Keke Palmer's new comedy movie debuts with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score. Since beginning her career as a child actress, Palmer has proven her versatility in both comedy and drama, appearing in Barbershop 2: Back in Business and The Wool Cap, both in 2004. However, her breakthrough came with a standout performance in the drama Akeelah and the Bee in 2006, and her career progressed with roles in Madea's Family Reunion, the Disney Channel original movie Jump In!, The Longshots, and Shrink.
However, Palmer rose to further prominence on television, starring as the titular character in the Nickelodeon sitcom True Jackson, VP from 2008 to 2011. She later transitioned into more mainstream horror on television, starring in Fox's satirical series Scream Queens and MTV's slasher series Scream. The 6888th battalion might very well “represent the best of America,” but filmmaker Tyler Perry’s The Six Triple Eight is still disappointing the critics. And, unfortunately, the results perpetuate Perry's poor scoring on Rotten Tomatoes, as the historical war drama currently registers only 49% on the Tomatometer against 35 reviews.
However, it’s not unusual for Perry’s movies to be glossed over. In fact, many of Perry’s most popular titles, including Madea Goes to Jail (29%), Madea’s Family Reunion (26%), and Meet the Browns (33%) all landed terrible reviews (per Rt), even though the fans adored them. So, it’s not that much of a surprise to see his newest Netflix flick being panned. 2024 has been particularly harsh for the filmmaker, with Mea Culpa registering only 18% on the Tomatometer, and then there is Divorce in the Black’s unprecedented 0% Rt score —zero! Universal has been vindicated, thanks to the witches of Oz and the tenacity of studio chief and top NBCUniversal executive Donna Langley.
Over the Nov. 22-24 weekend, director Jon M. Chu‘s Wicked opened to an estimated $114 million domestically, the biggest box office launch of all time for a Broadway adaptation in a landslide victory, considering that the previous record holder, Into the Woods, opened to $31 million, not adjusted for inflation.
Moreover, it’s the fourth-biggest domestic opening among any musical behind three marquee Disney titles.
It couldn’t be a more welcome result for Universal, which was left badly bruised when Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper’s Cats adaptation turned into a box office debacle in 2019. The movie opened to just $6.6 million before topping out at $25.2 million domestically and $75.6 million globally. Langley and her team, however, remained steadfast in sticking with making two Wicked movies (Chu’s sequel debuts a year from now).

Over the past 19 years, Tyler Perry has been gracing our screens portraying the role of Madea Simmons, with the role originating in the 2005 comedy, Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Now, Netflix subscribers have the chance to watch the original movie anytime they like as it's being added to the popular streaming site. Although there are 12 movies in the so-called '"Madea Collection", with another on the way, Perry never could have imagined the popularity Diary of a Mad Black Woman would enjoy, even now, with the film being added to Netflix's streaming catalog, allowing it to reach a wider audience than ever before.
Diary of a Mad Black Woman represents the start of an incredibly successful multimedia franchise. The enduring popularity of the Madea character is demonstrated by the number of movies, plays, and TV series in which she has featured. As a result, understanding the character's origins through...

Divorce in the Black is a critical disaster with a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes, a record low for Tyler Perry's career. Perry's audience scores often disagree with critics, but even general audiences found Divorce disappointing with a 54% score. Despite Perry's success with Madea movies, Divorce in the Black marks his lowest outing yet in terms of critical reception.
Tyler Perry's Divorce in the Black has made a splash on Rotten Tomatoes, but it is hardly the impact that Perry wanted to make. The drama was released on July 11 on Prime Video and tells the story of a couple with a struggling marriage as they reckon with the idea of past misdeeds and divorce. Perry, who earned fame with the Madea movies, served as director, producer, and writer. Unfortunately, Divorce in the Black's reviews have been tremendously bleak.

Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.
The first of the month sees the premiere of four-episode British series Shardlake. This mystery drama takes place during the reign of Henry VIII and features none other than Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) investigating a murder. Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.
Movies are bit more interesting on Hulu in May. Teen comedy Prom Dates premieres on May 3. That will be followed by the 2023 Adam Drive film Ferrari on May 24. Before all that though is the real heavy hitter. You can watch Austin Butler’s acclaimed performance as The King in Elvis as early as May 1. O.J. Simpson's death hasn't changed anyone's mind about his perceived guilt despite being acquitted of murder. That is, except for a movie called The Juice. Filmmaker Joshua Newton struggled with casting for the film, initially targeting Owen Wilson for the lead role. Newton has overcome numerous hurdles in his filmmaking career, including technical and legal challenges in his previous work, Beautiful Blue Eyes.
Disgraced NFL athlete, actor, and celebrity O.J. Simpson passed away on April 11, and in the two weeks since then, people have hardly eulogized the man rhapsodically. Most people agree that Simpson seemed guilty of murdering his wife, Nicole Brown, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, despite being acquitted 30 years ago. Simpson has even morbidly teased his guilt, whether it's in footage where he pretends to stab someone to death or it's his book If I Did It, where the word 'if' is practically hidden in the title formatting.

The month is a prime time to have Disney+, what with the ongoing and buzzy success of “X-Men 97” and upcoming “Marvel Studios’ Assembled” going behind the scenes of the reboot series. May is of course the month of Star Wars, and the House of Mouse will celebrate with “Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” on May 4. Disney is also home to BBC America’s “Doctor Who,” which returns for a highly-anticipated 14th season with Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the Tardis as the new Doctor (he stepped into the role in December 2023 as part of the series’ beloved Christmas special tradition).

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

Tyler Perry has become a household name for many, best known for writing multiple hit movies, such as Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea’s Family Reunion, and Madea Goes to Jail. He also wrote and created many successful television series, including Ruthless, Sistas, and All the Queen’s Men. There’s no doubt that Perry’s creative mind is the driving force behind the multitude of his successful movies and shows. In addition to his obvious skills as a writer, he also has a wide range as an actor. Best known as a comedian for his portrayal of the titular character in his Madea movies, he can also switch hats and take on more dramatic roles as he did in Gone Girl, Vice, and the dark comedy, Don’t Look Up. The latest feature from David Fincher, a big-budget drama series from Steven Knight and Shawn Levy, and an Oscar hopeful starring Annette Bening and Jodie Foster are among the standout new additions hitting Netflix in November.
With The Killer, Fincher reteams with Seven writer Andrew Kevin Walker to adapt the graphic novel written by Alexis Nolent. The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival this year and debuts on Netflix on Nov. 10, stars Michael Fassbender as a shadowy unnamed assassin and features a cast that includes Arliss Howard, Charles Parnell, Gabriel Polanco, Kerry O’Malley, Emiliano Pernía, Sala Baker, Sophie Charlotte and Tilda Swinton.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s review of The Killer described the film as “a satisfyingly retro, location-hopping genre exercise with fisticuffs, gadgets (albeit ones bought from Amazon) and smooth-talking antagonists that all plays like a tongue-in-cheek spoof of James Bond movies.”

Madea quickly rose from a supporting character to a main character with her own franchise after her big screen debut in Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Madea's movies, like many of Tyler Perry's, center around real-life familial relationships and are known for their comedic elements. Tyler Perry's Madea movies have become an important fixture in popular culture, striking a nerve with audiences and tackling deeper issues. Madea is often the standout character, stealing the show with her bombastic personality and hard edge. Each Madea movie is unique, offering a careful dissection of themes such as class, infidelity, and family dynamics beneath its surface of simple comedy.
Tyler Perry's Madea movies have jumped from the stage to the screen and become an important fixture in modern popular culture. In the tradition of Jodi Foster, Emma Watson, and Drew Barrymore, there is another actress whose talent survived childhood stardom and remains viable and among the most popular in Hollywood during her adult years. Best known to the world as “Keke,” Lauren Keyana Palmer was born in Harvey, Illinois, in 1993. As a child, she studied theater before – at the young age of 9 – she was cast in her first feature film, the Ice Cube-produced hit film Barbershop 2: Back in Business, and she continues to be a popular actress and media personality today, twenty years later.
After Barbershop 2: Back in Business, the following year, in 2005, Palmer signed a record deal with Atlantic Records, and from there, she soared on screen, through music, and as a media favorite because of her no-nonsense and unapologetically confident personality which was a perfect fit for her most impressive film to date.

Eighteen years ago, Tyler Perry brought his DIY play to the big screen. Released in 2005, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” chronicles one beleaguered woman’s journey to healing and self-discovery after being betrayed by her philandering husband. The film features all the classical elements of Perry productions. It’s set in a predominantly Black area of the South, there are theatrical church scenes and plenty of the over-the-top histrionics extracted straight from his plays. But more importantly, there was Madea.
Played by Perry himself, the matriarch emerged as a rambunctious, pistol-packing matriarch who’s as comfortable espousing quirky wisdom as she is ferocious clapbacks. Upon its release, the flick got mixed reviews from critics — but it grossed $50.7 million at the box office, just about 10-times more than its budget. Since then, Perry’s released nine additional Madea films, with the eight that came out in theaters grossing $570 million at the box office,...

Bold, beautiful, and bittersweet, Tyler Perry's "A Jazzman's Blues" is a larger-than-life love story set during the Jim Crow era. It's an epic tale about love and loss with a strong musical component (hence the title); the core conflict is the star-crossed lovers, but the story is so grand, so encompassing, that it touches on various topics: Black culture, drug addiction, racism, identity, trauma ... the list goes on.
Tyler Perry wrote "A Jazzman's Blues" 27 years ago, and the project is obviously a very personal one. That passion shines throughout, scene by scene. The film is brimming with sentimentality, and there's an earnestness here that feels deeply sincere, if not always effective. This is an unusual project for the director, who is best known for comedies like "Madea's Family Reunion"; he has tackled more serious fare — such as "Precious," which he produced — but he's never really had what could be...

20th Century Studios has released the first trailer for Vacation Friends. The upcoming comedy is set to stream on Hulu in the U.S., as well as Star and Disney+ internationally, this summer. The cast is led by John Cena and Lil Rel Howery. The studio describes it as a "raw and raunchy comedy." Based on what we're seeing in the trailer, that appears to be the case.
The Vacation Friends trailer opens with what looks to be a lovely wedding, which is then crashed, quite literally, by a wild couple who clearly weren't invited to join in on the otherwise calm festivities. We come to find that these wedding crashers met the bride and groom somewhat recently on a vacation in Mexico, where they all cut loose with one another. Hence, they felt like it was perfectly fine to show up at the wedding uninvited. As one might imagine,...

“I have managed Miss Tyson’s career for over 40 years, and each year was a privilege and blessing,” her manager, Larry Thompson, said in a statement. “Cicely thought of her new memoir as a Christmas tree decorated with all the ornaments of her personal and professional life. Gone this award season, along with many other live events, is the annual Governors Awards, scuttled by the pandemic. Instead, the Academy Board of Governors has voted to present two Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Awards for the first time, not only to filmmaker Tyler Perry, but also to the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF). The Oscar statuettes will be presented at the two-month-delayed 93rd Oscars which airs live on ABC and to broadcast outlets worldwide on Sunday, April 25, 2021.
“There has been such widespread generosity in our industry that limiting the Hersholt Humanitarian Award to one recipient, this year in particular, was impossible. So, we are breaking with tradition and giving two awards to honor that spirit,” said Academy President David Rubin in an official statement. “Tyler’s cultural influence extends far beyond his work as a filmmaker. He has quietly and steadily focused on humanitarian and social justice causes from the beginning of his career,...

Tyler Perry and the Motion Picture and Television Fund have been selected by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Board of Governors to both receive Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Awards to be presented at the 93rd Annual Academy Awards on Sunday April 25.
Perry is being honored for his extensive work on humanitarian and social justice causes, while the MPTF will receive the first Hersholt ever awarded to an organization, an act the AMPAS board had to approve on this one time only basis as MPTF heads towards its 100th of “taking care of our own”.
In the past several years, since the 82nd Oscar year, the Hersholt, Thalberg Award, and Honorary Oscars have been presented at the Governors Awards, a separate ceremony, usually in November, designed to separate these special awards from the regular Oscar ceremony, but the Coronavirus pandemic has upset the normal way of things, including the...
