The Crime Behind The Curtain: Looking Back at ‘Yavanika,’ a Cinematic Masterpiece
Image
All the world’s a stage,

And all the men and women merely players;

They have their exits and their entrances.

The period between the 1970s and 80’s is widely considered as the golden age of Malayalam cinema, which saw a surge of new-age writers and directors that brought in fresh perspectives and styles. It was a time when the first generation of film institute graduates based in Kerala produced several movies that introduced a new visual language, receiving critical acclaim as well as acceptance from the Malayali audience. Hailed as one of the prominent film-makers of the Malayalam movie industry in the 1980’s and the 90’s along with directors like Padmarajan, Aravindan and Bharathan, K.G George experimented with the art of filmmaking like no other, defying stereotypes and pushing the limits set by conventional filmmaking practices that focused mostly on adaptations of novels, stories and plays.

His films explored...

40th Guadalajara Film Festival Opens With Mexico’s First Stop-Motion Animated Feature ‘I Am Frankelda’ as It Launches New Genre Sidebar
Image
The Guadalajara International Film Festival (Ficg) is proudly celebrating its 40th edition with a milestone: Mexico’s first-ever stop-motion animated feature, “I Am Frankelda” (“Soy Frankelda”), which opens the festival.

Running June 6-14, the country’s most prominent film festival launches a new genre section that features five pics led by Pablo Stoll’s zombie dramedy “Summer Hit” (“El tema del verano”) and Emilio Portes’ “Don’t Leave the Kids Alone.” This new by invitation only sidebar would be the 10th competitive section of the fest.

“It’s never been easy to put on a festival in Mexico – there are a lot of people who don’t really understand the work that goes into it. But what truly matters is that, for 40 years, through changing tides, shifting governments and opposition from both inside and out, we’ve kept the festival alive. And what we’ve come to realize is that...

In addition to being a faithful shepherd, David expressed his adoration for God through poems and music, both of which will be featured in the series.

The first three episodes of “House of David” are available now on Prime Video. Keep reading to discover who will bring the Biblical cast of characters to life on screen.

Tales From The Box Office: The Financial Failure Of Dredd Remains A Tragedy
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

When a movie is initially released, it feels like its financial performance is the biggest measuring stick to determine its success. But we have countless examples of films that failed in their day only to become stone-cold classics that had a rich life well beyond their opening weekend. Let us never forget that "The Thing" and "Blade Runner" both had to open against "E.T." but they were not lost to the sands of time. But sometimes, the sting of failure cuts deeper because absolutely everything seemed right, and yet, it doesn't click with moviegoers. Such was the case with 2012's "Dredd," a movie so good that its relative disappointment still hurts a full decade later.

In honor of the film's 10th anniversary,...

September usually means the beginning of the traditional fall TV season. As such, Hulu’s list of new releases for September 2021 contains some impressive TV swings.

For starters, all of ABC and Fox’s (both now united under the Disney banner alongside Hulu) fall season offerings will be made available to stream on Hulu the next day. More impressively, however, two FX on Hulu originals make their way to the streaming world this month.

The story of a virus that destroys every mammal with a Y-chromosome (save for one escape artist and his monkey) is set to premiere on September 13. Shortly after that, the B.J. Patton Oswalt in M.O.D.O.K. (2021)
Hulu New Releases: May 2021
Patton Oswalt in M.O.D.O.K. (2021)
Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.

The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. Sounds kinda fun! It’s no wonder that M.O.D.O.K. is the last Hulu Marvel show standing.

In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...

‘Vantage Point’ TV Series Based On Movie In Works At NBC From Barry Levy, Josh Berman & Neal H. Moritz
Image
Exclusive: NBC is developing Vantage Point, a character-driven thriller drama series based on the 2008 Sony movie. The TV adaptation comes from the film’s writer, Barry Levy, and producer, Neil H. Moriz via his Original Film, as well as Josh Berman’ Osprey Productions and Sony Pictures TV where Berman and Moritz have overall deals.

The film, which starred Dennis Quaid, Matthew Fox, Forest Whitaker, William Hurt and Sigourney Weaver, told the story of an assassination attempt on the President of the United States through the vantage points of different characters.

Here is how the TV series is described: In the age of fake news, the truth can seem inadequate at best and skewed at worst. By embracing a multitude of different perspectives – ranging from government operatives to civilian informants to innocent bystanders – viewers will find themselves in the unique position of deciding what actually happened.

Cara Delevingne
10 Best Non-Superhero Comic-Book Movies of the 2010s, From ‘Atomic Blonde’ to ‘Snowpiercer’ (Photos)
Cara Delevingne
Superhero movies, it has been (accurately) said, rule the box office. But although billions of dollars are made every year adapting comic books about costumed vigilantes, there is a whole universe of comic-book storytelling that frequently goes unexplored. Human dramas, light comedies, sci-fi and action comics alike, these works are frequently brought to the screen but sometimes overlooked by mainstream audiences who equate comics with the superhero genre. We were paying attention. These are the non-superhero comic book films that moved us and thrilled us this decade.

10. “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” (2017)

Audiences are bizarrely unkind to space operas that aren’t called “Star Wars,” which is a shame, because “Valerian” is one of the best in the genre. Based on the French comic book series “Valérian and Laureline,” which helped inspire “Star Wars” in the first place, “City of a Thousand Planets” begins with a phenomenal,...

Alex Garland in 28 jours plus tard (2002)
Real Dredd Director Finally Confirmed by Karl Urban
Alex Garland in 28 jours plus tard (2002)
It turns out Dredd was actually directed by Alex Garland and not Pete Travis, who was given the director's credit for his work. Or maybe lack of work, based on what Karl Urban has to say about it. Dredd was released in 2012 and, though it bombed at the box office, the movie has become a cult classic, and for good reason. The movie is a truly excellent example of action-packed sci-fi and, if Garland, the director behind Ex Machina and Annihilation, did indeed direct the movie, that would help explain it. Here's what Urban had to say about it in a recent interview.

"I would love to have the opportunity to play Dredd again, but if it doesn't happen then I'm happy with the fact that we've made a film that has become a cult classic and that people have discovered over time. A huge part of the success of...

Karl Urban at an event for Star Trek : Sans limites (2016)
Karl Urban Claims Alex Garland Actually Directed ‘Dredd,’ Not Pete Travis
Karl Urban at an event for Star Trek : Sans limites (2016)
Rumors have persisted for years that the making of “Dredd,” the 2012 science-fiction film starring Karl Urban, was plagued by confrontations between Lionsgate and director Pete Travis in the editing room. The studio apparently disliked the direction Travis was taking the movie so much that he was forced out of post-production. The rumor has never been confirmed until now.

Urban recently spoke with JoBlo about his hopes of continuing the franchise in a “Dredd” sequel, and he credited Alex Garland as one of the reasons the first movie has become such a cult classic. Garland was a writer and producer on “Dredd,” which came out years before Garland’s own directorial career flourished with “Ex Machina” and “Annihilation.” Reports always said that the studio had Garland come in and reshape the movie, and Urban’s comments seem to verify those accounts.

Pete Travis interview: City Of Tiny Lights, politics, Dredd
Simon Brew Apr 9, 2017

Director Pete Travis chats to us about City Of Tiny Lights, television, politics and Dred..

City Of Tiny Lights, starring Riz Ahmed and Billie Piper, is the latest film from director Pete Travis, known particularly in this parish for helming Dredd. We met up with him in London to chat about the movie, about politics, and about Dredd…

I read an interview for City Of Tiny Lights where you were quoted as saying you wouldn’t make the film unless Riz Ahmed did it, and that he was the first choice for the lead role of Tommy. I can’t tell you the number of people I interview who say something like that and…

… mostly they’re lying when they say that!

Well, quite possibly!

There’s a rule about casting I learned a long time ago. The right person for the role is the person who...

Riz Ahmed Digs Up Secrets in First Trailer for ‘City of Tiny Lights’
After a major last year with The Night Of, Rogue One, and Jason Bourne this year, Riz Ahmed also brought a few films to Tiff. One of them was City of Tiny Lights, which comes from Dredd‘s Pete Travis, and follows Ahmed as a London detective who gets entangled in a missing-girl case as a complex web of lies bubble up. With the film picked up for U.K. distribution this April, the first neon-soaked trailer has now arrived.

We said in our review, “Ahmed shines in the lead role: something this charismatic actor has deserved since the wonderfully funny Four Lions. He embodies the hard-edged street-wise detective well without erasing the sense of empathy his characters always possess. We see the struggle endured between those worlds and know how Shelley’s leaving widened the void in his soul that Stuart’s death tore open. People like him from Mrs.

The Walking Dead: Lauren Cohan interview on Maggie Greene
Duncan Bowles Sep 27, 2016

As The Walking Dead season 6 comes out on Blu-ray and DVD, we chatted to Lauren Cohan about Maggie, survival and losing people...

Warning: contains spoilers for The Walking Dead season 6.

Through some choice genre roles in the likes of Supernatural, Chuck, The Vampire Diaries and Archer, Lauren Cohan has cemented herself as a geek icon, but it’s her long-standing role as Maggie Greene on The Walking Dead that’s allowed her to really shine. Maggie’s journey has seen her suffer extreme loss, with her once rather large family cut down to err… zero, but she’s also been the only character to sustain a long term relationship with Mr Glenn Rhee and out of that love, there’s now the possibility of the show's second baby on the way.

Of course like most of the core characters, both Glenn and Maggie are in the line of bat,...

With every powerful world leader set to attend, the funeral should be the most protected event on Earth. Yet within moments of arriving, heads of government are assassinated and London landmarks are attacked. Asher, Banning, and Jacobs are ambushed and retreat amidst a hail of gunfire and explosives. The devastated British capital goes into lockdown. Banning will stop at nothing to secure Asher’s safe return home. In case you didn't get a chance to see this action sequel in theaters, we have an exclusive preview for you to check out before the movie hits Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand formats. This preview takes fans behind-the-scenes of the destructive Chelsea Bridge scene in this sequel.

This preview, courtesy of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, features second unit director Steve Griffin, who teases that, since they couldn't actually blow up the real Chelsea Bridge in London, this massive attack scene was filmed by using a huge green screen set at an airfield in Bulgaria during principal photography. We also hear from senior visual effects supervisor Sean Farrow, who reveals that some of the most fascinating conversations during the production involved around deciding which bridges to blow up. He also explains that the production chose Chelsea Bridge because it was a suspension bridge that could be pulled apart piece by piece.
