Adult Swim has released all kinds of shows over the years, ranging from classic shows like Rick and Morty and Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, to questionable projects that were better as concepts. While critics’ ratings can tell a lot about how a project is going to be received by mainstream viewers, they aren’t always the sole determinant of whether a show is good or not

At the same time, some shows just go over well with all audiences. Adult Swim has had several shows like this, being poorly rated by critics but still having impressive storylines. Considering this, here are five shows from the network that deserve more love, even if their ratings are low.

In Panos Cosmatos' psychedelic 2018 heavy-metal horror cult/revenge epic "Mandy," the laconic lumberjack Red (Nicolas Cage) lives in connubial bliss with his beloved girlfriend Mandy (Andrea Riseborough) in a remote cabin way out in the middle of the Oregonian woods. They spend their days listening to music and staring lovingly at one another. Rather suddenly, though, their idyll is interrupted by a local religious cult, led by the drugged-out, sex-crazed Jeremiah Sand (Linus Roach). Jeremiah is convinced that he is an actual messiah after years of taking hallucinogens and seems to have access to legitimately supernatural demonic bikers (who look like trashier versions of the cenobites from "Hellraiser"). Jeremiah kidnaps Mandy and tries to convince her to be one of his concubines. When she laughs at his naked body, Jeremiah gets mad and burns her alive while Red watches. Everything is bleak and bloody and terrible.

A new series is in the works at NBC that will be exciting news for fans of 30 Rock. The network has put in a pilot order for a potential new show that would reunite Tracy Morgan with some members of the 30 Rock team.

Per Deadline, NBC has committed to a pilot for an untitled single-camera comedy series featuring Morgan in the lead role. He's reuniting with 30 Rock co-showrunners Tina Fey and Robert Carlock along with writer Sam Means for the pilot. The story will see Morgan playing a "disgraced former football player who is on a mission to rehabilitate his image." No other cast members have yet been revealed, and it's unclear if Fey will also have an on-screen role. Casting is reportedly underway.

George Lowe, the voice actor and comedian best known for his work as Space Ghost on the cult favorite series Space Ghost Coast to Coast, has died. He was 67.

A rep for Lowe confirmed his death to Rolling Stone. An exact cause of death wasn’t given, but according to a statement shared by Lowe’s family on Wednesday, March 5, Lowe died after facing “challenges” following elective heart surgery.

“George Lowe’s family has been grief stricken and unable to respond regarding his passing, on March 02, 2025, until now,” the statement read.

George Lowe, a veteran voice actor whose credits include the title role in Space Ghost Coast to Coast, died on March 2 at age 67, a spokesperson confirms for TVLine.

Lowe reportedly passed following a long illness, his longtime friend “Marvelous” Marvin Boone shared on Facebook.

Dan Stevens, Maggie Lawson and Natasha Leggero lead the voice cast for animated series The Milk Chug, which released its trailer on Tuesday.

Named after the show’s coffee shop, The Milk Chug follows the playful and hilarious adventures of Blue Cat and his friends, a collection of characters who have procured a global fandom over the past decade. Zeno Robinson (Dragon Ball Super, The Owl House) stars as Blue Cat, with Stevens (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Cuckoo), Leggero (Ugly Americans, Another Period), Maggie Lawson (Psych, Lethal Weapon) and Dana Snyder (Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Squidbillies) rounding out the friends.

Tracy Morgan will star in a new Paramount+ comedy series that is set in the same world as the CBS show “The Neighborhood,” Variety has learned.

The half-hour multi-cam comedy is titled “Crutch.” Morgan stars in the series as Francois “Frank” Crutchfield, or Crutch to those who know him well. The character is described as “a Harlem widower whose empty-nest plans are put on hold after his millennial son and free-spirited daughter move back home.”

“The Neighborhood” star and executive producer Cedric the Entertainer will also executive produce “Crutch,” with CBS Studios producing. Production will begin later this year.

Ballmastrz: 9009 is a high-octane animation that takes place in a post-apocalyptic future.

The removal of Justin Roiland from Rick and Morty may seem to be a major blow to the series, but Rick and Morty has several ways it can explain and integrate new voice actors. Adult Swim announced that it would part ways with Roiland, the series's co-creator and voice of both title characters, after reports of criminal charges for domestic violence surfaced and were followed by additional allegations of sexual misconduct. Given the seriousness of the allegations, Roiland's removal was undoubtedly justified, but it raises the question of whether there's any point doing Rick and Morty without the voice of Rick and Morty.

The Last O.G. is proof that you should never underestimate a good show or a good man. That’s because Tuesday’s Season 4 finale was packed with tenderness, twists, food, realness and heartbreak.

The TBS comedy’s finale opened up with an excited Tray presenting a tasty tasting menu to Josh, Amira and Shahzad in preparation for their graduation dinner. It included fried bologna and cheese sliders, fried chicken, macaroni balls and some kind of dessert loaf that was so decadent, Shahzad lost the feeling in one of his feet.

Adult Swim has found the new voice of Squidbillies‘ Early Cuyler ahead of the show’s final season.

After a competitive search (watch the video below), Tracy Morgan landed the role of the balding hillbilly squid from Georgia over several Adult Swim favorites including George Lowe (the voice of Space Ghost), Spencer Grammer (Rick and Morty‘s Summer), Steve Blum (aka T.O.M. of Toonami) and Squidbillies co-creator Dave Willis.

Morgan replaces actor Stuart D. Baker who was fired from the long-running animated series in August 2020 over “extremely offensive and derogatory social media posts” disparaging entertainer Dolly Parton and Black Lives Matter.

Morgan can currently be seen starring as Tray Barker on TBS’ The Last O.G., now in its fourth season. Morgan also is an executive producer on the show. He’s probably best known for his role as Tracy Jordan in the sitcom 30 Rock (2006–2013), and for his...

Adult Swim’s Squidbillies has set a premiere date for its farewell outing, which will kick off with back-to-back episodes on Sunday, Nov. 7 at midnight. Two episodes will then air every Sunday, leading up to the series finale.

“Tuca & Bertie” has been renewed for Season 3 at Adult Swim.

The show debuted its second season on Adult Swim on June 13. The first season had aired on Netflix, but the streamer canceled the show in 2019. The final two episodes of Season 2 will air on Aug. 8 and Aug. 15 respectively. Adult Swim has also secured the international rights for Seasons 2 and and 3, now making the show available globally via the brand.

Tuca (Tiffany Haddish) and Bertie (Ali Wong) are best friends, and they’re both full of ghosts. Bertie is busy excavating her inner ghouls with the help of a therapist, while Tuca prefers to stuff hers behind the toilet. She’ll deal with them later, right now she’s just too busy trying not to be single anymore. Meanwhile, Speckle (Steven Yeun) is building a new house but soon finds he’s driven to the brink of insanity.

Adult Swim is one of the longest-running purveyors of adult animation and President Michael Ouweleen talked up the medium’s ability to produce new content during Covid.

But the Turner veteran also warned that broadcasters and platforms may face a drop in viewing once the pandemic is over as a result of increased social activity.

“Coming out of this [pandemic], I think it’s going to be the 1920s again and people are going to go off and be out in the world in a very serious way. I think it will be gradual rather than sudden. But we will see a time where we’ve gotten really good at producing animation in all these flexible ways, but we might see a dip in content consumption in the future, once everyone’s safe and we have to be ready for that,” he said during an animation panel session at SXSW.

Mike Tyson Mysteries was one of the most insane, nonsensical series Adult Swim had ever produced. And that's saying a lot for the programming block/network that gave fans Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Squidbillies, and The Eric Andre Show.

In the now canceled eponymous animated series, the former heavyweight champion of the world solved mysteries with his team. That included a ghost, a pigeon with the mind of a human, and his adopted Chinese daughter. Saying they solved mysteries really wasn't true. They mostly just made things worse. A lot worse. But at least they were funny while they did it!

Billy Joe Shaver, the outlaw-country original who wrote classic songs for the likes of Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings and whose “Live Forever” was performed by Robert Duvall in the 2009 Best Picture Oscar nominee Crazy Heart, died today after a stroke in Waco, TX. He was 81. A friend confirmed his death to our sister publication Rolling Stone.

Although Shaver never had much commercial success as a recording artist, he is widely considered among country’s greatest songwriters. All but one of the tracks on Jennings’ 1973 album Honky Tonk Heroes — an early benchmark of the “outlaw country” genre — were written or co-written by Shaver, including its famous title cut. His best-known songs also include “Ain’t No God in Mexico” “I’m Just an Old Chunk of Coal (But I’m Gonna Be a Diamond Some Day),” “Georgia on a Fast Train,” “Tramp on Your Street” and “Try and Try Again.

As August winds down, it’s time to look ahead to everything that’s hitting the major streaming services in September. As always, there’s an enormous haul of originals and newly licensed titles going up across Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Hulu and Prime Video over the month, including content from every genre out there.

The first day of September brings the usual lengthy list of movies arriving on most of the sites. Just a few of the highlights include all three Back to the Future films returning to Netflix, every entry in the Twilight saga arriving on Hulu and countless iconic movies going up on HBO Max, including Grease, Miss Congeniality and V for Vendetta. Also, Doctor Who fans will want to take note, as the most recent season of the show lands on HBO Max the same day.

Highlights include Ridley Scott’s “Raised by Wolves,” out Sept. 3, which follows two androids raising a human child on a distant planet; “Coastal Elites” starring Bette Midler, Kaitlyn Dever, Dan Levy, Sarah Paulson and Issa Rae, out Sept. 12, and “The Murders at White House Farm,” which is out in Sept. but doesn’t yet have an exact premiere date.

Others without a premiere date coming in Sept. include season one of “Haute Dog,” “Mo Willems: Don’t Let the Pigeon Do Storytime!” and seasons one through three of “The Great Pottery Throw Down.”

WarnerMedia’s grand streaming experiment continues apace with HBO Max’s list of new releases for September 2020.

This month, HBO Max is bring some serious dramatic heat with the Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi series Raised by Wolves arriving on Sept. 3. And if science fiction isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, then HBO Max has identified something that is: true crime. The Murders at White House Farm will arrive at a date to be determined in September.

In addition to those intriguing original offerings, HBO Max is making the best of its WarnerMedia library this month. Doctor Who season 12 makes its long-awaited streaming debut on Sept. 1. Also arriving on the first of the month are Clerks, Election, and the hopefully-not-too-timely V for Vendetta.

Recent horror hit The Invisible Man arrives on Sept. 19. It is complemented by HBO Max original comedy Unpregnant on Sept. 10.

Here is everything else coming to HBO Max this month.

A voice actor on Adult Swim’s “Squidbillies” who was fired Sunday for “derogatory” and “offensive” Facebook posts went off on the makers of the cartoon series Tuesday, writing, “I just hope you assholes are happy.”

“Folks, I’ve been fired from my Cartoon Show, lost my endorsements and my chance of ever being booked by any Music Venue as Unknown Hinson again,” wrote Stuart Baker, who goes by the stage name Unknown Hinson and has voiced the character Early Cuyler on “Squidbillies” since 2005, wrote in a since-deleted post, according to TVLine.

“I just hope you a-holes are happy you took a good Man and talent down. You succeeded. Be proud that you ruined a person’s life all because of [the] Freak Show called ‘Dolly Parton and BLM.’ Thanks a lot. I gave my best to you assholes for over 30 years. I guess you just love to kick someone when they’re down.

Squidbillies star Stuart Baker, who voices dad Early Cuyler on the Adult Swim animated comedy, has been fired after posting a number of incendiary statements on Facebook.

Baker, who goes by the stage name Unknown Hinson, called Dolly Parton a “freak titted, old Southern bimbo” and a “slut” after the country singer voiced support for the Black Lives Matter movement, per our sister site Variety. Stuart D. Baker has been fired from the Adult Swim animated series “Squidbillies” after posting comments about Dolly Parton and the Black Lives Matter movement on social media.

Baker, who performs under the name Unknown Hinson, posted on his Facebook profile late last week about Dolly Parton voicing her support for the Black Lives Matter movement. In doing so, he referred to Parton as a “freak titted, old Southern bimbo” and a “slut.” In another post, he wrote “Have Fun [sic] forsaking your own race, culture, and heritage.”

Series creators Jim Fortier and Dave Willis announced Monday via the show’s official Twitter handle that Baker was no longer a part of the show.

Marvel Television’s remaining slate continues to dwindle.

Variety has confirmed that the animated shows “Howard the Duck” and “Tigra & Dazzler” — two of four animated Marvel projects set up at Hulu — are no longer in the works at the streamer. The other two shows, “M.O.D.O.K” and “Hit Monkey,” are currently still on track to be completed. The four shows were to crossover in an event series called “The Offenders,” though that is now off the table given that half the team will not be featured on Hulu as planned.

According to an individual with knowledge of the decision, Marvel ultimately made the call not to move forward with the two shows.

Last week Marvel and Hulu announced that they were producing a number of animated series for Howard the Duck, M.O.D.O.K., Hit-Monkey, and Tigra & Dazzler Show. Those shows would build to a standalone team-up special called The Offenders.

One of the projects that a lot of fans are excited about is Howard The Duck which is being developed Kevin Smith and Dave Willis. Smith recently talked to Marvel.com about the series and you can tell that he’s excited about it:

Hulu and Marvel Television have partnered to produce four adult animated series, Variety has learned.

The shows will be based on the following Marvel characters: Howard the Duck, M.O.D.O.K, Hit-Monkey, and Tigra and Dazzler. Like the Marvel-Netflix “Defenders” shows before them, the four characters will then team up in the animated special “The Offenders.” Marvel’s head of TV, Jeph Loeb, will executive produce each project. Disney–which owns Marvel–will become a majority shareholder in Hulu once the Fox-Disney merger is completed.

“Howard the Duck” will be written and executive produced by Kevin Smith and Dave Willis. Netflix has picked up a second season of its adult animated comedy series Paradise Pd. The renewal comes two months following the premiere of the series about a backwater Southern-fried, small-town police department featuring the voice of Sarah Chalke.
