- Maya Talwar: You are an unhappy man and will always be...
- Dev Saran: And you are beautiful woman and will always be.
- Maya Talwar: Day after tomorrow are our wedding anniversaries, so I thought we should do something special for our spouses.
- Dev Saran: Let us leave them, that will be quite special.
- Maya Talwar: Do you have a problem?
- Dev Saran: Not directly, but indirectly I do... My mother has a problem. The faster you go inside, the faster my mother can leave from here
- [sits beside her]
- Maya Talwar: [surprised at his audacity for sitting next to her] You are a strange man. You sat down?
- Dev Saran: Then should I lie down and chat? One-to-one discussions always happens while sitting down
- Maya Talwar: Discussion?
- Dev Saran: Yes, I love discussions and I know you have a problem. So, talk to me. Tell me your problem
- Maya Talwar: Why should I discuss my problem with you?
- Dev Saran: So, you admit there is a problem. Perhaps I could help you
- Dev Saran: The guy waiting for you inside, is he your friend or your love?
- Maya Talwar: [pondering over his question] Hmm.
- Dev Saran: You shouldn't take this long
- Maya Talwar: [smiles] I have known Rishi since childhood... After my parents died, Rishi and his father became my family.
- Dev Saran: That's sweet but that's not the answer to my question... Do you love him?
- Maya Talwar: I do... But not the way I thought I would love him.
- Dev Saran: Then like how? Like the kind of love found in good books and bad films?
- Maya Talwar: No, the way that love ought to be... That kind of love.
- Rishi Talwar: Dad, what did you have for breakfast?
- Samarjit Singh Talwar aka Sam: I don't know... I don't remember her name.
- Dev Saran: What are your intentions?
- Samarjit Singh Talwar aka Sam: My intentions are honorable, but I do not want a dowry. I am anti-dowry.
- Maya Talwar: Excuse me... excuse me
- Dev Saran: [Dev confused wondering where the voice is coming, first looks at the sky and then surprised to see a bride sitting alone on the bench] Huh?
- Maya Talwar: Please don't mess the garden. I have just cleaned it up...
- Dev Saran: [intrigued] Are you the gardener?
- Maya Talwar: What do you think?
- Dev Saran: I think you have stolen the bride's clothes... Should I go inform inside?
- Maya Talwar: [visibly annoyed] Could you just please leave me alone?
- Dev Saran: Of course... Not... It's your wedding and you are sitting outside here?
- [sits next to her]
- Maya Talwar: What did you think before marrying?
- Dev Saran: Who thinks before marrying!
- [laughing]
- Dev Saran: Just kidding. Rhea and me, are friends from college, so we thought we'd give our friendship a new meaning. Besides what can be better than spending your entire life with your friend?
- Maya Talwar: But, at times friendship replaces love and then there's no room left for love
- Dev Saran: [thinking of way to ease her doubts] Listen to this quote- The sagas of everlasting romances have gone past long ago, just learn to make do with tiny love stories
- Maya Talwar: Does that mean you don't love your wife?
- Dev Saran: [ponders over her question] hmm
- Maya Talwar: You shouldn't take this long
- Dev Saran: [laughs] We are happy. We have made our little world together
- Maya Talwar: That's not the answer to my question
- Dev Saran: I have lost the right to apologize to you, but I don't want to lose the right to bless you.
- Dev Saran: One should listen to strangers... sometimes, they know us better than those we call our own.
- Samarjit Singh Talwar aka Sam: Time means now... if you want to love, love now... if you need to apologize, do it now... if you want to hold a hand, hold it now.
- Dev Saran: It's true that I'm a failure... but do you know what's an even greater failure in this house than me? Our relationship... our marriage.
- Dev Saran: We were crazy. We were strange. Different. Unlike the rest. Incomplete on our own, But whole-completely whole-together. We weren't walking the ground anymore... We had already slipped. We were soaring, Talking to the clouds, We didn't care what the world thought. Because we had built one of our own. Our world. Maya and Dev's world. A world made of dreams. A world of dreams...
- Samarjit Singh Talwar aka Sam: Love and death... both are uninvited guests. No one has control over them.
- Maya Talwar: Four years ago... you told me love was outdated. Do you still believe that, Dev? Four years ago, you told me- "If you don't go looking for love, you won't find it." So tell me... What will you say now? Answer me...
- [steps closer to Dev. Her voice rises, shaking but resolute.]
- Maya Talwar: Why are we both here... Alone... in the middle of the night... At a train station, Dev? What are we doing here? I need answers... Tell me! Where are you going, Dev? I want the answer, Dev... Tell me... tell me... Answer me, Dev... I want to know... Tell me...
- Dev Saran: 18th March, 2002... That's the day I met you for the first time, Maya. I remember the exact time, Maya And from that day on... I've felt like I've known you for centuries. Does that answer your question?
- [He looks away for a second. Then back at her-raw, open]
- Dev Saran: Maybe not. Maybe this... Every day, your train leaves the station at 4:32 PM. Mine at 4:21. And every single day... I miss my train- Just so I can spend a few extra moments with you. Does that answer your question?
- Maya Talwar: [softly] Dev...
- Dev Saran: Every day, I drop you at this station... But your memories don't leave me. Isn't that the answer you were looking for? And yes, Maya, I'm a married man. And maybe you're forgetting... you are married as well. We're both married. So what are we doing here- Alone, In the middle of the night, At this station?
- [He finally smiles-a sad, broken one.]
- Dev Saran: Oh... bingo. I think I have the answer.
- [He takes a breath, and says the one truth they've both been hiding from.]
- Dev Saran: Listen to the answer before you walk away... I love you, Maya. And you love me too.
- Dev Saran: Now?
- Maya Talwar: Now what, Dev?
- Dev Saran: Just felt it was important to say... that we're in love. So we said it.
- Maya Talwar: And by saying it... what did we even get?
- Dev Saran: I don't know. But if we hadn't said it, I think we would've lost something for sure.
- Maya Talwar: [a tear rolls down, she wipes it gently] You know, Dev... This relationship has no future.
- Dev Saran: Yes, I know. That's why maybe... We should leave it right here. At this beautiful turn.
- Dev Saran: [They look at each other-quiet, heavy, hearts exposed but restrained.] One last cup of coffee?
- Maya Talwar: No.
- Train Station Announcer: [a voice echoes through the station.] The last train to Connecticut departs at 12:05 PM.
- Maya Talwar: Your train...
- Dev Saran: [shakes his head slowly] Not mine anymore. I'm thinking maybe I'll stop taking trains altogether. Buy myself a new car. A nice new blue car.
- Dev Saran: [looks at Maya] You like blue?
- Maya Talwar: [teary-eyed, silent-just looks at him]
- Dev Saran: I like blue.
- Rhea Saran: I fell in love with the old Dev... But he's lost now.
- Dev Saran: And if he's lost... It's you who lost him.
- Maya Talwar: What's the matter, Rishi? No passion, no drama. I'm not a good wife... I can't be a mother. If I have so many flaws-then why don't you just leave me?
- Rishi Talwar: We both have flaws, Maya. The only difference is- You're always talking about breaking this relationship... And I'm always trying to fix it.
- Dev Saran: They say the foundation of a marriage should be nothing but endless love- and nothing else. Because if the foundation is weak, relationships break. Just like ours did. Years later, we found happiness. We even found the destination of love. But often, this thought crosses my mind- If only the road to that destination hadn't passed through broken hearts.
- Dev Saran: We knew our journey was only meant to go this far. These were the last few breaths of our love. It was time to go home. Time to tell Rhea and Rishi the truth. Because... because happiness can't exist in the shadow of a lie. And who would know that better than us? Who would know... better than us?
- Dev Saran: [already kneeling] People share happiness and sorrow... But I want to share my punishment with you. Maybe life won't be complete if we're together- But it will still be life. Will you live this incomplete life with me, Maya?
- Maya Talwar: [begins crying, overwhelmed, silent]
- Dev Saran: [impatiently, holding back his own pain] Come on, Maya... it hurts. Hurry up, I can't sit here all day. What do you want me to do-go down on my knees?
- [gestures with his arms stretched out]
- Maya Talwar: [lets out a tearful laugh through her sobs] Shut up! Just shut up. Talk properly... politely.
- Dev Saran: [taking a breath, trying again with awkward charm] Okay... Hello. Thank you. Nice to meet you. I... I love you, dammit!
- Maya Talwar: [smiles through her tears, then slowly kneels down beside him] I love you too.
- Maya Talwar: [walking toward Dev, both drenched in the rain] My marriage is falling apart, Dev. And as far as I can see... so is yours. I can't save mine alone. I need a friend- Someone who can understand me, Help me make sense of what I'm going through, See my truth for what it is. And who could do that better than you? That's why I'm offering you my hand in friendship... Will you take it?
- Dev Saran: [softly, through the rain] I'm in pain, Maya... I just want to sit for a bit.
- Dev Saran: [Voice Over] And just like that... Two strangers, in an attempt to save their broken marriages, Gave birth to a new relationship. But what we didn't see, That day in the rain... Was the storm that was yet to come.
- Kamaljit 'Kamal' Saran: [to Dev and Maya] Samarjit and I... we're both alone. We lost our love a long time ago. And when two people go through the same kind of pain, They understand each other better. They come closer. The things they can't say to anyone else... They find the courage to say to each other.
- Samarjit Singh Talwar aka Sam: [nodding, with a half-smile] Precisely. Two strangers... same situation. Then comes friendship. And after that-problem solved. Simple.
- Maya Talwar: [seated on a hospital bed] You... I know you.
- Dev Saran: [seated on a bed besides her] I remember. We've met before.
- Maya Talwar: [clutching her ankle, wincing in pain] Ouch... oh God. Thanks to you, I won't be able to walk for a week.
- Dev Saran: [mock serious] Ouch? Because of you, I might not walk straight ever again.
- Maya Talwar: [confused] What?
- Dev Saran: [serious, with a soft smile] If I hadn't met you... My life would've taken a different turn. And so would my pain.
- Maya Talwar: And if I hadn't met you... I probably wouldn't have gotten married.
- Dev Saran: [raises an eyebrow] Wouldn't have gotten married? Is that a good thing... or a bad thing?
- Maya Talwar: Good.
- Dev Saran: Good?
- Maya Talwar: Bad.
- Dev Saran: Bad?
- Maya Talwar: [exasperated] I mean... I don't know!
- Dev Saran: [mirroring her] I don't know!
- Dev Saran: [leaning in, softly] Are you happy...? You're taking too long to answer.
- Maya Talwar: [defensive] Who are you to ask me that?
- Dev Saran: Question after question... No answers.
- Maya Talwar: Why should I listen to your questions? Why should I answer you? Who are you?
- Dev Saran: [pause, then seriously] Who am I? I'm the father of the child you were just trying to take away. Why? Don't you have children of your own?
- [Maya looks down]
- Dev Saran: Aww.. you don't have any...
- Maya Talwar: [softly] No. And I never will. I teach children. I'm a mother to all of them.
- Dev Saran: [playfully] Mother India!
- Dev Saran: [then gently, with a shift in tone] Teaching many kids... Taking random children by the hand... Does that fill your emptiness? Because you're empty, aren't you? That incompleteness... I can see it in your eyes.
- [He looks at her-softly, knowingly]
- Dev Saran: Like I see it in mine.
- Rishi Talwar: [holding a wedding bouquet] The girl who gets these flowers gets a new life, new happiness... and I hope that girl is you, Maya.
- [Maya gets teary-eyed]
- Rishi Talwar: For years, your heart has been searching for its destination... and that destination is Dev.
- Rhea Saran: [to Maya] If you don't leave now... your destination will only move further away.
- [Maya looks at her, stunned]
- Rhea Saran: Dev's going to Toronto. His train leaves in fifteen minutes.
- [Maya becomes alert, breath catching]
- Rishi Talwar: [offering Maya the bouquet] Go, Maya. Go get your love-before it's too late. Go.
- Maya Talwar: [Breaks down and hugs Rishi] Thank you...
- [tearfully and softly]
- Maya Talwar: [Rishi nods and smiles]
- [Maya turns to Rhea-silent, unable to speak. Rhea nods and smiles gently]
- Maya Talwar: [Maya smiles back, through her tears]
- Maya Talwar: [holding Dev by the shoulders tearfully, her voice trembling] Dev... only I know how I survived these three years. Not a single day, not a single moment passed without thinking of you. But I kept telling myself... that you were okay. Happy. With your family.
- [Dev looks down-unable to meet her eyes]
- Maya Talwar: Thinking about your happiness... made my pain feel a little less.
- [Gently holds his face. Dev doesn't look up.]
- Maya Talwar: But today I found out...
- [softly]
- Maya Talwar: you've been just as alone as I have.
- [Dev looks at her, stunned]
- Maya Talwar: Yes, Dev.
- [nodding, voice breaking]
- Maya Talwar: I've been completely alone too. For the past three years... just like you.
- [Dev still stunned]
- Maya Talwar: [falling apart] Why, Dev? Why did all this happen? Why did all this happen? Why did we meet? Why did we separate? Why, Dev... why? Why?
- Maya Talwar: [pretending to be startled, quickly composing herself] Dev!
- Dev Saran: Maya...
- Maya Talwar: I-sorry, I must've called you by mistake.
- Dev Saran: [softly] Are you okay?
- Maya Talwar: [pauses for a moment, then quietly lies] Hmm...
- Dev Saran: [tentatively] Did you tell Rishi...? Rishi, I mean...
- Maya Talwar: [quietly] Yeah... I told Rishi everything.
- Dev Saran: What did he say?
- Maya Talwar: He was really angry at first. But I know... with time, he'll forgive me.
- Dev Saran: [softly] He's a... he's a good man.
- Maya Talwar: [holding back tears] And Rhea?
- Dev Saran: [after a pause] She will too. With time. After all... family is family.
- Maya Talwar: [softly echoing] Yeah... family is family.
- Dev Saran: [a long silence. Both hold back tears. Neither speaks]
- [suddenly, pretending]
- Dev Saran: Yeah, Rhea-I'm coming...
- Maya Talwar: [also pretending] Yeah... I'm home too. Rishi's here as well.
- Dev Saran: [softly] Be happy, Maya.
- [Maya hangs up, unable to say a word]
- Rhea Saran: [calling out] Maya.
- [Maya stops, turns around slowly, unable to meet her eyes]
- Rhea Saran: What is it, Maya? Can't look me in the eye? Can't talk to me? Thinking you broke my heart... my home?
- [Maya shakes her head slightly-regretful]
- Rhea Saran: What would you even break, Maya? It was already broken. Yes, maybe you shouldn't have come between Dev and me... But what could you do? Dev's love is... something else. Ask me-I know.
- Maya Talwar: [looks down, ashamed] Don't be so generous, Rhea... That I feel even smaller.
- Rhea Saran: [firmly] I'm not that big-hearted. When Dev told me about you, I left him.
- [nods faintly]
- Rhea Saran: But maybe you didn't know that.
- [Maya looks up, shocked, a tear slips down her cheek]
- Rhea Saran: [after a pause] Strange, isn't it? One love changed the fate of two homes. And today, that same love stands... unlucky. I moved on. Rishi moved on. The only ones left behind... are the two of you.
- Maya Talwar: [quietly, accepting] Maybe this is our punishment.
- Rhea Saran: [with a bittersweet smile] Such a small punishment? Try living with Dev- Then you'll know what real punishment feels like.
