With his decades of work in the movie industry, Richard Linklater brought several coming-of-age movies and shows. Out of the lot, Dazed and Confused would definitely stand the tallest given the huge ensemble it boasted. The film was released in 1993 and featured the likes of Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey, and Renée Zellweger, to name a few.

Mia Hansen-Løve would’ve likely premiered her latest film, Bergman Island, at Cannes Film Festival this year, but with the yearly event canceled due to the pandemic, she’s taking a note from Wes Anderson, and saving the debut of her film to next year, but prepping a new project in the meantime.
Titled Un beau matin (which roughly translates to A Nice Morning), her new film will star quite the quartet of French talent: Léa Seydoux, Pascal Greggory, Nicole Garcia, and Melvil Poupaud. Cineuropa reports that Arte France Cinéma is supporting the film, which marks the director’s eighth and will begin production in the summer of 2021. Check out the synopsis below.
The story centers on Sandra who often visits her father, Georg, who suffers from a neurodegenerative disease. As she and her family set off on a real obstacle course through hospitals and retirement homes to try and...

“I think I oughta say something about that song now,” Don Williams would tell concertgoers between the tunes he’d play while seated on a stool, guitar in hand. “I’ll think of something and say it later.” The joke being that country’s “Gentle Giant” would rarely get around to saying much, preferring instead to let the lyrics, and his warm, blanketing baritone do the talking, with his onstage motion mostly limited to moving effortlessly from one familiar hit to the next. Williams, who died in 2017 at 78, will be...

Don Williams, who died in September 2017, would have turned 80 this Memorial Day. In a remarkable country music career that began in the early Seventies and lasted until his retirement in 2016, Williams was known not only for his warm, resonant voice and his gentle, unassuming nature, but also as one of the world’s most important and popular ambassadors of country music. What is less well-known about the “Gentle Giant,” as he was affectionately nicknamed, are details of Williams’ military career.

Something's rotten in the state of Tennessee. Ashley Judd has accused half-sister Wynonna Judd of placing a tracking device on her car in an effort to spy on her, according to a police report obtained by ABC News. The report, filed last month by Ashley, states that a mechanic in Tennessee discovered a wireless Gps tracking device on a Mini Cooper owned by the Come Early Morning actress. She reportedly "believes the device was placed there by Wynonna." The documents go on to note that the Gps device [...]...

Not unlike Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s rapport with the festival, Sundance has become a place where James Franco/RabbitBandini Productions gets to both test-drive and showcase his creative output. Last year’s fest saw him showcase both Interior. Leather Bar. and kink, and while we fully expect to see the filmmaker there for Bukowski, with Holy Land as a possible outside shot, there potentially might be room in the New Frontier section for an anthology of films that were ultimately “patched” together by Nyu graduate students. Closer to Tar than the previous pair of mentioned titles, shooting on Black Dog, Red Dog began in early 2012 with a tally of ten, mostly inexperienced filmmakers that for at least nine of them had to win a contest to be part of the “larger” project.

Romantic thriller Apart had its world premiere at SXSW earlier this month, and will be playing in competition at the Dallas International Film Festival on April 3 and 5. I interviewed star Josh Danziger and writer/director Aaron Rottinghaus while they were in Austin to promote the movie (read my review for more details).
But before I get into my conversation with Rottinghaus, allow me to take a moment to share what actress Joey Lauren Adams had to say, when I spent a few minutes chatting with her. Adams (Chasing Amy) hired Rottinghaus as an editor on her writing/directorial debut Come Early Morning, which Austin Film Festival in 2006 after a Sundance premiere earlier that year.
"In the process of editing [Come Early Morning], we became friends and he went above in beyond in helping me with my project," Adams told me. So she returned the favor to take a small but significant role in Apart.

Director Aaron Rottinghaus and actor Josh Danziger’s thriller, Apart, premiered at SXSW to great reviews. The film is about two people who are linked emotionally and psychology through a shared experience and rare disorder called Icd-10 F24. The story, which Danziger came up with, is based on actual case studies of the disorder.
The film, which also stars Bruce McGill and Joey Lauren Adams, looks beautiful and for a first time director, Rottinghaus has got to be estatic with what he put on screen.
The two friends sat down with me at SXSW to talk about how they wrote the script, how the first draft came in at more than 200 pages, the casting of the film and their advice to filmmakers and actors.

In Come Early Morning Ashley Judd plays a southern woman who loves beer, bars and meaningless sex. But in her brokenness there are glimpses of personal redemption and that's what makes this story interesting. With its fairly small cast, including Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice) and Laura Prepon (That 70s Show) it offers strong performances wrapped in Tim Orr's well-crafted cinematography.
If I had to place it Come Early Morning belongs on the shelf (or queue) next to Crazy Heart, Rachel Getting Married and Trucker.
Available on Netflix.

This father of two is a man who has a lot to say about mothers. Rodrigo Garcia’s new film, Mother and Child, released two days just before Mother’s Day, tells the story of three controlling women who are affected by the responsibility of motherhood in positive and negative ways. This limited release movie does not show so much the “Child” as it does the “Mother,” and it explores a woman’s maternal importance in unique ways.
Allen’s review of Mother and Child will be posted May 21.
I sat down with Mr. Garcia at The Peninsula hotel in Chicago to discuss the influences behind his unique story, and also to figure out what research he undertook in order to bring these three extraordinary yet fictional women to life (played by Annette Bening, Kerry Washington, and Naomi Watts).
(There are spoilers in this interview.)

Though Ashley Judd has found critical acclaim in two recent little-seen indies, it seems those microbudget movies aren't the ones that pay the bills. The Bug and Come Early Morning star-- yes, and all those awful Morgan Freeman movies-- will take what's bound to be a thankless role as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's girlfriend in The Tooth Fairy, an upcoming family comedy from Fox. Variety says Judd's role will be as a single mother with two kids, so I imagine we're bound to see the Rock's transformation from a tough and boorish hockey player to a real family man. I mean, it's a formula that's worked for pretty much all of Johnson's family comedies, so why switch things up now? Judd's fans often bemoan the fact that she hasn't snagged better roles in Hollywood, despite a family in show business and any number of what could have been big breaks.

Judd Doing "Good" After Depression
Hollywood star Ashley Judd has praised her husband for helping her to overcome a bout of depression earlier this year. The Kiss The Girls actress checked into the Shades Of Hope Treatment Centre in Buffalo Gap, Texas in February while suffering from depression and an eating disorder, and completed a 47-day program to aid her recovery. She's now confident she's beaten the illness, saying, "I have so many more tools now. My self-care is really good." And she thanks her husband, racing driver Dario Franchitti, for standing by her during the treatment: "He is so supportive in just the right way. Pitch-perfect." The actress will next be seen onscreen in Come Early Morning.

With all the voices in Hollywood, it's hard to stand out. But when you hear the squeaky, typically quiet voice of Joey Lauren Adams, you immediately know who you are talking to. The actress from "Chasing Amy" and "Dazed & Confused" has decided to put a pause on acting and focus her attention behind the camera. Adams has written and directed "Come Early Morning" (due November 10). I had a chance to sit down with Adams at the James Hotel and discuss the process of making the film that started more than seven years ago. It stars Ashley Judd as Lucy, a woman who goes through the motions of life and love. Lucy has the responsibility of taking care of her grandparents, dealing with her estranged father and losing track of...

ComingSoon.net reports that actress Ashely Judd has optioned Robin Morgan's novel The Burning Time with plans to adapt the screenplay herself. Judd told reporters at a New York press conference, "I'm going to give it a go and probably reach out to other people who are writers to godmother or mentor me through the process." The book tells the story of an Irish noblewoman who was marked as a heretic and threatened to be burned alive at the stake during the time of the Inquisition because she refused to allow the Catholic Church to tell her and her people what to do. Judd plans on writing the script this winter, and there's no word yet if she might appear in the film. She currently stars in Come Early Morning, an indie romancer directed by Joey Lauren Adams.

Judd Narrowly Avoids Bus Fire
Actress Ashley Judd narrowly avoided death after her luxury bus was destroyed by a fire, while she was shooting a movie scene on Monday. The Hollywood beauty spent hours in the vehicle resting, eating and rehearsing lines for independent movie Come Early Morning. But fortunately, she had left the bus to film a scene when it burst into flames, after a crew member left an unattended candle in the vehicle. Nobody was hurt, but damage to the bus - which was parked outside Los Angeles' Hollywood Country Club - came to a staggering $500,000.
