Stealing a Ranch

Louise Lester shows up at the ranch and claims to be a relative and legal guardian of Pauline Bush and Jessalyn van Trump. She tries to take possession of the property, but J. Walter Kerrigan knows her for the fake she is. Can he thwart her evil plan?

This early western, directed by Alan Dwan and available for viewing on the Eye Institute site on Youtube, is typical for the unit. Dwan had shown up while the director was drunk and had been instructed to direct, so he did. His works in this period are primitive in terms of story-telling technique, but he quickly learned to tell the story though images. In this one, the landscape is lovely and sustains the movie for the one reel it takes up.

Dwan would quickly learn his job and go on to direct movies for the next half century. He was expert at solving technical problems and at getting his actors' enthusiastic performances, to lend an unequaled pleasure to his movies.
