and the character deserved as recently as 2005. However, none of the films' original cast and crew made this sequel. This is because Dirty Harry's finale is the unconnected comic book film Sin City, which did a better job at giving Harry his last hurrah than his actual final film did.

One of Sin City’s Vignettes Was Written as a Dirty Harry...

Wtf Happened to Sin City: A Dame to Kill For?
Image
In 2005, Robert Rodriguez changed the way we looked at comic book movies forever with Sin City, his picture-perfect adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel series. Such a passion project it was for Rodriguez that he even resigned from the Director’s Guild so he could share directing credit with Miller himself. The movie was a box office success, making $158 million worldwide off a $40 million budget, but more importantly, it gave us a thrillingly unique example of how green-screen technology could be utilized – put simply, you’d never seen a graphic novel come to life quite like this. Naturally, with a wealth of Sin City material still available to them, Rodriguez and Miller would want to make a sequel to their hit movie. And they did, although it took a whole lot longer to come to life than anyone initially expected. Hope you’re ready to travel back to that...

Josh Brolin Shares Darkseid Fan Art Following Reported Dcu Talks
Image
There may be a role yet for Josh Brolin in the DC Universe, following the actor passing on the chance to portray Hal Jordan/Green Lantern late last year. Amid renewed talks between Brolin and DC Studios, the actor has shared a piece of artwork by BossLogic imagining him as the villainous Darkseid.

After trusted scooper Daniel Richtman reported earlier this week that Brolin was still in talks with DC, BossLogic created some artwork that transforms Brolin's Marvel villain, Thanos, into Darkseid, who had previously appeared as the big bad in Zack Snyder's Justice League. "The rumour whispers going around is that [Josh Brolin] is still in talks for something big in the Dcu, Josh and DC have the biggest opportunity to do the funniest thing," BossLogic captioned the post on X and Instagram. Brolin subsequently reposted BossLogic's Darkseid art on his Instagram Story, seemingly confirming that he is still speaking...

Robert Rodriguez Had No Involvement in 'The Faculty's 4K Release
Image
If you were to ask almost anyone who was growing up during the teen horror movie boom of the late '90s, 1998's The Faculty frequently comes up as a favorite. Written by Kevin Williamson, the movie did for sci-fi films what his very own Scream did for the slasher sub-genre. It featured smart characters who were very much aware of the tropes of those movies. While not as financially successful as Scream, The Faculty was a moderate hit and has since become a cult classic.

The movie has had a bare-bones DVD and Blu-ray release in the past, with fans craving more, and that time finally arrived this week with the release of Shout! Factory's 4K Collector's Edition of the film. While it comes with new bonus features for the first time, fans won't see director Robert Rodriguez participating in any of them because he opted not to.

Wednesday season 2 adds Lady Gaga to the cast
Image
Singer/songwriter Lady Gaga didn’t have anything to do with the first season of the hit Netflix Addams Family series Wednesday, but when video clips of Jenna Ortega’s “Goo Goo Muck” dance scene went viral, many fans replaced The Cramps’ song “Goo Goo Muck” with a sped-up version of Lady Gaga’s song “Bloody Mary.” So Wednesday and Lady Gaga have been connected for a while now – and that connection is going to be deepened with the now-in-production season 2, as Deadline reports that Lady Gaga has been added to the cast of the show! Details on the character she’ll be playing have not been revealed.

Wednesday comes to us from Millar Gough Ink, Tim Burton Productions, Toluca Pictures, and MGM Television, and is described as a comedic, supernaturally-infused coming-of-age series that follows the teenage girl’s years as a student at Nevermore Academy, where she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability,...

Aaron Kaufman Dies: Emmy-Nominated ‘Superpower’ Director Was 51
Image
Aaron Kaufman, the Emmy-nominated director behind Superpower, Sean Penn’s Paramount+ documentary about the Ukraine-Russia war, has died at the age of 51.

Deadline confirmed the news with Chad Verdi of Verdi Productions, who financed and executive produced some of Kaufman’s previous and upcoming projects, including Superpower. He died in Las Vegas of an apparent heart attack on Thursday.

Kaufman is perhaps best known for co-helming Superpower alongside Penn, and the effort translated into a News & Documentary Emmy nod in the Outstanding Politics and Government Documentary category. What began as an aim to track Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s rise from popular comedian-actor to a prominent political leader transitioned to a war doc in the aftermath of Russia’s campaign launched in 2022, when Kaufman was on the ground as a filmmaker.

Speaking to the one-year anniversary of the conflict’s beginning at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival, Kaufman said, “It seems...

Aaron Kaufman, who directed the documentary Superpower about the war in Ukraine alongside Sean Penn and was a longtime producing partner of Robert Rodriguez, has died. He was 51.

Kaufman died Thursday in Las Vegas, Verdi Productions President Chad Verdi told The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday. Reports indicated that Kaufman died of an apparent heart attack.

“It’s a very sad time for everyone who loved Aaron,” Verdi wrote in an email to THR. “Aaron passed away Thursday night. He and I spoke by phone about 20 minutes prior to 911 being called. He was in great spirits and was headed to dinner. Life is short and family and friends are everything. I miss him a lot already.”

Kaufman may be best known for the Emmy-nominated documentary, but he also wrote, directed and produced several films, including Machete, Machete Kills, Urge and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. He also executive produced The Greatest,...

Aaron Kaufman, ‘Superpower’ Director, Dies at 51
Image
Aaron Kaufman, a writer, director and producer whose credits include “Superpower” and “Machete Kills,” died on Thursday evening in Las Vegas after suffering an apparent heart attack. He was 51.

Kaufman’s death was confirmed by Chad Verdi, the film financier behind “The Irishman” as well as several of Kaufman’s past and upcoming projects.

The Long Island native, who was Robert Rodriguez’s longtime producing partner, is best known for co-directing with Sean Penn the Emmy-nominated documentary “Superpower,” which traced the political rise of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy. While Penn became the face of the 2023 documentary, it was Kaufman who had been on the ground in Ukraine in February 2022 when the ongoing war with Russia broke out. Kaufman had been in Kyiv in the weeks leading up to Russia’s invasion and had been in the bunker with the Ukrainian leader during the perilous first days of the conflict. (Penn...

Joker: Folie Deux Continues A Bizarre Lady Gaga Movie Trend
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Joker: Folie Deux.

The ending of Joker: Folie Deux continues a surprising and unusual trend that has already been seen in Lady Gaga's two previous major feature film appearances. Lady Gaga was cast in the sequel to Todd Phillips' 2019 smash-hit, Joker, set outside the mainstream DC Universe, in August 2022, revealed to be bringing DC Comics' Harley Quinn to life opposite Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck, a.k.a. Joker. While Joker: Folie Deux has received some criticism, Lady Gaga's performance as Lee Quinzel has been widely praised, adding another entry into her strong filmography.

Lady Gaga is one of the world's most beloved and best-selling music artists, and she has proven her versatility time and again, which has translated brilliantly into her on-screen acting roles. Aside from small appearances in Machete Kills and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Gaga began to...

Joker: Folie Deux Cast & DC Character Guide
Image
Arthur Fleck will return in Joker: Folie Deux, and he will bring with him a whole new ensemble. Todd Phillips's 2019 movie Joker became one of 2019's biggest movies, earning over $1 billion worldwide, with Phoenix's performance as Fleck being particularly well-received. It's certainly a non-traditional DC movie with its lack of superheroes, but it clearly struck a chord with audiences.

Joker tells the tale of professional clown-for-hire Arthur Fleck snapping and inspiring an uprising of Gotham City's downtrodden against the city's elite. Joker: Folie Deux is a stronger film than its predecessor, with a story that takes significant swings throughout. With characters like Harley Quinn and Harvey Dent appearing in Joker: Folie Deux, there is more to latch onto in this sequel, as it is full of fantastic actors and characters.

8 Actors Who Starred In Disappointing Superhero Movies Before Landing Now-Iconic Marvel & DC Roles
Image
Many comic book characters have been brought to the big screen over the years, but there are only so many actors willing to fill those roles.

That's why a few Hollywood stars have ended up playing multiple parts across the Marvel and DC Universes, with at least some of them using the second characters they've played to turn their careers around after those disastrous first attempts.

For example, Ryan Reynolds almost killed his career by playing Green Lantern in the 2011 flop; however, he'd more than made up for that with his role in the Deadpool franchise, with this year's Deadpool & Wolverine now the highest-grossing R-Rated movie of all time.

Today, we're looking at 8 actors who have played comic book characters in poorly received superhero movies, only to later redeem themselves with far more successful performances in movies and TV show that didn't flop with fans, critics, and at the box office.

Jerry Lewis’ Infamous “Holocaust Comedy” Finds New Life in Venice (Kind Of)

“All you have to do,” says author Shawn Levy, who wrote King of Comedy, the definitive Jerry Lewis biography, is to give the plot summary. “If you just tell people: Jerry Lewis wrote, directed and starred in a drama about a clown in a concentration camp leading children into the gas chambers, people say: ‘What? How have I never heard of this movie, how have I never seen it?’ “

You haven’t seen the film, The Day the Clown Cried. No one has. Jerry Lewis shot it in 1972, but it was never released. And it never will be. It is one of the last white whales of lost cinema, like Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Dune or Orson Welles’ The Other Side of the Wind, except Jodorowsky never got to shoot a single frame of his Arrakis epic. And Welles’ opus was eventually finished, 48 years later, thanks to Netflix money. It screened...

The Crow's CinemaScore Has Been Revealed; Director Responds To Backlash From Fans Who "Are Very Active Online"

Lionsgate waited as long as possible before lifting The Crow's review embargo. Seeing as it sits at 21% on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that calls it "dreary and poorly paced," it's not hard to see why.

Now, though, regular moviegoers are chiming in with their thoughts and...well, they're seemingly no better.

The Crow has been awarded a B- CinemaScore, putting it on par with the likes of Dark Phoenix, Hellboy, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Hulk, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Punisher: War Zone.

In some respects, it feels like the odds have been stacked against The Crow from the beginning. The response to news of a reboot was met with largely negative reactions and the trailer received a surprising amount of scorn, particularly for Bill Skarsgard's appearance as Eric.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, director Rupert Sanders responded to some of the backlash.

The Day the Clown Cried: The script for Jerry Lewis’ unreleased Holocaust story gets funded for a potential film release
Image
Deadline has reported that an old jettisoned project by Jerry Lewis may be getting a second chance thanks to a new producer and financier. The iconic comedian reworked a script to The Day the Clown Cried as he directed and starred in the feature in 1972. However, the film would not be released since it would not be completed. According to Deadline, Lewis had disavowed the film and he did his best to make sure it never saw the light of day. Rights issues over the story became complicated. Controversy also surrounded the film due to an outcry over the audacity of Lewis setting a film in the concentration camps involving the deaths of Jewish children at the hands of the Nazis in World War II. Additionally, he was accused of shamelessly using the movie for Oscar bait.

Now, Kia Jam of K. Jam Media has taken to funding the original...

Jam is going back to the original screenplay. He said he has the production financing, and the next step is to secure a filmmaker with the guts to tell a most harrowing story.

James Cameron: The King of Movie Sequels
Image
James Cameron is the master of movie sequels, churning high-quality films like Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Avatar: The Way of Water. Other directors like Robert Rodriguez and Sam Raimi have made successful sequels, but their films don't consistently surpass expectations like Cameron's. Cameron's sequels received critical acclaim, with high ratings and awards recognition, solidifying his status as the undisputed master of movie sequels.

No matter how many directors have dipped their toes into multiple franchises, James Cameron is the only one who's managed to master the meticulous art of movie sequels. And, sure, plenty of film fans may be wondering off the bat: What about Piranha II (1982), his directorial debut? Well, Cameron largely disowns the product today, with some sources even saying that he was fired two weeks into production.

Either way — whether you count Piranha II as a bona fide Cameron feature, or discount it as...

10 Movie Sequels That Should've Been Huge, But Flopped Hard
Image
Many sequels to fantastic movies end up disappointing fans and underperforming at the box office despite having the potential for success. A number of major movie sequels, including Batman & Robin and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, were commercial flops despite being part of successful franchises. Factors such as poor reviews, long gaps between films, and changes in cast can contribute to the failure of a movie sequel to match the quality and success of its predecessor.

Sequels to fantastic movies often turn out to be a disappointment compared to the original, including 10 sequels that could have been huge but ended up flopping badly. It's especially disappointing when a massive film creates a subpar sequel, but it's not always surprising. A lot of the world's biggest movies tell stories that simply aren't meant to have sequels, and when major studios push them through anyway, they are just as...

10 Movie & TV Prequels That Were Also Sequels
Image
Prequel stories have become clever ways to explore characters and help audiences understand their world a little bit better, but some sneaky movie and TV show follow-ups have acted as both prequel and sequel. After all, prequels aren't always exclusively dedicated to the past. Sometimes, prequels also include flash-forwards and tidbits of information that help viewers gain a deeper understanding of the future of these characters.

Some films and TV shows act as prequels and sequels, helping to fully round out a universe and add more context to a story. Prequels have been used to rehabilitate popular characters, continue a franchise after a protagonist dies, and help fans better understand a character's behavior. Audiences have complained that prequels are boring because the element of suspense is removed, but adding sequel elements can keep audiences on their toes.

Hocus Pocus 2

Hocus Pocus 2 acts as a sequel and a prequel to the original 1993 movie.

This Is the Best Rosario Dawson Performance
Image
Rosario Dawson is having one of the best years of her career. In addition to her leading role in Disney’s family fantasy comedy Haunted Mansion, Dawson will be taking on the role of the beloved Star Wars animated character Ahsoka Tano in the highly anticipated The Mandalorian spinoff, Ahsoka. While Star Wars fans are likely hesitant about seeing anyone other than Ashley Eckstein in the now iconic role, Dawson has been one of the most consistently underrated actresses in the industry for some time now. Between tying together the Marvel Netflix universe in Daredevil, bringing a surprising emotional depth to Kevin Smith's “View Askewniverse,” and elevating mediocre comic book movies like Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, Dawson has generally been better than the material she’s been given to work with. This couldn’t be more evident in the case of Danny Boyle’s 2013 heist film Trance,...
