Jonathan Groff would be the first person to win Best Actor in a Musical consecutively
Image
Just in Time star Jonathan Groff in currently in second place in Gold Derby's Tony Awards predictions for Best Actor in a Musical, only behind fellow Glee alum Darren Criss for Maybe Happy Ending. The former triumphed for Merrily We Roll Along just last year, so if he prevails again, he'd be the first individual in history to win this category consecutively.

Prior to Groff, five men were Tony nominated for Best Actor in a Musical two years in a row, but didn't emerge victorious:

Gregory Hines in 1980 for Comin' Uptown and 1981 for Sophisticated Ladies George Hearn in 1983 for A Doll's Life and 1984 for La Cage aux Folles (the latter of which resulted in a win) Patrick Wilson in 2001 for The Full Monty and 2002 for Oklahoma! Michael Cerveris in 2006 for Sweeney Todd and 2007 for LoveMusik Brian d'Arcy James in 2023 for Into the Woods and 2024 for Days of Wine and Roses...

Image
After former Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, attended this year’s Met Gala, online speculation over who paid for the $150,000 tickets has run wild.

On Monday night, Harris and Emhoff appeared at the Met Gala in New York City. She wore a custom black-and-white gown by Off-White. This night marks her first appearance at the Met Gala.

Although the couple skipped the red carpet, the former vice president appeared in photos before the event wearing a silk silhouette with an asymmetrical cape sleeve and a long scarf.

Harris was invited by Vogue editor-in-chief and Met Gala co-chair Anna Wintour, a spokesperson for Harris said.

However, it was not revealed who paid for the tickets, which run $75,000 per person to the annual event, considered the most exclusive party of the year.

Users immediately spread rumors about the mystery on the social media platform X.

Actors’ Equity And The Broadway League Reach Agreement On Thorny Issues Around New Work Development
Image
Actors’ Equity Association has reached a deal with the Broadway League on a new five-year Development Agreement, resolving an eight-month strike prohibiting Equity members’ participation in early stages of development work.

The National Council of Actors’ Equity Association, the labor union representing more than 51,000 professional actors and stage managers in live theatre, announced today that it had voted to ratify a new five-year Development Agreement, concluding an eight-month strike against The Broadway League, the trade organization representing theater producers and owners.

The new agreement is effective immediately and extends to February 11, 2029.

The Development Agreement is used for the development of new works by Broadway League producers, usually prior to an intended Production Contract engagement. The new agreement guarantees a cumulative pay increase of over 8% for Equity members, achieving the union’s top goal for this collective bargaining agreement. Gains also include increased pre-production time for stage managers and the establishment...

La Dictadura Perfecta: Check The First Trailer For Luis Estrada's Latest Political Satire
While Mexican director Luis Estrada and star Damián Alcázar did a couple of films together before, their real partnership began in 1999 with the political satire Herod's Law (La Ley de Herodes). Since then, Estrada has directed only similar films, all starring Alcázar. A Wonderful World (Un Mundo Maravilloso, 2006) depicted the times of Mexican president Vicente Fox, while 2010's El Infierno (aka El Narco) was a take on president Felipe Calderón and the ongoing war against drugs. If you thought of those films as Estrada's sociopolitical trilogy, well, you better think again. La Dictadura Perfecta (the literal translation would be "the perfect dictatorship"), Estrada's new collaboration with Alcázar, is hitting Mexican theaters on October 16 and is going for the same formula. La Dictadura Perfecta is Estrada's...

On TCM: Oscar Winner Colbert
Claudette Colbert movies on Turner Classic Movies: From ‘The Smiling Lieutenant’ to TCM premiere ‘Skylark’ (photo: Claudette Colbert and Maurice Chevalier in ‘The Smiling Lieutenant’) Claudette Colbert, the studio era’s perky, independent-minded — and French-born — "all-American" girlfriend (and later all-American wife and mother), is Turner Classic Movies’ star of the day today, August 18, 2014, as TCM continues with its "Summer Under the Stars" film series. Colbert, a surprise Best Actress Academy Award winner for Frank Capra’s 1934 comedy It Happened One Night, was one Paramount’s biggest box office draws for more than decade and Hollywood’s top-paid female star of 1938, with reported earnings of $426,944 — or about $7.21 million in 2014 dollars. (See also: TCM’s Claudette Colbert day in 2011.) Right now, TCM is showing Ernst Lubitsch’s light (but ultimately bittersweet) romantic comedy-musical The Smiling Lieutenant (1931), a Best Picture Academy Award nominee starring Maurice Chevalier as a French-accented Central European lieutenant in...

Twenty years later he is deported back to Mexico -- presumably due to the increasingly xenophobic immigration policies in the U.S. Upon his return to his hometown, Bennie quickly discovers that a pair of feuding drug lords have taken over the region; his younger brother (Tenoch Huerta) and several of his closest friends have died as a result. Determined to remain on the straight and narrow, Benny begins working at his godfather's garage; but as soon as Benny falls for a gorgeous prostitute (Elizabeth Cervantes) -- the mother...

Movies This Week: How the Straw Lion Drives It
I'm really excited to see that The Happy Poet is playing again in town tonight at Austin Film Society. Presented in part by Texas Independent Film Network and Screen Door Cinema, Paul Gordon's comedic tale brings us a man with a dream, a hot dog stand, and a desire to provide near-vegetarian fare to the world. Heartfelt and funny and filled with local talent, The Happy Poet is one of my favorite movies of recent years, and with the explosion of the food-truck phenomenon, a must-see film. And if you miss the Afs screening, it'll play in San Marcos on Sept. 28.

On Sunday, Cine Las Americas has a free screening of Un Mundo Maravilloso (A Wonderful World) at Takoba. This 2006 satire from Mexico juxtaposes poverty and political ambition -- the Minister of Economy declares the end of poverty just as a homeless drunkard stumbles on the scene.

‘Exit Stage Left’ Raises the Curtain on Theater Comedy
Exit Stage Left is a web series by, for, and about theater people. This is not a knock on the project, just a point that needs to be made. In my day job I deal with a fair number of people whose lives revolve around the stage. They’re driven like any other artists, but nearly all that I’ve befriended have that “theater tick”: everything, even the most banal of scenarios, has to be turned into a dramatic situation. It’s taxing, especially for someone outside the theater world who doesn’t know if/when you’re supposed to call Hamlet ‘The Scottish Play’. Fortunately, though the atmosphere of Exit Stage Left is thick with that sort of constant melodrama, it is the only negative I’ve encountered. And, realistically, such an element should be viewed as necessary. This new series is an account of the fictitious Lowry...
