I can’t really blame anyone for not seeing Drugstore June in theaters, considering that scattered, super-limited run lasted just a few weeks. But now that it’s streaming on Hulu in the US, you can check out one of the least-discussed but funniest mainstream comedies in ages. Built around the standup persona of comedian Esther Povitsky, Drugstore June is very much a throwback to a time when any emerging comic figure might be awarded their own thinly conceived vehicle. It wasn’t a great trend – Drugstore June’s director, Nicholaus Goossen, made Grandma’s Boy, to cite one example among many – yet here, revived absent big-studio attention (or maybe just with extra love for the game), it produces an idiosyncratic townie detective comedy, with sheltered, self-centered, snacks-obsessed June (Povitsky) trying to figure out...

A few days ago, it was announced that Happy Gilmore would be getting a new 4K Blu-ray release from the Kino Lorber video label. The ultra-high-definition transfer of the Adam Sandler comedy is due to hit retailers sometime early next year, presumably to coincide with the release of the Netflix sequel. It has now been announced, per Blu-ray.com, that Sandler’s previous breakout film, Billy Madison, will also be getting a 4K release from Kino Lorber that is scheduled to become available to consumers also early next year.

As Adam Sandler breaks out the clubs to return to the gentleman’s game of golf for the upcoming sequel Happy Gilmore 2, the Blu-ray label Kino Lorber will be bringing the original film to you in glorious 4K imagery. Blu-ray.com has announced the news of the 1996 film’s remastering. Happy Gilmore stars Sandler along with Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Frances Bay, and the late, great Carl Weathers. There has not been a firm release date announced. However, the 4K release is expected to hit retailers sometime early next year. It will likely coincide with the release of Netflix’s sequel.

When you go back and take a look at the movies that were released in 2006, you might think we were all high. I mean some of us were but regardless, everything was so over the top. Eli Roth’s Hostel was tearing off tourists’ clothes while slashing their Achilles’, The Hills Have Eyes remake was gnarly in every way and does anybody remember that really cool but super weird Paul Walker flick Running Scared? We were on some dark stuff back in the mid-2000s. It wasn’t just the horror and action genres, either. Comedies like Grandma’s Boy had a level of wildness to them that you don’t see these days.

Update: It looks like Christopher McDonald was right about Adam Sandler working on the script for Happy Gilmore. Sandler’s fave co-star and longtime pal Drew Barrymore confirmed, in a clip from today’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, that the sequel is indeed happening. “I want it. I need it. And I stayed up last night with my daughter watching Billy Madison,” says Barrymore, adding later, “I’ll just say this, from my source, that it is in process.”

Barrymore famously starred with Sandler in three movies, The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates and Blended. The two have remained close over the years, with Sandman frequently turning up on her show. While he’s mostly focused on drama recently, including the recent Netflix film Spaceman, Happy Gilmore 2 would likely be warmly received by fans, especially if co-stars Christopher McDonald and Julie Bowen return.

With a snappy title and an ensemble cast of comedians and well-known actors, Drugstore June is an original concept with writing that is witty and humorous, but doesn't quite reach the mark of laugh-out-loud comedy.

The film is one of those rare examples of a project with a lot of focus, as opposed to having too many competing visions. It was written by both the main star, Esther Povitsky, and the director/editor, Nicholaus Goossen, whose last (and only) hit film was the 2006 cult comedy Grandma's Boy. Both Povitsky and Goossen knew what they wanted out of this movie, though it could have been executed better.

Starring Esther Povitsky (Dollface) as the titular pharmacy employee, the Nicholaus Goossen-helmed feature tells a hysterical story of an up-and-coming influencer who finds herself immersed in a local crime. Blending a satirical tone with an insane onslaught of recognizable stars, including Miranda Cosgrove (iCarly) and Bill Burr (Leo), the trailer for Drugstore June looks to be another quotable comedic masterpiece from the director who brought audiences Grandma’s Boy.

In August 2023, the Academy Museum celebrated the 100th anniversary of Harold Lloyd's seminal silent comedy Safety Last! Lloyd's granddaughter, Suzanne Lloyd, who plays an integral role in promoting and preserving her grandfather's work, was on hand for the special occasion. The screening featured a live score with a 24-piece orchestra playing Carl Davis' contemporary score.

Along with Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd was one of the foundational figures of silent-era comedy. After starring in dozens of shorts during the 1910s, Lloyd transitioned to making feature-length silent comedies throughout the 1920s. Many of Lloyd's best movies rank among the funniest films ever made.

Lloyd divided his feature-length silent comedies into two distinct categories, "gag pictures" and "character pictures." His "gag pictures" revolved around action set pieces and sight gags, while his "character pictures" revolutionized feature-length comedies through character development and well-written story arcs.

Critics are loving Adam Sandler’s latest comedy.

Netflix premiered the new movie, “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah”, on August 25, and it’s already shot to the top of Sandler’s rankings on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film, about two BFFs who’ve always dreamed of having the most epic bat mitzvahs, was produced by Sandler, and stars the actor alongside daughters Sadie and Sunny, as well as his wife Jackie.

Following its release, the movie has broken the record for Sandler’s top-scoring film on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 96 percent rating.

That beats out “Hustle”, which previously held the record at 93 per cent, and is ahead of “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)” at 92, “Uncut Gems” at 91 and “Punch-Drunk Love” at 77.

Adam Sandler drew raves for his performance in “Uncut Gems,” but his latest Netflix movie, “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah,” has so far gotten even better critics’ reviews, as well as raves for his youngest daughter, Sunny.

As of Monday afternoon, the family comedy, which co-stars his daughters, had a 96% positive ratings from critics, while the 2019 Safdie Brothers drama sits at 91%.

Audiences, at 66% positive, were less gung-ho about the Sammi Cohen-directed comedy, which premiered Aug. 25 on the streamer.

Critics are saying, essentially, “hurrah for nepotism” about Sandler’s daughter Sunny, who stars as Stacy Friedman who clashes with her Bff (Samantha Lorraine) right before their respective bat mitzvahs.

Do you know when the first movie premiere in Hollywood history was held?

On Oct. 18. 1922 Sid Grauman opened his movie palace the Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. with superstar Douglas Fairbank’s latest swashbuckler “Robin Hood.” The red carpet was rolled out for Fairbanks, his wife Mary Pickford and their good friend (and partner in United Artists) Charlie Chaplin. It cost 5 to attend the premiere. And the movie, which was the top box office draw, played there exclusively for several months. The Egyptian cost 800,000 to build and took 18 months to complete for Grauman and real estate developer Charles E. Toberman. It is currently being renovated by Netflix in cooperation with the American Cinematheque.

“Robin Hood,” directed by Allan Dwan, was one of the most expensive movies of the silent era, costing just under 1 million. The castle was the biggest set ever made for a silent movie. Some scenes feature over 1,200 extras.

Spooky Season is in session on Hulu, as the streaming service is adding a ton of horror-themed content this month. But not to worry, there’s plenty of other non-spooky new movies and shows to watch, too.

In the horror realm, director David Bruckner’s new (and well-received) take on “Hellraiser” arrives on Oct. 7, while horror films ranging from “Annabelle: Creation” to “The ABCs of Death” to “Monster House” to “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” arrive throughout the month.

In decidedly non-scary new arrivals, the entire series of “Schitt’s Creek” comes to Hulu on Oct. 3 after streaming on Netflix for the last few years, while the Hulu original film “Rosaline” – which tells the “Romeo and Juliet” story from a different point of view – streams on Oct. 14.

Other noteworthy library titles include Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” on Oct. 25 and David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” on Oct. 31.

When the name of your streaming service so neatly fits into the word “Halloween,” you have a moral imperative to bring the goods come spooky season. Thankfully Hulu is abiding by that obligation with its list of new releases for October 2022.

Halloween…or rather Huluween is set to be a big deal for the streamer. This month sees a bevy of horror offerings. On the TV side of things, the series adaptation of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser premieres on Oct. 7. That will be accompanied by two animated specials from Solar Opposites co-creator Justin Roiland. The first is A Sinister Halloween Scary Opposites Solar Special on Oct. 3, which is followed by The Paloni Show! Halloween Special! on Oct. 17.

Hulu’s original movies are decidedly spooky-centric this month as well. The horror meme movie Grimcutty premieres on Oct. 10 and will be followed by Matriarch on Oct. 21. Of course, many of the library...

WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash hopes Rob Zombie will cast him as Herman Munster in The Munsters, an upcoming movie adaptation based on the classic comedy series. In the original TV show, Herman, a spoof of Frankenstein's monster and the Munster family patriarch, was played by legendary actor Fred Gwynne. Just recently, Zombie shared an image on Instagram revealing the clay sculpt that will be used for the character's forehead, complete with the familiar scar on the side.

Rob Zombie has been rather open with fans about the pre-production process of The Munsters Movie, but he has stopped short of announcing any casting information. There have been names floating around as rumored cast members, but until this news is made official by Zombie or Universal, other actors might be intrigued by the possibility of getting involved. Enter Kevin Nash, who has also sporadically worked as an actor in addition to his pro wrestling career.

Grandma's Boy has gone animated in a new clip shared online by producer, co-writer, and star Allen Covert. Released in 2006, Grandma's Boy was directed by Nicholas Goossen and written by Covert, Barry Wernick, and Nick Swardson. It follows a video game tester and total pothead (Covert) who moves in with his grandmother (Doris Roberts) after he's evicted from his home. It didn't exactly light the box office on fire when it was released, but it's a movie that has garnered a cult following in the years since.

On Monday, Allen Covert posted a video on his Instagram account featuring the return of his character, Alex. An animated short, the clip is just under two minutes long. Of course, it depicts Alex smoking cannabis alongside his pot dealer, Dante, played by Peter Dante in the movie. Heavily inebriated, the two interact with Dante's new Alexa, even somehow sharing a joint with the electronic device.

I did a double take when I saw the headline myself. Despite only launching a week ago, a not inconsiderable number of titles will be leaving HBO Max at the end of June. Logically, distribution contracts that were already running out weren’t going to stop running out just because Warner launched their new service, so you best get on these quick.

Even more sad news is coming in this week as the Emmy and Tony-winning actress Shirley Knight has passed away. Known for her work in movies like The Dark at the Top of the Stairs and Sweet Bird of Youth, Knight was a veteran actress whose impressive performances have stuck with viewers for decades. Reportedly, Knight died on Wednesday due to "natural causes" at the San Marcos, Texas home of her daughter, actress Kaitlin Hopkins.She was 83 years old.

Shirley Knight was born in Goessel, Kansas, on July 5, 1936. Knowing very early in life she wanted to perform, Knight had begun studying to be an opera singer at the age of eleven. After graduating from high school, Knight attended Phillips University and Wichita State University, going on to study at the Pasadena Theatre School to train as an actress. She would make her movie debut in the 1959 movie Five Gates to Hell,...

Shirley Knight, who was twice Oscar nominated for best supporting actress, for “The Dark at the Top of the Stairs” (1960) and “Sweet Bird of Youth” (1962), and won a Tony and three Emmys, died on Wednesday of natural causes in San Marcos, Texas. She was 83.

Her daughter, actress Kaitlin Hopkins, paid tribute to Knight in a lengthy Facebook post.

Knight continued to work as she approached 80, reprising her role as Mom in “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” in 2015 after appearing in the 2009 original.

In 1997’s “As Good as It Gets,” starring Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt, Knight played the mother of Hunt’s character; the New York Times called her performance “tenderly funny.”

'Everybody Loves Raymond' star Doris Roberts has died.

The 90-year-old actress, who also featured in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, passed away on Sunday (April 17).

Doris won five Emmy awards.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Roberts spent 20 years on Broadway before making her mark on the big and small screens in the 1960s.

Her credits also included beloved TV series Angie, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, Remington Steele, and Soap, but she will be forever remembered as Ray Romano's meddling mum in Everybody Loves Raymond.

She portrayed Marie Barone on the TV comedy from 1996 to 2005. She also portrayed the magical Mrs. Miracle in two holiday TV movies.

Her film credits included Grandma's Boy, Keeping Up With the Steins and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.

The actress' son, Michael Canata, confirmed to Deadline that she died in her sleep last night from natural causes. "Doris Roberts had an energy and a spirit that amazed me. She never stopped. Nick Swardson has been making us laugh since he started acting in 1999. With comedies like "Just Go With It," "Blades of Glory," and "Grandma's Boy" under his belt, he's ready to take on horror comedy in his next flick "Hell and Back." If you want to see the new horror film, "Creep," about a videographer who answers an ad on Craigslist and soon finds the assignment is not what it seems, it's available only on Netflix. Writer-director Mark Duplass stars in the film, which is available to stream on July 14.

Ever since his breakout role in 2004's Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Joel David Moore has been entertaining audience with his diverse array of talents that span several genres, from comedy (Grandma's Boy) to horror (Hatchet) to serious dramas (Beyond a Reasonable Doubt) to the biggest movie of all time (Avatar). He has even gone behind the camera to bring us the phenomenal indie Spiral, which he co-directed with Adam Green and he currently stars on the ABC drama series Forever. The actor goes back to his indie horror roots with the thriller Grace: The Possession, currently available on DVD and Digital HD, where he plays Luke, a young priest who helps the title character (Alexia Fast) with her "demons," literally.

I recently had the chance to speak with Joel David Moore about Grace: The Possession, the unique first-person/Pov perspective the film was shot in, future projects and much more.

When Nickelodeon first launched in 1977, it seemed like little more than a child's answer to Saturday Night Live and MTV. Masturbation is still a bit of a taboo subject in our society, but that didn't stop one sex-toy store from marking May as National Masturbation Month in the mid-90s. No joke.

Hollywood seems intent on reviving popular '80s TV shows for the big screen these days, with varying degrees of success. Flicks like The A-Team and Miami Vice fell a bit flat, while ventures like Alvin & the Chipmunks (the first and second movies, anyway) actually lived up to the '80s TV series.

This week's release 21 Jump Street, thankfully, falls into the latter category. The big screen adaptation of the popular '80s cop show starring Johnny Depp is fast-paced, funny and even has a little heart. (And yes, Depp has a great cameo.) Stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum play well off of each other as the sensitive nerd and dumb beefcake, respectively.

What the hell this is, it sounds awesome! Out of left field today via Deadline comes some casting news for an R-rated stop-motion animated comedy called Hell & Back, made by production company ShadowMachine Films. We don't see many of these, which is why there can never before enough of them. Starring, as presumably just their voices, in the lead roles are comedians Nick Swardson (Grandma's Boy, Bolt, Bucky Larson, 30 Minutes or Less) and T.J. Miller (Cloverfield, Unstoppable, Gulliver's Travels, Yogi Bear). Two hilarious guys who should certainly bring plenty of levity to this stop-motion flick, but what is it about? According to the Deadline post, Hell & Back is about two best friends who must rescue their pal when he is accidentally dragged to hell. So it sounds like Swardson and Miller, the two best friends, are dragged through hell and back to get him. This is being made ...

According to Deadline, Nick Swardson ("Reno 911", Grandma's Boy) and Tj Miller (Cloverfield, Get Him to the Greek ) have been cast in ShadowMachine’s R-rated stop-motion animated Hell & Back, a comedy about two best friends who must rescue their pal when he is accidentally dragged to hell.

The film is set to begin shooting in January with Tommy Gianas ("Tenacious D") and Ross Shuman directing; ShadowMachine principals Alexander Bulkley and Corey Campodonico are producing.
