Shudder has unveiled the trailer and poster for Night of the Reaper, the latest feature from Canadian filmmaker Brandon Christensen. Best known for Still/Born, Z, Superhost and The Puppetman, Christensen once again returns to his fascination with format-driven horror, this time crafting a Halloween-set slasher with an added layer of VHS-inflected menace. The film will launch on the platform on 19 September.
Set in a quiet American suburb in the mid-1980s, the story follows college student Deena, played by Summer H. Howell, who reluctantly agrees to a last-minute babysitting job upon returning home. Freddie Prinze Jr. made a bold claim during the premiere of the I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel. On Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Helen Shivers death scene, he gushed: “I genuinely mean this: I think it’s one of the best death scenes in the history of horror films.” While her actual death scene appears mostly offscreen, behind a wall of rubber tires, I would argue that he likely meant her chase scene. It remains the most heart-pounding and all-time best chase scene in slasher history, outpacing the likes of Laurie Strode in Halloween and Sally Hardesty in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
Chase scenes are as old as movies themselves. The first horror movie, 1896’s The Haunted Castle, features rudimentary scares and mechanics that would later become integral pieces to horror movies of the ‘20s, ‘30s, and ‘40s, from Nosferatu to Dracula and Frankenstein. 1942’s Cat People...

With horror films nothing is off limits. The thing that seems the safest place can bring the biggest terror. Think of the shower scene in Psycho, swimming is such fun, until a shark is munching on your torso. And for all of us, home is our safe place, until it isn’t! Through cinema home invasion horror has terrified audiences. Films like The Last House on the Left, When a Stranger Calls, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle and The Strangers.
In 2024 there was a new home invasion film released called Crumb Catcher. This indie thriller really pushed genre boundaries, delivering a gripping experience. Arrow Video snatched up the rights for this indie darling and have given it a deluxe Blu-ray release that fans of this genre are going to just love.

Women can have everything but a personality in director Simon West’s offensively bland work-life balance comedy, “Bride Hard.” Rebel Wilson stars as an American spy on the hunt for a single redeeming quality in Magenta Light Studios’ wedding party-turned-hostage negotiation. It’s been 13 years since Anna Camp broke out with Wilson in “Pitch Perfect,” and the box office success of that franchise made the actresses’ reunion in a new movie inevitable. Still, they deserve a better match than “Bride Hard.”
The problems start with Shaina Steinberg’s misguided and shallow script. A pale imitation of “Bridesmaids” (which earns its punny association with the Bruce Willis action classic even less), Wilson and Camp’s latest film sets out to answer, “Should these childhood besties stay friends?” Instead, it collapses into an ad-laden sameness that is not only deeply unfunny but recalls the infamous “Game Night” question: “How can that be profitable for Frito Lay?...

Grinderman, the side project of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, have announced they will be reissuing their full discography on July 18th.
The Grinderman lineup is comprised of Cave with fellow Bad Seeds Warren Ellis, Martyn Casey, and Jim Sclavunos. The quartet has released three albums: their self-titled 2007 debut, 2010’s Grinderman 2, and 2012’s Grinderman 2 Rmx. Formed in 2005, Grinderman was created to explore a more raw, primal sound than The Bad Seeds and lean closer to Cave’s earlier post-punk project, The Birthday Party. Their debut album, Grinderman, was universally acclaimed upon its release and spawned the singles “No Pussy Blues” and “Get It On.” Its follow-up, Grinderman 2, took a more psychedelic approach, while Grinderman 2 Rmx featured reinterpretations from artists including Robert Fripp, Josh Homme, Unkle, and Nick Zinner.

Kids are kind of dumb. Remember when you and your friends thought it was funny to prank call the police, not realizing they could see the number and easily call you back? That’s mostly innocuous, but it was also a rite of passage. I’m not sure the adolescent phase of prank calling still endures or not, but since the advent of home telephones, kids and teens loved picking up the phone and pranking friends and foes alike. The entire Scream franchise is basically the most terrifying prank call in history (except it’s no joke).
The phenomenon wasn’t just limited to the 1980s and 1990s, either. Way back in 1965, William Castle directed Joan Crawford in I Saw What You Did, a cheap yet fantastic thriller about two young girls pranking random numbers, calling and saying, “I saw what you did, and I know who you are.” Unfortunately,...

Scream got a lot of mileage out of landline telephones. While the series has been adapting to new technologies with every subsequent entry (Ghostface can text now), nothing ever quite captures the magic of the landline. That silly little phone in your kitchen tethered to the wall, the one with the cord your mom would twirl in her finger while shushing you—she’s on the phone. Scream wasn’t the first horror movie to render pretty familiar tech terrifying, though it arguably did it the best.
When a Stranger Calls is an earlier example, even if its phone call thrills were limited almost exclusively to its pretty sensational cold open (before it all goes downhill). Out of the Dark was a grimy, sexy reinvention, pitting phone sex workers against a crazed serial killer, and of course, The Ring famously dialed in to let you know you had just seven days to live.

Screen Gems is developing a new take on ’90s slasher Urban Legend, and THR reports that Shanrah Wakefield (Killer in Red) will write the script with Gary Dauberman (Until Dawn) producing. Neal Moritz is also in talks to produce, with the reboot in early development.
THR details, “While plot details are unknown, sources say the story aims to be an examination of what an urban legend looks like in a post-digital world.”
In the Jamie Blanks-directed 1998 slasher starring Jared Leto, Alicia Witt, and Rebecca Gayheart, a college student suspects a series of bizarre deaths are connected to urban legends.
The original slasher was followed by two sequels, Urban Legends: Final Cut, released theatrically in 2000, and the direct-to-video film Urban Legends: Bloody Mary in 2005.

The opening of 1979’s When a Stranger Calls features twenty of the most potent minutes in horror. From an unassuming heroine whose tenable performance lingers, to the attentive buildup of suspense ahead of a nightmarish climax, the movie begins on the best note possible. Replicating what feels like lightning in a bottle seemed impossible at the time, but as it happens, Fred Walton’s less familiar sequel When a Stranger Calls Back is a remarkable successor in more ways than one. Walton redefined the same story rather than repeat it. Instead of shifting the focus away from the babysitter like in the first movie, the sequel follows her trauma and never loses sight of it.
Julia (Jill Schoelen) is babysitting a couple’s two children one evening when she receives an unexpected visitor. An unknown man comes to the front door and asks to use the phone because his car has broken down nearby.

Technology and trauma come together once again for Christopher Landon’s latest Blumhouse thriller Drop, a fun and satisfying ride through a first date from hell.
Years after the traumatizing death of her husband, widowed mother Violet (Meghann Fahy) is ready to put herself back out there, accepting a first date with the charming Henry (Brandon Sklenar) after three months of online flirtations. But their romantic evening takes a nightmarish turn when Violet begins receiving anonymous drops on her phone with nefarious memes and instructions, while her son is held hostage at home.
With Landon’s visually striking Hitchcock-ian direction, screenwriters Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach provide a fun tech-driven update on the urban legend that spawned 1979’s When a Stranger Calls (and its fun 2006 remake) as the drops come from inside the house.

With a 25-year career on his shoulders, director Simon West seems to have a knack for helming remakes. He first set out to bring 1979’s When A Stranger Calls to a present-day audience in 2006. Seeing the decent success that it had at the box office, he then aimed to adapt an even more prestigious title from the '70s, Charles Bronson’s The Mechanic. Actor (and all-around tough guy) Jason Statham was announced to be in the lead role soon after the project was initially developed. The film was praised by critics and welcomed by audiences as well when it was released in January 2011.
Seeing how West was on a roll with reboots, he saw it fitting to continue digging deeper into this filmmaking niche. Could he pull off three successful remakes, though? When it came to his modern take on a 1986 neo-noir thriller, Heat (based on a novel of...

The 12-episode K-drama When The Phone Rings kept us on the edge of our seats from start to finish. There’s no denying it was one of the best K-drama viewing experiences of the past year. The series goes from a thriller mystery reminiscent of When A Stranger Calls to a romance drama set in 2013 Dramaworld. I feel like everything from how the lead actress is dressed to the color grading of the show makes it look like a drama that came out 10 years ago and definitely not in 2024. I guess this nostalgic trip kind of pushes us old folks to like it more because it reminds us of what once was. But I digress. Sa-Eon and Hee-Joo are the most unhappy married couple you’ve ever seen. An arranged marriage in the conglomerate world isn’t unusual, but the level of contempt is eyebrow-raising. Hee-Joo is mute because of an accident from years past,...

Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Diplomat season 2, episode 1, "When a Stranger Calls."Netflix's The Diplomat is filled with political terminology that speeds by so quickly that it can be easy to miss, and the season 2 premiere includes one such term without ever really describing it in any detail. With The Diplomat season 2 cast being a blend of British and American characters - among other nationalities - several buzzwords from each country involved can refer to complex political processes. In The Diplomat season 2, episode 1, "When a Stranger Calls," Rory Kinnear's British Prime Minister, Nicol Trowbridge, calls a meeting known as a Cobra - which is a very specific kind of gathering.
The political drama's return picks up immediately following The Diplomat season 1's ending. The show's second run continues to use London as its primary setting, and as such, prominent British politicians like Trowbridge continue to use official words...

The Diplomat season 2 begins immediately after the bombing at the end of the season 1 finale.
The opening scene of “When a Stranger Calls,” The Diplomat season 2 episode 1, reveals the aftermath of the bombing. Ronnie Buckhurst (Jess Chanliau), Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh), and Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) were injured in the bombing, but we don’t know the extent of their injuries.
In Paris, Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) and Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) just realized that it seems like the Brits, possibly including Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear), are the ones responsible for the attack on the British ship before getting the call that there was a bombing in London involving Hal and Stuart.
From the first moments of the season, we know one person has died in the blast, but we don’t know if it’s Ronnie, Hal, or Stuart. We don’t have to wait long to find out.

The blood-thirsty hitchhiker, the escaped psycho with a hook for a hand, the babysitter and the call that is somehow unequivocally coming from inside the house; we all known them. The modern day fables that have shaped our fears and behaviours arguably more than any others. Urban legends that all seem to have sprung out of the American post-war hangover of the 1950s and ’60s, as inequality took seed and the dark side of the new white-picket-fence suburbia slowly set in off-screen. Ed Gein and Ted Bundy and the Moors Murders filled the news. Doubts about our fellow man, and about what they’re capable of. About how we very much aren’t “all in this together”; that the days of blindly trusting one another are all but over. That people, strangers in particular, are more likely to be dangerous than helpful.
And naturally, those cautionary tales bled into culture and filmmaking.

Before USA Network became series-focused, the cable channel delivered a steady stream of weekly original movies. Many of which were produced by McA (now NBCUniversal). And during this era — between the late 1980s and early 2000s — USA offered a variety of genres; action and suspense were the most common, but horror also came up from time to time.
Especially around Halloween.
USA Network is no longer in the business of airing these “World Premiere Movies,” horror or otherwise, and there haven’t been great strides to bring all of them to streaming or modern home video. However, the horror entries certainly have their merits as well as fans.
See if you can remember these original movies from USA Network’s horror history.

Zombie outbreak plots have elevated in status due to pop culture sensations like The Walking Dead and The Last of Us. These apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic narratives have fascinated viewers since George A. Ramero's classic Night of the Living Dead, evolving to appeal to new generations that yearn for a fresh twist and unique concept with each new show and film.
Despite the outliers that have revolutionized and popularized the zombie genre, most zombie flicks are not positively reviewed by critics and viewers. However, these storylines offer some interesting themes, including the exploration of humankind, survival, companionship, and the fragile state of civilization. The Terrifier franchise is known for featuring some of the most gruesome kills ever seen on camera, but according to director Damien Leone, if the Hollywood system had its way, the movies would be a lot less bloody in order to appeal to a wider audience. Speaking with Total Film ahead of the release of Terrifier 3 next month, Leone revealed that due to the overwhelming success of his first two independent films, he was approached by a major studio about the possibility of rebooting the franchise to bring it to the masses. However, it came with one big caveat that wouldve compromised his vision for the series.
They wanted to reboot it for a wider audience. Thats not what I was interested in. They would say, 'Its gotta be rated R, it cant be as gory as you made it.'

The second season of the new series is titled Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, and it has been announced that it’s set to make its Max premiere on May 9th!
This take on the Pretty Little Liars concept was created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring. It focuses on “new characters in the new fictional town of Millwood, Pa and with multiple references to iconic horror movies (think Carrie and the original Halloween).” Season 1 had the following synopsis: Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped...

The first twenty minutes of the 1979 horror film When a Stranger Calls (watch it Here) really creeped out movie-goers. It stuck in their heads, earning the movie cult classic status. The rest of the running time, viewers don’t often remember so clearly. So when Screen Gems gave the greenlight to a remake, they decided to expand those first twenty minutes to feature length, stretching out the thrills and suspense for as long as possible. It was a clever idea that was brought to the screen in an entertaining way. And if you haven’t seen the When a Stranger Calls remake, this is the best horror movie you never saw. (You can watch that one Here.)

It’s been a number of years since we’ve heard from Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody of “Juno” fame, but she’s written the new horror-comedy “Lisa Frankenstein,” which stars Kathryn Newton (“Big Little Lies”) as Lisa, a young woman who falls in love with a corpse, played by Cole Sprouse (“Riverdale”), and decides to try to bring him back to life. Directed by Zelda Williams – the daughter of the late, great Robin Williams – the movie is fully targeted toward the younger female audiences that have made musicals like “Wonka” and “Mean Girls” decent-sized box office hits,...

Delays are bound to happen when making movies, but something was clearly wrong when Amusement was postponed not once but twice in 2008. It wasn’t long before John Simpson’s American directorial debut was removed from the theatrical schedule altogether and then later dropped on DVD that following year. Although going from the big-screen to direct-to-video is an undeserved fate in some cases, this movie’s new destination was understandable. The unfavorable feedback from an early test screening — the word “disastrous” was tossed around — forced Warner Bros to salvage the potential flop now on its hands. Nevertheless, the negative consensus hasn’t stopped Amusement from amassing a small fan base over the years; its followers focus on this panned movie’s few merits rather than its many shortcomings.
At first, Amusement looks to be an anthology; this horror movie’s first three acts are well defined and almost function as standalone short features.

Well, that remains unclear, but this time around the anthology series will follow detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) as the long winter darkness in Alaska. When eight people at the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace, these detectives need to get on the case quickly.
