To understand "Left Behind," one must understand a version of Christianity not widely practiced by many people outside certain pockets of the United States. In some American Evangelical churches, they preach of the coming Rapture, when all of the Christians on Earth -- including the dead ones -- will be bodily scooped up by God and transported into Heaven. The idea of a Rapture is taken from an interpretation from the Book of Thessalonians which didn't enter into the Christian lexicon until about the 1830s, making it a very recent development. When Evangelical churches began to become popular in the United States in the 1950s, a stripe of fundamentalist theology began embracing the Rapture as a prophecy that was almost immediately nigh.

It's last call for several horror films, including "The Silence of the Lambs" and the "The Omen" trilogy, which are leaving Netflix in December.

Also going bye-bye: Both versions of manly tearjerker "Brian's Song" and classics including "All About Eve" (1950), "The Great Escape" (1963) and "The Hustler" (1961). And if you want to stream '80s favorites "The Dark Crystal" (1982) or "Labyrinth" (1986), better get on that before December 1.

The original Left Behind was not a quality film. This isn’t coming from me, as I haven’t seen it; I’m going by the word of Jerry B. Jenkins, one of the authors of the original sixteen “Left Behind” novels. According to Jenkins, he and his writing partner Tim Lahaye sold away their movie rights to the first available outlet, and ended up with three “church basement movies.” I’ve never seen a movie in a church basement, but I’m guessing they’re not of the highest quality. And that’s why Jenkins and Lahaye sued Cloud Ten Pictures Inc., on the grounds that Left Behind: The Movie, Left Behind II: Tribulation Force and Left Behind: World at War were bad movies. Apparently, that’s a thing you can do now. It’s also a thing you can win, because in 2008, Jenkins and Lahaye emerged the victors after almost a decade of legal squabbling...

Lea Thompson has signed on to star in the Left Behind remake for Films In Motion and director Vic Armstrong.

The actress is portraying the wife of Nicolas Cage's Ray Steele, who warns her family that the apocalypse is coming, but ends up pushing them farther away from her in the process. The story is set after the Rapture, where millions of people around the world suddenly disappear, leaving the rest of the Earth's population to deal with a planet embroiled in utter chaos and destruction. She joins a cast that also includes Chad Michael Murray, Cassi Thomson, Nicky Whelan, Quinton Aaron and Jordin Sparks.

Paul Lalonde and John Patus co-wrote the screenplay, based on the novel series by Tim Lahaye and Jerry B. Jenkins, which has sold more than 65 million copies in the United States. Production is currently under way in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Ashley Tisdale (Scary Movie 5) has signed on to star in the Family Screen Pictures adaptation Left Behind, joining a cast that includes Nicolas Cage and Chad Michael Murray.

The story revolves around a group of people trying to find their loved ones after the Rapture occurs, causing millions of people to vanish off the face of the Earth. Ashley Tisdale is portraying Chloe Steele, the daughter of Nicolas Cage's Ray Steele, who wanders throughout America in search of her family. Chad Michael Murray will play journalist Cameron "Buck" Mitchell, the role Kirk Cameron portrayed in the original Left Behind series.

Vic Armstrong is directing from a screenplay by Paul Lalonde (Left Behind) and John Patus (Left Behind: World at War), based on the novel series by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim Lahaye. No production schedule has been released.

One Tree Hill star Chad Michael Murray is in talks to star in the Left Behind remake alongside Nicolas Cage. We reported in October that Nicolas Cage will play journalist Cameron "Buck" Williams, although this new report indicates Chad Michael Murray will play the reporter. It isn't known what character Nicolas Cage is playing.

The story centers on a group trying to survive in the aftermath of the Rapture that has eliminated all Christians from Earth. Another day, another piece of Nicholas Cage casting news! This guy is signed on to star in so many film projects that I'm starting to think that he's got a Cage clone out there helping him out. He's currently in talks to star in a faith based action thriller called Left Behind. The movie is based on a series of books written by Tim Lahaye and Jerry B. Jenkins, dealing with the End Times. It features a Christian eschatological viewpoint of the end of the world.

Apparently, this will also be a reboot of a film series already made that starred Kirk Cameron. I've never seen the original films or read the books, but from the research I've done on it it sounds like it will make for an interesting film series. It's easy to see Cage take on a project like this.

In 2001 the Left Behind franchise made its way to the movies starring Kirk Cameron and now Nicolas Cage is in negotiations to topline a reboot of the Christian-themed movie trilogy.

Furthermore, the project has found its director in Vic Armstrong, best known for his stunt work on Hollywood films since the 1960s.

Based on the mega-successful books written by Tim Lahaye and Jerry Jenkins, Paul Lalonde will produce the action thriller with Michael Walker, and co-write the script with John Patus, who worked on the final entry 2005s Left Behind: World at War.

Christian beliefs are again at the center of the new movie, but the story will be in the mold of a classic disaster film since the plot takes place during the first few hours after the Rapture and focuses on survivors.

Filming is expected to start in Baton Rouge, Louisiana next spring and Samuel Goldwyn Films are planning a fourth-quarter 2013 release date.

The "Ghost Rider" star will have his faith tested as he's signed on to star in the reboot of "Left Behind," according to Heat Vision.

"Left Behind" is based on the mega-successful 16-book series written by Tim Lahaye and Jerry Jenkins that focuses on the Christian beliefs of the End Times and the Rapture in the context of contemporary political thrillers. Kirk Cameron starred in the original film trilogy consisting of "Left Behind: The Movie" (2000), "Left Behind II" Tribulation Force" (2002) and "Left Behind: World at War" (2005).

Cloud Ten Pictures' Left Behind: World at War premieres Thursday in Hollywood, but not at any of the usual venues such as Grauman's Chinese Theatre or the ArcLight. Instead, the direct-to-video feature about the years of tribulation following the Rapture, when true Christians are taken into heaven, will premiere at the Hollywood Presbyterian Church before playing weekend engagements in more than 3,200 churches nationwide.
